They say an idiot is born every minute, and the continued operation of this establishment is strong proof. You know how major businesses claim to be customer centric, obsessing over the quality of their product and customer experience? Now think of the opposite. Customer allergic perhaps? If so, these fools suffer from a bad condition of it. They always are rushing, from the second you get in, you feel like they are racing the clock for you to leave. Tick tock, tick tock. They whiz you to the chair, deaf to your haircut instructions. When I tried to ask for more length on top and tighter on the sides, the so called 'barber' explained to me my instructions were unnecessary. "Simple men's haircut, I got it. Relax buddy". While I tried to explain I wanted to have something slightly different he got to work on his supposed vision (perhaps the vision of a bat). Five minutes later after a frenzy of imprecise cuts, he claimed done! Yikes, I was looking brutal. This guy actually did the opposite of what I said and gave me a horrible cut. The most revealing part was the employee kept his eyes on the door the entire time, speeding through my haircut in hopes another victim would walk in. I assume this is the reason for the rush, they operate a high-volume, one time chromed operation where number of cuts is more important than anything else. But here I was, screwed. Fuck. Not much I could do now but go up, pay and never come back. Wish it was that easy... They only take cash, a payment system stuck in the 50s (I'm sure to avoid taxes) and dial to post it anywhere. There is an old saying that things happen for the best.....I made an 8am appointment with a barber at LaFlamme today 9/11 and when I got there I was told that my barber would be one hour late.......to make a long story short , Andrew asked me if I wanted him to cut my hair and I did. From now on when I make my appointments it will always be with Andrew, he gave me a much better haircut than the barber I have been going to at LaFlamme. Preferable, the owner George. Nowadays. he may only be there Fridays and Saturdays by appointment. Check before hand. Today was my first and last visit to La Flamme. I agreed on $25 for a 5 minute bald guy haircut which is $5 more than I usually pay. Once he had me in his clutches, the barber painfully dug into my scalp numerous time. He flipped my ear back and forth with the clippers, skimmed over numerous parts of my scalp and wore a sadistic grin most of the time. I was glad when he was finished and opted not to have him apply his lotions after the cut. Needless to say, I won't be returning. If you don't have fancy hairstyle needs and are looking for a good barber shop, La Flamme is the place for you. They're remarkably quick, my hair always looks good afterwards, they don't load up my hair with gel that I won't bother putting in again. The staff are pretty good about talking if that's how you want to roll but shutting up if it's that kind of day. There are a lot of employees, though, so it's possible that I've just lucked out. My only sub-par experience here was once when I came in just before closing on a Friday and the guy was obviously in a rush - I left looking okay but felt like I'd gotten shorted a little bit. Also, I heard that Barack Obama went there to get his haircuts during his Harvard days, and let's face it: he knows what's up. It depends who you get. Sometimes, the cuts are stellar, other times they're average or somewhat lackluster, and I've got an easy dome to cut: just use the clippers to get it as close to the scalp as possible, shave the back of the neck and clean up the eyebrows. 3 times out of 5, you have to remind the barber to do the eyebrows. Sometimes, the barber can't wait to get back to his iPhone, and just does kind of a slap-dash job, which you realize once the Clubman is done evaporating. Other times, though, the barber is really attentive, takes his or her time. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the hot towel at the end is always a treat. There's usually a backup waiting for the owner, and old Greek gentleman, which is probably worth it, depending on who is staffing the other chairs. Lastly, this place ain't cheap. I typically tip ten bucks on a $17 'do (which, if you read above, you know will take no more than 10 minutes), but I was a little sorry I did so on my last occasion there. This one will require a little cleanup at home with my Wahl Five Star. read more

Understanding Covid-19 impacts all businesses and there are things you have to work around but having an online booking system that can be triple booked and then not holding spots for those that have booked well in advance and are on a time crunch is simply inexcusable. Expect at least an hour or two wait regardless if you book online or not which I might add states no walk-ins available and yet that is all they are serving with disregard to online reservations. The haircuts have always been vastly subpar but now management has taken extra steps to make this place horrible. Avoid until someone figures it out. And literally don't waste your hours or money. And ESPECIALLY don't waste the weeks it will take to grow your hair out again to inevitably go to a different barber shop because you know this one gave you a vastly subpar haircut. read more

