Whenever we head north, a stop needs to be made in Pine City, MN. There aren't many of these original A & W drive-ins left, so we have to support it! This place just makes me smile. The servers are always so sweet and prompt! The food is always good and that root beer in the mug is so cold, delicious and creamy. This place is well maintained and is just a few minutes off of 35! Nostalgia hits hard on this one...reminds me of being a kid, sitting in the backseat and leaning over the front seat of my parents car waiting to get my baby mug of root beer. Love A & W!! The time it took to get the #1 combination took a bit longer than expected, but not too long of a wait (I guess). What bothered me is I was looking forward to a frosty mug of root beer and THEY PUT ICE IN THE MUG! That is unacceptable. If someone specifically asks for ice in a frosty mug, fine - give it to them. But by default, anybody who knows anything about A&W would not expect ice in their frosty mug! Like the old Miller Lite guy (may he rest in peace) said: "The only thing that should be in your beer is BEER!" It goes double for A&W root beer! Somebody needs to explain the tradition to the employees. I didn't complain because the establishment was getting real busy, but this needs to improve. read more

Just road tripping on the scenic byway and came across this A&W. I was so pleased to see it open as the one near my hometown closed some 30 years ago. I swerved off and said we must stop here! There is a drive up option, fun experience. We went inside and the decor was well maintained while holding true to the brand and era. The food was delicious. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger with a side of cheese curds and regular root beer. The absolute best was that my root beer came out in a frosted glass that kept it deliciously chilled till the last drop. read more

Stopped here to mainly use the bathroom as the two thrift stores nearby don't have restrooms. It was close to lunch time. I ordered the pork tenderloin meal special. I'm used to good pork loin sandwiches in Iowa and this was just so so. I could taste the oil it was fried in. The buns were stale. I ate it with half the bun. It had a tomato, mayo and iceberg lettuce also. The fries were surprisingly really good here. Shoe string with a good seasoning, not soggy and crisp and hot. They bring you your food at your table and my diet a and w rootbeer was served in a glass mug. People in drive thru were ordering cheeseburgers so maybe that's the best thing here. Grateful for a public bathroom. This A and W has drive in spots, so cool to see old school ordering. I try not to eat in my car. read more

A classic American fast food restaurant...and the best root beer! Stopped by on my way to Duluth, had a fish sandwich (fresh and hot), onion rings (gotta love A&W onion rings, they're basic but good), and a classic root beer float in the glass mug. If you enjoy A&W, haven't been to one in a while, or are new to this iconic restaurant, make the effort and stop by. They still have the 50's style drive-in where you can eat in your car. I went inside, but next time will try the drive-in. The staff was courteous high school age gals, friendly and smiling. The place is clean and kept up. Oh, and in 2019 they're selling their big root beer glass mugs (and little ones for the tykes too) celebrating 100yrs! Get a couple for home. QThanks A&W! read more

I am a HUGE A & W fan and stopped for lunch at this location. What a disappointment. VERY slow service (after 2 pm, so not even at the height of lunch hour). Multiple employees on the scene and the food was slow to arrive. Burgers were small and appeared to be just thrown together. VERY overpriced for what was received. We will not be back. Stopped here from our annual adventure to Duluth, MN. Love this place on so many levels: not too far from the hwy, old fashion food, and perfect distance to rest between Minneapolis and Duluth. Last but NOT least, it has a plug in charger less than 100 yards away for my electric car plug in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, these are 1% problems. Yelp needs to ponder to indicate all the restaurants/business that provides plug ins for e-car people. Trust me, there are many of us out there and would love to know this. Don't eat here unless you want to get sick AND ripped off! The burger was so greasy it made my fiancé sick and they not only couldn't refund me because we picked up right before closing and their system won't let them access orders from the previous day, but we weren't even offered a remade meal. The female manager I spoke to was very polite, but refusing to make it right when someone has gotten sick off of your food and missed work and therefore lost a full days pay over it is bad business. read more

This is a great alternate route from all the construction on 35. Passed by on a Sunday afternoon and the place was starting to fill up. It's kind of the local place to be. There is a lot of staff behind the counter. I just wanted some rootbeer to go. We wanted to sit for a bit with icecream before we took off and found a corner table. I was surprised that they serve chocolate. I was tempted but their vanilla is classic. First sips of rootbeer were almost lukewarm. I just got a glass of ice to combat that. It's a very nostalgic look, unfortunately it seems like nothing's been touched since opening day. Splits in the booths, floor needs one of those cleaning blasters or a new one, no firmness in the seat, you sink right down, bathrooms grungy. Funny thing is customers don't seem to care cause the food is so good. Maybe I shouldn't care either. I have always loved A&W and they are hard to come across these days. Whenever we make the trip up North on 35 or back South this is the place we stop. This A&W's fries taste different then the others. I'm not sure if they do their own seasoned salt but it's grand. And who can go wrong with draft rootbeer. The burgers seem to be getting smaller and the flavor has changed so I'm not sure what it is they are doing but I hope they don't lose their quality to have a cheaper overhead cost. The cheese curds are good and they have twist cones. The staff has always been friendly and they have neat little sit down high top table around a fireplace. We've never used the drive up service but there is one there. They take your order at counter and when your food is ready they call your name to go up and get it. read more

Ahhhh good ole' A&W. This particular location is so much better than any other 'chain' location around. They have a drive-up (kinda like Sonic) where you can eat in your car with the tray attached to your window, or you can take it to-go. Pine City isn't exactly fancy, so your choices are limited, but if you find yourself passing through on your way to Duluth (or the casino) do yourself a favor and stop in for the deliciousness. The only complaint would be the long waits for your food, during peak hours be prepared to wait a good 15 minutes. They are old school with their orders, writing them by hand and handing them to the kitchen. They are old school with their payments, I am not even sure if they take credit cards yet, but I typically have cash when I go there, so I cannot confirm. You pick up your order at the front when your name is called and you leave your trash/trays on your table when you leave. This can create a bit of a problem during peak times, it is hard to find a table that is unoccupied and clean. It would be nice to have a trash receptacle where trays can be left, kinda like Panera. They have had the same owners forever, family owned and run. however, you still have to deal with the stupid teenager taking your orders from time-to-time. its a small town, good help is hard to find. Get a root beer float and onion rings with your bacon cheeseburger, never mind the calories, enjoy the deliciousness. read more
