After a few mins the unhappy lady took us next. We said we'd need a box since we were planning on getting 9-10 donuts. She snarked, "well I'll have to charge you $.50 for the box if you don't get a dozen." Yeah we saw the sign, but isn't that the cost of doing business?! They aren't charging for wax bags, plus I'm buying 10 items (~$16 worth) which should have the box factored in anyway at only .05 per donut... which is probably the cost of the wax bag they don't charge for! Enough statistical analysis. Then we ask about the chocolate covered Bavarian cream vs. the choc cov'd custard. That sent her into a tiff as she set us straight! Basically their Bav. cream is white & custard is yellow. But most examples online showed Bav. cream as a light yellowy custard! On the bright side most of what we got was tasty. The best way I can describe it is modern, traditional, and farmhouse-inspired all at the same time. They have this beautiful ironwork sign out front with their name on it, and it immediately caught my attention. The real star of my visit, though, was Emerson. She was absolutely amazing. She took the time to explain everything they had to offer and gave me plenty of space to look over the menu before ordering. I ordered the Pigeon River Latte and wasn't even thinking about the milk situation. Emerson asked if I wanted whole milk, which immediately reminded me that I am lactose intolerant and that choice would have ended my day very badly . That extra step showed a level of attentiveness that you don't always find. She wasn't just taking an order. She was actually thinking about the customer in front of her, and that deserves recognition. Emerson also explained that most of their menu items, along with many of the products in their refrigerator cases, are locally sourced. The only exception is the burritos. I absolutely love that. Since I'm also a kombucha girlie, I grabbed the "Bumble Blossom Jasmine" and the "Be Still" from Bailey's Farms to try. Both were great choices. The space itself was clean, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed. Parking was easy to find right out front. To be fair, I arrived around 8:00 a.m. right when they opened, so if parking had been difficult, I probably would have been concerned lol. Another detail I appreciated was finding resources in the restroom related to women's safety. It's a small thing, but it showed me that they care about creating a safe environment for their customers. I was also excited to learn that they offer delivery. Since I'm in town working with my team, and many of us are up and moving well before 6:30 a.m., knowing they're open at 6:00 a.m. on weekdays and can deliver is a huge plus. Overall, I highly recommend Brennan's. If you find yourself in Gaylord, Michigan, give them a shot. They earned every bit of this 10 out of 10.

The Black Squirrel recently opened up in the sleepy, forgotten town and it's like a breath of fresh air was pumped in to liven the tired town up. The owners are local so you know they care about their customers. It's evident the moment you walk in when you are greeted by a genuine smile and accommodating attitude. I was excited to try this place and the building itself welcomes you and kicks your experience off on the right foot. You first notice the amazingly clean and airy atmosphere of the bakery, then greeted by kind faces but when you peek back into that pristine kitchen and see the owner baking amazing items to set out, you know you are at the right place. They serve coffee - both drip and espresso specialty drinks - breads, desserts, and breakfast items (both sweet and savory). I got a vanilla mocha, a bacon and ham egg bite (it's the size of a muffin though), and a cinnamon roll. We drove back to the house and warmed up the food. The egg bite was very good. Simple but the perfect savory item to start with. The cinnamon roll was excellent - soft and fresh with cream cheese frosting that really hits home! Note that they are only open from 8a-12p (Tue-Sun) and often run out of things. They also have kitchen gifts and bread accoutrements that I'd like to try in the future as they have a special daily bread menu. Since we got there fairly early, they were setting new items out as they were prepared (which made it hard to choose, but in a good way). We will definitely return to try more of their amazing food!
