    Katsu Don
    Carlos T.

I found out the owner operator of the storefront BonJapan has returned with a food cart (a cart. not a truck) at 3pm on Facebook. I found out about the Statesman Journal article. By 4:15, I was chowing down on Katsu Don, sipping miso soup on a 98 degree day, and nibbling on edamame. BonJapan holds a special place in my heart because of the classic and completely recognizable Japanese cuisine he brings. Miso: I like to taste the dashi in mine, so his was PERFECT. Katsu Don: classic and definitely doesn't have a comparison to other cuisine. It's a rice bowl with pork tonkatsu on top. Then flavored with a sweet soy and an egg/onion. If you know katsu don, then you'll want to try his and see what you think. I loved it. I'll come back for the curry maybe tomorrow.

Katsu don breaded pork with eggs. Traditional Japanese food.

On our way back from camping in bend, we were looking for authentic Japanese food. There it was in salem Oregon. Its Japanese dish was so good. I recommend udon for Japanese natives but katsudon for sure be the best for everyone. Katsu curry is also good. I would like to stop by again.

It was a small little restaurant with only five tables and the bar, but we were seated quickly. The food was pretty average, but the real issue was waiting for the order. We were seated at 7:19pm and last call was 8:30pm so we thought we had plenty of time. Boy were we wrong. Our first order came pretty quickly at 7:30pm. We finished pretty quickly because we were so hungry. We ordered immediately. The next order didn't come out until 8:07pm. A whole half hour. At that point we were still hungry so we ordered immediately after we finished because it was last call, but we were disappointed. We saw other people who place their order after us get their food before us. It's like they purposely try to stall until last call for people who do the AYCE. Their food also wasn't the best quality for their price. Unfortunately as excited as we were before coming in, we won't be back.

Five Stars -- A Must‑Try in Downtown Salem!…read more My wife and I stopped by Akai Ramen yesterday, and this spot absolutely delivered. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, hot gemai tea, cucumbers, fresh salad, and the seafood ramen -- every single dish came out flavorful, balanced, and clearly made with care. The portions were generous, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable for the quality. The service was immaculate from start to finish. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming -- the kind of hospitality that makes you want to come back before you've even left. The decor is clean and modern with plenty of seating, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for a date, a family meal, or a quick bite. Yes, you do have to pay for parking in downtown Salem, but once you're inside, the food, the vibe, and the service make it more than worth it. If you're anywhere near Salem, I highly recommend stopping by. Akai Ramen is doing everything right -- great food, great people, great experience. Five stars all day.

To be honest, this place probably deserves closer to three stars, but I didn't quite have the heart…read moreto rate it that low. I know firsthand how challenging it can be for small business owners--especially immigrant-owned businesses. That said, there were several shortcomings that affected our experience. The issues started when ordering. There were two vegetarians in our group, and while many of the ramen dishes listed an option to add vegetables, I wanted to confirm whether the broth itself was vegetarian. Unfortunately, our server repeatedly said she didn't know and didn't offer to check with the kitchen. One ramen listed a miso broth, which is typically vegetarian, but when I asked about that specifically, I received the same response. To be safe, we ordered the clearly labeled vegetarian ramen, while my husband ordered the miso ramen. His dish arrived almost immediately, while the rest of us waited at least 15 minutes longer. When his ramen was delivered, there was no explanation or indication that ours was coming shortly. He tried to eat slowly so we could eat together, but he was nearly finished by the time our bowls arrived. One other small but noticeable issue: it was around Christmas, and the holiday music playlist was extremely limited. We heard the same songs rotate four times, which became a bit distracting. My advice would be to invest more in server training, especially around menu knowledge, and perhaps update the music playlist. With some improvements in service and attention to detail, this place could be much better.

I asked the man at the counter to suggest some vegan items. I went with a couple sushi rolls. The avocado roll is a no brainer, I like it, but not a favorite. She had a couple of the tempura veggie rolls I offered, and that was her favorite! Order at the counter, then they bring your order out to you. We decided on a table that had a padded bench and a padded chair. Most chairs are hard wood. After our sushi came out, I had to ask for soy sauce, wasabi and ginger. Last time, my husband asked for no teriyaki sauce and well done. When he got home after picking up the order, all plates had sauce and were not well done. This time, my husband said for me to call in and order the call. I did, when I show up, mysteriously our order was lost. They tired to blame that I called a different location so I asked to see their caller id and my phone number was there. The girl that was helping me trying to blame her coworker that was in the restroom. When I played the recording she just looked at me and said it wasn't her fault. i aksed them to make the food as we were starving and my sons food that I also had to pick up elsewhere was waiting in the car getting cold. It took them 30 mins for my food and they refused to fix their mistake and give us the food for free. The manager was also the cook and said that things happen and mistakes happen but they don't compensate for their mistakes. I told him that this never happens any where else. Our order is never correct lately. It was infuriating when they tried to say I called and places elsewhere. Anyways, the worst. "People make mistakes..." what kind of people do you have working there that constantly make mistakes!!!!

We reserved on Tock, and it was mostly full on a Friday night. Drinks: lots of local beers are available, but I went with the Pineapple Express: she warned it was spicy, and it indeed was (in a really good way). All of the food is done family style: - Clams Galicia: with tomato, chorizo, bacon broth. This broth as amazing. I literally drank it with a spoon - Pan con tomate: slightly different from classic preparation - more flavorful and heavier on the toppings - Salmorejo: tomato and bread puree, Serrano, jammy egg - like a creamy gazpacho - Grilled asparagus: with whipped ricotta and a cured egg yolk - Squid ink pasta: with hazelnuts, caramelized onions, peppers, and a runny egg yolk, a bit spicy. This dish was my favorite - Honey brined pork chop with a basque piperade sauce The servers were all great about checking in. I would definitely recommend the squid ink pasta and the clams if you're in town!
