Refused service to a friend, to a by-stander, and to a policeman who came to help. Arrogant, rude employee. Never will return.

A slice of coffee cake paired with a latte is a classic combination -- and a perfect match for Portlander like me. Despite how busy they are, I got my coffee in less than four minutes.

Walking in, we were immediately greeted by the smiling staff and there were already quite a few people working on their laptops in various corners of the coffee shop. Looks like a great place to work or study. I got the Black Forest Mocha and a cinnamon roll to share. My drink was not too sweet which I appreciated but it did feel less full than expected. They did warm up the cinnamon roll which was soft and delicious and I love that they source their pastries from surrounding small businesses like the gluten free Blue Moon Bakery! Smart partnership! My friend got her toddler daughter an Italian Soda and they gave her a kids whipped cream cup with confetti sprinkles which was super cute. She also found the hidden bear and got a sticker as well. I love when businesses make it fun for the kids. Bonus they had a local artist spotlight showcase which was so neat! I'll have to come back to try more drinks and food but could definitely see this shop as a great hangout spot to catch up with friends or get some work/study done. I have been looking for a decent breakfast/brunch place close by but so far no luck there. I am still recovering from renal failure so my mobility is severely limited. I travel mostly at the pleasure of the Veterans Transportation Service or Trimet Lyft. Today's Dr appointment finished up sooner than expected so I had some time to kill before the van returned to take me home. So I fired up my tablet and took a look on Yelp to see if there was anything of interest close by. Enter Insomnia Coffee. Lots of positive reviews. Right around the corner. So... off I go. I an a US Navy brownwater sailor. We drink coffee that tastes like coffee. No additives. None. Not even cream or (gasp) sugar. So when I told the barista [HA! The person who pours coffee into a cup] that i wanted a cup of coffee black I got this sort of deer in the headlights look. What? ...I'm sure she was thinking... no Madagascar cinnamon? no foaming goop? no stale crouton crumbs? no pumpkin pie spice? Ummmm seriously? People want their coffee to taste like pumpkin? Yikes. No Miss... just a cuppa Joe. Just like my first heart throb, Anna Mae Bullock....strong and black. And I have to say, insomnia delivered. Not a bad cup of coffee at all. Although I didn't really want to hang out there since it appeared that I had zero in common with anyone I saw there... hogging the comfortable looking chairs. So I had it in a paper cup, to go. Now I have a "thing" about drinking coffee from a large, ceramic mug.... I loathe tasting paper in my coffee and yes I can tell it's in a paper cup even blindfolded. but I digress. They did have a whole display area of decadent looking pastries and not the tiny, overpriced, bogus looking stuff you see at Starbucks. Not that i would ever go into a Starbucks even to use the rest room. They had several pies that made my mouth water and some gooey breakfast glazed things that would have seriously spiked my glucose. so I reluctantly passed. Perhaps next time :)

I have never thought about lunch when going to Longbottom, but that changed yesterday. My Mother-in-Law had a chicken sandwich, as my Father-in-Law but my wife had a make your own sandwich that consisted of Pesto, Mozzarella, and Tomatoes. She loved it. I had a Reuben and it was perfectly served with chips on marbled rye. We love Longbottom and will be back soon. The service was OK, but they asked for a tip before providing any. That's always off putting. Especially when I had to change out the coffee carafe to get my own cup of coffee. That said, the coffee was nothing special. It was cool to see the roasting facility through the glass in the dining area. Now let's talk about the breakfast. My husband had the eggs Benedict and it was OK. I ordered the West Coast Hash and eggs and it wasn't OK. My over medium eggs were microwave rubber. Moved like silly putty. The hash was 99% potatoes and microscopic squares of ham and chopped dried bacon. The meal was very unpleasant. The best part of the hash were the diced jalapeños. This place is a one and done for me.
