Outstanding!!! Holy cow!! This is our first time here at Niecie's Restaurant. My wife found this place when she was looking for soul food and I saved it on Yelp. I had no idea what was over here on Troost. This place is a total gem for our community. The interior is very nice and well kept. It is definitely a converted Pizza Hut. Charming and lovely. The staff is incredibly friendly and super professional. There must be some sort of wizard back there in the kitchen. This is seriously some of the best food I have ever had! My wife ordered the hamburger steak dinner, which really isn't on the menu, but they made it for her anyway. It was truly extra extraordinary! The green beans were just how we like. Mashed potatoes are all real and lovely. Very hearty! I had the chicken fried steak dinner special for $7.99. It's almost criminal at that price. It's the best chicken fried steak I've had in years and maybe ever. They also have a meatloaf, catfish and live & onions special for $7.99 after 5 pm along with the chicken fry. Hard to believe this was my first visit to this KC staple. I stopped by because they're celebrating 40 years in business and offering a few menu items at their original prices, perfect excuse to finally check it out. I came in with a small wave of people and was seated right away. I ordered the bacon plate with scrambled eggs and potatoes. It was okay, not bad, but not super memorable either. At the throwback price I really can't complain. What really stood out was the vibe, very warm and community centered. Several customers were clearly regulars and greeted by name. It felt like a place where people feel at home, and I loved that energy. Service was quick and kind. I'm glad I finally experienced it and will return to try something else on the menu. read more

First time coming here. Stopped in on a Saturday morning. I had heard of this place for years. Minority, female owned restaurant. Decided on the chicken and waffles. They were some of the best I've ever had. 5 wings and a waffle. They also have the best coffee. Like I would just go there to get a coffee to go, on my way to work, if it was on my way. Service was great Cassie was very sweet and personable. Place is a pretty loud, so if you have hearing issues or anxiety keep that in mind. They do have space for big groups. They prefer your whole group is all there before seating. Parking is good as they have a fairly large lot. Place was busy when we arrived and still busy when we left. I was in town for a concert and was told that this place is a good spot for breakfast in Kansas City. The longevity of the business was the first thing that caught my attention. The place stayed packed. The food was mediocre, but the staff were the stars of the restaurant. Very friendly. Felt like I was in the south. Value 5/5 Taste 4/5 The turkey club ($6.99 special price) was a traditional lunchbox sandwich slathered in mayo and piled high with salty slices of crisp bacon, thinly sliced turkey deli meat, lettuce and tomato. This is a no frills sandwich but, the touch of toasting the bread to perfection took it up a notch. It was served with a classic ruffled chip that definitely came straight out of a giant sized bag. I recently went with a Meetup group and was really excited to taste this soul food iconic KC restaurant. I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. My meal tasted like mediocre quality cafeteria style food. I had the baked chicken with greens and mashed potatoes and the chicken was a very small leg-thigh quarter that was really over salted but tender and cooked properly. The collard greens were the best thing on the plate, But still nothing to ride home about. The mashed potatoes lacked seasoning and were too milky. The gravy tasted like it was out of a can. Our tables food wasn't served at the same time and several folks didn't get their meal until most of us were almost done with ours. We all also ordered bread and for our entire table we got less than 10 pieces of small muffin sized cornbread and they charge $2 per person for it. I tried the catfish and sausage gravy, both of which can be suspect, but here they were good. You can always count on me to find a gem in the neighborhood. Niecie's has the recipe for the perfect breakfast spot! You are greeted warmly at the entrance, and the restaurant always seems to be packed. Tables turn over relatively quickly, but it's worth the wait on the weekends! They have an extensive menu with tons of breakfast options. The food came out super quick! You pay at the register near the front door. There's a reason the chicken and waffles are "world famous." No gimmicks, no unnecessary additions or frills. Just delicious classic fried chicken and a tasty diner waffle with tons of butter. A hefty portion size! The parking lot is large but gets pretty full during peak hours! As a tourist in the KC metro area, as well as a musician attending the 47th Annual National Convention of NPM (National Pastoral Musicians), I definitely wanted to go & explore what's outside of the Sheraton Crown Center neighborhood - and little did I know, I'd end up way down south along the Troost Avenue thoroughfare - and here I am at Niecie's. They