Don Anderson and his crew replaced 75 feet of a shared fence with my neighbor that I had never met. They had a quote which was about 200.00 higher than The Fence Man. They scheduled us within a week. Our fence blew down in a storm in early 2023. It was a shared fence with our neighbor and we decided to hire The Fence Man. The wait was long because so many other people's fences blew down at the same time, so all fence contractors were busy. We didn't mind the wait because we knew they would get to us. The whole process was smooth. Owner, Don, inspected the damage and gave us a quote. The day before the job the office confirmed our appointment. Bright and early the next morning The Fence Man's crew showed up. They were polite, professional and friendly. We were wowed by how organized and efficiently they worked together. It was obvious that these 6 men were an experienced team and knew exactly what to do. They built a beautiful, strong fence with high quality wood boards, posts and privacy lattice. At the same time, we had them do other work unrelated to the shared fence. They replaced a 3-panel section of fence in another part of our yard, as well as, replacing two separate gates. If you're counting, this made 4 separate jobs in 4 separate places in our yard. We watched two men take apart and remove the shared fence, one man take apart and remove gate #1, two men bring in new material and one man take apart and remove gate #2. Talk about efficient! We could tell this crew wanted to be here. They were whistling to themselves and quietly communicating, so they wouldn't bother the neighbors so early in the morning. The quality of their craftsmanship and the quality of the materials they used impressed us. They were true professionals. Our side fences gave way during the wind storm in late May. One of my neighbors had used The Fence Man for one side of her fences and recommended him for our shared fence. The neighbor on the other side of my yard asked me to try another company, which I did, but got no reply. So, the three house decided to go with The Fence Man. The price for the fences seemed ok - a bit high, to be honest - but with so many fences down, resonable. We had to wait a few weeks to get the work done, which was ok. The fences look beautiful, which is why I gave The Fence Man three stars. But, the mess they left behind warranted a two-star review. I wrote to Don and he replied saying he was surprised, as they always leave things better than when they arrived. And he said he had spoken with his crew. That was it! No offer to come back and clean up the mess they left in my front and backyards. As I said, the fences look great. Instead of asking The Fence Man to come back to stain our sides I hired our house painter. We trust Mario, he was almost $400 less expensive than the quote we got from Don and he did a great job. read more

called The Fence Man and spoke to Chloe about getting a quote. she scheduled a date for Don to come out and give us a quote which was reasonable for 200 feet of piano fence with curves and clear boards, and 4 x 6 post and two custom built gates. The crew showed up on time and removed and installed the new fence in two days. they even came out on a Saturday to install the two custom built gates. The next Monday they showed up to stain the fence and gates, which took about two days. The whole job was professionally done with the use of top quality materials. We are very pleased with the work we received from the crew at The Fence Man. They worked hard and fast, and they were thorough. They built us a new quality fence. We had a couple of boards that needing repairing on an older part of our fence that we weren't replacing and they were kind enough to repair them. My only negative is that they were very difficult to get a hold of initially, despite many attempts. I understand they have been very busy, since the storm earlier this year that downed many peoples fences. We waited two months to get on their schedule, but it was worth the wait. We called Don, owner of The Fence Man for a quote to replace our backyard fence. He responded quickly and we had a quote within an hour. We wanted a horizontal fence and he showed us many pictures of his work. We found exactly what we had in mind. The work started the next week and demolition of the old fence went quickly and smoothly, We really liked the crew, Alex, Mario, Santiago and Jesus. Very friendly and accommodating. Mario, the main builder, made many suggestions to improve the look of the design. We are so grateful because it looks better than we imagined. The hog wire fence that Don's team built is a piece of art. They provide top quality materials and workmanship. I chose him because I saw the hog wire fences that he built for two of my neighbors. The foreman, Mario is an expert with almost 20 years of experience. He patiently listened to some of my concerns, and came up with great suggestions. He even spent time explaining his suggestions to make sure that I understand what I am getting. I felt very lucky to have Mario as my project foreman, and couldn't be happier with the end results. Don and his office staff were quick in response when I asked for a free estimate, and request adjustments to quote due to several project revisions on my end. I wish all service people could be as great as The Fence Man. Responsive, come on time, finish on time, reasonable prices, family run and both Don and Alex are fantastic to deal with. We have a lot of fence and we've used them to repair different sections over the years. Recently we had a gate that wasn't latching quite right. When I recommend a commercial business or service provider, (or do NOT) I tend to praise in public and complain in private, giving the owner or employee a chance to correct problems. I will not blast away before giving them a chance to correct any issues. So, yes, my reviews all seem hyperbolic and maybe people don't take me seriously since I rave about everything! I just don't review "bad" companies as a rule. (A winery on Trip Advisor being the exception... ... ...) So in all seriousness, I think this guy does excellent work and picks good employees who pay attention to detail as well as work quickly and efficiently. Full disclosure: I'd rather it be done well vs. done cheaply or quickly. And busy people, for whom you have to wait, are usually WORTH that wait, right? I lost great sections of my fence in the rains and storms of early 2023. It took until early August to get on Don's schedule, but it was worth it. Three properties in a row were done on my street, and work began on all of them at the same time. It was hot and dirty work, but done very quickly and thoroughly. The gentleman who seemed to be the lead worker (Narciso) was polite and kind. His crew (including Ángel and Alejandro) were also gentlemen and very efficient. The design of the fence was a huge improvement over the "tract fence" that I had. It is taller, and the posts are cemented into the ground at intervals. I had a gap under the fence before, and Thumper and Rocky Raccoon and everyone's cats used to come and party with me. The new fence touches the ground and is slightly higher, so more privacy. My gates don't drag on the ground. The wood is beautiful and even smells nice. My neighbor got ahold of Don the same week of the storm, and I got a quote on the spot so that I could negotiate with my insurance company. When all three neighbors decided to use this business, Don adjusted each quote to divide the cost of side fences between the two neighbors. His quote was very detailed and listed the price for each section with measurements (sides, back, front) and gave clear pricing for upgrades like "clear boards" (no knotholes, etc.) This made it possible to get a settlement from my insurance company without any hassle. He made suggestions but there was no hard sell/upselling. Something that REALLY impressed me is that in my yard, there was a lot of brush and etc. to cut away, and the guys reattached creeping vines in several sections where it was possible to do so. Where a plant or bush could not be saved, they checked with me first before removing it. They placed brush and debris in my lawn recycling bins and left everything as clean as possible. (You are going to have sawdust and etc.--it's unavoidable.) I saw a lot of respect for my property as well as my privacy. They are experienced and they know what they're doing--DEFINITELY WORTH IT!!! read more

