A-1 Metals is one of the five recycling centers left in San Luis Obispo County. They are located a few miles north of Paso Robles on the western side of the 101 freeway. The employees are friendly. The lines move quickly & efficiently. After the weighing of the materials, one receives their cash refund in the office. Consumers pay California Redemption Value (CRV) when they purchase beverages from a retailer. The beverage container recycling program was created in 1986. Refunds are now by weight of the materials, instead of by the size of a container, as the Assembly Bill originally called for. The program includes aluminum cans and glass & plastic bottles. Check the label to see if a container is eligible for CRV, as some beverage containers are not eligible (milk, food, wine, spirits, etc.). The container will say CA Redemption Value, California Cash Refund, CA CRV or CA Cash Refund. A-1 Metals also sells salvaged used auto parts. read more

My boyfriend and I came here to TRY to recycle our cans, bottles, etc. We arrived at 12:30 and they were closed. There was already a long line so we assumed they were on lunch, so we waited until 1PM. Finally, they open the gates just to tell us that they won't be open until 1:30! Please do everyone a favor and PUT THE CORRECT HOURS ON YOUR YELP AND WEBSITE. read more

I trusted this place because it had the most reviews!! BUT This place is a rip off! Once they get your loads they tell you to go to the office & they'll meet you in there. Instead I stood there & watched them, I watched everything get weighed out (it was fine) & then once they take it around the corner to the back THEN they wanted to say I had a bunch of water bottles filled with water!! (So Why didn't they say something when they were emptying it and going through it?) MIND YOU I DO EVERYTHING AT HOME, GO THROUGH & SEPARATE/EMPTY THEM ALL. So I asked him "so how many were full? I went through them at home & separated them all personally myself" & he went back around the corner and brought the whole trash can with ONLY 4 bottles with a LITTLE BIT of water in them, he threw 2 of them out which SAID "CRV CA CASH REFUND" & not only did they throw out those 2, they also threw out other containers I had that SAID "CA CASH REFUND 5cents" about 7 containers!!!!! I GO THROUGH EVERY CONTAINER I AM GONNA BRING SO I DONT WAISTE MY TIME. Everything weighed out to Cans - 30.20 Bottles - 45.65 Glass - 36.45 & WE ONLY LEFT WITH 50$ WE HAD 8-10 FULLLLL TRASH BAGS RIPPPPP OFFFFFF !!!!! They just need to shut this place down honestly. & they're workers are rude & don't know what they're doing honestly EDIT UPDATE: I've received the same amount of money for less amount of containers in Clovis. I've had 10 bags this time & the rude reply just SHOWS you how "professional" they are LOL THEY DEFINITELY NEED A NEW WAY OF WORKING & A NEW SET UP! I took my cans, glass and plastic bottles to A1 as first time customer. They did a great job, getting me in and out with $46 in reasonable amount of time. We have limited options for recycle north SLO county. I'm happy A1 is an option. In spite of busy, lines and traffic they do an awesome job. Very helpful and responsible shop. Called them to get a part to send overseas. When they didn't have a part for my cousin's 2010 GMC Terrain, they searched and recommended another dealer. Who does that now days? Not many businesses will go the extra mile to help another business. I found this gesture very kind. Since re-planet closed down, it has been tough finding a place to go return cans and bottles. Found this place in one of my searches and called to make sure they accepted CRV materials. Best to go on a weekday if you can. The first time I went was on a Saturday when they close early and pretty much everyone wants to go to do their recycling. Went on a Monday and it was a seamless experience. Easy process to follow as staff is there to help and are very efficient. Bonus - Check out the little jet plane (not sure exactly the type it is) they have there while you wait. read more

Ever since all of the recycle centers have closed, we have had the hardest time finding a place to bring our crv cans and bottles. We drove all the way from SLO to try it out...it was AWESOME! Very organized and quick, great customer service. All in all we were very pleased and will continue to trek from South county to do our recycling read more

Owner and shop staff are helpful and kind. Office manager, Karl, could make a nun cuss. The place closes from 12 to 1:30, this is not noted on the web site, gate, shop etc. Apparently there are several STATE Laws that consumers are unaware of. Not all are posted and when you question Karl about this he is demeaning, rude and unkind. read more

We ALWAYS recycle, but on the sometime occasion we turn it in for $$ we come here. They are very polite, do the hard work (taking it out of your vehicle and separating out the items) and pay a bit more than the average place. read more

For your CRV recycling it's A-1 Baby! Since most of the recyclers in SLO County closed these guys have come a long way. Even before the other SLO recyclers closed, these guys were at their best in customer service by helping you get through the recycling process quickly and efficiently. Now with them being inundated with recycling clients, they have made the process even better by getting everyone in and out by servicing 5 clients at a time and if one is not ready, they continue to other 4 while the 1st one is still ORGANIZING his/her recyclables....totally acceptable! This way the line is not held up by one or two "big" recycling clients. When you get to one of the 5 service spaces, you dump your recycling in these big netted bins and when ready, they take them and weigh them, then give you a receipt with the weights for each kind of recycling to take to the office after you move your vehicle to allow for the next client. Park your vehicle just outside the work yard and go to the office where they will give you, (dramatic pause), CAaaaSH, mooLah, greenbacks, Monaay (for most of us I think....maybe checks for high amounts IDK) for your receipt and you're on your way. This whole process only takes about 10 to 15 minutes with a filled-up sport SUV if, IF you have everything sorted ahead of time, and all you do is dump your recycling into the proper bins for weighing.....glass may take a little longer if it fills more than one of their glass content bins. read more
