Just started here and after 4 visits I'm already feeling stronger and seeing a difference! The trainers are so fun and make sure you're using proper techniques. I never like leaving a review for anything until I have an informed opinion, but this one is almost two years overdue. I joined 9Round in the summer of 2021. I was coming off significant back issues and was hungry to get back into shape. I don't like "bro" gyms, and cardio was never my favorite either so I bounced around different places for a couple of months before a good friend recommended I check out the Lumina gym. In a matter of days, I was hooked. The 9Round workout is different from anything I had experienced before. You start with a one-on-one workout with a trainer to get oriented with the program and the stations. Almost immediately, you realize that the three-minute "rounds" go by extremely quickly - the martial-arts-style movements keep it super engaging, and the session is over before you know it. Again, I knew this was for me almost right away. I was clumsy and uncomfortable for a while, but the spirit of the trainers and the other members is very supportive - we're all learning new stuff every day, and we all sweat and grunt and look a little funny at times while we muscle through the workouts. It's a very fun vibe - a little bit Rocky, a little bit Karate Kid (1984), and just a hint of The Matrix. I know kung fu. I was very busy career wise for my first year at the gym, but I tried to make it in 4-5 days per week. Something that the 9Round marketing doesn't convey is the immense stress reduction you get from their workouts. Whatever is gnawing at you at the end of the day melts away after 30 minutes of jumping rope, smacking around a speed bag and running through a trainer drill. Although the program will encourage you to stay "in the yellow" on your heart-rate monitor, I found that the therapy value I get "in the red" was more profound than yoga, meditation, and well... actual therapy combined. I was losing weight, increasing stamina and feeling bloody fantastic. About ten months ago, my wife got jealous of all the fun I was having, and she started joining me for daily workouts. She got the plot even faster than I did and was hooked just as much. I was a little defensive of my guy time in the beginning, but surprisingly, this place is totally wired for couples. We have a blast competing in weekly challenges as well as in trying to embarrass the trainers with our weird sense of humor... All of the members we've met here are friendly, approachable and totally in the zone! Although you're in close proximity, each station feels private - everyone is in their own headspace and their own struggle. The subtext of camaraderie is very cool. All ages, all abilities, we all go all in. This has been a year of big changes for us. It's not totally relevant to this review, but we have had multiple hard losses in our immediate family. At times, everything felt upside down, but the gym was always there for us. After a while, we started going twice per day - once in the morning to get our heads right for the day, and once after work to bring the stress levels back down. I completely credit 9Round for a lot of healing that's happened. Sure, the workout is phenomenal, and you get lots of feelings out on the heavy bag rounds. But the best asset 9Round has going for it is the extraordinary trainers. Every one of the professional trainers we work with at 9Round is knowledgeable, fun, and engaging. They meet you where you are on the workout side and help you to advance and get stronger. On top of that, they are also some of the kindest, friendliest people we've met in Wilmington. There has never been a bad day at the office they can't make better. We consider them our friends as well as our fitness coaches. These folks work hard every day, and we appreciate it very much. I'm in the best shape I've been in since my 20's. For realsies. My diet is probably a B- at best, but I'm down 20 pounds and 10 points of body fat. My back problems are negligible now. I am able to add a different voice and opinion than many others reviewing 9Round. I have been a member of 9Round Wilmington for the past year. I am in my mid-70s. When people hear that it is "kickboxing", they may think it's something like mixed-martial arts that would require you to be young and in good shape, physically. Nothing can be further from the truth. As a senior citizen, I not only can get great exercise here but also have found it to be a much more enjoyable workout. I found typical gyms to have boring exercise opportunities. Just running on a treadmill (as well as other cardio) got old, fast. As you go through each of the 9 rounds, what you do at each station is so engaging and even fun. I've never felt that I was just going through the motions. The exercises actually encourage you to stay focused on the exercise you're doing, not like a regular gym where a headphone set playing music is what you use to entertain yourself. When I explored the idea of the 9Round kickboxing exercise, I was a bit hesitant because of my age and, typical for old people, physical condition. The owner who interviewed me was very understanding and did a great job of explaining it without pushing a hard sell. You can work with a trainer or by yourself. I didn't feel comfortable, at first, working without a trainer, and found the trainers to be enthusiastic, encouraging, and also willing to show me how to adapt an exercise that would be too hard to do for my situation as a senior citizen. I now work out mostly by myself and get great results. You can workout just as an exercise plan. You don't have to see it as learning to be an accomplished kickboxer. Each station has two exercises, and a video screen that demonstrates them, so it is easy to follow along. Three minutes at each station and your done with a nice, intense workout. You get a monitor that tracks your vitals, like calorie burn, heart rate, etc. You get an email soon after with your results when you are done. The exercises change over the week so you are not doing the same thing over and over again. The Wilmington 9Round has two locations. One is a 24 hour facility. You have a key fob that lets you in when trainers are not scheduled, and this allows you to fit your workout in when it fits into your schedule. I really think the owner should promote this more as a great way for senior citizens to exercise. Many seniors could see this as a way to stay healthy, and it would boost membership. Music is played over loud speakers, and you'll have to workout to some more high-tech, modern music a younger crowd would like, but they also play great music from the 70s and 80s. read more