This place used to be great but I think now it is hit and miss. If you get an old school barber they will do a great job (in a traditional style barber haircut) and you'll feel like you got your haircut in an historic and classic place. If you get one of the eastern European dudes (and especially the Albanian guy) just say "pass" and wait. He is rougher that he should be and keeps his clippers and scissors too blunt to cut without leaving you with a rash. I'm actually never going to go back to LF (after 20+ years) because of what a miserable experience I had with him. Guys. Pay attention. This is a barber shop. If you need your hair styled, or if you are looking for advice, ask before you put your ass in the barbers chair. There are stylists and there are barbers. Barbers may be familiar with as many as a half dozen hair styles, including the ol' favorite 'baldy cover-up', whereas stylists may know sorcery far beyond the realm of the workaday barber. There may be a female or two on the floor who moonlight as barbers, who come from styling careers - you might ask them about your roots, tips and extensions. Now. As a regular, non-skinny jean, bearded, glasses wearing, short haired, domesticated American male, I can tell you that this place is totally fine for a standard haircut. Little off the top, a lot off the sides and back and a trim on the ol' facial hairs, please. In and out. I've been here about a dozen times and have not had a bad experience. I've also never spent more than 25 minutes in the place. The price is right $15 to $20 for what I need and I always tip. read more

I'm not looking for anything fancy in a barber shop. Honestly, as long as it's a former hair cutter of President Barack Obama, I'm okay. Some might say that limits me, geographically. But who gets their hair cut outside of Chicago, Hawaii, Indonesia, and Harvard Square? I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that whatever barber I find has at one point shorn the silken curls of our glorious leader. Oh, which reminds me, President Barack Obama used to get his hair cut here. Do you think you're better than Obama? You know he's more attractive than you are, and has impeccable taste. I see you there, thinking that you know better than Barry O. You don't. Don't front. Honestly, though, every time I've been to La Flamme, I've had a straightforward and competent barber experience. Small talk is there if you coax it out, but if you're like me, you're not really looking for a chat about the weather or sports while your hair gets corrected back to its rest state. Quick and easy professionalism is the name of the game here. The most I've ever had to say to a barber here is "Looks great" and "How much do I owe you?" Which is, by the way, a perfectly reasonable $14. The most confusing thing about La Flamme is its name. As far as I know, there is no French background to anybody involved in the shop, and if Frenchiness is a marker for complicated-and/or-expensive avant-garde Continental styes, the adjective is definitely misplaced. There's no trace of Francophilia here. Which is a good thing. All I ever really want out of a hair cut is some no-nonsense asshole whom I wouldn't look twice at on the street chopping off enough to make me respectable for two months like it aint no thing. Surprised to see so many negative reviews for such a great barber shop. First of all, this is not a salon, a hairstylist, or an ethnic barber. So that may explain some of the reviews here. If you're high maintenance, don't bother. But if you keep your hair basic and like a quick, gentle, no frills, scissor cut, you'll be hard pressed to find a better barber near Harvard. At $15 this place offers men's cuts way below the market price. Anywhere from 2 to 45 dollars cheaper in my experience. Many on staff (and there are often at least 1 waiting for you when you walk in) have more than 5 yrs barber experience. Some MUCH more. I echo the praise here for Nour, he is outstanding. To sum up, if you want a lavish salon experience, go to one. If you want a decent haircut for an amazing price, look no further than La Flamme. read more

I've been here for hair cuts on four different occasions, and I'm finally fed up with the consistent bad quality and crappy hair that I walk out of here with. I'd avoid this place. They are only interested in your money. They'll cut you up quick, then give you the boot in order to take in the next poor soul. I'm Asian and my hair style is simple -- it's a almost a buzz cut. How do you mess that up? After almost every cut, I come back home to notice that my hair is lopsided or too short. They recently raised their prices, now to $15. Back in California, I used to get a cut for $8 by a careful and skilled barber. Never disappointed. OK, so after this haircut, I will never question YELP again! I looked at all the reviews in Cambridge and picked La Flamme after reading teh awesome reviews. Deena, cut my hair with the precision of a German eye surgeon - she smiled, just the minimum amount, asked me my name, told me hers and that was it, no small talk about my mum, my country blah blah blah. I did miss the barbershop banter, but I was here for a haircut so that was priority #1. She methodically trimmed, cut, combed..5 minutes later she was done and I was impressed, it was exactly what I asked for. I particularly appreciated the extra care she took around the ears, sideburns and along my neck. If you are a guy and are looking for a "barber" not a stylist to color your locks and trim your bangs, this is the place to go! Oh and its cheap too $14! read more

