This is one of the few "Hawaiian" eateries outside of the islands which reminded me of the many Mom & Pop restaurants you can find on Oahu. The service was also very "Hawaiian style". The staff was friendly, chatty and happy to help. All the food we ordered, looked and tasted like any Hawaiian eatery in the islands. You could pick up the entire eatery and drop it onto a lot on the North Shore and you would think it had always been there! This was by far away the best Hawaiian food I've had on the mainland. I used to go to the cart down on 9th and Washington. I went to the cart over at Lloyd Center today and thought the Kalua Pork, Shoyu Chicken and the 808 Chicken was very good. They changed their recipe for Mac Salad, and I was very disappointed. They have added peas, and it has a very strong onion flavor that was unpleasant. I love a good Mac salad and unfortunately that was not. I would go back for their proteins, but not the Mac salad. Please go back to a traditional Mac salad. read more

the food is delicious . i had the mahi mahi and shrimp with butter sauce. i was almost finished before I realized I forgot to get a picture . i brought home the trifecta for my BF. He loved it. Honestly having to smell all that deliciousness from Beaverton to East Vancouver was really difficult . Oh and the butter MOchi is not what you know of mochi. it's baked like a brownie and the inside is gooey and choowy but anywhere that touches the pan is caramelized and crunchy. Not very good food, dirty feeling place, uses names to call on orders. While it isn't easy finding good hawaiin food here, there are a handful that are far better, at comparable prices, with better atmosphere. Aloha Spirit in the form of Food!! They always make me feel so welcomed here. Its like being back home in Hawaii! Always greeted, always served with a smile. The food is always on point. So ONO!! I been in Portland for a few years now and was craving good authentic Hawaiian Poke. The make your own bowl places are good and all, but I want that fresh fish, buttery texture and a salty finish. I get that here at 808. Last time I was here I got the Poke Sampler which was 2 of their Ahi Poke and their Salmon Poke. My goodness... It was enough for 2 meals. They said 10oz but it really felt like a whole pound! So much freshness and great texture. It's like they made it right next to the ocean in the islands. You get to even choose one of their special sauces, I always get the Sweet Wasabi. Man, I can eat anything with this stuff!! I dream about it and to put a ring on it. There is more space on the inside. This location does not offer any of the happy hour deals. Not sure how to feel, usually this business comes to my work via food truck, decided to take my son to lunch to the brick and mortar in Beaverton. The Chicken Katsu is his favorite dish to eat at Sushi places. By the looks of the photos on Yelp everything added up but when his food came it was made with chicken thigh not breast and he ended up peeling the heavily breaded chicken apart to eat it. So this is a review of food that was ordered to go. First time being to this place I wasn't sure what to go with so I ended up going with the Chicken Combo Plate. It did take a hot minute before I was able to eat the food but it was still a little warm when I did. Food was ok but it did not make me see sandy beaches and clear waters. I did find the shoyu chicken to be a little dry and it felt like it needed some kind of sauce and the fried chicken was ok but was like eating karaage. Maybe the issue was that this place was hyped up as being so awesome by coworkers so my mental bar was set high. I cannot believe it has taken me this long to write up a review for this spot. I have genuinely never been in here and I discovered what to order by trial and error...actually, it was a sort of accident. At most Hawaiian food places I have always loved the Kahlua pork which is a pretty common thing. So my first time ordering I did that and was not that impressed - it seemed overly salty. But it was seemingly the only real choice for Hawaiian delivery and their mac salad was pretty damned tasty. Like most people, I had seen fried chicken on their menu and was confused and never thought I would order it. THIS is what you should order people...these are actually nuggets of chicken magic. So tender, juicy and tasty - and nothing like fried chicken at all. I usually order the combo that has the fried chicken and chicken shoyu which is also quite good. Another great option is their pork belly. I also have been known to add on their fried wontons as well. Those food portions are really something else. They give you a lot so you will surely not leave hungry. And you will surely try to finish because the food is excellent. It's called 808 Grinds, so you may as well get the 808 Fried chicken, which is effectively mochiko chicken with some spicy mayo to dip. Grab it in a sandwich and makes for one hefty lunch. I would advise you split it with someone as it might make your afternoon just naptime afterwards otherwise. There are a lot of food establishments here in greater Portland that supposedly sell "Hawaiian" food. Some are good, many are not. Some are actually owned by people who have deep roots in the islands, others are run by bearded hipsters who spell "poke" with a kahako or an emphasis over the "e" and have absolutely no ties to Hawaii, much less Hawaiian culture. 808 Grinds is one of the legit ones!! And we made our rounds through many of the junk ones when we moved here from Hawaii last summer. Being lifelong Oahu residents, one of the harder adjustments for us moving to the PNW, was being away from the food. As trivial as that sounds, it's a legit thing - just the smell of good ol' local plate lunch can take us and the keiki back home. That's what we get at 808 Grinds. Walk in, and you can almost immediately feel the aloha. Talk story with the owner a bit or other patrons there who are also local transplants, and it's like catching up with an old friend from hanabata days. The food here is ono. The flavors are authentic. And the hidden gem sometimes is whatever rotating desserts that they happen to have on at the time. On our most recent visit, they had mango bread pudding, and it was seriously broke da mout. Other places can prance around with their "pōkè" bowl nonsense with their silly 35 toppings like sunflower seeds and dried cranberries. Any real local wouldn't touch that garbage. It's straight shoyu, Hawaiian salt, limu, onions, and other authentic flavors... and that's what you get here! I've not run into a single Hawaii native / local transplant in the area who doesn't have this place as one of their go-to's. That's saying something! read more

