Very rude shop owner that was untruthful about carrying certain kinds of keys, so he could coax me into his shop. He later lied again, told me they don't exist & I have to have him make it. Update: found my key first try $6 online. Check out House of Antique Hardware. I just called this location & the owner picked up. I asked if he carried old dresser keys to test on a lock I could bring in. He told me I could bring it in, but it was unlikely since all these locks are specific to the dresser & must be made(later learned he didn't carry any of these keys at all). I mentioned that with research & reading about other people's experience, I had learned that although that was true for some locks, many fit to some standard keys that some locksmiths carry. He sarcastically mentioned over me that he would love it if that were true & wants to know where to get them. Thinking I was being helpful I mentioned where I was able to find sets (real keys, not props or trinkets), but just didn't want to purchase them all, since there were a lot. He immediately started to talk condicendingly about his life long experience & how he knows better than I, for such a length I had to interrupt to avoid the abusive tone & try to get the conversation back on track . He hung up on me. I never used a tone of upset or offended, but was inquisitive & tried to be helpful when he expressed interest in where he may find the standard keys. It's evident he just wants to profit from having his expert opinion force that a new key is made, instead of helping people have a more economical option if available. In short, he lied to try and coax me in & he was rude from the start. read more

I don't usually write reviews but I want to make sure this shop gets the recognition it deserves. They were meticulous about their workmanship and so respectful. They even put their money in the parking meter so I wouldn't get a ticket. I truly felt like I was important to them. I called many locksmiths to see if they could cut and program a car key for me and they all said no and that I had to go to the dealership who wanted 4x the price and would need to leave my car all day. This shop did it in an hour. I was prepared to get there and for them to say they really couldn't do it after all since everyone I spoke to said it's too complicated. I highly recommend Long's Locksmiths. They are responsive, reasonably priced, and do great work. I had an old door lock malfunctioning and they were able to do the intricate work to repair it. Tom even found and fixed a problem with another lock that had been mangled by another locksmith a few weeks earlier. I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of which my first visit to a locksmith went, and this was due in no small part to the professionalism and friendliness of the staff (yay, go Tom!). My car key was in serious need of replacing and it only got worse as I continually put off the task. When I finally did make the trip, though, I realized just how damaged the key really was. At first the duplicate key refused to work properly (it got me into the car, but wouldn't insert into the ignition or trunk). Afterwards, I paid for a second key that also failed. I ended up taking the car with me (found close enough parking just off of University) where Tom kindly moved his van and proceeded to burn through many, many blanks (my original old copy-of-a-copy key was just janky enough I guess). Eventually the key cooperated with the machine and allowed a proper copy to be made. Some extra filing and lubricating later and I had 2 new and working car keys. Tom's dedication is hands down 5 stars as he went through about 5 blanks, but I was a bit annoyed with how long it was taking to get the key done, coupled with the fact that I had to come back with the car. Regardless, Long's is the place I will go to for all my future key needs! read more

This one-man operation (at the time of this review) provided great, honest service at a fair and reasonable price. I have a club-like device on my car, and though I have the key and a new spare, I could not remove the lock from the car, obviously therefore, preventing me from driving my car. The owner of the shop, Tom, was easy to get a hold of by phone and was prompt in the estimate of his arrival. Friendly and willing to share his knowledge, he had the lock off without having to cut it within a short time after diagnosing the problem. Tom deserves the five-stars that he has received to date. These guys know their stiff. O brought 2 antique locks to them to have keys made-Ine was from Germany and the other from Japan. He worked on it till he had them made-It was a joy to watch him figure it out as neither were easy, and now these antiques have keys for the locks. A very peculiar experience. Referred by a locksmith in my neighborhood, I dialed the number they gave me and that was disconnected. I looked up the Web site for AC Lock on my phone and called the number there. Mailbox was full. I found another number, and someone answered, "hello?" He cut me off, then called me back. "You looking for a locksmith?" I told him yes, I needed a key made for my car. He said he would have his "technician" call me back right away. No call, so an hour or so later I looked up the Web site from my computer at work, and dialed a local number, reaching what sounded like the boss, or sole practitioner. He explained that he was out in the field and I should call again in the afternoon so he could look things up on the computer in the shop. "One p.m. OK?" "Better make it more like two." I called at three, and he said he was not finished in the field yet - "that's how it goes some days." I said sure; when would be good? "Maybe tomorrow." "Sure, when should I call?" "I have no idea." I then suggested that he call me when it was convenient for him. "I'm not going to do that. You enjoy your job and Merry Christmas. 'Bye." Maybe there's a reason this guy is in business. Maybe there's a reason some people don't or can't work for others. Maybe I'll look elsewhere for help. read more

I made a Yelp account just to write a review for this place! I lost my keys at work (smooth move, yes) and called Long's. They came quickly, but my car is an older truck that had a pretty worn ignition that turned out to be very difficult to work with. Tom worked on making the key at his shop long after they had closed, and had to rebuild the ignition. It now works better than it ever did, and the price was great! The shop itself is wonderful, and they are very friendly and professional. They really care about their work and pleasing the customer. Thanks for the great service! read more

Negative 40 stars. Long story short. After three days of promises, excuses and crises, Tom Appel (also of 'Keys for Cars') left me and my car on the street after yelling at me of all the favors he had done for me. He took the copy of my car key with him and then he continued to call me threatening to come back to me and my car. Now, he can break into my car easily. He knows my name, where I live and what my car looks like etc. I changed my phone number, got a house alarm system, new e-mail address and a stun gun. I am especially worried for other of his female customers. Please be careful. read more

