In general, Yelp doesn't lead me astray; unfortunately, it did this time. Looking for someone to complete a VERY simple job - rekey 3 Schlage cylinders to match a 4th Schlage cylinder. Called Paul, left a voicemail. Yelp quotes 1-hour response time in nearly every case. I guess I wasn't part of that percentage. 6 hours later, I get a call back, and am quoted $95 to rekey (including $50 service charge). Paul also, graciously, offers to waive the service charge if I meet him somewhere nearby his home, down to $45 for 3 cylinders; he says it would work better for him anyways. Not too bad. I ask him whether we can meet the next day before 9:00 AM, he tells me sure, to meet near his home location (about a 20-minute drive from my home). I tell him I'll call him when I get there, and we're off the phone. Mind you, he was also somewhere loud at the time, and seemed distracted, wanting to get off the phone as quickly as possible. Figured he was busy, chalked it up to that. Next AM, drove the 20 minutes, arrived about 30 minutes early to the general vicinity of where he requested, and sent him a text message (as he had also stated that he can be texted in his voicemail message) letting him know I had arrived. 20 minutes later (around 8:50 AM), he texts me and asks me if I can meet him around 9:30 AM. I tell him that I was already at the location that he requested to meet, and he tells me that the best he can do is 9:20 AM, because he just left for a job scheduled for 9:00 AM. Completely unprofessional. Look, I get it; if someone's being paid on a per-job basis, you don't want to deal with no-shows. But if someone drives to you (at your offer), and has such a quick job as rekeying a few cylinders, arrives early, and texts you upon arrival, don't make them wait for over an hour to get the job done. Customer service is important, and not only did it cost Paul a quick $45, it's blemished an otherwise spotless Yelp account. Ended up taking my business elsewhere (on my way out-of-town), and paid $18 for the same service, with excellent results. read more

Today was my first experience with A Better Locksmith and it is clear to me that Paul has earned every single five-star review on Yelp! Having lived in this area for 12+ years and having serious issues with numerous locks and keys for our home, Paul was able to get us organized in no time and for a very reasonable fee. First, Paul promptly replied to my inquiry for a quote about the job we needed done and included his availability. I booked him right away and he gave me a date/time he'd arrive. While on the way to our home, he sent a text to let me know approximately how much longer he would be and arrived TWO MINUTES EARLIER than the appointed time; so far so good. Second, Paul was polite and cordial on arrival. I explained what we wanted to accomplish by pointing to the various locks in question and he explained the most efficient and affordable plan of action. Third, Paul lubricated all of the locks in question with the proper dry lubricant after he saw that I was using a wet lubricant which only made our locks stick as that type of lubricant attracts dirt, dust, and grime. Now I know if I come across that issue in the future! Fourth, he efficiently completed the job, noted my Yelp coupon code and did a paperless invoice and payment for the services rendered. It was so cut-and-dry and I don't have to shove a stupid paper invoice in a bottom drawer, as a digital copy will always be available in my saved email. What many naysayers said online about rekeying locks was incorrect and Paul was kind enough to put many of those rumours to rest for me, which I really appreciated. Paul deserves more than five stars. He arrived very quickly after my call, and proceeded to try to pick the locks on an old piano. Unsuccessful, Paul had to drill out the locks and replace them. He had all the necessary parts in his truck, and successfully replaced locks for an unfamiliar application (a piano). He was careful and cleaned up after the job. Great service!! When we bought our home 2 years ago it did not include a key for the mailbox. Paul met me at the group of neighborhood mailboxes and set us up with a new lock and 3 keys for a very reasonable price. More recently I had the front door knob literally fall off. After trying unsucessfully to put it back together I called Paul and set up an appointment for the next day. After seeing the door hardware he told me that the hardware I had bought for him to put on wouldn't work for our door. He then did a wonderful of job of putting our broken entry door hardware back together and made it work better then it ever had. Since I loved the look of our original hardware I was very happy that he was able to repair it.
