i really like this place. When it's sunny outside, the light comes into the glass atrium and it's very bright and cheery. The food is great here; I had a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on an English muffin last week and it was so delicious! They have lots of different items, like sandwiches, wraps, and different flavors of Bubble Tea. The staff is friendly, and it's just a nice place to have coffee or a meal. read more

I had the pleasure of visiting Java Joe's Cafe while attending in conference in Bangor, Maine in 2008. This review is a bit over due but I wanted to give my shout out to this tasty and friendly coffee establishment in Maine. This is a great place to chill, people watch and grab a bite to eat. There are lots of stores within walking distance to Java Joe's which make this a great place to stop for a hot cup of "joe" before taking a stroll through downtown. I like the cafe so much that I bought one of their shirts. I wear it all time in California. I am often asked, "where is Java Joe's? I want to try their coffee." I reply, "You need a trip to Bangor Maine to experience the magic at Java Joe's Cafe. You might just see Steven King or at least his gargoyle iron gates too." read more

Looked for a spot to stop so my girlfriend could take care of some phone calls / internet time while on vacation. A typical downpour started as we pulled into Bangor so I stopped at the first coffee place. At first I was just going to have a coffee and her a 'choco-cinno'. I opted instead for a Thai Bubble tea, then I saw that the special of the day was a lobster roll on a home made hoagie. Out comes the Hersheys' syrup for her 'specialty coffee'.. Hmmm....I should have told her what it was. She probably would have sent it back. Then my Lobster salad came on a plain white store bought hotdog bun. I left the bread on the plate and just ate the stuffing. The bubble tea? Maybe fun for kids, but take a pass on it. Oh well, we had a place out of the rain to take care of business anyway. read more

First off, let me say that this shop appears to be under new management who changed the name of the shop when they took over. All of the reviews currently shown appear to be from the old shop/management, Java Joe's, and I'm sure everyone reading this knows what a difference good management can make to a shop! My experience today with 98 Wake 'N Shake was extremely positive, both women working there were very friendly, pleasant to talk to while I was waiting for my bubble tea + bagel, and then left me alone while I was eating and reading my book, and then chatted with me briefly on my way out. So whatever anyone has experienced before, I give this shop 5 stars on customer service. I got a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese, it was perfectly toasted with just the right amount of cream cheese, absolutely delicious. Additionally the cream cheese was smooth and creamy, unlike the super hard stuff you usually get at coffee joints, and was a lot less expensive than other places around!! That said, what drew me into the shop was the bubble tea (which is a major, major pain to make at home if you can 3ven get the supplies!). I got a Thai Bubble tea for the first time in years, and 98 Wake 'n Shake did not disappoint. Their thai tea had that perfect level of smokiness to it, strong without being overcooked, the boba (bubbles/tapioca pearls) were firm but not hard or crunchy, and definitely not overcooked like many of the places in Mass I had gone to previous. Best of all it had the perfect amount of sweetness to it. The price seems a bit steep at first, until you realize how expensive the ingredients are and time consuming it is to make. They don't stint you on the boba either, I had more than I could consume with my drink, I ended up taking them home so I could make more thai tea to put them in, they were that good!! 5 stars for an excellent bagel and amazing thai bubble tea. Overall I would highly recommend giving this place a try, especially if you have not been here since the management switched. I would add in the caveat of checking Facebook or calling before heading over, they do sometimes close early because they are such a small store, and they're only open weekdays currently. That said, if you like well priced delicious bagels, or are a fan of good bubble tea it is well worth the effort to get the hours and stop by. Side note: They had Butter Beer Milkshakes during Harry Potter Night. I didn't get one because they had run out of ice cream and were making a trip to go get more, but I heard they were amazing. They were super friendly and nice to everyone, even in the heat with a bunch of people who were grumpy they had run out of supplies (many other places did as well, a lot more people attended than anticipated). read more

I'm in town on business and was looking for a place to get coffee so I stopped in here based on it's name, "JAVA Joes." Java=coffee. You'd think they'd have several coffee options, right? WRONG. The minute I walked in the door, instead of being greeted with a "hello" or "good morning," the woman in the back simply looked up at me, rolled her eyes, and proceeded to continue whatever it was she was doing. I looked up at the signs on the wall, hoping for some kind of guide as to my coffee options, but all I saw were food options for lunch, and very sparing at that. I asked the woman "excuse me, what are the coffee options here? I can't seem to find anything on this menu." She says "What?" with a very heavy attitude. I repeat my question. She points over to a very small table in the corner with two coffee pots and says "it's right there" with a tone as if to say "DUH, you dummy." I say "oh, that is the only option you have for coffee?" She says "YEAH," very condescendingly. So, I make my coffee, I pay for it, and as I'm leaving I say "have a nice day!" to which I get absolutely no response. DO NOT COME HERE if you expect good service, or any type of coffee that isn't your standard gas station coffee. I am thoroughly disappointed with my coffee as well as my service, and for an out of towner this woman left me with a very bad impression of the town of Bangor. Let's hope the rest of my trip is better. read more

This is a nice atmosphere and I always appreciate when a cafe is connected to a bookstore, but the only hot tea options are chai latte and some unspecified kind of green. It's not a place to avoid like the plague, but sadly also not a spot to seek out. read more

This place is great! I was looking through the older reviews and came across a couple of negative ones from 2015 and older and all I got to say to them is GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY! These old reviews that I read is what made me have to type this review right now... This place is now under new management as of 1/2016, you won't meet nicer people! The shop itself looks amazing inside and out with flat screen televisions for those of us who like to watch the news or whatever during our breakfast or lunch. I personally love to sit upstairs and look out the huge windows and read the newspaper. Many selections of Carrabassett coffee available among a ton of other drink options. The food is made to order, what you want is what you get and it is all delicious! They also started doing ready made sandwiches for those who want to grab a coffee and a bite and are in a hurry!... Anyway, I had to do this review for those who will scroll down through the reviews and base their choice to not stop here off of those negative ones.... This is the only review you need to go by, trust me, you will not be disappointed and do me a favor, when you see Lisa or Regan tell them Doug sent you.... read more
