It was payday, my Friday, and my plans to make spaghetti carbonara were foiled by frozen bacon ( oops) and a mountain of dirty dishes ( not. my. job.) and my freakin' exhaustion. Teen wanted boba, and we decided to order Mediterranean from this place which also strangely sells boba. Yes, I rewarded the chore avoidance. Sue me. I worked four tens, all week my mental health clients were stressed and distressed, and I was honestly a lump. We both ordered a Moroccan stewed chicken that comes with saffron rice, salad, and three spicy sauces - one yogurt and maybe sumac? , one sriracha, and one yogurt mixed with sriracha maybe? We liked the rice, chicken, salad, and the yogurt sauce. Just ok though. Not omg good. I wish the two other sauces had been in separate containers and not on the rice. My mint and honey tea was fine. Kid's boba was not full. Not because it spilled either, because it was sealed with the boba seal lid thingy. For $6 that was disappointing. The hummus and dolmades plate came with one sad not good pita, ONE, and I think our Uber eats driver flung it out the window like kids used to deliver newspapers from their bikes because yogurt sauce was freaking everywhere. The hummus was not great. Teen ( the dolmades fan) said the grape leaves were good. Probably not a repeat in store. One and done. read more

Ok. Ordered a chicken gyro for $14 then he charged me $15.40. When I asked what the extra $1.40 was for he said it was a fee for using my card. The gyro was 2 out 5. Very dishonest food cart. read more

It was our first night in Portland and we got in pretty late. We had a pup with us so bringing him in a restaurant without a patio was a no-go. All the restaurants with patios were either closing for the night so we decided to look around for a food cart. We found Zaalook. The owner was pretty nice and we enjoyed the food even though it was the only place opened at the time. The area though is sketchy as there were a lot of homeless and/or drug addict looking strange people. Nonethless no one bothered us and we had a pretty good and affordable meal. Nothing bad to say. read more

We had the most wonderful experience here. They were closed and just about to open as we arrived, but the owner was super friendly and advised us of a few places nearby to see. Because they had been so friendly, we then returned for Bubble tea afterward. We struck up such a nice conversation with the owner's wife, who was from Morocco about our own visit there. She brewed us up the most delicious sweet Moroccan mint tea reminiscent of her homeland. Genuinely good people and delicious beverages! read more

Worst gyro of my life. 90% lettuce and the 10% meat I'd have to guess was of some rodent species (almost entirely cartilage). I spit up over half of the meat so safe to say I got about 2-5% meat from 100% of the gyro. I've never had such a sad lamb gyro. I could cry. This place is a disgrace. read more

Okay, but I'm not sure why so many 4 and 5 star reviews. I found it to be really good but its located in a not so clean part of town and the food truck looks a bit run down. Had the lamb gyro and kufta gyro. The bread was soft, it was tasty. The lamb was really soft so I think it was mixed with some kind of bread product to make it go farther. You get a lot less meat in the Kufta than the lamb gyro. read more

Late night food is what I was craving, late night food is what I got. But better than expected. Yes, I know that food trucks have stepped up their game over the past few years. No better than here in Portland where the food pods and trucks are mainstays. We had been over at the Crystal for a night of 80s music and a bouncing third floor.... unnerving. We were wandering about and came upon Moroccan food and a pizza window, but neither was grabbing me. As we were walking on we saw a guy with a gyro. Looked good. He told us where he got and then proceeded to escort us across Burnside to said food truck. Zaalook was what you would expect it to be. Middle Eastern folks playing Spanish music.... isn't that what you expected??? He was really friendly and even thanked the guy for bringing us over. Apparently, he was a regular. There was some good food to be had. Gyros, burgers and baklava. They had two sizes of gyros $5/6 the bigger one had more meat and a lot more feta on it. I asked for some hot peppers, but he told me he'd add sriracha to it. I had a choice of lamb or beef and I chose lamb. There was a good mix of lettuce, tomato and onion and of course plenty of feta cheese. It was worth the extra buck to get the larger one. It was a much better option for the evening than the other two choices I had seen. There were also taco trucks and soul food nearby as well, but on this night, a gyro was just what I needed. I don't know how many people know of this place because there are so few reviews on it. The truck is unassuming. It's not one of the ones with the fancy graphics all over it, so mostly you miss it. It is worth making your way over there. As some of the other reviews mentioned, it's a "hidden gem" right in front of your face. Good food, friendly service. What else do you need? read more

