Took my children to lunch here today & I was very excited! I had only heard good things about this establishment and knew it had a long history. It's been around 80 years and today, I was eager to find out why. The whole diner scene is very clean and consistent with how I would imagine it has always looked. The walls are covered in framed historical documents and photographs about the Mathias Sandwich Shop and old signs from the 1940's and 1950's that I imagine are truly original to the era it was hoppin' and bussin' at during that time. It has a very unique feel to it, like a place your grandmother and her family loved to go to growing up in this area. You can tell some of their customers here are patrons. It's a true "mom and pop" kinda place, which I love! Although we ordered a kids burger and a couple Reuben sandwiches, I felt the need to come back and try everything on their menu. It was a simple sandwich, burger, hot dog, salad kind of diner, but each category had many choices to choose from. The food was served warm and with a smile, which is always a nice touch. My son ate all of his kid's burger and fries and my other son ate all of his Reuben and chips. Both of them were very satisfied! My Reuben was also very good. The flavors were true to their mark and very good. The service we received was also great! Parking can be tricky in the front of the shop, so I might try parking behind the shop next time. So, if you're looking for a good well run deli to get some freshly cooked to order sandwiches or burgers or hot dogs for a good price, this is your place! read more

All four of us enjoyed our sandwiches, which were a Reuben, Cuban, Chicken Salad, and ham and cheese. A couple of us had their chips and the other two of us had their fries. I thought the fries were better than the chips but there is an up charge for that. The service was very good and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. read more

Mathias is a hidden gem. It's a small sandwich shop that serves burgers, salads and even desserts. Parking can be tight but it's worth it. The mirror windows can be deceiving from the outside. I always thought this place was a bar. However, once inside I discovered a local diner. The employees were really nice and recommended the pimento cheese burger, which was amazing. They also advertise a buffet. Although, I didn't see the buffet I'm excited to go back when they have it. I would recommend Mathias and plan on going back again. read more

Great local establishment. Restaurant has been in the community for years and is a nice place to get cheap food food. There is a buffet at breakfast and lunch depending on the day. They also cater. I've come here for years to get both and never had anything I didn't enjoy. They also have some of the better sweet tea in the area. read more

Hands down one of the best pimento cheese burgers around. Onion rings are also fantastic. This little place is easy to drive by, but is honestly one of very few local, diner style restaurants left in town. Even their simple breakfast items like French toast and omelets are great. It's always such a pleasant surprise eating here, like you get to experience it for the first time with each visit. They offer a buffet as well on certain days, which vary with great breakfast/lunch options. While you don't really have a waitress, the staff is always at the counter to offer refills. The only real gripe about this fantastic business is the parking situation (which I'm sure they have heard a thousand times.) Best times to go are the off hours of the day, and week days. They were an hour late on my food because they gave the fruit tray to someone else...I asked what can they do to prorate the cost because I have been there over an hour waiting for food they gave to someone else...the owner said they can't do anything about it....and I asked, there is nothing you can do for your customer which was your mistake...he says and reached in his wallet and said, here is 20.00, I'm sure this is more than what you make an hour? I've seen and heard about this place for quite some time, so I decided that it was about time that I tried it out. We came for the lunch buffet and arrived at a great time. The parking is limited, so avoiding the lunch rush is highly advised. The buffet includes your meal, a drink, and dessert. The staff was friendly and warm, which gives it a real family feel. The food selection is a little sparse, probably because the restaurant is equally small. The selection that was there tasted great. Today the featured entrees were meatloaf and fried chicken. This is probably my worst decision in eating out for the past decade and you should never ever het the lunch buffet even if devil holds your family hostage. There were only 2 entrees for selection, stale fried chicken and stale fried steak. There were also typical canned steam string beans and kidney beans - obviously they were god damn tasteless but in some ways they were better than chicken and "steak". I was very hungry and still could not convince myself that the food was ok, they were not. The girls at the front were rude. They put the hot sauce away in the fridge while we were trying to appease the taste buds. Lord save us.... We left the premise not too long after, disappointed, and after paying about 30$ for 2 adults 2 kids...still hungry This review is to serve as a warning to 1st time goers to this place, be warned and don't make the same mistake as I. This is the second time I have been here. I was hoping it might be better the second time, as everyone says this place is so good. I absolutely don't get it. The staff is horrible. The woman who took our order was sullen, indifferent, and off-putting. The restroom is filthy, as was the pathway past the kitchen leading to the restroom. The sliced chicken sandwich fell apart as soon as I tried to pick it up because the slices of bread were so small. The ambiance is terribly depressing. Absolutely great local diner. Don't miss the following; pimento cheeseburger which is fantastic, roast beef and swiss club, and the chicken salad sandwich is among the best in Irmo/Columbia/Lexington. The buffet also seems to be pretty popular but I'm personally not a fan of buffets. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area for lunch. I haven't tried their breakfast so I can't speak to it. They have free wifi which seems to be a rarity in Irmo/Columbia for some reason. read more

The only reason that this is not five stars is because the tables could use a good wipe, there were crumbs and grease marks all over the table. The prices for the sandwiches were so good! The chicken sandwich was delicious and the fries were fantastic, we also got a ham sandwich which was perfectly toasted! Okay, I messaged them on Facebook and got a reply to call since FB is not monitored by them. Oookay. Went for lunch on Monday, I got the buffet and my girlfriend got two hotdogs. It took 25 minutes for her to get the"won't order again" dogs. The buffet was supposed to have country fried steak. I saw the bin and it had onions and peppers in it(maybe it was Salisbury steak?) we were there 30 minutes and the waitress was fielding questions about it while one of the gentlemen cooking sat and talked with a customer all of to the need(must be an owner since she said nothing to him. Right before we left she told a customer there weren't any even dropped yet. I loved this place, but I have no respect for no respect for paying customers. read more

This place had been around forever!! An staple in Irmo. No fru fru dishes here. I recommend the pimento cheese burger. The pimento cheese just oozes off the burgers. Grab you a hand full of napkins cause this burger is messy! Delish! The ham salad is also very good too. I just eat it out of the cup. We arrived at 5 pm. I hour before closing. First time trying this place. It did not disappoint. The nightly special was hamburger steak. It was a large steak covered with onions. Also a large helping of fried and a cup of Cole slaw. You can also get gravy over the steak or a side cup. I just put A-1 on it like a steak. The fries were home style and very good. Over all a great value for $8.50, tax included. The only thing preventing a 5 star is it took 30 minutes to get the food. It was worth the wait so I guess next time we will come earlier.