Old school barber chairs, dark wood fixtures and woodwork, marble counter tops, an ancient cash register: I liked the feel of La Flamme the first time I went in. There was always a queue of regulars waiting for a cut by George, the owner in the first chair. After trying out some cuts from the other barbers at the back of the shop, I settled on Vil who cut hair in the second chair across from George. That was over 20 years ago. Sadly Vil is gone and the 2nd chair stands empty. I now wait in the queue for George: barber to Presidents, Governors, Senators, and normal guys like me. George is a certified master barber who knows his craft. He can cut, buzz, trim, thin, snip my Asian hair to my liking, which cannot be said for all professional hair cutters. I say hair cutters because not all people who cut hair are barbers; not all barbers are certified master barbers; none of them are George. You can't find that consistency in high turnover haircut chains or in Chinatown. I think that a key to a good haircut by George is to get there early. Later in the day the old guy may lose a step from all the continuous snipping and buzzing. His queue can go 3 or 4 deep or more all day long. When I moved away from the area, I kept an eye out for those certified master barber certificates but couldn't find another George or Vil out West. On trips back to Boston for events, holidays, and whatnot, I've made time to wait in the queue for them to "fix" my hair. Now that I'm back I'm a regular again. read more

A solid, no-frills, barbershop that delivers a good, fairly-priced haircut. I've been going to Dina for the past 5 years and she hasn't disappointed me yet. I have medium length straight, black hair which I like to keep slightly on the longer side without it getting in my face. Dina listened to my request carefully and patiently when I first came to LaFlamme and took her time to cut my hair the way I wanted it. Now, 5 years later, she works faster and delivers the same quality haircut. Today, Dina was out and my hair was in my eyes, so I went with George, the friendly, silver-haired owner. He's been cutting hair in Harvard Square for 35 years and has an impressive clientele list including YoYo Ma and Michael Dukakis. Again, he took his time to listen to my request and cut my hair, delivering exactly what I wanted. From what I've heard, these guys aren't into styling and super fancy haircuts, so something to keep in mind if your hair needs that. Also hear that they deliver a very nice straight-razor shave. Only the back of my neck can attest to the latter, but I'll have to make a trip to get my stubble cleaned up. read more

Have worked and lived in Cambridge for 20 years and tried every barbershop between Harvard and Kendall Square. La Flamme is hands down my favorite. BEST FOR: Traditional haircut with scissors. If you prefer clippers to scissors, there are several good options in Cambridge. But if you want something longer than a buzz cut or have fine hair, La Flamme should be your go-to barber. To be super clear, this is not a salon. Suspect that several of the less positive reviews came from folks who expected a stylist not a barber. OTHER BENEFITS: Good value for money, convenient location, consistency across barbers, generally short wait times, and ambience throw-back to the 1950s. A locally-owned business rather than a chain, with the owner George keeping an eye on the shop to ensure quality and happy customers. TIPS: Avoid Saturday morning--only time of week where consistently long wait. Typically have to wait for George any time of week. Have found Dina and Mohamed outstanding. BOTTOM LINE: Have gotten my hair cut here over 100 times and my best estimate is 80% were excellent, 20% were good, and 0% were bad. read more

I don't know what is worse, the bad attitude or the haircut itself. I went in on a weekday afternoon this past week; the place was almost completely empty and several barbers were sitting around. I was called over to sit in one of the chairs, and the barber asked what I wanted. I asked for a #5 or #6 on the clippers--whatever is their longest buzzer setting--on the sides, and just blend the rest to match. I said I usually use pomade on it. Is there something about this request that would offend a barber? It seems so, because the gent sneered and proceeded to spray one half of my head with the water bottle. The other half remained dry as he picked up his scissors and snipped-snipped here and there, completely missing various parts of my head. In about two seconds, he stepped away. I was certain he was not finished, but then he said, "well?" Me: "Uhmmm...well...it looks like it needs to be evened-out a bit here, there..." Back to the scissors. A couple more snips, in the same places as the last ones, and my hair looked even worse. "Well?" he asked again. It was as good as it was going to get. "Do you have any pomade?" I asked, hoping the thing on my head could be tamed with the stuff. "We don't have pomade." "Um..." I said, looking around, seeing pomade sitting on the counter at the barber-seat next to this one. He walked away before I finished, brought back some pomade. "Ah, great," I said. "Do I have to do this for you, too?" he asked. Seriously. I wish I were making this up. Absolutely worst haircut experience ever. Note: this was my second time in the place. The first time in, I got another barber with not-so-great attitude (or maybe it was the same guy), but at least the haircut was passable. Not so, this time around. This place gets 5 stars for convenience since it's right in Harvard square, although it would be nice if they started taking credit card...). I love that it's a no-thrills, old-fashioned feeling place. Those two reasons are what kept me coming here all of grad school I would review this place overall, however, as 4 stars, as I have occasionally been slightly unhappy with my cut, but after two perfects cuts in a row with their barber Will, I just started going in and waiting for him to be free. He was impatient and unskilled！He was so bad and brutal that my head BLED after the haircut(as you can see from the photo), and he doesn't clean the hair on my forehead and elsewhere.
