If you asked me if I would go back, I would say no xiexie. Why? Well, first of all, customer service doesn't exist here. You would expect a peaceful and calm environment when getting a massage. But no, the workers talk too loud and too often. They spent more time talking than doing their job. They talk so much that I became fluent in their language. My friends asked them if they could massage gentler but instead they were being laughed at by the workers in their native language. Lee is an amazing and a top notch massage professional who cares about her customers. You can tell her smile is real! The issue was one day I came in, Lee wasn't around and they gave me someone else. The person provided half spirited massage - it was obvious and was not thorough at all. Very quick on each point and jumping from leg area to arm area etc.. My partner tried once, unfortunately Lee wasn't around so someone else took him in. He booked for 60 mins but they went for 90 mins without even asking while he was completely unaware which resulted him being late for a dinner arrangement. He was charged for 90 mins. Love this place. I have chronic shoulder knots (thanks desk & stress!) and go regularly. Once I could barely lift my arm or bend my neck and after 90 mins I was a good 75% better, the next day 95%. Best at what they do. Would never go anywhere else for a massage. Make sure to specify if you'd like a deep tissue massage or not. They do both very well. Good massage, but they made me feel cheated. Massage itself is not bad for the price. However they made me put my face on a kitchen towel (which gave me bumps all over my face). The payment system is very sketchy - front desk lady demanded a 20% minimum tip as is it was the law and overcharging me by $4 when I used a credit card (if i had known i would have brought cash.) felt cheated. Selina the owner gave me my massage and as other people have mentioned it was one of, if not the best massage I've ever gotten. This place is a gem, lots of pressure just where I needed it, and I do need A LOT of pressure in my massages, at other places I always pay for deep tissue and it's not even close to the massage here. Lots of stretching and for the price it can't be beat. It is a very short walk from the beekman hotel where I like to stay when in NY and I come back frequently. I came across 88 Spa through a yelp search of massage spots in the area and chose it due to how close it was to my office, how great the reviews were AND the fact that they take walk-ins. I definitely agree with the "no frills" sentiment but sometimes that is just overcompensating for a mediocre experience anyway. For what 88 Spa lacks in foofiness, they more than make up for in service. I have nothing but AMAZING things to say about my experience with Selina who I believe is the owner. She really took the time to work on and stretch the areas of my back that were super tight. She gives a very firm deep tissue massage that hurts like heck but in the good way!!! She was checking in with me a bunch to make sure I was ok and adjusting the pressure. After my visit, I floated out of there with my complimentary cup of green tea! Great massage! Rooms are bright and clean and the massage was perfect. I like a good strong (often painful pressure) massage and I was very satisfied! Been going to 88 Spa for the past 3-years. Pay my 1-hour fee and then leave a $20 tip. Today, after I got dressed, I was unable to find my shoes and socks. I had to walk barefoot to front desk and then was told that they would not give me my shoes back until I repaid them for the plant. Plant was not even in the room and if so, was moved out of the room. I had no idea that I even broke a stem to a plant and don't recall doing so. Selina the owner then showed me a receipt and said I have to buy her plant. I was puzzled and confused. So I leave the usual fee and a $20 tip. This was still not good enough. She wanted $13 for the flowers. To avoid an argument I just paid the $13 and left the plant there. They just lost a loyal customer over stupidity. A damn plant. Extremely unprofessional. I called to make an appointment for 2pm. I arrived 15 minutes early, expecting to wait until my scheduled appointment at 2, only to be told that I would need to come back at a later time because they had booked someone else. When I told the lady that I had made an appointment and that it was extremely unprofessional to have me show up only to tell me that they need me to come back at a later time, she claimed that she had called me previously to cancel. When I checked my phone, I saw that she did indeed call, five minutes before I had arrived while I was in the subway over to their location. So effectively, they cancelled my appointment 20 minutes before it was scheduled. People are busy in this city and don't have time to traipse down to the financial district in the middle of the day only to be told their appointment has been cancelled. Amazing massage... Selina is incredible. One time I just walked in and hit a "massage jackpot" Suffering from chronic upperback, shoulder and neck pain because of long distance driving, stress, etc. went to physical therapy for 3 months-got 10% improvement. Got 3 sessions of massage from Selina-90% better. I can't believe the difference! She finds problem areas, connects the dots, then works with the source and fixes the issue! One time I was complaining about pain around my shoulderblade; after careful examination, Selina started to massage muscles around my jawline which surprised me at first, but then I immidietly felt the pain shooting directly to the problem spot in my back. After working on muscles connecting the jawline, neck and a shoulder for 30 min, pain went away.. I couldn't believe it! She is not just giving a relaxing massage, she is truly trying to fix a problem by understanding where the pain is coming from and working with spots that cause it in the first place. That's how Selina is different from any other massage therapist I've been to. I live in Queens and drive downtown to get massage from her once/week, for me, Selina is worth 2 hour commute.
