The location has been under several different names over the years, and right now it's the 89th Street Collective. Luckily it is still a live music venue. I've been to several shows there and I really like how the stage is now. The sound and lighting are pretty good. Ticket prices are generally fair and the bar prices are about average for OKC. I believe they are a beer only place. Parking is the same as all ways. For bigger shows get there early for the best parking. The only thing that bothers me is the limited setting. Outside of the merch tables to only seating is in the bar area. It would nice to have a few tables and chairs again. read more

This was the first time I've been to this building since it was redone and became 89th Street. Many moons ago this was the original green door in which I saw many bands at. When the green door moved down to brick town this was changed into the conservatory in which I still attended a few shows at. The venue is ALOT more cleaned up since those days and the stage has been redone. It still has a bit of the grimey dive bar feeling though. My only wish is that more bands I want to see came through. They do have a ton of bands through though. Tonight it is Amigo The Devil. So excited. read more

I don't go to too many live shows. There's something about being jammed next to a bunch of people that I don't know that doesn't really appeal to me. I'm also not the most energetic person, so whenever everyone else is "jamming out" and "throwing down", I'm usually just standing still, bobbing my head thinking, "this is a nice song". I feel like I've always been an old soul, but I've started to feel that more over the past few years. So now, I'll only go to see a show if it's a band that I really to see live. I say all of this because one of those bands were in Oklahoma last week and they played at 89th Street Collective. The first thing to note is that parking is awful. Absolutely terrible. Not only is there no indication of where to park (at the time of writing the review there was construction surrounding the entire venue) but there is barely anything paved nearby. The nearest parking lot had so many potholes, we had to be extra careful not to bottom out. It's also not in the best part of town, so keep that in mind. The actual venue is pretty small. I think the maximum occupancy was ~200 people, so if there's a show that you're really wanting to see, you might consider getting tickets early in case they sell out. Everything that was played sounded great. Throughout the show, we could feel the bass punching us in the gut and chest. Whoever the sound guy was, he did a great job. The show we saw had trombone, trumpet, violin, cello, and all the other regular instruments. We were able to hear all the solos and all the vocals were clear and didn't sound muddy. It was, however, stupidly hot inside. Obviously, a concert with a whole bunch of people is going to be hot, but this was like a muggy, gross, stale heat. It looked like the AC unit above the stage wasn't working properly and was leaking on top of the bands that were playing. Also, I decided not to wear comfortable shoes, so my feet and back were hurting by the end of the night. I know that 89th Street Collective has nothing to do with that, I'm just complaining now. All things considered, if I were wanting to go to a random show, I probably wouldn't go back to 89th Street Collective. I feel like there are too many things working against it rather than for it. If it's a band that you like and want to support, go for it. Just wear comfortable shoes and expect some muggy, gross, stale heat. read more

Gravel parking lot. Murals on the outside walls. Barely (or non) functioning air conditioner. Good beer selection. Horrid bathrooms. Sounds like a typical 'punk' venue to me. It is. I've played here once and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't the most fun I've had playing in OKC. The sound wasn't bad, we were treated fairly by staff/ownership, and the place was packed with people looking for a good show. There's nothing fancy about this place... Or clean, really. It seems to sit somewhere between abandon and repair. Studs in the walls are exposed. And those cinderblocks... You'll see what I'm talking about. This is one of those gems, a bastion, of punk rock's refusal to die. Places like this only exist because of the magic that happens inside. You will sweat. You will drink. I swayed between 4 or 5 stars, but had to not let my love for the place cloud my review. However, I am a fan of the Conservatory. First, the place is rundown... The bathrooms are sometimes functional. The seats have exposed springs. The floor has probably never been swept or mopped. And...it has that weird, old garage smell. With all of that being said, I've still seen of my favorite bands stop off here for a show. I don't know why they decide that the Conservatory is the spot they'd like to jam at, but if they're going to stop there...then obviously the Conservatory is doing something right, right? The Conservatory serves cheap beer and good times. Oh, and they host some awesome bands. What more could I ask for from a venue? I don't care about the aesthetics of a place when all I'm there for is to listen to some of my favorite bands do what they do best. read more

Sound guy was terrible - couldn't hear vocals and he stared at his phone or was absent completely during the entire show. When the headliner act called him out he got attitude. Whoever runs their social media is just as bad, being defensive about their awful sound guy and blaming the headliner for not doing a sound check. First and last time I'll be going there. read more