have a simple formula to keep customers coming back: serve seriously satisfying, affordable comfort food, and maintain the lightest and quite possibly friendliest atmosphere in town - where the host memorizes your name on first visit, and even the window washer greets you hello, and hopes you enjoyed your meal. Denise Hayes, owner of Niecie's, has been serving soul food to Kansas City for more than 30 years, both from the restaurant's original location on 59th and Prospect, and now from the one I visited at 64th and Troost - which have been open for business since 2009; bears the familiar shape of an old Pizza Hut, but its interior - clean, outfitted in floral wallpaper and with light tile flooring - certainly feels more like Grandma's house than a pizza empire. Traditional counter service (where the best conversations are always had) is available, as well as full table service. Unfortunately, I had gone for breakfast & wasn't able to indulge in Niecie's signature dish, that is Chicken and Waffles. The staff's t-shirts proclaim it the best chicken and waffles in town - and it would be difficult to disagree. A fluffy, inch-thick waffle, sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a heaping spoonful of butter, is topped with three crispy, fried full chicken wings. You can eat the dish any way you like, but we may humbly recommend at least one forkful of the crispy chicken with skin along with a bite of syrup-coated waffle: savory meets sweet, crunchy and buttery. It is a satisfying portion but not overwhelming, and at under $16, it is also likely the most affordable chicken and waffles available in all of KC. You really could stop at the chicken and waffles and check out the rest of their menu, but the restaurant offers much more, and seems to be a particularly good Sunday breakfast spot. I can imagine throngs of people file in & out in their church finest, savoring hearty full-plate dishes including pork chops, a T-Bone, or even the incredibly-priced $6.99 Sunrise Breakfast, which comes with sausage or bacon, egg, toast or a biscuit that comes with fresh brewed coffee. You know I had to get that, given I went on an early Wednesday morning, and I was the only diner that the hostess didn't seem to mind my low key vibe! Haha! One can also just skip straight to dinner. Niecie's meatloaf is another star: it is tangy, moist and coated with a shimmery brown gravy that is dangerously rich and good. All dinner meals are served with two sides: options include greens, black-eyed peas, navy beans, macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes, and all are served with cornbread or dinner rolls. You have so many choices that it will be tough to decide! The daily specials board are by the entrance that feature items that you are unlikely to find almost anywhere else in Kansas City: overflowing bowls of navy beans with ham hocks are served on Tuesdays, or come Thursdays for the oxtails and pork neck bones. More conventional, though no less home-style, offerings include salmon croquettes on Mondays, or whole fried catfish on Saturdays. Dessert here is also a must, though it's understandable if you have to take it home. Guests can choose from homemade chocolate and caramel cakes, loaded with hand-swirled icing, or the restaurant's specialty: peach cobbler. Preserved, spiced peaches are baked under a layer of folded, butter-rich pastry, and the dish is served hot at the table. I ordered one for to-go, and I was also told that if dining in to eat right away, ice cream can be served on top by request. I definitely regretted that last part LOL. And the food is just part of the visit (perhaps the most important part, but still not everything). Many of the servers and hosts have worked at Niecie's for decades, and genuine warmth and friendliness is clearly part of the job. The fantastic service and consistently good food have proven to be Niecie's keys to longevity. May it last another 30 years and more - and I definitely would like to dine with them when I get a chance to be in the KC metro again! read more

I had heard good things about Niecie's over the years, and they were all accurate.. the food here is fantastic! Lately I'm trying to lay off the heavier foods, but you know what, sometimes you gotta just roll with it. I met an old friend here on a super cold, rainy day and it was nice to get the full experience. It's soul food to the max, and it's done to perfection here. It looks like a traditional diner inside, and the menu is loaded up, including breakfast all day. I opted for a ham & cheese omelette with some veggies thrown in and was just blown away by how well prepared it was. The eggs were velvety (okay, buttery is probably more accurate) and the ham is like a smoked ham you'd get around Christmas.. none of this thin, deli meat nonsense. The crispy fried hash brown potatoes were a star of the show as well. I didn't eat the toast but it looked OK, just a couple slices of white bread. Service was friendly and efficient, and I would definitely come back here. It's going to have way better food than some of the trendy spots. read more