Made a stop to get some food in Portland on our road trip from LA to Seattle and found this little gem. The cook had forgotten my ridiculous order and instead of guessing he asked me to recap so he wouldn't get it wrong. Service was awesome and personable. The food was fantastic! The tzatziki sauce was amazing and the lamb gyro was the best I've ever had. Try it with sriracha! The feta cheese, sriracha and tzatziki sauce balanced really well and added an extra kick without the sriracha being overpowering. Everything was made fresh to order so it took a little bit, but totally worth it for the quality. read more

Lamb gyro with tzatziki sauce. They also add the legendary siracha sauce (good on everything). Had it for lunch. Came back and got it again a few hours later (don't judge me :P). Awsome and the two gentlemen that work there (one of them is the owner) are really nice and outgoing. Great experience all around. Hypothesis of the name: Someone was looking for it and couldn't find it. So this person settled for less and ate at another spot. Then they came across the incredible smell of this places food and saw the guys running it and they said "zaaaaaa! Look!"... ok maybe not. Midnight food run = You never know what you're going to get in downtown Portland near Burnside. Lol. The streets were a mix of people who were uttering profanities and talking to themselves, voodoo donut patrons, bar hoppers, and others who just got off work and were hangry. Thankfully, there was plenty of parking nearby. What first stood out to me was that the servers were so friendly and it felt like they made a positive presence in the neighborhood. They even had good attitudes when it came towards dealing with snarky remarks from more "complicated" patrons or those finagling pennies, and put a lot of care into what they made and served. And it showed... The signature lamb gyro was heavenly. Meat was moist and not too rich, veggies were fresh and crisp, sauces had great but not overpowering flavor, and the pita bread they used was perfect- moist, warm and so good even on its own! It was 2:30 am, and my friend and I needed food. Restaurants were not open anymore but thankfully, this area is food trucks galore! I'm glad that I picked zaalooks truck. The chicken and rice plate was delicious. I think his son was taking the orders, he was so sweet and very on top of it. Good experience! read more

Zaalok is one of the best Mediterranean food destinations in Portland. It's also a food cart that is open later than 95% than all other food carts in the entire city for your ultra late night munchie needs. The manager is very nice and has a lot of tolerance and patience in a stressful environment right there on Burnside. This food cart also offers delivery options via Postmates and Uber Eats as late as around 3AM during some nights. read more

It's just a food truck so nothing too special here. As mentioned in some other reviews the area here is not that nice with plenty of homeless people strewn everywhere. It's not a particularly nice part of town but it's ok for the most part and they don't bother you. The owner or workers are all very nice. The food itself however was just ok. I wasn't expecting something amazing but it's not one of your gorumet or hipster food trucks - just some place to get food so don't expect too much. Overall I don't think I would come back here again. read more

This is hands down the best Mediterranean/Gyro place out there. I've been ordering from this guy on Postmates for a little while, and his knowledge and ability to use that system are unsurpassed. Each order I feel a little personal touch. The quality of the meat is like nowhere else I've experienced in town. The side salad is really a delicious full meal in itself. (But don't deprive yourself of the entree.) Don't miss out on the Philly cheesesteak either. It'll make your night.... and then haunt you for nights to come. read more

in between 3 and 4 stars it's hard to give an accurate star rating. some things can easily be improved to bump it to a 4. so, they are open late! the gyro is good. it's not too big - somewhere close to medium size. tastes like a gyro - other items also available. a gyro here is about $7. not too bad but, there are many carts within vicinity selling similar gyros for $5. that's not that big of a difference but what ticked me off was the extra charge for using a credit card. read more

The gyros are good, and the location is very convenient. I've had gyros in other locations where the spices and meat flavors are fantastic. So this is a 4 star, but it is still really good. We tried the beef and the lamb and they were good. Forgot to take a picture before grubbing. read more

