I don't like to give bad reviews to local businesses, but I have tried Lulu's several times now and there is no reason those seeking a coffee, sandwich or sweet treat in a highly-touristed block of Salem can't find a better option. Everything I have ever had there is ok at best, and the prices are exorbitant. My experience is hit-or-miss with the service -- there is one woman who works there who is hostile and insulting, very weird. Other times, the counter staff is just inept (friendly is nice, but friendly and inept is not). They do things like pack savory items with bakery goods and more than once I have opened the bag to find a complete mess from an exploded donut or from icing all over the packaging of a sandwich. Speaking of sandwiches, the bread has been burned on my order more than once and the filling is so skimpy you can barely tell its there. I know we're all shocked at rising food costs but charging $11 for a small sandwich with barefy any filling is not fair. Other local shops are not fleecing customers this way. Lulu's is located on a very busy street in Salem and they seem to get a lot of business. The staff were nice and helpful. The food was ok. It was good spot for us to grab a quick bite before catching the train back to Boston. The dining room had ample seating and we were able to sit right away. Our food and drinks were made and we had to pick them up at the counter. read more

We were in Salem on the weekend and it was hot so needed beverages. Lulu's has housemade lemonade and icetea so we tried one of each. Lemonade was delicious and super dense so I actually added some water to extend it and it kept me hydrated all afternoon. We decided to have a snack as well. I got the cheese pizza square which was a little weak and getting dried out since it was around 2pm so that wasn't amazing but my husband had the cinnamon roll and liked the dough. Went to Lulu's bakery and pantry on my first trip to Salem, and I'm so glad that I stopped by! I got myself a gluten free brownie, easily one of the best brownies I've ever had, it was a perfect balance of sweet and salty, it had a wonderful mouthfeel, the brownie itself was super fudgy, the frosting was thick and chocolatey but not overwhelming, with just the right amount of flaky sea salt on top, I enjoyed it so much that I bought another to bring home to my family in California! When in Salem,MA this bakery is a visit. They have a little of everything. Soups. Sandwiches, coffee, bakery items! Bagels! It can get so busy but service was great and the 2 ladies were very good! They do have gluten free items . While they do say there can be cross contamination I wish they would separate the GF goodies from the regular goodies and wouldn't place them right next to each other on the shelf/ window. Tried the fruit tart, lemon meringue tart, and key lime tart with a lavender vanilla latte. I'd skip the fruit tart, the crust was weirdly stiff and had a strange flavor - like shortening that was a bit off. The other citrus tarts were solid and the crust had the crumbly buttery graham texture I expected. The latte was lovely - herbal and not too sweet. Space is open and airy with great light and had a small showcase for some local art. Service was fast and attentive. Nice place to grab a treat and catch up with a friend. read more

I was really looking forward to this almond croissant. I purposely asked if there was almond paste in the middle, I was told yes. There was a few slivers of almonds but no paste !! I would have ordered something else had I not been lied to. And went back for more . While I was in Salem, I came to this cute little bakery. You can definitely tell it's a happening place. It was very busy. There's some seating. they had a lot of different desserts and other items and drinks you can buy. This is not the best place for treats, I've tried a few times to find something I like because it seems like they have a lot of selection but everything that I have tried just hasn't been good. The cupcake I got was incredibly dry and the cookie was such a weird texture and flavor. The ambiance is nice though and their coffee looks good, they just need a new baker or new recipes! My best friend and I wanted to have a cute date on an early and cold Sunday morning. She had already been here before and was excited to show me this cute place. After difficult debate, I decided on their iced gingerbread cookie and a hot earl grey tea which was a must for the weather. My friend ordered their bacon and cheese scone in which the staff member heated but ended up with a cheese and spinach croissant instead, presumably by accident. But we had no problem with it because it turned out to be delicious with little bites of mushroom in the flaky crust. The cookie was also yummy with a solid structure but still slightly chewy center. Overall, we had a very pleasant and peaceful experience. The music was muted, bathrooms clean, and food was satisfying. Lulu's Bakery is a bakery off busy Derby St in Salem. It's clean, not very big especially if it's really busy. There's scones, bagels, sandwiches, cakes, coffee. I got a large iced mocha latte and 2 mocha chip shortbread cookies. Everything was pretty good. I was disappointed in the cost of the latte in relation to the flavour. It was $7 for a large which is ridiculous but I really needed a latte at that point. I also wanted to give Lulu's a chance. The mocha was made with care but felt like it was missing something in depth of flavour and for $7 it needed to be spot on. I would go back for the desserts but probably not a latte... The mocha chip shortbread cookies were nice but very dry, more than I expected from a shortbread cookie. I still enjoyed it. Try a dessert item at Lulu's, you may try something comforting or new. read more

I got a small latte with a shot of caramel, it was almost $7 and although it was good, for a small it seemed very expensive, also it was basically just milk with a splash of coffee which was a little disappointing for the price. The store itself is decorated very beautifully which was nice. Lastly, the person taking my order was very nice and considerate so that was good but overall I'd say it's quite overpriced and just be warned if your getting a latte your basically paying for a coffee flavored milk. read more

Absolutely fantastic food, do NOT let anyone tell you otherwise! I came to Salem from the west coast for Fall festivities this year and just happened upon this place after touring the HOTSG. The chicken salad on a homemade roll was so fresh and sumptuous I had to go back the next day. I had a breakfast sandwich on that crazy fresh homemade roll again that was big and sloppy but so so good. The desserts were all huge in proportion,, particularly the brownie that was fudgy and thick as a brick but tasted like it was made with top of the line dark chocolate. I'm basic and love all things pumpkin and thought I'm not the biggest fan of scones, they tend to be a bit dense, dry, and floury. I'm trying to cut back on sweets so I thought "Perfect! Since the first coffeeshop we tried to go to was closed, we stumbled upon Lulu's. Coffee was decent. I had cold brew and my boyfriend had hot which he said was slightly burned. Breakfast sandwich on biscuits are huge! They start with egg and biscuit and then additional ingredients cost extra. I added cheddar and bacon. They have lots of pastries that look tasty as well. What a happy place. Baked goods, sandwiches, soups, teas and coffee bar. They also make the best gluten free focaccia bread I have ever tasted! They have a number of daily specials, and today it was biscuits and gravy. The tuna salad was delicious and the grilled cheese looked nice and toasty. I loved the open air seating. I ordered a lovely and very large egg and cheese sandwich on a biscuit was only $4.50. The coffee was strong (they offered dark roast), which is a must for me.
