on 03/28/2020 i purchased 2 "suflair chocolates" at a&j seabra's supermarket at lafayette st (ironbound section) newark, nj and the chocolates are spoiled on a very bad condition even the validation date is not expired. i went back to the store at the costumer service to return the product and the person that was in charge didn't accept i return it and besides it he was very rude. i'm a regular loyalty costumer of the supermarket and i got very upset the way that i was been treated there! i hope a&j seabra's supermarket consider this inconvenience and refund the money of the product.

Every few months I will hear this mysterious call beckon from the pine barrens. Maybe it's Jimmy Hoffa's ghost from the Meadowlands. Or it's the refinery distillates from near Exit 12 on the Turnpike. Whatever it is, I'll schleppe out to Newark Penn, walk down Ferry street into Ironbound, stuff my face stupid with Iberian seafood/barbecue, pick up a dozen pasteis at Alvaro's, and end up here at this supermarket. And I'll be supremely happy surrounded by my favorite edible things. So, let me tell you about my favorites - piri piri sauce (sriracha is for suckers), Sumol (best soda in North America), chouriço (oh, the garlicky porky goodness), bacalhau (so many ways to cook it, so many delicious results), salt (the foundation of civilization and what makes meat taste good) and of course, meat. As a red blooded American nothing says bromance like a hunk of red meat sizzling on a hot cast iron cooking surface, especially if it's cheap. The Seabra family seemingly gave me an approving nod and said "yeah, we gotcha covered right here". So, A&J Seabra. There are 4 locations in Ironbound that I know of...and this one is the flagship. The fish section has a massive selection of bacalhau (different cuts) and fresh seafood, and the prices are fairly good. The produce section is competitive price-wise with the locals. The meat section caters to the Lusophones and the Iberophones, so they move massive amounts of Picanhas, briskets and whatnot. Therefore such items are much cheaper. $2.95/lb cyrovac Briskets? That's cheaper than Costco. Cut into cubes and stew for weeks of eats. $3.95/lb cyrovac Picanhas? Ask the friendly butcher to cut to 2 inch thick steaks you'll have multiple steaks for the grill. While you are there, try their chouriço - smoky meaty and garlicky, bring a link or 2 home...pan fry, add a shot of brandy and flambe it - It's great. Use them to flavor the Portuguese Caldo Verde - great soup and possibly the best way to enjoy that bag of kale from Trader Joe's. While you are there, check out the deli section. Portuguese cheese are great bang for the buck, as is their underrated proscunto (cured ham cousin to the Italian prosciutto or Spanish jamon) Don't miss the aisles dedicated to Portuguese groceries like large bottles of Incopil Piri-Piri (not too spicy, rather flavorful), chicken marinates for the grill (Nando's Peri Peri, meet your match), large bags of Portuguese sea salt (cheap here), plenty of Brazilian and Latin American groceries, and wonders of wonders, Sumol, the delicious Portuguese Citrus soda, made near Montreal (another big Lusophone area in North American). Get the Passion fruit flavor if you want to savour its majesty. Also, if you are a big caffeine nerd, buy some Guarana syrups here. They have it here in spades and not expensive either. And finally, their bakery section. They bake their own pasteis and stock fresh bread from Texiera bakery. Once you walk near it, you'll smell the heady bready aroma. Try to escape with only half a dozen. Checkout is usually fast and efficient, and parking is ample. As the call from the Garden state slowly recede and the train enter the tunnel towards New York City, I wonder why my wallet became rather light and my backpack rather heavy. Then I survey all I have purchased and felt a sense of profound joy. My larders are full and I return home with my favorite food items yet again. Great job, Seabra. Let this happy arrangement endure.

The place for all the fresh staples that make traditional Portuguese cuisine so damn good. 8 types of Bacalao, barrels of brined olives and pickles, cheese selections from not only Portugal but also Brazil,Mexico and Latin America, sausages of all types, custom butcher,a fish market that carry ocean fresh cockles, razor clams, giant Mozambique prawns,Madeira sardines, sweet cream butters,West African coffees, vast selection of Portuguese olive oils, and breads from Teixeira's Bakery delivered on the hour so they are still warm when you buy them. The veggies are extremely fresh and selection is vast. I can honestly browse in Seabras for hours and reminisce of my absolute favorite grocery "Jumbo's" in Cascais {Google it} The parking lot is small.tight and crowded and the only reason Seabra loses one star. Go and lose your self in the essential Portuguese food shopping experience in New Jersey. Update: renovations are completed and Seabra's is not only less cluttered but modernized.

Even though I don't live in NJ, I will absolutely come back to this supermarket. It's massive and clean with great prices! They have parking available, but is also within walking distance to Newark Penn Station. Although the store carries everything you need, it does cater to the Portuguese and Brazilian crowd, so you will find a lot of interesting and authentic products and delights mainly from Portugal. I also spotted a number of products imported from Italy and Spain, as well as the standard American products you'd expect at any supermarket. I can't wait to go back and pick up some of the salted bacalao... there's a huge section in the back dedicated especially to that! I just hope that my arms are strong enough for the schlep back into Manhattan from the train :-)

    Best spirits in town!

The place has a good variety. The prices are expensive if you compare with other big supermarkets.

Sorely needed in this food desert!…read more Across from the Federal courthouse and half a block down is this little spot of fresh and clean in the middle of a tired and run down strip mall. Don't go in expecting the Whole Foods expected up Broad Street later this year. Do expect to find your basic groceries at a fair price, plus some interesting surprises here and there as this store also tries to serve a very diverse neighborhood. Looking for "African American Chicken Treats"? Check the freezer, near the sausage. Halvah? Yep. Sauzón Goya? No prob. Frozen veg section better than many much larger grocery stores' because they prioritize veggies over the higher-margin veg-with-sauce that's come to replace veggies at the A&P. They even have a baby deli in there. And they deliver?!? Good place to know if you're working nearby, or especially if you live nearby.

If you dont feel like walking, there is tons pf parking. The owner and staff are awesome. I go there at least twice a week and I know most of the people by name and I'm always greeted entering. If they don't have something you need, just let them know because they probably have more in the back or will let you know when they'll get it. I love their meat selection. The price is great and it's good quality...overall the prices are good. It definitely means I make less trips to Walmart and/or Shoprite.
