The crew that packed and loaded, and the different crew that unloaded were all great. I would use them again, but would probably get a few things clearly established in writing or observe in person. We recently utilized A Better Way Moving & Storage for a recent move from Nashville IN to Lake County Illinois. We were moving furniture from my parents home who had recently passed away so it was important to find a mover who really understood our situation and the attached value we placed on my parents furniture. Furniture included antiques as well as other fragile items. It took a lot a time to find a mover who seem to really care. After several calls I finally found A Better Way Moving & Storage. Talking to Randy, carefully listening to him I sensed that I had finally found a moving company who really understood our situation. On one of the worst days for a move which included heavy rain and wind Doug and I think Mitch arrived at my parents house and proceeded to move the furniture onto the truck. Doug and Mitch were true professionals and highly experience. They were very focused and extremely careful and......fast. They left and driving to Chicago on I 65 in heavy rain and windy conditions they got to our house and within 20 minutes were done in 5.5 - 6 hours. We had no issues, just perfect. Doug and Mitch explained to us the art of moving antiques and fragile items. In simple words there is a proper way or a easy way. Doug and Mitch use a most proper and effective approach. Never ever use this company to move ANYTHING!! They lost(stole) 2TV's and a Stihl chainsaw, plus did over $3000.00 worth of damage. They have man older guy packing who can't read, spell or remember what he packed! Plus they put all their remnants of packing materials in your boxes! There was no option to give ZERO stars, but that is how I would rate this company. I had used this company twice without issue doing crosstown moves, so when I was going to move to California, I hired them. They picked up my belongings and were going to store them until I had a permanent address. When my things were finally delivered I discovered that they had left the headboard to my bed in Indiana. They delivered three sides of it and the bottom support, but guess what, it cannot be assembled with 1/4 of it missing! They had broken and damaged multiple items - they even threw out part of my lamp because it was damaged so badly they didn't even think it was worth delivering. Clearly my belongings were stored poorly - the seat cushion on my exercise equipment is permanently dented with the imprint of my bicycle tire. Some of my boxes were squashed to half their size. They had not delivered parts of other items - a lawn chair with pillow attached was delivered without the pillow. They had disassembled some of my furniture and then not only did not reassemble on delivery, they didn't deliver key parts - like the legs of a table. Let me repeat that: they didn't deliver the legs of a table. It has been over two months since my delivery and nothing has been resolved. I submitted a claims form and got no response. I still don't have my headboard. I also prepaid for storage that wasn't needed and have never gotten reimbursed for that. I'm extremely disappointed in this company. They seem to have written me off completely. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

We booked Better Way for a long-distance move as we had previously used them and had a good experience overall, with the exception of insufficient wrapping of furniture that resulted in scratches. This time they sent out someone to give an estimate, the numbers looked good, and we booked a June move at the end of March. I hired A Better Way to move between two homes in Bloomington. A rep came to our house and walked the whole place with us taking notes about what we would need moved and what we would likely move ourselves. And what we would have boxed up in advance (most of it). We got an estimate by email. Then we called to agree to have them move us. The three-man crew was courteous, treated our belongings with living care and attention to detail. They alerted us a few particle-bod items that's that might not hold together. These are "IKEA" type bookcases and the like. They spotted a weakness in an antique table and had us sign a damage waiver. They moved everything in sight Ly less than the time estimated with only one damaged lampshade. They asked where everything should go in the new place. I was very pleased with the service. read more

I ordered a rug from a local furniture company. They arranged for A Better Way to deliver and install it. The furniture company stated that they do business with them all the time, and that they should know that they are expected to move furniture when they install the rug. The first thing the delivery men did when they showed up was to ask for extra money because they had to move furniture. Even if there was a misunderstanding (which is doubtful), I had actually already cleared the installation area to clean the floor where the rug was going to be installed. The only thing in the way was one very small table which only had to be pushed two or three feet. It is rather sad three grown men would expect to be compensated in excess of the agreed upon fee for the work a child could have done. Finally, once that was sorted out, the three grown men then proceeded to struggle valiantly for ten minutes trying to open the plastic packaging that the rug and pad were secured in. I hope they used the money I paid them to buy some scissors. read more