To be frank, this place is filthy, parking's a beotch, and it becomes sweltering pretty fast. That said, you can't beat the price for how close you are to the musicians! I recently attending the Anberlin show with my boyfriend. It's not ideal for acoustic quality, nor for needing to use the restroom - you're better off wearing depends to the show! But beer prices are cheap, folks in the audience are typically devout fans, and it's surprisingly really close to good pre-show dining options, such as Republic. If you go to live music bars for booze and bathrooms with scented handsoaps then the conservatory is not the place for you. If you go to a live music venue .... I don't know ... for LIVE MUSIC then the conservatory is great for that. Let's see DINOSAUR Jr., MAPS & ATLASES, The XX and my local favorite Glow God are just a sampling of wonderful bands I've heard playing here. I worry that if the conservatory closed it's doors no one in OKC would be left to take their place. I'd have to drive to the Opolis for all the shows I like, okay maybe the blue note on occasion but they just don't have the same love, passion - years of built up dust and dirt that this venue has - no one ever will. So here is my short love letter the conservatory for being host to many under-the-radar style bands, talented local indie rock groups and for being unapologetic about their appearance. (side note: it is actually no smoking by the way) Overall I love it, for what it is, a grungy live music club. read more

Formerly the Conservatory. Parking lot is in poor condition and seems to have a lot of underage kids just hanging out in it. Door fee on a Friday night was $14, rather high for what you get. Inside has no seating of any kind. Building was clean the night I went, but rather run down. The positive... They have all different kinds of local acts trying show their talent. Rock, Rap, & Digital DJ types. They get 20 minutes to showcase what they have. The theme, feel & idea of what they seem to be trying to do is why I give it two stars. Yes this place is a dive. They serve all those old cheap beers that you don't see much anymore like Old Style and PBR. I went for Locals Night Only No 4. The order of the bands that played was way out of whack because the worst band played last, the second best band played first. I thought the comedy acts in between music acts was a cool idea, but the comedians I heard were horrible and not funny at all unless you like penis talk. Don't know who the owner is and didn't see anyone get molested. Got c-blocked by some JA while talking to a cute pastry chef. Maybe that was the owner! Two of the bands I watched were the pits and I never would have let them play if it was my place. The other two were pretty good. The sound guy doesn't have a clue, I couldn't hear any of the vocals all night. There is room for improvement here. How about pouring some mortar in those cinder blocks? I mean this out of love for the place, but the conservatory is a terrible place for shows. The acoustics are better in my living room - but seriously, it's a concrete building the size of a small house with a decent sized stage and some plywood doors. This place has seen better days. But that's part of the charm of the Conservatory. It's a piece of crap, but you get to feel like you're going to some hole in the wall secret show to see your favorite grunge band. I wish there was a place in OKC to replace the conservatory. I think the only reason the blue note hasn't replaced the conservatory for shows is because it's 21 to enter. It's hard to maintain an all ages venue and still serve alcohol. So I hand it to them for sticking it out. And I'll still go because I will always want to go see my favorite small time bands, and big venues just aren't as much fun. HOWEVER if I have the option of the conservatory, or anywhere in Tulsa, I'm making the hour and a half drive. Hands down. read more

Absolutely amazing venue!!! Show was sold out, spacious dressing room, variety of drugs and alcohol, very sanitary bathroom with jacuzzi and health spa! The main attraction was the dimly lit parking lot! Almost everyone on the tour had ample space to get cranked off in the woods by an average female show goer without police interruptions! The Conservatory is a good little rock venue for OKC. It reminds me a bit of Emo's in Austin if you have ever been to Austin. The first show I saw here was a band called Tweak Bird. The cool part about The Conservatory is that it is so small in size you can really mingle with the bands. They seem to do a decent job of booking fairly good bands here. This place is def a dive bar, so don't expect glam which is really more my style anyway so I like it. read more

Lots of updates and hard work put into the building. Took the place from a dump to a respectable venue! Great staff and sound.

I only lived in OKC for about 18 months, but in that time I saw a handful of shows here. Some good (Hudson Falcons, Red City Radio), some not so good (boring instrumental indie rock). And while the sound may not be the best all the time (this can be the band's fault as much as the guy running the soundboard) its still a good, dirty punk venue and lives up to that status. Since it is right next to Size Records and the owners kind of co-op both places when the other is unavailable, Size stays open late on nights when the Conservatory has shows. The men's bathroom has to be one of the worst travesties in the state, though. read more

It's hard to be mad at The Conservatory, I've seen some of the most memorable shows there. When Atmosphere and Brother Ali played a few years ago, the sound went out and Brother Ali did the whole set a-capella. Luckily, we knew every word to every song so we loved it. I bet it wasn't so good for him. Then there was the show where the girl threw up on me in the bathroom and the one where I emceed and it was 117 degrees in there and I almost passed out on stage. So, I guess it would be good if they swept and got AC and took care of bands better but then we wouldn't be able to bitch and moan and shell out our 5 bucks anyway. This is by far my favorite club to play in all of Oklahoma. Hands down. There isn't a favorite show I've ever played that hasn't been here. The kids are always happy to be there, the drinks are always cheap, and the sound guy is always helpful. This place is the cornerstone of local music in Oklahoma right now, definitely a need-to-see for lovers of all genres. read more

