The restaurant itself isn't that big but the guy behind the counter was full of life and energy and the place has a nice vibe. You go up to the counter to order and they have several different sausage options including vegan. Since it was my inaugural visit I went with the Old School famous dog and some Sweet Onion Maui chips. The sausage link was really tasty and it had an assortment of toppings on it along with it being in a fancy hot dog shaped dish. My only complaint is The serving dish. it's A substantial sized entree and difficult to pick up so you have to eat it with a knife and fork and it's difficult to maneuver in the hot dog shaped tray. Someone In our group got the wagyu jerky and shared with us. And as a side note I don't think that was very successful as it didn't really taste like much of anything. And when I think of wagyu, I want a nice fatty piece of meat, not a dried out chunk of shoe leather.

Well, I recently decided to finally put that can in the recycling bin and actually make it over to Wiener Kitchen....and...OH MY GOD IT'S AMAZING!!!! Why have I wasted so many weeks of my life not knowing how delicious the food is here? When the staff realized it was my first visit, they gave me the entire rundown of the food cooked onsite and the fact that you can also purchase their meats to cook yourself at home. It's a pretty small area for eating, but that won't stop me from coming back again and again because I can't believe how much I enjoyed the Chorizo Rojo and the Jalapeno Cheddar Kielbasa! I also had the Chicken Apple which was good, but the other two were the stars of my tastebuds. I'm sure to be back over and over as Wiener Kitchen is officially added to the rotation of frequented restaurants in my repertoire...and you should add it to yours too! I'm ready to call Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives! I figured Shakers would be the most popular attraction in Mound City, Missouri!! Anyhow...let me give a little info and background on Shakers. I was driving along my cross country road trip through Missouri and was yearning for a homely/informal restaurant that would be popular and authentic to the area. So I Googled "places to eat" in Mound City and Shakers appeared. Then I ventured on over here. Shakers is a little family burger and ice cream joint. They have a menu posted on a board next to the takeout window. Walking up to order...I could just sense whatever I chose was going to be hot and fresh made to order. Shakers is situated just off the main road. I parked in the lot and then strolled over to the front section where they featured picnic tables to sit down and eat at. When I was ready, I just went up to the window to ordered. The menu board was very simple, with cheap prices ranging anywhere from $5 - $10 or so. I'll list the whole menu board right here... - Ice Cream Treats - cups/cones, floats, malts, ice cream shakers, sundaes, flavor bursts, and ice cream specials! - Finger Foods - chicken tenders, popcorn chicken, beer battered shrimp, Buffalo chicken, cheese fries, nachos, mozzarella sticks, French fries, onion rings. - Sandwiches - pork tenderloin, chicken filet, deli turkey, tuna salad, grilled cheese, hot dog, chili dog, hamburger, cheeseburger. - Baskets (served with French fries and Texas toast) - chicken tenders, jumbo popcorn chicken, boneless Buffalo chicken, beer battered shrimp, catfish tenders. Basically, anything and everything you could ask for from a good old fashioned hamburger and hot dog establishment....Shakers featured. Seriously, they cater to the entire family and children. The menu board may appear small in stature, but it's packed with All-American favorites! I ordered an old cheeseburger with onion rings, soda and a large cookie dough shaker. The meal came to around $15 and then I threw a few dollars in the tip jar. I then waited at the picnic table for my order to be called. I was very surprised for the summertime just how quiet it was here, but because of this 2020 pandemic, I guess a lot of people were staying at home. Still, I was just grateful they even let me sit down at the tables because....I was getting quite tired of eating in the front seat of my car for almost every meal along my cross country drive. Another really cool aspect about Shakers is they had a drive-thru. So for those who'd like to take their food "to-go" with them...this was convenient. I maybe waited 10 minutes for my meal. My burger and onion rings came inside of a vintage old fashioned basket. My cheeseburger fresh was right off the grill. It came with lettuce and tomato on a soft bun. The onion rings were out of this world!! They were so hot and crispy straight from the fryer. The onion rings were the star of the meal! And my cookie dough shaker was filled with plenty of cookie dough pieces. For every bit I took...I had a piece of cookie dough in my mouth, lol. The shaker was like a meal in and of itself. Finally, Shakers was such a pleasant surprise on my trek through Missouri. It was a great way to have a no frills type of meal sitting down outside at the picnic tables while enjoying the warm summer weather. This charming family quick-stop grill was the ideal place for that meal I was craving. I highly recommend Shakers to everyone in Mound City. I hope this place is doing okay through the horrible pandemic. I hope Mound City supports them well. I assume the word is out on this place. Just...3 Yelp reviews is shockingly disappointing.

My son & I wanted to try a hot dog spot & Ding Dong Dogs came up. The cashier was pretty chill. We later found out that she was new. She was very informative though. You can get your hot dog grilled, fried, off of the roller grilled, or boiled. Also they have gluten free buns and impossible hot dogs so bring your friends with dietary differences. We got several hot dogs and sides. The 50/50 was seasoned well enough that I didn't even need condiments. I really enjoyed the chili though and the mac and cheese. Everything was so delicious. We'll be back.

They happened to be mopping with a strong ammonia odor, so that set the stage a bit awkwardly as we navigated our first time in. There's no kids menu (which is fine, it's by a college campus so likely nomt their demographic) but we got an original one with nothing on it and tots. As another reviewer mentioned, apparently you get the choice of grilled, fried, boiled, or off the roller -- we weren't asked and ended up with grilled. The tots were phenomenal, some of the best I've had, and I kept poaching them when she wasn't looking. I hope the biz owners know my intentions are very much in a spirit of offering constructive feedback, with hopes of coming back in, and not malicious at all here. Here are a few more things that were off that are worth calling out: -Vibes were a bit weird inside. The ammonia smell, tables dirty. My daughter went to get a water and saw cups and asked me if she could grab one, I gave a thumbs up from across the room -- turned out to be wine glasses! So she's loading up waters for the table in wine glasses, and a minor miracle we didn't end up breaking one. Kind of random to be set by the fountain machine. -The drinking fountain was out of order and it was pretty dirty back by the bathroom -Service was neutral at best, not really walking us thru anything and sort of half-hearted about it -The dog was kinda small for seven bucks What was fun though was the foosball table, so that's a cool addition. Feels very college towny across the board in here. I'll keep with the idea of supporting a new neighborhood spot, but a lukewarm first impression across the board.
