We were traveling thru town when a storm caused us to take overnight shelter at Audrey's Motel. The owner of the hotel recommended Quacker's to us. His praised it well so we gave it a try. We entered to find a group of sports fans and hunters dining and quickly found out what a great group of people come here. Everyone was friendly, fun, and we had a great evening. The food is freshly made to order from scratch, they accommodated me with a customized dish, and the portions were ample. The food was delicious! We have cheese curls with marinara dip, chicken bacon ranch wrap with seasoned home fries with dip, a BLT with seasoned home fries with dip, and a wonderful peach cobbler. We got full after half the meal and took the rest to enjoy at the hotel later. The waitress there was very attentive, polite, and is very good at service. She gave good recommendations and always had a smile. I recommend trying this gem off the highway because it is well worth it! If I travel back through this way again I will surely stop again. We went there for a drink. Ordered a double whiskey. The girl got a tall glass full of ice with maybe 1 shot whiskey and the rest 7up. It was so waterd down you couldn't even see the whiskey. So she made it in a small glass. It still was waterd down and the soda was flat in both our drinks. You guys need someone that knows how to make drinks and the soda can't be flat. Had sign outside chicken 3-6 . We like deep fried chicken but only had 1 dinner left with white meat and none of the side mashed potatoes. Hubby likes the only white so he chose to try it. It was cold and we found it was the special from the previous day and had been cooked and left for today. Waitress tried to lie and say it was just from lunch today which is bad enough. And it was not all white so he couldn't eat all of it. My patty melt had a weird taste and it had American cheese not Swiss. Our fries were thinly sliced like chips and they were soggy and barely warm. It was all TERRIBLE ! And it also took forever to get which is even stranger because none of it was hot. read more

Such a huge disappointment, I was really looking forward to trying this little place based on past reviews. But clearly a lot has changed since the glowing reviews of 2021. One thing that hasn't changed was their poor server was stretched so thin she couldn't take care of their customers. I give lots of grace to servers and last night was no exception, although I couldn't help but be frustrated when it took over 30 minutes to get my mixed drink (it wasn't good, but the server was also the bartender, so she probably wasn't trained), my pork tenderloin sandwich was overcooked & tough but she didn't have time to check back to see if it was okay. I also saw people around us getting the wrong orders and when something was forgotten, it was a long time before they could get her attention to ask for it, etc. And because she was trying to do so many things at once, she forgot a lot. We were there on a Monday at 5:00 and it filled up during the first hour of us being there, there was one server. Another server finally came in but they were still both overextended. No one wants to complain when people are trying so hard. And that seemed to be the overall sentiment throughout the small dining room. People were trying to get the server's attention to correct a problem, but she was moving so fast and trying to do too many things at once, so she missed the waving hands, requests, etc. Then there were other frustrated customers, like us, who just gave up on getting something corrected. And, that's not fair to the server(s) or the customers. So, the service was really lacking (no fault of the servers) the food and drinks were dismal, they were out of the condiments I was assured they had prior to ordering my meal, etc. Probably won't be trying this place again or recommending it to others. I wouldn't call this a typical steakhouse, more like a mom-and-pop, home cooking type restaurant. We happened upon this place while traveling from Atlanta to Wyoming. The place was PACKED and the only waitress was busting her tail to juggle every table. Despite that, she was friendly and attentive. I ordered the pork chop with sweet potato fries and a salad. The pork chop was massive and was the best, juiciest, most perfectly cooked chop I've ever eaten. That's not something I say lightly. Flavor was amazing and it really couldn't have been cooked any better. It was tender and delicious. The sweet potato fries were also the best I've ever had. I am NOT a fan of soft fries. I requested they be crispy and Quackers delivered. My husband had a good old burger with fries. He raved about how juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked his burger was as well. I started to give 4 stars because the name "steakhouse" denotes a certain expectation of elevation and atmosphere, but the food was so incredible that for what this place is, it needed 5 stars. Just don't expect a traditional steakhouse experience if you're online and trying to decide where to eat. We passed back through the area on our way back home to Atlanta but sadly we were too early for them to be open. If I could have another one of their pork chops, I'd eat it for breakfast! The food was good, nothing special. The server seemed like she didn't really want to be there. We were the only table at the time and she was busy in the back talking to other employees. Went to Quackers for late morning lunch on a Wednesday. Server gracious, but food was quite slow to come out - other tables ordering after us were served before us (which she did apologize for). At issue was my hash browns side... gray, mushy, and decidedly un-brown. Mostly hot, but totally miscolored and raw looking. I just asked that the kitchen be made aware, I didn't want anything else. I don't know how this place has any reviews over 2. We got there about 2:15 and a sign on the door said they were closing early at 3:00. We asked if it was ok if we ate there or if they had already cleaned the kitchen, the waitress was like, come on in, no the kitchen hadn't been cleaned yet. So we sat, ordered our drinks, and decided what we wanted for lunch before she came back with them so as not to take too much time. The service was horrible. We were the only ones in there, and every table was still dirty from I'm guessing the lunch rush. The empty parking lot should have clued us in, but we thought it was just because it wasn't really a traditional meal time that we stopped by. Everything was slow to come out; and the fries, oh the horror, they looked so good, but despite the color leading you to believe they were going to be perfection, they were soggy and wiggley Fries should not wiggle! I also got the buffalo chicken wrap, the wrap was so wet, from wet lettuce and too much and very thin buffalo sauce, I needed extra napkins but alas our waitress never came back to check on us so we had to take the wrapped table settings from another table. We hurried through lunch as to not stay any longer than necessary and we had to go up to the counter to get our bill and pay at which time we found out the waitress had just left and no one still in the establishment knew how to work the register. Thank goodness we had cash! So we left what we thought would cover our meal and some tip money for the poor girl left to finish the waitresses' job. She was very apologetic about her register knowledge shortcomings. We don't get out that way often, but we will not be eating here again on our next trip, I assure you. read more