As someone who has been going to shows for over 10 years, I will say a good portion of those shows were at this venue, I drank underage in vans behind this place, met tons of cool people, made some of my best friends, and have a lot of memories here from when it was the green door as well as after it became the conservatory. It's a great venue, with a great owner and a great vibe..everytime i go to a show here i feel 15 again..it's not prissy, it's a dive bar and it always has been but the white stripes played here,the blood brothers,band of horses,weakerthans blah blah blah and like a billion other bands that are amazing...its a place to play in oklahoma that everyone knows about, and im sad it has such a low rating. read more

I usually go here alot but two days ago i went to a concert and got jumped by 6 or 7 people and security did not help me in any way and one security actually hit me in the face when they made me leave because THEY did they not see what haaappened and i go there all the time and never thought something like that would happen. read more

As an Oklahoma City local, I can honestly say that the Conservatory is one of the best places to hear live music in the entire state. Not only is the staff fantastic and ALWAYS willing to give recommendations as to new music (never the radio-pop shit) to check out, but the drinks are cheap and the sound is great! While the store IS undergoing changes, it's pretty difficult to shut down the entire store for months at a time when the locals demand good music every week! Not to mention, I don't check out venues to see how much "dust" buildup there is... The venue is constantly being upgraded thanks to locals like US who are there for the music rather than the aesthetic. Just to mention a few of the BAD ASS bands I have been given an opportunity to see live (and in Oklahoma, that's saying a lot...): Sleepy Sun (now touring with Deerhoof , who has also played here, but we saw them WAY before word got out on their amazing sound) , The Budos Band (coming in August), Nico Vega, and on and on and on and on. listen, if you're a yuppie, you're not going to want to go here. if you dig local music, and good number of great musicians from oklahoma city and abroad come here. i'm still surprised to see the amazing talent that comes to this venue and fills up the entire place. beer selection is awesome, it's cheap, and they don't sell any bud light or any of that crap. the art on the outside of the building is awesome, and the renovation really has maximized the space within the joint. after the bands finish you can always bet they're going to be outside the place chain smoking with other fans, it's cool they have the outside lighting so it's safe to chill out there with your friends. read more

Intimate venue that brings in good bands. I have always loved coming to this place throughout the years and throughout the name changes.

There is no denying that this place is pretty much a shit hole, but they get the occasional good bands from around the country and a bunch of good locals. Their bar is very reasonably priced, $2.50 for a 16 oz PBR. Can't hardly beat that! Fun place though and usually brings a good crowd without being too crowded, if you know what I mean? read more

The Silent Giants Tour w/I.L.A.M. was booked here by an outside promoter. The parking lot wasn't very accommodating at all. Not many options. The staff was very quite, had a one word answer for any questions. Were more focused on their phones most of the time. This venue could be something amazing however. It's wide open and taken better care of could be a very legendary establishment. Just not sure anyone cares that much and that's unfortunate. The sound was decent...bathrooms a little weird and drinks cheap but the bar looked depressing...nothing really on the shelves to see what they have to offer. read more

If you like alternative bands this is the place to go, It reminds me of what Deep Ellum was in the 80's and early 90's before it became mainstream. The conservatory is the backbone of the OKC alternative music scene. Every local live act worth anything plays here and most touring Indie acts from Mc Chris, Nashville Pussy, to J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. have graced the stage. The people behind this venue have been supporting alt culture in Okc since the 80's. The murals on the side of the building are incredible and rival the graff found in NY subways. The barstaff are very friendly, drinks are cheap with a good selection and the soundsystem is great. read more

Contrary to what John C. said in his review, the Conservatory IS an awesome place to see bands, both old and new. I've seen several old punk bands play there such as D.R.I, MDC. I've also seen some of my absolute favorites there such as Lower Class Brats, Krum Bums, Violent Affair (check em out, they're comin up!), the Rippers, and much more!! It's a rockin place filled with people who just want to have a good time and listen to rad music. I've never had a bad experience at the Conservatory and I think that alone should tell you it's worth your time. The owners are awesome. Even their security guys are nice dudes unless you act like an idiot. Come check it out despite what the losers say. read more

