Came here for a rainy Sunday lunch. Located in the Midtown Beer Garden - a closed off area with tons of food trucks. Ordered at the counter from a very friendly cashier. Picked up our sandwich in about 10 minutes. Plenty of covered community seating to eat our lunch. Miso Katsu Sando, Pork - Slightly toasted fluffy bread, katsu that was well fried, shredded cabbage. I thought each element was pretty good, but overall was hoping for more. Like more sauce/condiments to bring it all together. One of my friends that I was traveling with said they liked the regular (non-Miso) Pork Katsu Sando better, so if I'm ever in the area again, I'll need to check out that version. read more

I got the miso pork katsu sando. It's super filling; I ate it over two sittings. The milk bread is so soft and soaks up all the sauce. And they don't skimp on the katsu. I will just say that I found the sandwich to be on the sweeter side because of the sauce they use. read more

I came here for the first time and got the mango & cream sando, it was the last day for it so it's no longer available. The mango piece was sweet, thick and juicy, and the mango to cream ratio was perfect. My only complaint is the bread was a bit stale on the outside. It still had a fluffy texture inside but it was definitely starting to get stale. For $13.99, I wouldn't expect that. Although I assume from the many amazing reviews this place has that's not the norm. I'll have to come by again sometime. The lady at the window was very kind. read more

My first time here. Ordered the recommended Naka Sando. It was delicious. 10/10. Lots of flavor, chicken was cooked to perfection. I could have ate two of them. Price was a bit high, though, you can taste the quality in the food and you can tell they take pride in their craftsmanship when making the sandos. I will definitely be back to try the entire menu lol. It all looked good. I might try the curry Sando next time. The lady was very sweet, I'm assuming she was the owner. Came back two years later and they are still serving the most simple yet powerful sandwiches! Service is top notch and the owners seem to intentionally hone their craft and love what they do. HIGHLY RECOMMEND The miso katsu sando was heavenly. Honestly, better than some of the Sandos I had when I was in Japan. There's one lady running it and she makes each order fresh. It's a bit of a wait due to this but it's worth it. The lady is so sweet and you can tell she puts her love into every sando she gives. I'm lucky I got to try her food! It was delicious. Flavor (4/5): If you are also missing the sandos from Japan this spot gets you really close to those! The egg salad sando was fluffy and honestly inhaled in 3 bites. Their chicken katsu sando was saucy, if anything the cabbage and sauce made the chicken less crispy. We tried their chicken karage as well, not as battered and crispy as I'm used to but their yuzu sauce was very interesting! Instagram Worthy (4/5): For a food truck, it's so cute. The sandwiches come out ready for pictures. If anything their chicken karage felt more like an after thought. I wasn't sure what to expect with this place but I was quite happy with it! I got the Miso pork katsu sando. The miso sauce had good flavor and the garlic added a nice touch. I wish the pork wasn't fried as long but it wasn't bad. The sandwich is a bit small for the price but it's definitely worth a try. There was also a long line but the food came quick and the workers were lovely and so helpful. Since it's a food cart it's in a cute food cart pod with lots of options. Theres a decent amount of seating and overall it's a fun place to hang out and try different things. read more

Tokyo Sando is situated in a cute little food truck park with a covered picnic table courtyard in the center. A bit of a wait for my sandos but WORTH IT. The egg sando was a new take on classic egg salad but it was perfection with the softest bread and the freshest eggs. The lady running Tokyo Sando was so kind. The thick fluffy soft bread with little to no crust reminded me so much of sandwiches in Japan. I got the Miso Pork Katsu Sando to try as pork is always going to be favored for Katsu and it sure didn't disappoint. The pork Katsu was huge. Unfortunately the egg Sando was sold out when I visited but next time I'm in Portland, I'm definitely returning to try it. There's a lot of seating in the center of the lot that Tokyo Sando is in along with neighboring food businesses. Parking might be a little difficult depending when you go, but a little walk is nothing when the reward is a good ole Japanese sando. read more

Their sandos reminded me of my previous Japan trip. It was so delicious, juicy, light and i finished in 5 minutes. Service was quick and convenient. You ordered at the counter and they let you know when it is ready for pick up. They have plenty of tables and seats. Restroom available for the customers. Visited Tokyo Sando for the first time during a trip to Portland with friends. I'll admit, I haven't explored Portland's food truck scene nearly as much as I should have on prior visits, so Tokyo Sando wasn't on my radar - and tbh, it's easy to walk right past since the exterior is casual and unassuming. Luckily I was with a group of foodies who did know about it and were eager to go, and I'm so glad we did! It ended up being one of - if not THE - best sandwiches we had in Portland. Three of us shared two sandwiches (the gyoza scotch egg and the pork katsu) and also sampled the egg salad from another friend. Everything was delicious, but the unanimous favorite was the gyoza scotch egg - such a clever and tasty twist. I don't make it to Portland often, but Tokyo Sando is now officially on my "must return" list for future visits. read more

I finally tried the scotch egg sando! It was impressive and exceeded expectations! The combination of flavors is superb, but it's not very easy to eat. You will need some napkins - which I had to ask for. It's not cheap at $16.99. This truck is now in the Midtown Beer Garden. It's not always open. They sell out of good items often. The curry egg sando seems to still say coming soon, even when I get there early. read more