I have used A Better Way for multiple moves, and have recommended to many of my family members and friends. Randy and Merlin, the owners, are down-to-earth, hard-working, southern gentlemen. They made me feel so comfortable with my move from Indiana to Austin, Texas. I was quoted a fair price, with full explanation of their policies, insurance, and what to expect. I bought some wardrobe boxes, which were excellent for hanging clothes (and stuffing the bottom with light stuff, like pillows). I also bought a few other boxes, for some decor that I was afraid would break. The movers came and worked hard and efficiently. They took care of it all. Best part is, nothing was broken, everything arrived safely, and the nice gentlemen moved all of my furniture to the room I asked them to. The prices are great and they were very professional. I also used their storage service while I was in college, when that gap between leases makes life and living tricky. Randy and his crew have moved me multiple times. All my moves have been local. They've always been prompt, professional, courteous, and respectful. Better Way has never damaged even one item, and there's never been anything missing. During my last big move, the last of my belongings were moved on an especially bitter cold day in February. This last load of boxes was going into my garage and I knew that I wouldn't be able to park my car in my garage until I could unpack the boxes. The crew insisted on stacking the boxes in such a way that I could still park in the garage! I didn't ask them to do this extra work but they did it anyway, and they were suffering from such cold temperatures. We used them for a move from Bloomington to Chicago. We were looking for a company that could do a split move, meaning we did not need a whole truck so combining our move with someone who required a stop along the way. I was willing to part with my things a few days early so that they could load the truck with the other delivery and deliver it before mine. By doing this they were able to give me a lower price. This is my fourth move in the last year--as I am beginning a bicoastal job. The movers with a Better Way Moving were by far the most thorough and careful with my belongings. They were meticulous taking inventory of my belongings and wrapped everything up. They were early as we packed up and unloaded and called to let me know when they were arriving. They also called to update me on the status of the move when they were making the other delivery. Chris and Marcus were the two movers who delivered my things in Chicago. They were on a very tight time schedule getting from the first delivery to my delivery. Despite being caught in a two hour traffic jam they made it on time. They were a joy to work with, had a great sense of humor, and made the pain of moving so much less painful. The company was upfront about all the costs and there were no surprises. We recently moved from Bloomington to Fort Wayne. This was our 4th major move hiring pros to pack and load. We've also had a few smaller moves where we've hired movers just to move the big items. The guys arrived on time. It was March (winter), so cold and wet in Bloomington. I was disappointed that the movers didn't put any runners down to protect the floors. Luckily, I had planned an extra day to get the house cleaned before closing. We had packers the first day, but they didn't finish everything. Finished packing on second day, with movers loading, but felt kinda rushed at the end of the day. Our stuff went into storage for a week or so until we got keys to the new house. They arrived on a Saturday to unload. This is what my husband wrote to them: Saturday's move in went well with one exception: The Indiana University football semi-trailer. As a Purdue graduate, I feel that all my worldly belongings have been contaminated by the residual odor of sweaty IU football players. The mere thought is making me queasy. I am now getting estimates for whole house tent fumigation. A Tippecanoe County company uses Boiler Gold Ale from People's Brewing Company to restore class and integrity to any soiled property. sigh Guys on the job were very polite and most helpful in putting things in the right rooms. We marveled at the hustle your crew showed throughout the day. It was exhausting just to watch. Thanks so much for making this all happen. During unpacking we discovered a glass shelf chipped and a nightstand missing. They promptly paid for those two items. Our belongings are a bit more bruised, but that could be from the wear and tear of moving 4 or more times. read more

We used this company to move from Indiana to Florida with the express expectation that our furniture was not to be moved from spot to spot or stored - we were told pick up on Monday and deliver on Saturday. This was the ONLY reason we chose them. They arrived at the home on time Monday morning - there was not blankets or padding used to protect the furniture - the lead left his clipboard laying around the house while he was doing something else. I made sure that the house was empty when they left with our items. I got a call later that day with the weight and final cost and they then told me that they were going to store and move our belongings and we would not get delivery for a full 10 days past the date they gave us when they quoted. There was NO communication from A Better Way Moving at all until 14 days after they picked up our belongings to schedule the delivery. At the time of delivery - the truck driver ( not a Better Way employee) and two local hired hands ( not Better Way employees) brought items into the house. My kitchen island had gotten wet, the casters had broken off and the bottom warped - now useless. There are water marks on the bedroom dresser - there is a gouge in our wooden trunk, the bookcases are scratched and look horrible. The men who moved the stuff in the house ( no cards, no id, no uniform) said, "looks like YOU got this wet" HOW? I looked through our boxes and said there are some missing - the driver said that he doesn't do inventory of stuff - he just drives the truck - there were no more of our items in the truck. I contacted A Better Way moving and let them know that there were 7 boxes missing - this was unacceptable! What Happened? Can they let me know how many times, where , when and who was in charge of the inventory when the items were moved from place to place over the 2 week period. they ignored this - We wrote to them - asked the same questions - they ignored that as well. They are NOT interested in the loss, damage, destruction and overall poor customer service they provided us. DON"T USE THIS COMPANY We are devastated by the loss of so much of our lives' collection and history due to what appears to be their carelessness. I am still waiting and it appears there has been no attempt on their part to resolve this. read more

