A barber named Kemet took 1.5 hours to give me the worst haircut of my life. He nicked the back of my head with his razor, gave me a bald spot on my cowlick, and a completely uneven taper. He was very rude and honestly seemed high out of his mind to be quite honest. He also was making a lot of rude comments about cutting 'women's hair' (i am queer and have had a standard men's cut for the last 10 years, nothing crazy. Dente's looks, smells, and feels like the barber shops I used to visit as a kid. Being founded in 1913 and continuously operating in the Davis Square neighborhood, it has been a member of the community for over 100 years. Oddly, things haven't appeared to really change... which isn't necessarily a bad thing. In a world where the faster you can get things done is viewed as the best way, life moves a little slower inside the walls of Dente's. Things are as they have always been, with attention to detail being prioritized and conversation a cornerstone of the experience. CJ took excellent care of me, staying after close (I arrived at 1pm, when they closed) to make sure I was taken care of and happy with my cut. We had pleasant conversation throughout my visit and I felt as though I had been going here for years. There are small touches throughout the experience that are just skipped at other establishments that made it feel just... more luxurious... like straight razoring the neck and hairlines, talc powdering, and actual aftershave being applied. I will say that while Dente's is a little more expensive than typical places, it is well worth the price paid for the reasons I stated above. On top of that, it supports the local small business owners and the great employees that work there as well. I'll definitely be returning, as I live right in the area but it was the first time I have been here. If you want a little bit of nostalgia and to take things a little slower than they seem to go these days, drop in and see the good people at Dente's. UPDATED REVIEW: I've been coming to this barbershop since 2008, when I started college in Boston. Not only are the barbers talented in their own right, but they work with you to find a cut that makes you feel confident. Since I started going 15 years ago, I've moved 5 times all around Boston. I never once tried to find a more convenient barber, because when you've found the best, why would you settle? Visited for the first time and randomly picked CJ as my barber - he was great; asked really good questions and gave me some advice I had never heard before on how to deal w/ my beard. Very clearly he was paying attention to detail & took his time (but not too much time) to get it right - this wasn't a "get him in and out of the chair as fast as possible" situation. And yes, the haircut and beard trim were top notch and got me many compliments. Generally a great conversation with CJ, but it was also fun to hear the banter among the barbers. Despite the ribbing - these guys quite obviously take pride in their work. Shout out to Anthony for the excellent cut on my first visit today. This is a very warm, welcoming place. And for those who care, all were wearing masks, there's hand sanitizer, etc. Anthony paid super attention to detail with my cut, which was fashionable and made me feel good about paying a little more for it. The hot shave on the neck was complimentary was a nice surprise, as was my quick eye brow trim. Note: this is not a quick in/out cut! This is the real deal. My cut is basic but took about 35 mins. I loved the result. Walks ins are welcome, but on the weekend they apparently get busy with appointments. Looking at some of the few negative reviews here....I don't understand. If a place is busy and you miss your appointment, at that point you're just a regular walk in and will have to wait. If you don't like the way your cut looks, why not ask them to fix it right then while you are there? This is a 5-star spot and we need to support businesses like this in Davis, especially right now. Sat for an hour after being told it wasn't busy 5 min prior. Was faced away from the mirror the whole cut and after asking for a fade with a styled top, it turned out looking like every other customer - buzz the sides and straight chop off the top the same length everywhere. Saw a a barber accidentally go too high on the back of another customer neck, he made a face and then just raised his hairline halfway up his head. After having been turned away for being 4 minutes late to my appointment and rudely told to rebook last month, I came back to Bill because I really liked the way he cut my hair. Well, he took the appointment and had me sit in the chair, put on the cape and then declare that he couldn't do my hair because of the previous review I had left which was one star. Rather than try to redeem himself and be professional, he decided to refuse service and so I had no choice but to leave. The level of unprofessionalism is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Ok so I'm told I can't make appointments if the person I'm seeing is taking walk ins that day. So Jesse takes walk ins today and I get there right when they open and wait for him to show... he comes out and a customer walks up to him claiming to have an appointment with him! So he gets taken. My name is on the list for walk ins still and Billy goes and starts reading the names off.... Lol now you would think this guy has never spoken the English language before because my name is D-E-R-E-K, really hard name to say apparently for some. So I ended up getting skipped and walked out. I walked in here as a lady to maintain the half shave on my head. Long story short, this was the best shave I've ever had in the 2 years of having a half shaved head. I felt a little out of place as a woman but that quickly subsided because these guys are just plain nice, good people. They were so detail oriented and careful about everything and really seem to have a passion for what they do regardless of how big or small the project. When you pay $65 for a trim and shave, you expect top notch service and results. What I got instead was over an hour in the chair, the result of which you can see in the attached photo. I wish I could remember the barber's name so I could call him out individually, but it says something about the whole establishment that they employ someone so clearly untrained in basic barber's skills. When I went back for a refund and showed him this picture, he didn't even try to argue with me. He knew what he did. But he never should have charged me for it in the first place. Quite possibly the worst experience I've ever had at a barber, and I've had my share. I'm about to shave my head. I told the woman cutting my hair that I wanted it to look professional. I mentioned that the hair on one side of my head sticks out a little more than the rest, even when it's cut the same length. She got a little defensive and told me she new what she was doing, and I said that I trusted her. She used the clippers on my entire head and trimmed a little bit afterwords with the scissors. At the end of it all she asked what I thought, and I told her that the one side stuck out a little and she argued with me, saying that it was all the same length. Before I could say anything else, she took the gown off and ushered me to the cash register. When I got home, I took a closer look. There were patches of hair that were too long, and the top was overall shorter than the sides. It looks terrible. Never go here. read more