Yeah it's a dive. Yeah the sound sucks. Yeah the general concertgoer here is a prick. Yeah the bathrooms are filthy. If you're waiting for my counterargument for the good, well it ain't comin'. The Conservatory sucks, everybody knows it, but there's not a whole lot of other options, so we tolerate it. There's far better venues in Norman that operate locally, but they don't tend to attract the same tier of bands. Which is why The Conservatory gets two stars, they occasionally have some prime bands playing here. Too bad you can't tell what song they're playing. read more

When i rolled over the star rating I saw that 5 stars is "As good as it gets!" I think that adequately describes this venue. I love live music. I've been working with bands for over 20 years and it is not a glamorous endeavor. You start as a fan of live music and it means everything to you... 5 to 10 years later that charm has worn off. I worked the door at The Conservatory for 6+ years. It is the pits to deal with people. We have made several attempts to renovate the restrooms but people vandalize everything. We built and rebuilt the men's stall several times but some 'bro' passed out on it drunk and took the stall down and the toilet off the seal in the floor. I've seen this trend at many many venues across the coutry... Emo's piss trough only had half a door on the outside. Trees used to have an open toilet next to the door that faced the bar. Haley's in Deton had immaculate, modern bathrooms when they opened... no stall doors a year later... no stalls a few years later... blow dryers and paper towel dispensers destroyed. Venues don't make the kind of money you think and we can suffer substantial losses on shows. If you want to know why movies cost more, sporting events cost more, night clubs/venues cost more, it's because people are pigs and can't clean up after themselves. extra security and janitorial staff is making the price of everything increase because people need sitters. Oh, it's their job and they're getting paid for it... is that what you think? Don't count on it. The Conservatory, like many venues across the U.S., is independently run as a labor of love. This place was rough to say the least. I have traveled with the independent music scene all over the country (and the world) visiting some really cool little hole in the walls, dives, dumps, trash heaps, places over their prime, and places that just do not get it. 89th SC has to be by far one of the worst venues I have attempted to catch a local show at in a long time. It is right down there with a little hole that I found myself in in Vietnam minus the blatant drug use in the joint. In this case it was in the back parking lot. I can handle a poorly run venue in a building that is falling apart, however, I do not appreciate a staff that is more worried about impressing their friends and picking up girls over the safety of their patrons. When I walked out to my car in the venue's back parking lot to take a phone call, there were a group of mixed underage and of aged girls (you could tell based on some had the 21+ wrist bands, some did not) who where trashed out of their minds. Besides drinking, whatever everyone does it at an event like this, they were self per-claimed 'getting their hits and loading up before going back in' and proudly going on about it, again sometimes comes with the territory at places like this. What took it over the edge was then they started to pop squats on the side of people's cars in the lot because it was funny. The entire time the guy from the venue wearing the security t-shirt was standing near by chatting up the girl he was trying to take home. All in all, the lack of professionalism of this venue is the worse I have ever seen in this part of the county! If you are looking for a good night and a cheap hit, try their back parking lot on nights when the house is packed because the staff won't care. You will not find me trying to find undiscovered talent at this place anytime soon! read more

I have a love/hate relationship with The Conservatory. In reality, more of a like/hate relationship as there's not much to love here. If you are playing the Conservatory you are either on the way up or the way down and neither the 'twain shall meet. Without The Conservatory there would be yet one less venue in Oklahoma's already almost nonexistent live music scene. This is about as spartan as one can get. I've seen some great shows here over the years so for that alone I will give it three stars. I really started to hate this place when I saw Local H here earlier this year. Band leader Scott Lucas had to come out and argue with whomever was at the bar regarding their sound, and there were also scant few folks here to catch this show. But, the argument was solved, and Local H's great two piece unit rocked the small crowd, although the poor turnout and venue definitely made their attitude poorer. And, I must too also comment on the recurring theme of the restrooms. Absolutely disgusting! I've used better facilities at dive bars in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico! This is the one place where I could believe that old urban legend about getting (and how should I put this delicately?) public lice (ok, I'll just say it, crabs) from a public toilet! So, ladies and gents if you ever need an excuse just tell 'em you were at the Conservatory and all doubts will be erased. And you just might see a good show too. read more

This place is a complete shit hole but they actually got Trampled by Turltes to stop by which totally kicked ass. The one thing that is actually good about this place is that you can get close to the bands. The stage lighting was terrible...two bright ass red lights that were shinning right in the bands face. Hell, the mandolin player was on the side of the stage playing in the dark...they could show a little more respect when talented musicians stop by and play! Lucky for me this is the type of venue that Trampled by Turtles likes to play in...and the fact they aren't too good to play in a crappy bar. All in all kick ass show and I'd see them again for sure... anywhere for that matter. Adjust the lighting I'd like to see all of the band next time... haha. read more