Well, I guess I didn't just sell all my stuff on Craigslist...December comes and it's time to move the rest of my stuff from Indiana to Texas. After searching and searching decided to stick with the devil I know. Had a pretty small load, less than 2,000 lbs, and their estimate seemed good. We were driving from out of town to meet them at the old apartment when they called and said they couldn't because there was snow and there was no place for them to park the truck. When we got there the roads and sidewalks were clear and bone dry...called Randy and told them we needed a crew ASAP because we're leaving for Texas that night. Few hours later he gets a crew to us. Auspicious start. Two man crew had our belongings packed lickity-split. See you in a few weeks, right? Nope. Three weeks go by, I call for status...no loads heading our way, we'll be in touch. Two more weeks go by and I don't hear a thing. Call them back. Same story. This goes on and on. Two and a half months go by before my stuff finally arrives. To add insult to injury, two boxes end up missing, and we've seemed to have been gifted someone else's laundry hamper. And a set of book shelves were obviously not rewrapped between their long sojourn in their warehouse to being put back on a truck to Texas, one side was completely scratched up from the truck floor. Dudes offloading just put it down on the damaged side, I guess hoping we'd never pick it up again and notice? I'll begrudgedly give them credit for quickly settling and giving us a claim check (airquotes) higher than what was technically owed us by the amount per pound insurance system...but a competent wrapping of our stuff would have made that gesture unnecessary. So if I'm willing to blow some cash I might use them for a direct point to point move, or if I'm only moving local. Use them for a consolidated move?...not in a million years. read more

I hired A Better Way moving and storage to move things from my one-bedroom apartment, into their storage facility, and (some five days later) into my new apartment. They called the day before to confirm the moving times, and were prompt and on-time to move my belongings out. They were thorough in cataloging my things (for storage). The prices were reasonable (around $150 for three men and 45 minutes: this move was out of my apartment and into a storage locker). My move-in, similarly priced, was also equally good. The movers were, again, courteous and professional. They called to let me know they were running a bit late, and had me moved in quickly and efficiently. From their professionalism, to their communication to going way above and beyond in ensuring my complete satisfaction. I absolutely have nothing but praises to sing about my experience with them. I just completed the move of my 3 bedroom home in Florida to Illinois. I have never before attempted such a monstrosity of a move and was overwhelmed with what a task I anticipated it being, especially after some of the horror stories I read online from people in regards to the moving companies they contracted. From the very beginning, the communication with this company was most excellent. The truck driver was extremely friendly and accommodating to my needs on the pick up time. The crew they had contracted for the loading of my belongings were absolutely fantastic. They were incredibly courteous, very upbeat and fun to be around and extremely hard working. While in transit, the driver contacted me to let me know the status of delivery and the actual weight/estimated cost of the shipment. The contents were in superb shape with no damage. Again, the unloading crew was unbelievably friendly and helpful in ensuring everything was unloaded to the appropriate room and with great care, once again going above and beyond what i would have ever expected them to do to make sure i was completely happy. I truly felt like these folks took an enormous amount of pride in their work and their concern for my happiness was evident from the very first minute I met them. Frankly, I wish they all lived right around the corner from me as I would be very blessed to have any of these folks as neighbors and friends. This company was worth every single last cent and then some. They took measures to help save me money during the move and in my opinion they were incredibly reasonably priced, especially considering the awesome quality of service. I had the chance to use A Better Way Moving company, two times, the first one was a local move in Bloomington, IN I was so satisfied with the service that I decided to use them again when moving back home in San Francisco, CA. The packing people were very efficient, as well as the movers that load and unload the truck. My only complaint, is communication, the administration should have a better communication with customers, specially if your belongings are going to be taking more time than expected. Besides that the Movers, Drivers and Packers at Better Way are very good, efficient and professional. I definitively recommend them for local moves or around Indiana, but not for an across country unless your belongings fill up the truck, rather use a company that has more demand for long hauls. I hired two guys to load our two bedroom apartment worth of stuff onto a rental truck. They showed up on time, to the minute. Everything was exceptionally well packed--almost to a fault. We kept running out of furniture pads. Both men were very polite and thoughtful--they even asked permission to take a five minute break in the 90+ degree heat----appreciated, since they're paid by the hour, of course. We just arrived at our new place today, and the contents of the truck are all in great condition. read more