Loved my chicken sando from Tokyo Sando! I was passing through Portland and wanted to pick up a quick lunch to go from Tokyo Sando. Ordering in advance was easy. I went through their website and placed my order at 12:20, and it was ready for me 40 minutes later. I reached the actual stand 15 minutes later and was able to easily pick up my order. Note that Tokyo Sando is part of the Midtown Beer Garden in downtown Portland, and even on a Monday afternoon, parking was hard to find. Luckily we were just picking up, so my friend waited for me in the car while I ran out and grabbed the food. The Midtown Beer Garden had a really cute vibe, with music playing and at least 20+ different restaurants serving food with plenty of outdoor seating. I wish we could have eaten here as it was such a nice spot. We ended up pulling over at a rest area and eating there, which was also fine. I ordered the miso chicken katsu sando ($15.99) for myself and the Naka sando ($15.99) for my friend. Even though we ate ~30 min after picking up the sandos, both were still crispy and delicious. The miso chicken katsu sando is on the sweeter side, which was perfect for me, while the Naka sando is more savory. Portions are also very big, especially for the chicken katsu sando which comes with two pieces of chicken. We actually ended up only eating half a sando for lunch and ate the other half for dinner, and that was more than enough food for the two of us. Would highly recommend Tokyo Sando to anyone living in or passing through Portland! read more

Service (4/5): Service is a bit slow as there was only one person working but they were friendly and helpful. It took about 10ish min for us to get the food from starting to line up. Regardless the server had a really good attitude and friendliness. Ambiance (5/5): Inside a beautiful Biergarten with tons of food courts, lively music, and tons of seating. Tokyo Sando has to be my favorite food truck period. It's a food truck, so ambiance is what the weather is, but it's in a great food truck area in downtown, close to all the major attractions. The staff has always been super nice! The sandwiches are insane. Any time I come to Portland I make sure I stop in for a Sando. From the Katsu Sando to the Tamago Sando, to anything in-between, it's always fresh, crunchy, well flavored, just all around fantastic! This is the type of food truck I'd happily give a Micheline star to if I had the power. Until my next visit! read more

The scotch egg sando had a flavorful, well seasoned gyoza surrounding a medium soft egg. Sauce and black garlic both added rich flavor without being overpowering. Light and balanced bread and veggie to round things out. The miso/pork chicken katsu have a perfectly crunchy breading and are both soft on the inside. Get there early is all I can say. We thought we were getting there early enough, but we were mistaken. We really wanted to try the egg salad sando but they had sold out long before we got there. We ended up only being able to get the chicken naka sando, and the chicken katsu sando. These sando's are huge, stuffed with lots of chicken and toppings. It was kind of hard to eat, and I could have done with less chicken. The double layer is a bit much for me and those in my group. Definitely something that needs to be eaten fresh because it does not taste the same after and bread gets soggy. read more

super delicious as always! this place is definitely in my list of top portland restaurants. i love the portion of meat contrasted against the fresh shredded cabbage. the employee at the window is always super kind and energetic. her positive attitude really levels up the experience. if you're worried about eating here during the colder seasons, there are tents and space heaters, which help make it more comfortable to eat outside. my only complaint is that they always run out of the egg sandwiches early on. i've been dying to try the egg curry sandwich but it is never in stock. i still really love this place though and will continue to come back again and again read more

This place is worth it! Both the price and the bustling food cart park where you may have to compete for seating if it's busy. They were out of the Egg Lover (sad face) when we stopped by so I opted for the Naka, and I wasn't disappointed. The texture of the katsu chicken was awesome and crispy, and the mayo and slaw complemented it nicely. The scotch egg sando was amazing, too. One of the best things I ate in Portland. We randomly stopped by the bier garten and we instantly knew we wanted sandos. They make everything fresh to order and it took about 15 minutes to get my food. I got the Miso Chicken Katsu Sando. The portion was huge and filling enough to feed me and my friend. These are large sandwiches so sharing is caring, or eat the whole thing by yourself - live your life. They included ketchup for the fries as well as malt vinegar and tartar sauce for authentic fish dip. Wedge of lemon, too! All in a earth-friendly cardboard box. They take credit just fine. Very convenient location at Carts on Foster just down the street from where I was staying. So I walked back and enjoyed there. If you're staying you could probably cruise over to any local breweries or the bar cart for a beer to complement the fried food. Good time!!!

Tried Tokyo Sando for the first time today, ordered the Miso Pork Katsu Sando and it immediately became one of my favorite things I've ever eaten. The pork was cooked perfectly with great crunch on the outside but tender inside. The miso was a great Mia of sweet and savory, and the black garlic furikake balanced that with a slight bitterness. And soft bread, of course. Just perfect. My husband and I split the sandwich for lunch and it was enough to feel satisfied, though I certainly would have gladly eaten a full one. I'm a big fan of katsu, and I've been lucky enough to eat it in Japan -- I've only been once, I'm definitely no authority but it just tasted so much like what I remember eating there. Can't wait to go back and try some of their other sandwiches. I didn't bother taking a picture, too excited to eat it, but their pictures are accurate :) Oh and online ordering was quick and easy! Maybe I'm not looking in the right places but I feel like there's not a lot of places for actual Japanese food (outside of sushi and ramen) in the NW, so I'm so excited this place is here -- thanks for bringing a little piece of Japan to Portland! read more
