What a Gem! I'm from Jersey & I've had a pretty difficult time finding a good Chicken Parm sandwich down here, but this place is it. The bread is fabulous, the chicken is cooked just right & not burned, not scrawny, not too bready. The sauce is just right. Love it! My daughter stole my second half and was equally impressed. Every time I come to Catonsville I visit A-1. Their subs are exactly the kind I remember growing up in Baltimore in the 70's, the rolls are soft on the outside and grilled on the inside and every variety I've tried is delicious; the cheesesteak, the cheesesteak pizza, the pizza, and especially the crabcake. I recently tried their pizza which, sadly, reminds me more of West Coast pizza than NY, but the sauce was good and the cheese plentiful. The service is excellent, too. I'm quite disappointed to be giving this location such a low review. I had just moved to the neighborhood in October and decided to finally try this place in December. I had gotten a sandwich and loved it. Though the tahini on it was quite bitter it was still good overall. I even went and got the sandwich again just omitted the tahini. A few weeks ago I got a large Taco pizza and a Greek salad. I LOVED it! So good and cheesy and had so many tortilla chips on it and the Greek salad was also quite good. A lot of feta cheese included in it. Tonight I finally convinced my boyfriend to try something other than his go-to pizza place and to order with me from A-1. I got the Taco pizza again. He ordered the large carry out special with two toppings for 9.99. ( which is a great deal) Tonight must have been the wrong night to order(I hope). My pizza ,instead of having tortilla chips like the menu states, was covered in regular potato chips. Which had become burned from cooking the pizza. Leaving a very burnt taste to the majority of the pizza. His pizza was barely cooked and was extra doughy and stuck to the box. Leaving a slice useless. I called to just let them know of my disappointment. Not really expecting anything in return just wanted to let them know to be more diligent when it comes to following instructions. Every weekend I order specials from A-1, I have never had a problem. My husband loves the XL pizza with xtra cheese, onions and peppers.. mozzarela stics and some times he changes and gets the Cheese steak with mustard ketch raw onions, you cant beat the pizza deals or the sub deals with fries and a soda. I'm only giving this restaurant 2 stars because I never actually had the chance to eat there. We placed a delivery order online and everything went through fine. They accepted our payment and told us they would be notifying us soon of an estimated time of delivery. Well 15 mins later some guy from the sub shop calls and says that they don't deliver to my house, it's just too far. Too far? According to map quest it's less than 5 miles away and we share the same zip code. Anyway when I told him to just refund the money he said he couldn't and I had to call a company they deal with...I called the number they gave me and after getting the run around for two days I finally got an email saying my refund has been issued but it could take up to 10 days. Love this place. Local and the food is great. I am a fan of the shrimp chicken cheese steak. They make it perfect! The only thing I would change is the bread if they had better bread I would eat there more often. Other than that I usually get the best service when I go there and order versus over the phone which is not bad for me because I live close by. The pizza and wings are great too! We have been looking for a new sub place since we just moved to the area. We chose A-1 based on the reviews, and I have to say, I am disappointed. We ordered the 2 sub special. When I called, right off the bat the guy was rushy-rushy, but I had questions. I asked what came on the mushroom cheesesteak, because typically a restaurant has "standard toppings" for each sandwich and you can pick extras or ask for something to be taken off, well he snarkily answered "whatever you want"... Duh, Guy. Of course I can get what ever I want on it, but what do YOU normally put on it when someone asks for it? The whole rest of the conversation was rushed. The food came and it was pretty bland. Although the side of gravy I ordered was pretty tasty. The Greek salad I ordered was way overpriced ($8.99) and instead of crumbled feta, it was a huge square of it with seasoning on top. No olives. No onions. But two thick slices of green pepper. When I walked in there were two guys working , one was on the phone talking to a friend (I knew this bc he was speaking in another language ) and the other guy was just standing by the grill. The owner or whoever he was did turn around and turned back around to finish his phone call which took another min. Then as I was giving him my order, a family member opened the door and they were having a small conversation interrupting my order . I want to use the bathroom to wash my hands and when I walked in the bathroom stunk so bad I almost puked , there was no soap but dish detergent to use instead (see pic) and to top it off the bathroom was so dirty , there were insects crawling around .