This place is great. You get way more than what you pay for when it comes to Hawaiian food. $11 for a big plate of chicken, rice, and Mac salad? Yes please! The chicken itself was a little dry for my liking, but it was still very flavorful. The Mac salad was good, and the rice mixed with the 808 soy sauce was the bomb dot com. Tl;dr: Food was cherreh, pie was mayjah, good kine people. Local boy approved. A very important preface: I am from Hawaii. I moved here in 2012 for college and stayed for grad school while I finished my doctorate degree-- in that timeframe, I have visited many Hawaiian food restaurants and only a few are held with high regard. This is one of those places. I work in Beaverton right across the plaza where 808 Grinds is at. It became a daily battle to NOT go there for lunch (plate lunches make great lunches because your leftovers make for a tasty dinner or lunch for tomorrow!). I finally gave in one overcast day after work and found myself immersed in Hawaii memorabilia (past and present) and the sweet sounds of Common Kings blasting on the speakers. I knew it would be a good visit. I ordered the 808 combo which comes with 808 fried chicken and kalua pork (bc no one from Hawaii will just choose one entree). Most plates come with a steamed white rice and macaroni salad. The 808 fried chicken is battered and fried, and the kalua pig is a smoky pulled pork. Both were tender and tasty. In this review of their plate lunch, I will personally mark them down for their macaroni salad. While tasty and reminiscent of mac salad at home, the peas were... [as my young patients would say:] not the vibe. This could be because I am not used to peas in the macaroni salad and I don't love deviation from a timeless recipe. While I stand by my opinion of the mac salad, I do have to say it is a welcome side dish to the plate lunch and I found myself eating it regardless. Here is where I will round out my overall review (an additional mark where I took one off for their mac salad): Desserts. My girlfriend loves sweets so I had to take home some Chocolate Haupia (coconut) pie, a rare find on the mainland. Any similarities to Ted's on Hawaii would be an immediate favorite here. The chocolate:haupia ratio favored the chocolate nearly at 2:1, but the richness of the haupia carried through beautifully. The toasted coconut flakes at the top were a nice texture and matched the shortcrust that they used. This place has my local boy approval. read more

Food: I usually go for their fried chicken but this time I decided to change it up! I got their ginger garlic pork and it was very good. For $9, I got two scoops of rice, a hearty amount of pork shoulder meat with veggies at the bottom and a nice scoop of mac salad. The pork was tender and it's hard to find a good place with tender pork, trust me! The flavor was perfect as I don't like things too gingery but this was nice. The rice was nice as it was not too hard and I love their mac salad. Who knows how fatty it is but it was GOOD! Food carts are the way to eat in Portland. 808 Grinds is on the corner of a big pod. They usually have a small line and a short wait to get your food. They definitely hustle, knowing most people have limited time for lunch. The menu is simple: plates or combo plates and musubi. That's it. You can choose from shoyu chicken, loco moco, kalua pig and 808 fried chicken. We split a trifecta (3 item combo) of shoyu chicken, kalua pig and 808 fried chicken. This came with a scoop of rice and mac salad. Yummmmyyyyyy!!!! The serving size was plentiful and enough for sharing... but I didn't want to share after the first few bites. LOL. The kalua was on the drier side, but moist and not salty. The shoyu chicken was tender and sweet but savory. The 808 chicken was good. It's hard to get a nice crisp when you're cooking out of a little trailer, but it had a really good flavor. If you have the time, you can walk to the little open courtyard across the street and people watch while you eat your lunch. Portland is small enough that you can walk from one side to the other easily, but if you're driving... street parking is a premium. Don't forget to feed the meter since they do ticket. read more

Today I ducked onto the Nike campus to get some lunch from 808. I'd seen them there earlier in the day ( about 11) and formulated a plan. So when I was hungry and out of mtgs at 1:30 I zipped right back there. I like shoyu chicken, a lot, so I went with that. For $7 it comes with a scoop of rice and one of mac salad. The nice young lady who took my order was friendly. I thought the shoyu was tender, a bit too salty, with a little bit of heat. Not bad. The rice was,well, rice. A little hard. But fine. The mac salad was ok. It had random stuff in it, corn and maybe peppers? Green onions? I have eaten a lot of plate lunches in Hawaii and usually mac salad is best when it's super simple. No corn, no random bits, just mayo and noodles and maybe some pepper. I frankly have given my shoyu chicken loving heart and macaroni salad eating tummy to Roxy's Island Grill but this is pretty good, too. Give it a try. read more

Thanks to having a bestie from Hawaii, my palate (and appreciation) for Hawaiian cuisine has been elevated. 808 keeps it simple - you have your staple Hawaiian proteins like kahlua pork, shoryu chicken and the 808 fried chicken - which comes as a nice sampler in their Trifecta plate (ordered). They also have other house specials like grilled garlic pork (ordered) and tempura eggplant (they ran out - makes me wanna go back and try it now). Desserts include a guava chiffon cake (ordered - refreshing and not too sweet - would order again). The Trifecta plate came with two scoops of rice and their divine mac salad. Even though I found the kahlua pork too salty, both chicken specialties (the shoryu and the 808 one) were juicy and delectable. The service was sweet. One of the workers (he was also the cashier) saw that my friend and I didn't really touch the kahlua pork and asked if we wanted more chicken (we said no because we were full but now I'm staring at my leftovers at work the next day and mentally kicking myself for not saying yes - my ongoing psychological problem).