Mound City is in the middle of some prime hunting areas and this is definitely a hunter-oriented place - lots of game mounts on the walls - but since we're members of PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals) it was fine with us. It's a rather small - maybe 16' x 35' - one-room bar and grill, half of one side being the bar. One wide-screen TV, playing an HBO movie which we found fairly easy to ignore. We both had the dinner special - $8.95 for grilled chicken breast with baked potato, grilled toast and salad. The salad was iceberg lettuce with a leaf or two of radicchio, some red onion, tomato wedges,shredded cheese and croutons. The chicken breast was charcoal grilled and juicy and the potato came with real butter, not margarine. Sour cream (real, not artificial) is extra. Good food, nothing fancy. Dinner entrees are around $15-20, burgers & sandwiches under $10. read more

Stopped here for dinner the other night. Ordered up the 16oz Ribeye, hash browns, and garlic toast. I also sampled their in-house old style cut fries. Overall it was a great experience. The restaurant is a hang out for locals and we were welcomed by a number of folks as we entered. The food was reasonably priced for the portion size and had good taste. The best part were their fries and Texas toast garlic bread. This is your typical local small town restaurant. It was nice and cozy if you enjoy this type of restaurant. I have this place marked for future stops when I'm passing through on I-29. Service was excellent, in fact, the waitress was also the bartender and was working her tail off. The family took a little trip to St Joe to pickup a new smoker and on our way back like always everyone became hungry for some reason. Pulled into Mound City and seen the signage on the back of the bar slash Restaurant so we decided anything would be better than McDonald's. You can tell the place is where all the avid waterfowl hunters come to drink and eat at the end of the day but that is okay with us as we hunt to. Walked in and were greeted by a table full of regulars and the waitress with open arms and smiles. We were seated and the special was a 16oz rib-eye and baked potato with a salad for $15.95 and thought what the hey. Food came out hot and on time and was one of the best steaks I have had in a long time other than my own amazing steak I grill. All was fresh and very tasty. Other than the food the service was great and we especially enjoy the Old boys club that was gathered and enjoying their day there as well. So if you find yourself hungry and needing a stop along I29 I would highly recommend Quackers for a great meal along with a little ribbing from the Good Ole Boy table and have a laugh or two with them. We ate lunch here after a morning visit to the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge (a site to behold by the way, tens of thousands of ducks, geese, coots, etc. Lots of muskrats and beaver, some cranes. Apparently one of the largest eagle nesting destinations in the US. But I digress). This is old school cool, do not expect micro greens or a kale smoothie.However, the food was great, I had one of the best patty melts ever...the fries were among the best. M had a dinner salad that was fresh and tasty and we shared a serving of a most delicious strawberry shortcake. The prices were very reasonable and the service friendly, helpful and efficient. I would definitely recommend dining here if you are passing through on I-29. When we went in, it seemed like everyone there knew each other and watched us as we walked around the dining room, like goldilocks, finding a table that was too hot, too wobbly, and finally just right. When we smiled at folks, they warmly smiled back or commented on the wobbly table. The food was excellent. My husband and I had the catfish special and my daughter had a Philly cheese steak sandwich and loaded fries. All the food was great. They serve very generous portions. The server was casual and efficient.... She got the job done and was working a full room by herself. Fresh and delicious, the coffee was outstanding, and the price was half of what we are used to paying a corporate breakfast spots; the bathrooms were nice and clean too!
