Don't get a shave here. I feared for my life! I went to 968 The Shop recently to have my hair line fixed up and get a nice straight razor shave. I've had friends who went here before and said the haircuts were good. While I can't comment on the cuts, I will say that my shave was one of the worst in my life. The barbers towel work was fine and relaxing, but when it came down to the shave, I could tell he wasn't confident in his blade skills and he didn't know how to properly stretch the skin to get a clean cut. The worst issue was that his hands quivered uncontrollably. Tell me, would you trust someone with quivering hands to shave your neck with an extremely sharp blade? After about half an hour of him attempting to shave my face I could tell me skin was getting raw and dry. He had to lather me up a second time and still couldn't give me a smooth shave so he had to use the electric shaver to "finish the job". My skin is still really raw the next day and I don't think I would recommend anyone to get a shave here. Honestly, I hate leaving bad reviews, but when it comes to fearing that someone may slice my or someone else's neck open because of a lack of blade control I have to warn people. read more

Will is my favorite and I've been lucky to get him for the past two haircuts. He's really attentive to detail and makes even the smallest changes that make a huge difference. I have Asian hair, which the sides and back act like a porcupine.... So if a patch is longer than the rest, it sticks out like a sore thumb. NEVER had that happen and Will is really easy to talk to. He's very knowledgeable about the different hair styles so he can most definitely make your dream hair into a reality. I'm pretty picky when it comes to barbers but this place was great. The guys were really funny, friendly and down to earth. The haircut did take a long time, but for good reason. I actually like how my haircut came out, but the barber looked at me like I had two heads when I asked for a side part (simple, classic haircut). He retorted: "you don't want a fade or nothin?" . I felt pretty uncomfortable for the majority of the cut, as the barbers just yelled across the room about how cool Gronk is. I think they do good work, but there is a clique-type thing going on there between their loyal customers and employees. Kind of a "bro's only" type thing, making you feel like a burden, as opposed to a custom r. I would head somewhere else if you don't wear Ed Hardy and rock fades. read more

My first time was about 6 weeks ago. The first time I went, I got Holli and naturally I asked for her again last Saturday. As usual she did not disappoint. I showed her a photo of what I wanted and she knew exactly how to do it. I live just around the corner from 968 The Shop and I've been seeing their sign for a few months. I decided to stop in and give them a try and I really enjoy them. Larry is very good at haircuts, an excellent conversationalist, and the new interior is friendly (I never saw the old one though). They're definitely a local hangout place. There are almost always people hanging out waiting for haircuts, and they're a good bunch of guys. They're all friendly and most of them have the Baaaaawston drawl. Lots of them have been going to Larry and his father (also Larry) for years and years. I've definitely decided to switch over to them for most of my haircuts, and specifically this review is for Larry's last haircut for me, which was for a family wedding. Just came back from a walk-in on a Friday afternoon. Dude asks if I called ahead, what kind of cut I'm getting, and gets me in the chair. Then asks if I'm paying with card or cash (cash) and tells me I should buzz it instead. Not my style but thanks anyway. 5 minutes later his 3 o'clock walks in. Ok, I see how it is. Pushing me to get a buzz cut so you can make a quick 20 bucks under the table and then rushing through a cut you didn't have time for? Yeah, fuck you too bro. I'm not usually compelled to write reviews but in this case, I've got to make an exception. This is the best barbershop I've been to and believe me, I've been to them all. The barbers here are all friendly and try to accommodate their clients to the best of their ability, regardless of age or background. I get my haircut from Tim who always goes above and beyond to ensure his clients get exactly what they want and have a great time in the process, and all of the barbers here are masters in their own craft. Furthermore, none of the barbers here wear Ed Hardy, just to be clear (as posted by a seemingly unsatisfied customer.) As far back as I can remember that I have been responsible for when, where and how to get my hair cut I have come to one thing, that at least for me has always been true. There are two kinds of Barber Shops, and its as easy as need and want. For a second, think back about your last cut and where you went. Did you think/say I need to go to (insert name here) and get a cut or did you say I want to go to (insert name here) and get a cut. 968 is defiantly a want. It has taken me over ten years living in Somerville but I have found a shop that is fresh, clean, everything a shop should be. Its a place to relax, to talk, to listen, laugh or hang out waiting for or after you get your cut. Its as good or even better than some of the other premium shops in Somerville but without the thickness that hangs in the air left by people doing everything they can to live an "Ironic" lifestyle . If its your first time stopping into see the guys at 968 and if hes available try to get Will. He will listen to what you want or give you great advice on your cut. Looks like they offer a straight razor shave but I didn't take advantage of that service as of yet but will plan to do so in the future. They take walk-in but calling ahead when you can isn't the worst idea. read more

I am admittedly particular about my 3.5 year old son's hair, so I was looking for a cool place with younger, but well-experienced, good stylists who could give my kid a hip cut after we moved away from our old place. 968 The Shop is definitely it. The atmosphere was fun but not too much for a kid to be around, we got right into the chair at appointment time (recommend an appointment if taking a child - there was a long wait by the time we left!), and Paul, who cut my son's hair, was awesome. Not only was Paul great with my son and incredibly nice to talk to, the haircut is SO good - Paul was thorough and careful and gave my son the exact haircut I described. I'll be bringing my son here for all of his future haircuts and hope to convince my husband to go there too! read more

I've been very busy lately, and had no time for a haircut. Today is Sunday, and earlier in the day, I decided to find an open barber shop in Somerville no matter what. After driving by shop after shop, all closed, I noticed an "Open" sign on this shop, so I went in to try my luck. And boy, I was really lucky to encounter a fine young barber, CJ, who was just finishing up with a customer. I was very happy with my haircut, and I liked all those "old-fashioned" barber shop smells - from the brush, cologne, and even a little razor shave on the back of my neck!