Very sub-par service, sub-par food, and lack of numeracy (ability to do math from a coupon). Pros +Food didn't taste bad +Guy behind the counter was decently friendly Cons -Took forever to get my food ready, 2 others' were served and got their food before me*(See story) - Had a $10 off coupon, instead, 1 entree (of $7) was deducted instead. Not cool. - Food made me sick afterwards - Hours kind of suck Bottom line, the food is alright, but the service, quality, and sickness afterwards render this a poor option, even among the low standards you may be accustomed to with most food carts. Story: I ordered 3 entrees, a couple sides, and 3 drinks. The guy started one of the orders, took another 2 peoples' order, finished my first entree, only to let it sit out for 10+minutes while he made the other peoples' orders and the remaining two entrees of my own. This was on an ABSOLUTELY DEAD NIGHT. In the 20 minues I was there waiting, only 1 customer ordered before me (no one else around) and two guys came after me, but there wasn't anybody else even ON THE STREET, let alone ordering from them otherwise. Then, while I waited, he tried to explain that my food took longer to make, when the first item he prepared was the same as the other two. Disappointment. Afterwards, the three of us got pretty sick near food poisoning that lasted about a day for each of us and that was the only thing the three of us had in common for any food or drinks around that time period. :( read more

Delicious lamb gyros and Moroccan Chicken. The lamb gyros are not the processed meat mush carved off a rotisserie like most gyros. The lamb chunks were tender and flavorful and the whole pita was really large and stuffed with lettuce, tzatziki and tomatoes. I think the pita was homemade too. The Moroccan Chicken entree comes with a side salad and the saffron rice is buttery and fragrant. The Qouchbanes are a really nice couple who are friendly and care about the quality of their food. Probably the best lamb gyros in town, even though the price is higher; you get an almost double sized serving. We would go to this food cart more often but they are only open Thurs-Sat 6 PM-3AM! read more

I got the $5 for $10 deal on yelp, total cost me $6 for a lamb gyro and the Hebrew National($4 for basically a hot dog). Price was a steal, especially in the evening when everything is closed. Great customer service as well, had a great conversation with the cook. read more

I ordered a lamb gyro from Zaalook through Uber Eats. Not sure if they were lazy or not feeling it, but what I got was one piece of pita bread and a leg of lamb. Didn't get the extra hummus and naan that I ordered. Wouldn't recommend eating unless you're there to confirm you get what you ordered. read more

I decided to try a lamb / falafel combo gyro, light on the sriracha and a little extra tatziki. Just delicious!! The falafel had a nice crispy exterior and soft interior with good spicing (could that be lime zest?) The tatziki was creamy and garlicky. Fresh sliced onion, tomatoes and lettuce also added crunch. Very flavorful. Great -post evening of dancing- food! Friendly people too. read more

This guy charged us 2$ more per item than what is displayed on his price chart. Also charged extra 2.5$ on the bill as some processing fee.when asked about it he talks rudely. Felt cheated. Worst experience and spoiled my mood the entire day. If you want to eat food here, check the prices before you order. read more

Had this delivered via postmates to our home in North Portland, and we LOVED it! We had the falafel gyro, the hummus/grape leaves appetizer, and the lamb shank. All three dishes were delicious! This will definitely be a delivery go-to for us from here on out. read more

Yooommm. Popped by after reading Yelp reviews and seeing how close it was to our hotel. Nabbed two super lamb gyros with the hot sauce (sriracha?). It was exactly what I wanted. So delish. Not huge though -- we both probably could have/would have/wanted to eat more than just one. I didn't pay so I'm not sure how reasonable the pricing was. I just know I'm not usually a huge fan of lamb OR gyros and this one was really nice. read more

Most of the seating is backless Moroccan poufs (Americans may consider them footstools). There are no alternative options to sit more upright. It was really tough for my 76-year-old dad to be comfortable in his seat but we still had a blast. The server was extraordinary and very patient with us, not knowing anything. She guided us and we enjoyed the experience very much. Starting with a beautiful metal pot where she poured warm water over our hands to cleanse them, Moroccan beer and Moroccan wine, a cold eggplant salad, nice bread, and lentil soup to start, followed by a unique meat pastry. We ordered the chicken with preserved lemons and olives as well as marinated hare. Our dinner was followed with a dessert and lovely mint tea. The belly dancer was a nice surprise for us. I loved it, but would really make sure that you're comfortable sitting in extra low seating.