I was in KC and decided I wanted to try something local. After playing Top Golf I was ready to eat! My phone landed on Niecie's. DISAPPOINTED!!!! Ugh. But Not a total loss, liver n onions and gravy mash potatoes were good. Yams were missing a little more nutmeg and cinnamon and maybe sugar.... It might be canned!(clutch the pearls! And cuss the devil!!). The corn was BASIC certainly not sweet corn. It is possible this was that steamer bag corn, which is good but don't say it's sweet corn unless it is. I doctored it up at the table with butter, salt and pepper. The roll was room temp and not recently warm in other words day old. Pretty but I would rather it be warm The Mac n cheese I sent back. Soul food Mac n cheese is baked in an oven, this was some half effort stovetop mixture that was watered..... I would have rather they tried to make the shells and Velveeta at least the sauce would stay on the noodles. The chili was basic and came with two cornbread muffins. I think the owner is trying so no shade, BUT I think training the staff to make even the most basic BAKED Mac n cheese would garner points. read more

Classic spot in KC known for their chicken and waffles. In fact, when I think about chicken and waffles this is the first place that comes to mind. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and juicy and moist. If that wasn't enough, the waffle is perfect addition with that sweet syrupy goodness, topped with large dollop of butter. I can never make it past this dish, but I'm sure the other items on menu are also superb. We finished off with the Boston cream pie, they have a large selection of desserts as well. Diner Food, nothing more nothing less. Niecie's has been a staple in Kansas City for YEARS! I finally got a chance to try it out. The place isn't huge but I didn't have to wait, I visited them on a Saturday morning around 8am. I wanted French toast with sausage and eggs, because there isn't a meal like that nor will they let you substitute the pancake breakfast, I got the sunrise breakfast which includes eggs, potatoes or hash browns and your choice of protein. Their plates are a bit strange being the garnish they choose which is parsley and one single carrot... I know very random. The shining star on my plate was the French toast, it tasted like big momma was in the back kitchen whipping these up for me. It had great vanilla and cinnamon flavoring, they weren't soggy nor dry...they were just right. There is a juice that comes with the meal but it's so small you can consider it a shot glass. The second shining star on my plate was their seasoned potato's FANTASTIC! I wish all places seasoned potatoes were like this. The one thing about this restaurant is I didn't feel they were very welcoming, just because you have been in the city for years doesn't mean I know how you operate. They lacked to welcome people when coming in. I stood at the front and didn't know if I should seat myself or wait. They should also explain how things work when it's time to pay your bill. I waited at my table for at least 10 minutes with waitresses looking at me and walking by. I finally got up and went to the counter to speak to a man that visited all the tables in the restaurant but mine. I asked him how I should pay my bill and he said here at the counter. He then proceeded to say he wasn't going to ask me if I liked it cause I ate my plate clean..... The waitress seemed annoyed at me that I didn't know the specials and she just didn't seem like she wanted to be there. This is another one of those, "how come it took me so long to come here" reviews. Niecies has been open for 40 years and today was visit #1 (author hangs his head in shame), I've had it bookmarked on Yelp for probably 10 years and I enjoy home cooking / soul food and I love supporting independent shops on the eastside of the city, so I have zero explanation as to why, so I'll just try to forget my past failures and focus on going forward. After the belly bustin brunch here today, going forward or just getting out of the booth is quite a task. I couldn't make up my mind between two of my faves B&G and Chicken and Waffles, so I ordered the C&W and a side bowl of sausage gravy to satiate both of the demonic voices tugging at my internal emotions. Damn good gravy with tons of sausage. I sprinkled the hot sauce on top and alternated between dipping some wonderfully fried chicken wings in it and then just pretending it was a bowl of healthy oatmeal and eating it by the spoonful (author once again hangs his head in shame). The waffle was huge, malty, crisp and covered in a giant dollop of real butter that melted all over the grilled patterns of batter. The spreading of the maple syrup added the sweetness that gave my meal the full complement of all textures and flavors... sweet, spicy, crunchy, creamy, savory, cool, hot... everything but sour; definitely nothing sour about this experience. My wife enjoyed the open faced meatloaf with a mountain of mashed potatoes, smothered in brown gravy with a base of white bread. She loved it and I had a sample just so I could experience the brunch meat trifecta; I concur with her opinion. Our server was a professional. Okay first when we first arrived no servers wanted the table. The cashier had to ask "who got this table". I want to add