Dente's Barber Shop saved me from one of the worst cuts I have ever received almost three years ago and I have not looked back. You really need to ignore these posts pre-2009. The shop has been renovated with a new floor, nice television, and a modern look with an old shop feel and experience. This is a family run barber shop. My favorite barber there is Anthony. He is experienced and really gives each customer his utmost personal attention. You can go to places like Fast Phil's and you will get a fast haircut. When you get out of Anthony's chair no hair has been left unturned. His brother just started cutting hair there. He cut my hair last time and it came out great. I have also had cuts by Anthony's Mom and Uncle and had great experiences too. 5 stars for a great family owned local business...don't waste your time with other shops in the area I tried them all before finally finding Dente's. I have since moved to Natick and still get my hair cut with Anthony. read more

I normally go to [redacted], but I needed a haircut today, and the wait for a time with my guy was over a week. I got a cut from Ernie and I'm very happy with the result. He took twice as long (about 40 mins) as [redacted], and that's a GOOD THING. He took time to finish and style the haircut, with an extreme attention to detail. Definitely worth the extra time and the $5 more they charge compared to [redacted]. I don't like that they're cash-only in 2018, but it was easy enough to go to the ATM next door. No complaints until today, when I got the worst haircut. I had asked for a fade but got a buzz cut. When I gently told the barber I had asked for a fade, she yelled at me. When I said that all she needed to do was apologize, she got snide. My hair will grow back--but the sting of her attitude will stick with me. read more

I just joined Yelp so that I can review Dente's. I love this place. The guys (and woman) who work here all great... true class acts and give everyone the same quality. Doesn't matter if you're young, old, straight, gay, man, woman, bro, or hipster- you get treated with respect and kindness. You'd expect the barbers at a place like this to have big egos and attitudes, but they're honestly the nicest guys around. Be prepared to wait. I've waited nearly an hour for a walk-in, and even if I have an appointment they're usually running a bit behind. They also charge a few dollars extra for appointments as opposed to walk-ins, which is odd. But despite those drawbacks, this is my favorite place to get a haircut (and I've tried a few in the area). Dente's has great cuts, but the organization is sub-par. I have been satisfied with my haircut every time. The barbers are careful and usually have good advice to give on what they think is best for you. However, their appointment system is sometimes messy. They usually have one or two barbers taking walk-ins, and the rest are by appointment. I always try to get an appointment, but sometimes even if you are on time, they will make you wait past your appointment time. I have seen people walk out because of this. It appears they fall behind because they sometimes take their time with their cuts, usually stopping every once in a while to talk to each other, even in the midst of a rush. They are crowded, of course, because they give good haircuts. Great place to get your haircut, just don't plan on being in a hurry. read more
