Wow! I've been in the Columbia area for almost 18 years and all I can say is wish I had found you when you first opened. I find myself eating here at least twice a week, trying different sandwiches each time. I haven't been able to find a favorite yet. Every single meal, AWESOME! Today I had an old friend that I worked with for years before he retired. I told him how I love their food. Great place to grab a quick lunch. Food here is delicious and the menu is diverse. Plenty of options. All sides, salads and sauces (summer pasta, original pasta, potato salad, chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad, pimento cheese, slaw, horseradish mayo, garlic cayenne mayo, pesto mayo, etc) are made fresh daily. I was really looking forward to trying 5th Avenue Deli, but my experience was disappointing. The BLT was seriously lacking mayo, and the bacon was so thin it seemed microwaved rather than cooked fresh. On top of that, the broccoli cheese soup had no seasoning at all--just bland. What a yummy lunch spot! It's located right next to barre3 on Rosewood. I've been wanting to try this place for a while because of its extensive menu, and it did not disappoint! We ordered at the counter and the food was brought to our table in a timely manner. There is something here for everyone. Tons of choices and the opportunity to make your own creation! I could come back here everyday for a month and try something different each time. I finally settled on the 5th avenue sandwich with roast beef, peppers, and garlic mayo on ciabatta bread. So delicious! The garlic mayo was such a nice touch. My mom got the pesto turkey sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely be back to taste more menu selections! read more

They have a great selection of all different kinds of sandwiches anything you could think of is here. I just think it's a bit expensive. $7.95 for a Turkey Pesto and that's just the sandwich chips and a drink are extra. I wouldn't mind it if it was a large sandwich, but it's an average size sandwich. In a city full of really good deli options, 5th Ave might just be the cream of the crop. I have been blown away with every sandwich I have tried, from the Maple Street to the Kilbourne, to the Kyle, the 5th Ave, and beyond. I always find myself walking out the door discussing a long list of sandwiches that I can't wait to try when I come back. If I could eat lunch 10 times a day, I'd eat at 5th Ave all 10 times. The Kilbourne is quite possibly my favorite sandwich of any kind, anywhere in the world. The quality of meats are top notch, and the service is always quick and friendly. Perhaps the most telling aspect of how great this place is are the sides. Most places treat their sides such as a fruit cup/fruit salad as an afterthought. Even if they charge extra for a side of fruit, most places will only give you a few pieces of melon, maybe some pineapple, and if you're lucky enough a strawberry or grape or two. Not 5th Ave. The fruit salad side here is the epitome of what makes this place so great. A generous portion and high quality fruit that you actually want to eat! Lately it has been full of watermelon and strawberries and cantaloupe and all the delicious things you could ask for. Great neighborhood deli with a very wide-ranging menu. The vegetarian options are a little limited (and pretty typical of deli veggie offerings), but the menu is otherwise expansive with a ton of variety. The sides can be a little confusing: after many visits, I'm starting to get the hang of them. Some offerings are seasonal, and (in my opinion, your mileage may vary) some are far better than others. Note that fruit salad is summer-only (but that's because it's fresh fruit!). When you go in, you'll join a line to the counter. If it's your first visit, you'll probably want some time to study the menu-- so you might want to step to the side. If it's busy, it's a little hectic at the counter, but there's plenty of seating once you're ready to wait for your food. This deli is appropriate for all ages and all types of groups. read more

Was brought here for lunch by a colleague last week when visiting their site. The place is not your subway or jimmy johns so don't expect high end countertops and glaring food posters. You have to wait for your sandwich. Be patient and quit whining. I had The Kyle. The sandwich had the right seasoning and the bread was so yummy. I ate half of my sandwich and took a couple of minutes to convince myself to just wolf down the other half instead of saving it for later. After I finished both halves, I felt so sad because my sandwich is gone. I am still telling myself not to drive an hour for another Kyle. read more

I'm new to the neighborhood and walked in for lunch. It's a cute little deli, no frills, really, but plenty of menu options and they're fresh made. I ordered a turkey reuben (my personal favorite) with a side of fruit...strike that...pasta salad, they stopped doing fruit salad after labor day as I was told when I ordered it. :-\ Orders take a few minutes, but I didn't mind and took a seat at one of the bistro tables near the window with my book to read and a letter to write. My sandwich came out and was fairly stuffed with turkey and sauerkraut on marbled rye, pickle and pasta salad on the side. The salad was nothing fancy, just rotini, feta, tomatoes and cucumber with a little dressing. In retrospect I would have preferred a bag of chips, but there's always next time. They're close enough that I'll be back for lunch fairly often. The staff/owners are genial, one even ran downstairs to the Tap Room, which her husband runs, to get a copy of their menu for me as the deli was closing at 3. Further investigation may upgrade them to 4 stars. Just disappointed about the salad situation. I do have to wonder who tagged them with three dollar signs, though, a sandwich, chips and a drink are definitely under $10 here. Don't worry about sticker shock! read more

Easily the most overrated lunch spot in Columbia. What do people see in this place? You wait forever for your food, it's always mediocre, and it's never worth the price. Their German potato salad was served cold and looked like baby food. Both my father and I ordered pastrami sandwiches and were both amazed how little meat actually makes it on the bread. To top it off, my father's already "meh" sandwich had a special surprise; a long blond hair no doubt from the woman in plansight preparing all the food with no hat or hairnet. I chose the "Holbrook" today for lunch. The mayo, mustard and cheese provided the flavor, but there was very little meat on the sandwich. My friend had "Brenda's Cuban" and to be fair it appeared to have larger meat portions. The German Potato salad was very good. The restaurant was very clean and the staff was friendly and attentive. I stopped by today after my early morning Barre3 class hoping to pick up some breakfast. I was surprised when I was told that the only breakfast type foods they have are plain bagels, muffins and coffee. Tried this place as it was recommended by a couple of people. Wow, what a selection! Chicken, Ham, Roast Beef, Pastrami, Turkey, Tuna & Vegetarian options - about 5-6 varieties of each category, plus some combinations. If you can't find what you want out of that - you can "make your own". I settled on the Devine St & German Potato Salad to go, since I was on my way home. Since moving here, I've found a lot of ho hum & "just another chain" type of places for lunch. One or two nice, but nothing special places that were overwhelmed by customers with slow service. Granted I visited on a Saturday, before lunch gets going, but I have to say this place did not disapoint. I've waited longer at fast food joints! I don't remember the name of it, but it has cold slaw and Pastrami and it reminds you of a reuben only I think it's better. Food is great, service is ridiculously slow. You will be waiting at least 10 minutes for them to prepare your food, regardless of how many people are there or how busy they appear to be. I've also called ahead before and had to wait an extra 10 minutes for them to make me food, even though I called ahead 20 minutes before I got there.