I would not recommend working with this locksmith. The short version of a long story is that it took several phone calls to get a return call; then we finally set up an appointment; then I called asking to move up the appointment time and he agreed; then he didn't show at the time we'd agreed to; and then he was rude to me on the phone, hung up on me, and then actually called back to scold me for being rude! So, for what it's worth, I spend more than a week negotiating to pay this man to change our locks on our house and wasted a morning off work waiting around for him and he never showed. Cut and programmed a car key for my Lexus and gave me a dummy copy to access the car. If the service and extras weren't great enough the price was unheard of. Lexus wanted 195 to cut the key. Then they said they would charge 65 to program it. 260 dollars !!!!!!!!! I was charged 25 dollars at Long's. I shopped around too AutoLocksmith and other Berkeley competitors wanted around 100 dollars. This sort of fair pricing, honest business practice and genuine care for the customers will have me make my way back to Long's for any key needs. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE With the Owner......Gave him Three separate opportunities to help rectify the situation. All to no avail.... Treated rudely and CURT. No sense of perfectionism. This is for a $289 Key mind you. Went there 3 times to get this key made. Waited an hour all three times. Which is fine, I understand it is a process. They had to order the key, which is also fine. But the times (Two Total) I called to set up an appointment to pick up the key. The owner Was "EXTREMELY" Condescending and RUDE. I was as nice as I could be with him. Still He felt it was a point to try and talk down to me with as much disrespect as possible. Mike and the owners son are AWESOME!!! but that owner/manager .... Called at 4:30 pm on Thursday and Tom showed up at 8 am on Friday to repair our ancient Baldwin front door lock set. He needed to order a part to replace a broken one, and a week later was back in the early morning to finish the repair. My neighbor was locked out of her apartment at 10pm, and our landlord wasn't answering -- bummer! Long's Locksmiths quoted a flat $125 for the late-night callout. All in all, pretty reasonable. Showed up about 20 minutes later with his wife/girlfriend/ladyfriend and the most adorable small white dog (their "protection"... seriously though, I think this dog had a better chance at defeating would-be assailants with adorableness). The person that answers the phone is very rude I called looking for service and he would just speak over me the whole time told me if you want to speak with my voicemail or email you can but I don't have all day to sit here and talk to you as I was trying to explain what type of service I needed, i sent him an email gave him roughly 4 hrs to cool down said maybe he was really busy let me try him later I asked him if he received my email then lies saying he came looked at it and needed parts when he never once followed up to tell me he could assist me and never came his phone was cutting out let him know I couldn't hear him he then got frustrated and started talking over me I questioned if this was the way he spoke with all his customers who he FORGETS is what makes his company a company, he told me well if you don't like it look so where else "BYE BYE" RUDE. RUDE. RUDE. RUDE. People that do not know how to run their companies. i don't know if this guy is going thru some personal issues but may God bless him he seems to be such a dark angry person. The seemingly old-fashioned lock on our back door broke down on Christmas Eve of 2021, which was on a Friday. What a bummer! I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to fix it the day after Christmas. Foiled, I called Tom Appel at A C Lock on Monday morning and left a message. He responded to my call almost immediately. He patiently assessed the problem over the phone, dealt with a customer, and then quickly drove to my house. In no time he fixed the door lock and tossed in a car key repair job for me in the most understanding and courteous style. The guy really stretched to accommodate and help. I wish to recommend him highly with a five star rating. Oh yes, I might add that he has 32 years of experience as a locksmith. Called in to get a quote to have 2 keys cut and programmed for my Lexus since I only had a valet key. The associate mentioned they were able to cut the keys as well as had the proper software to program the remotes. Long's was so great. This was the 2nd time I called them after I got locked out :o The previous technician who came out was great and today it was the owner himself, Tom. Each time they came within 10 minutes and the job was completed in no time. Efficient and friendly service that I would definitely recommend if you are in a fix. They accept credit cards via square so the entire process was completed in a flash. This guy is never in front, has you call first, then puts you in hold for no reason just to make you feel like begging for service, then he gives you a reasonable quote but when it comes to doing the job, he doubles the rate he quoted. ( with me he quoted $75 and it was less than the 100 elsewhere quoted me but then he raised it to $150) and then he uses a bogus sick mother or hungry children to justify his rates. Accused me of attempt to take food out of his children for asking why he raised the $75 quote to $150. So i went to the well establiahed and amazing service, had fiven me a $100 quote and when i asked if they could give me a discount because i really needed the money for other important things, they gave it to me for $80 and what a quick and professiinal service which was also friendly! My 5th time at REX KEYS was as good as always, friendly and professional. The REX KEYS locksmith on University Avenue in Berkeley are true locksmith magician, unlike this bozo at the AC Locksmith. He uses his angry and frustrated facw to manipulate you into accepting his outrageous offers. Don't fall into that trap! read more

Granted I've not been to this locksmith yet, but I plan to go. I spoke to Tom at Long's, and can save a lot of money by going here. I need a copy of my computer chipped car key. It costs $250 at the Mazda dealership. He will charge me around $95 for a key. A much better deal! He sounds very knowledgeable and friendly on the phone. Apparently they have a ton of equipment for copying all types of keys. Based on my initial impression of Long's Locksmiths, they get 5 stars.
