These greens were phenomenal! We were lucky enough to be passing through on a Friday and got the Oxtail. Super tender and tasty. The guys inside were friendly and helpfull.

Great tasting, quality food. I got the ox tail on a bed of rice with collard greens, cabbage, and it came with corn bread. All was delicious! If you are on the fence on trying...this is your sign to go give it a try!

DO NOT LET LOOKS DECEIVE YOU, the food is outstanding! We first drove by and thought they were closed (Monday is the day they are closed ... it was Tuesday). The space is small though they do have some table if you want to eat there, we got ours to-go. I ordered the special, Salisbury steak and chose greens as my side, my co worker ordered the same protein with yams. She said the yams were delicious not too sweet as some places add sugar, 7.8.5 kitchen does not and she ate them all. We both enjoyed the protein that came with mashed potatoes so yummy that I chose to go back and get the cat fish just to try it later in the evening. GET THE CATFISH!!!! The batter was light and seasoned so well, not greasy as I have experienced other places! The ONLY thing I didn't like was the stems in the greens but that's personal preference and didn't impact the taste which was outstanding! Service was fast from order to pick (20min) don't snooze on trying this small but delicious soul food establishment!

My friend and I tried this hole-in-the-wall for lunch and the building was pretty under-developed. It took a while to get our food and the people working there were not rude but not enthusiastic. I ordered the chicken sandwich and it was very dry. The flavor was good but there was too much crunchy bread and not enough sauce. My friend ordered the chicken drumsticks, which she enjoyed.

Wanted a Quick Bite. Ordered Chicken Fried Chicken w Green Tomatoes and Mac and Cheese. Fried Chicken w Yams and Gumbo and Fries. The food was amazing and the service was fast and great. Can't wait to try again!

    Charred fried turkey

This was the worst experience I've ever had on catered food. 7.8.5 K was offering a $25 fee to fry a turkey brought in to cook for thanksgiving. When I got there @ 5p scheduled time they was 30min behind. Ok no problem when I got my food the owner had helped me by putting it in my SUV for me which was helpful. But when I got home to look at my turkey it was completely burnt I mean charred. How in the heck can a restaurant owner even feel comfortable giving me that bird. I will never go there again.

Outstanding, very flavorful food. They have a great selection of items, and different specials (depending on the day).

We went out to dinner last Friday as an early Valentine's Day dinner as we don't like to deal with…read morethe crowds that pile out on February 14. We've dined at The White Linen now at least eight or nine times, including the private chef's table in the old safe (the restaurant is in an old building where a bank once was). The food is always delicious, exciting, thoughtful, and nicely plated. We appreciate the fact there's a fine dining restaurant option in Topeka (it's a lot closer than Kansas City!). But every time we go we are always struck by the service. As good as the food is (and it's very good) the service is always lacking. It feels like the servers (often high school or college age) are play acting at fine dining service. Everything is always just a little off. For example, the silverware: it stays out through the whole meal. Normally, you finish a starter and they take away the used knife and fork and bring new, clean ones. (This could just be easier on the servers but perhaps the restaurant doesn't have enough silverware to do this.) Then, there's usually on every visit one mess up or another. If this happened once on one meal I'd say it was an anomaly, but when there's something every time we dine there you start to question what kind of training goes on with the front of house staff. Here's a list (not an exhaustive one) of things we've experienced: * Entrees for another table being set down in front of us. This by itself is no big deal, but when the problem is pointed out and those entrees are then picked up and set in front of other diners, I wince. * When asking for salt and pepper a small bowl with salt and pepper mixed is provided. I don't know if this is a chef's choice or the server's, but I'd like to dose any salt and pepper myself, thank you. * My wife is allergic to cilantro (not a dislike as in "it tastes like dirt" but an actual EpiPen-carrying allergy) and it was noted both on our reservation on Tock and described verbally to the server when we ordered. A starter arrived with microgreens as a garnish. When my wife asked what the greens were, the server took them back to the chef and another one was sent out because the microgreens had cilantro in them. I worry the server did not communicate the allergy in the first place. * Cleaning equipment left out on a dining table next to ours (see photo). For all the care and attention to the food and the menu, I wish Adam VanDonge paid as much attention to the training of the front of house staff. Certainly, they must be working on the tightest of margins running a fine dining establishment in Topeka. Staff is at an appropriate minimum, but the lack of a Front of House manager shows. When asked what a certain item was on a menu, a server replied, "I don't know. I don't eat this kind of stuff." I wrote such a long review because I have a hunch none of these issues get back to the kitchen. They are kept in the dining room. I think most diners coming to The White Linen are thrilled to have a great night out--and they should. I applaud Mr. VanDonge for the fortitude to keep TWL alive with a vision of great American cuisine. The front of house staff are eager and enthusiastic, don't get me wrong. I just wish the service reflected the quality of the food.

During my stay, I have had the burger (perfectly booked), chicken Cajun pasta (really delicious, not spicy but it's huge!), and the steak tips (tender and good). Everyone seemed to enjoy working there. bar: Because it was daytime drinking, I went with Hops and Harmony, their session IPA ($6 as of 08/2026). It's a solid low IBUs IPA. Their beer list covers most styles and has something for everyone. We saw a handful of cocktails going out and they all looked well made. food: Restaurant was on brunch menu; however, there are plenty of traditional lunch offerings. The standard breakfast fare looks wide-ranging and pretty awesome. I went with High Rail Burger - which is supposed to be a double smash burger - and fries ($13 as of 08/2026). It wasn't a typical, griddled, thin, lacey-edge smash burger, but it was still a very solid offering. Extra credit for excellent fries. My wife chose a half order of biscuits and gravy ($3! Can that be right?) and it was really great. details: Bright, big, open space with inside tables, outside tables, and bar seating. No wait at 1:30 on a Saturday. We parked on the street and there is a garage around the corner.

The interior is filled with murals representing Kansas and wonderfully done. The food a gastronomic delight...especially if you love BBQ and down-home cooking. My husband enjoyed his "Three Pigs" and the fried okra would make every southern Nanny proud! My smoked turkey was smoked and NOT laden with salt, as some that I have eaten at other places. Our server, Gabby, was so friendly, knowledgeable, and professional! She was such a joy! So, as soon as your office or work from home is finished, gallop on down to the Brewer and see for yourself!