The moment I noticed this company was different was with my first interaction. My neighbor and I talked to 5 different fencing contractors. All of them were late, didn't call back, or were just plain too expensive. The Fence Man came as a referral from another close by neighbor. When I first called The Fence Man I was greeted with a warm welcome on the phone. I described what I needed and we setup a time for an estimate. We scheduled a 9am time to meet since I needed to get to work that day. Scott was on time, and very professional with us. This was quite a contrast from the 5 other fencing contractors that were various levels of late, and one didn't even show at the first scheduled meeting time. This is when I knew the Fence Man was different. They were very prompt in emailing me the bid, the pricing is very competitive, and actually came in lower then the other (inferior) contractors we met with. Once I accepted the bid they promptly called me to schedule a time to begin the job. The first day out of the gate the team was early, and ready to go. They did a great job, and I must say used top notch materials. The owner Don explained to me the difference between different materials, and the varying costs to make sure I knew what my options were. They spent the time to jack hammer all the cement out from the old posts. I've had friends in the past who have used an inferior company that just moved the posts to a different location to avoid the hard work of removing the old concrete. The remaining two days the team showed up early, and worked hard all day long. I never saw them standing around or wasting time. They consistently had their heads down working hard on building the best fence I've probably ever seen. If you're considering getting your fence done by these guys don't wait. The backyard neighbor and I had decided, since Don's quote was so reasonable, to have the company replace more than just the two posts and respective boards that had fallen over after a bad storm. They replaced fully half the fence bordering our properties. My handyman recommended The Fence Man, saying Don would probably quote a better price than he could, and for doing a longer section of fence than he would. He was right. Before I called The Fence Man, acting on my handyman's suggestion, I drove to another San Jose house to see Don's work on a front yard and deck, visible from the street. It looked very nice. After I saw Don's quote, I was thrilled. We went with all redwood components since they'll last 30 years instead of the 10 years of pressure treated equivalents. The nation's supply chain sold out of one redwood component just as we agreed on a price. We had to wait a month for those to come in. This is the second time within a few years I have had Don replace a section of fence. This time the side fence was obliterated in the recent wind storms. Don was quick to respond and came out the next morning to provide a bid. On short notice Don was able to schedule the job within a few days which was great. Mario and his crew showed up right on time at 730 am and we discussed all the details. He was very thorough and asked several questions. I felt very comfortable as I left for work. I would highly recommend you find an alternative. Don was paid by our neighbor for the job, with our intention to pay our neighbor half. Had I had any input, I could guess I would have gotten other bids to find someone who is more personable. We called Don after the fence was installed without us being home, and what a mess! Don and his crew did not clean up after themselves, one of lattice is broken and several are incomplete. Further, a definite hazard, the metal poles in the ground were cut off and not flush with the ground. It was a lazy attempt at removing them.... When we called Don and asked him to come by, he did so unwillingly and was pretty...rude. My husband told him the cement was done haphazardly and Don replied that they are not cement guys. Okay, then don't do cement. He said he would come by the following Saturday to correct some of the issues and he couldn't give us a timeframe. We waited all day and Don never showed up, never called and we still haven't heard from him. He lives a block away. read more

There were some issues - when I got back home, I realized that the outdoor electricity outlet was not working. Also, that my shovel that was outside disappeared. Because it was already late, 6:50pm, I emailed Don, the owner with my issues. He got back to me in 10 minutes! Over the course of several emails, he helped me to troubleshoot the issue + brought back the shovel that his crew mistakenly took with them the very next day in the morning.
