Due to winter weather, our backyard fence and gate were in dire need of an update. Apparently, so was everyone else's in Campbell as it took almost 2 months for ACA to come out for an estimate. They are a smal business that delivers better than normal results, and so they have a full dance card. And while their office correspondence is very friendly and helpful, turnaround can take a while since I believe there's only one office staff. But in the end, we got a beautiful, long lasting fence. Worth the wait! Deeper than typical posts, mounded cement to prevent rot, and screws instead of nails. All that adds up to a very solid fence. The team lead, I regret I missed his name, has over 30 years experience and is a marvel to watch work. 65' of fence and a 10' gate done in two days. Will certainly use again. read more

I've had the opportunity to observe Chris and his team complete 4 different fencing projects now - one for my two closest neighbors, which prompted me to pursue replacement of a section of fence between us and our neighbor. I was so happy with the quality and value of our new fence that I retained Chris/ACA for a major fence repair at my mother's house (9 failing posts needed buddy posts, but thanks to skillful work by ACA none of the planks needed replacing). I didn't think twice before contacting Chris when I had a problem with a different section of fence at our house. Chris went out of his way to install buddy posts where the existing post bases had rotted out, even though he had to jackhammer out a section of the concrete pad in the tiny space between the shed and the fence in order to dig the shaft for the new post and place the piling correctly. Backbreaking labor, time constraints and difficult problems that would have had a lesser craftsman refuse the job - nothing stopped Chris from doing the job skillfully, perfectly and for a very reasonable price. ACA gave us comparable pricing on their quotes, but even if there price was the highest, the quality of their work far outshines that of the other fencing contractors I've had to work with for my mom's place, for our house and for a rental property. I would think myself a fool for considering anybody else for a fencing job now. ACA is a small business and they are very busy with jobs, so plan ahead and ask for your quote far enough in advance that a slight wait doesn't affect your job. If you want good value and long lasting build quality, you'll be able to be patient enough to get into Chris' schedule and you'll be so glad that you did! read more

We had an 85' fence installed by A Cut Above. First of all, Chris was fantastic. When I texted him, he texted me back. When I called him, he called me back. As to the fence, the finished product is gorgeous. It is 7' with triple lattice and 4x6 posts. I know it's just a fence, but it is really beautiful. My neighbors are so envious. The crew was polite, they were on time, and when they were done, my yard was immaculate. They cleaned up as if they were never there. Chris' price was right in the middle and I could not be happier. I did the usual research and settled on A Cut Above Fence and Deck based upon some past reviews and being a member of the BBB. Chris was very professional, on time and on budget. Surprisingly, they were very quiet during the whole installation process. They are very thorough, detailed and install fences in the correct way. Chris did a great job on our good neighbor fence. He uses SCREWS and not nails that can pull out. Our job was particularly hard, as he had to struggle with ivy growing over from the neighbor's side of the fence. He had to do some chiseling away of the concrete walkway as well. A couple of the boards had split after the new fences and gates were installed, so I called Chris who promptly came back and replaced them. He is a little difficult to get ahold of though. You'll get the answering machine but give it a week and you'll get a call back. read more

I have a fence installed by another company that was leaning at quite an angle into my neighbor's yard. Chris fixed it completely by pouring a deeper level of cement and resetting the post. Our side yard fence was starting to rot and fall apart, which was a problem for us as that fence keeps our dogs from getting out to the street. Luckily we had worked with Chris on replacing our front fence, so when the side fence needed to be replaced we went back to him. We recently had a good neighbor fence built. Our neighbor set up all the arrangements, but as to the fence it is a great looking fence. I met Chris, who asked if I has any concerns. Today, I called around 940am, leaving a message reminding the company of the estimate. My time is valuable. I haven't received a call back and nobody showed up to give me an estimate. It is 1130am This irresponsibility tells me the company isn't detailed oriented and show no respect for possible potential customers. Previous to this job, I had Sierra Lumber do a major fence install. They did a good job, but broke my sprinkler system (which they said they would repair, but never did). I contacted A cut above and Chris came out to give me a quote. Very reasonable prices and will to work with a budget. On the day of the actual job, Chris and one other worker and completed the job in a day! The quality of work was terrific. He uses screws instead of nails, so if a board becomes damaged its very easy to replace. Overall the fence looks better than the one I had Sierra Lumber and I wish i went with A Cut Above for my last project. They did a great job on the fence installation. But when the gate broke on a very windy day it was virtually impossible to get ahold of anyone. I understand there is a lot going on right now. But it took over 5 calls & texts to get them to respond and come out to give an estimate for repair. They told us to make an appointment for the repair and again took over 5 calls and texts to get a call back. I missed their one return call...and over 3 texts and 2 calls later no response. Texted them today to let them know we went with another company for the repair. Got a response then :/ But not a helpful one and no apology. Even though from needing the repair to now, this has been going on for over a month and a half. That's how long we have been trying to get a repair set up with them. Needed a wood fence replaced at my son's home in San Jose. Left a voice mail on 4/7/14 at 2:19pm and as of 4/22/14 have not had a response. This is the second fence company that did not return phone calls. Subsequently a 3rd did not respond to a voice mail. The owner Chris has been extremely responsive to what was apparently an error, and has offered to do whatever is necessary to correct the mistake. Based on his high Yelp ratings, and in light of his efforts, I can only assume that he runs a 5 star company, as most do not care enough to follow up with their customer's negative comments. Based on this and the fact that I moved on to another vendor and did not use them for the actual fence replacement, I am unable to provide a 5 star review. I have therefore upgraded my review from 1 to 4 stars. If you are in need of a top rated fence company I would not feel bad suggesting this company. read more

I contacted Chris to put in a small fence to act as a blind in front of my Central Air compressor (city code requires it). It was amazing! he came out and gave me a quote both for the blind alone, as well as for fencing in the front yard. He was very nice and the pricing seemed quite reasonable. I ended up just getting the blind put in because I'm having some other yard work done in near future, but I will have him come back to put in the front yard fence soon! I first worked with A Cut Above Fence & Deck over 3 years ago to get an estimate on a custom RV parking enclosure fence I had in mind. During that time, Tessie was always the person I spoke with on the phone, while Chris did the estimate and consultation. I called them in the wake of our winter storms after our fence had blown down, when everyone was calling them. Tessie was straight with me from the beginning, managing my expectations. Clearly proud of the work he and his team deliver, Chris took time with me to explain how he differentiates ACA's work from others.