that the crowd that Niecie's is looking for has to be a predominantly Caucasian crowd or an older folks type of crowd that can't have any seasoning on their food. This was BY FAR the worst food I've ever had in my entire 28 years of living. I've worked at nursing homes and the type of food that was served to me today is VERY similar to what we serve old people. Mind you I called before I came and asked them are their greens homemade (made in house) they claimed it was but it definitely gave canned greens. I asked were there any meat in the greens they also told me over the phone that it was. There was NO meat in sight for them greens. Feel like I got played because I asked before driving 30 minutes out there. The chicken was very DRY maybe it's old or they cooked it too long. The spaghetti was like canned spaghetti as well. Limp noodles. No flavor. Chef boyardee spaghetti tastes way better than that!!!!! That is such a shame. On the other plate. The pork chops were dry as well. But it was the best thing that we had ordered. The gravy and rice were okay tasting tho so it was atleast edible. Them greens and spaghetti were not edible like whatsoever unless you're 60+ and need mushy flavorless food. I would never come back for dinner. Their breakfast I've had a few times and it was actually okay. But it's hard to mess up pancakes and eggs anyway. But the dinner was sooooo nasty that immediately after I still ended up having to drive to raising canes chicken place for my real dinner. I recently hosted a Meetup event at Niecie's to celebrate their incredible 40 years in business, and I couldn't have chosen a better spot. First off: shoutout to the staff for being so accommodating! Although their policy is to seat the entire party together, they graciously made an exception as our 15 attendees trickled in at their own pace. One guest (bless him) didn't arrive until 30 minutes past our reservation--at my encouragement, no less!--and still, the team helped him get a meal to go so he didn't miss out completely. Top-tier grace under pressure. As a first-timer, I wasn't sure what to expect... aside from rumors of 1985 prices in 2025 (yes, please). I ordered the baked chicken, sweet corn, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and an iced tea--all for $10.90 plus tip. Where else can you find food this hearty and delicious for less than a drive-thru combo? Not a cafeteria, not a chain--only Niecie's. Our server handled the large group like an absolute champ, and when one of the plates came out incorrect, it was swapped out quickly and kindly--no drama, just professionalism. In hindsight, I should've capped the RSVP to avoid a few ungrateful folks from tagging along (note to self). But even so, the warmth and soul of Niecie's rose above any minor hiccups. They treated us like family, even as we "ascended" on their space with way more people than a casual Wednesday night deserves. Came to visit our son and wanted some "more" soul food after Thanksgiving. Tried one place and it was closed so we decided to try Niecie's. I am from the area and had heard about this restaurant from friends who still live here, but was glad I tried it for myself. My husband, son and I enjoyed just about everything we ordered. We were greeted by an kind older gentleman who was seated at the counter by the door. He asked how many and told us where we could sit. My husband and I both ordered the short rib (special of the day). His sides were greens and yams. Mine were greens and northern beans. Our son order the 3 pc fried chicken, dressing, and greens. Short ribs were tender and well cooked perfectly just were a tad too salty. Greens, dressing yum yum and yum. Beans were not seasoned enough but well cooked. Chicken was fried and seasoned to perfection. Yams were good, but not great. Rolls And Cornbread - Yes!!! Our waitress was friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. She gave us suggestions as it was our first time there. Busboy had a bad attitude or disposition when we came in. He gave us water and silverware but kind of laid them down hard. I then saw him "toss" other wrapped silverware on the surrounding tables. When our waitress approached, he was passing by at the same time..she stopped so he could go by, but he told her to...when she did, he grunted and rolled his eyes. Rude! I ordered the 2 piece chicken dinner white meat,potatoes and gravy, fried green beans and a roll. The chicken was 1/2 breast and a wing. It was so over cooked it was dry like jerky, the potatoes were flat out nasty ,the green beans were a soggy greasey mess. Mt husband had liver and onions,mashed potatoes gravy and black eyed peas. We were seated without waiting and offered drinks before being happily greeted by our delightful server Cassie. She was personable, candid, and energetic although I would be remiss to not mention we had to ask for silverware and later, a refill of coffee served in really small mugs. I opted for an omelette, potatoes, and a pancake. They were all wonderful, especially the potatoes. My wife had the chicken and waffles. She commented that the waffle was "light and fluffy" and shared one of the chicken wings but monitored my bitesize very carefully.