We moved from Eastern Oklahoma all the way to Western Oregon! This company really made our move great. We hired them through a broker company- Budget Van Lines. I was nervous about it but it was cheaper than PODS, easier than UHaul. Jake, our mover, called to confirm that he was our mover and to set up a date and time that would be good to come by. On the day of the move he was running late but was sure to text me to let me know and he arrived exactly when he said he would (which was only half an hour after our original time). He was very nice and got all of our stuff marked and packed onto the truck quickly. He didn't mind that I found a few things to add on either. He just added it to our inventory list and had it packed with the rest. He was very clear going over the paperwork and the costs, explaining where he was going and how long it would take to get to our new home. Our stuff arrived only a couple days after we did (I think it was one week after the truck came to our old house). Everything was unpacked off the truck quickly and Jake was very kind to wait for us while we tried to get cash out to pay him (our card was temporarily locked for fraud protection since we were trying to withdraw so much in a new state- oops!) The bottom stand to our TV was broken in transit and Jake very kindly bought us a new one from his own Amazon account and had it shipped with two day shipping. He even texted us two days later to make sure the stand had arrived and that it fit our TV. I was floored, he didn't have to do that at all. Jake was exceptional and if we ever decide to move again I would hire this company in a heartbeat! read more

On the actual day of the move they were right on time and were EXTREMELY fast. I had them load all of my stuff into a U-Box and I was amazed that they were able to fit everything in it. I hired A Better Way for an in-town move. Price, communication, timeliness were all great, and most of my household goods, including several boxes of china and breakables, made the trip unscathed. A couple of problems with some of my nicer pieces of furniture are the reason for the lower rating, though. First, the movers broke a leg off a piece of the sectional. It's about 50 years old, but rather nice (not ikea-cheap). It's not a large piece, it was fine before the move, and broken afterward -- there's no reason for breakage except carelessness. Not good. Second, they left grimy fingerprints and sweat marks on a light-colored leather chair. I understand that people sweat when it's 85 and humid, but honestly, they could and should have wrapped the chair and/or wiped it off when they delivered it. Overall ok, but not the company to call if you have really nice stuff. read more

These guys are amazing. They moved me 3 times! The first move I hired a small contractor for a pod. A Better Way agreed to take the pod and store it for me until I arrived. They were super friendly and very affordable for their storage fees. The next move was from one side of town to the other, including a few months of storage. They continued to follow up with me through the entire process and were able to always handle my times of pick up and delivery. They even remembered me from the first move and are super friendly. The last move was from Indiana to NYC. Since I didn't have a location in NYC yet, they stored my stuff. In order to save me a ton of money, they put my stuff in with another load and when it arrived, they had wrapped all the damageable items very well and the moving boxes were not damaged at all. These guys are amazing and I would recommend them anytime. I had no problems with the communication and they are super affordable and friendly. We used A Better Way to move. They stored our items before delivering them to us. The packing was very poor at best with numerous broken items. We are missing so much it is sickening. We got reimbursed for the broken items but not even close did we get reimbursed for the missing items. I highly recommend you verify every tag and the items they have listed as being in each box. Also inventory and verify each tag as they are delivered. I have moved over 8 times and this is by far the worst we have experienced of any move. The reimbursement for the lost items was as if they were doing us a favor. To say the least we are very disappointed with them. read more

Stay the heck away! I hired "A Better Way Moving and Storage" to move me from Bloomington, to another state. I had them pack up my belongings at my Indiana home, store them until a found a place to live in my new location, and then drive my items to me so that I could move into my new location. Besides the stress that they caused in trying to finally get my items back, once I received them, I came to realize that I had a few items STOLEN from my dresser and night stand. Once I called to complain and file a police report, nothing could be done because I had zero proof that they did anything wrong. The manager (Randy) of course took his employees side. It is just weird because over the course of a month, from the time that my belongings were moved our of my Bloomington residence, and brought to me across the state lines, I had items missing. I know that "A Better Way Moving Company" does not hire magicians, but clearly and obviously theives. If you want to keep your belongings, avoid this company. read more

I've used their service for housing moves several times over the last 15 or so years (including one out of state), and have also used them for moving a business more than once.
