This market is my go to for Southeast Asian ingredients. We love the fresh made Banh Mei sandwiches and Bao buns. I don't expect a supermarket to be super clean but presentation should be important. I feel like when you go during the day it's not busy but not everything is available to you. Some fresh veggies or meat will arrive during the end of the week. That's the only thing I don't like. However, if you just need noodles or things to stock up the house it's fine to shop during the week. read more

Went in around 6pm, an hour before closing. Parking lot was still a little full as they shared it with the other smaller shops in the area. Went to get a shopping cart, they probably should invest in new ones. Mine had that annoying wheel click which I normally would swap out carts but decided to just go with it. Store wasn't too crowded at that time of evening. We took our time going through alb the aisles. We were there looking specifically for Japanese items and did find the Japan section. Pleasantly surprised at what they had and the relatively reasonable prices of those items. Would like to have seen more vegetables available but maybe we just came at the wrong time. Wasn't impressed with the frozen meat section, but we don't normally purchase meat so it didn't really affect us. Check out was quick and easy. read more

I've grown up going to Asian markets so I was excited to check this one out. You can tell they sell fresh fish because you get punched in the face with the smell when you walk in. This is typical for most Asian markets and it's almost nostalgic for me. On first glance, I thought this market was huge! I started on the left side and they had prepared foods, a fish market, produce section, freezer section, and everything else in between. There was everything you need to cook Asian cuisine. I even saw fermented fish, which is also called Prahok in Cambodian (Khmer). We use that for the majority of our dishes. They had dishes, bowls, Buddha's (decor), big packages of noodles, rice, etc. they even had my favorite fruit, mangosteens! But they were expensive because they're exotic fruits. On this visit, I purchased a bao bun, banh cuon, chocolate lollipop for my toddler, an Asian bowl, char siu seasoning, and Mama Tom Yum noodles. The place was busy but the lines moved fast. CONCEPT: A Dong Supermarket gathers and sells ingredients and tools used in east and southeast Asian cooking, many of which are hard to find elsewhere in the area. LOCATION: The supermarket is located in a strip mall tucked behind New Britain Avenue. The strip mall, known as Shield Street Plaza, has several other noteworthy destinations for foods that are uncommonly found in Connecticut (e.g. Coracora Peruvian restaurant, Cha Papi cafe). The supermarket interior is no frills, warehouse-like, but that is part of the charm. EXPERIENCE: A Dong Supermarket is large, with wide, bare fluorescent bulb-lit aisles devoted to different ingredients, including fish, herbs, sweets, and rice. Since the supermarket sells ingredients that are critical to many different Asian countries, A Dong Supermarket is a place for anyone to discover and try unfamiliar culinary components. While ideal place for one stop shopping for Asian ingredients, it is also an ideal destination for those looking to extend their culinary repertoire and try ingredients that are completely unfamiliar. As one example of the culinary adventure that is in store for customers, I entered to purchase fresh mint to add to a new dish I had prepared, and left with a somewhat familiar-looking mint (water mint), as well as a type that was unfamiliar (fish mint). These herbs were retrieved from a large pile of small shrink wrapped packages of herbs on a shelf. Rifling through the pile only added to the sense of coming upon a treasure chest, and will surely add a novel flavor to the dish. Similarly, a walk over to the grain aisle invited discovery of a stray package of "rhubarb rice". Had no idea what this was, but placed it in my shopping cart. Unlike when I shopped in NYC's Asian markets in the 20th century, with wider export and use of Asian ingredients today most items are at very least described in English somewhere on the label. (The store name itself is described in Vietnamese and English on the exterior entrance sign.) That said, you are still unlikely to find preparation instructions in English ... but that is part of the sense of discovery the store invites to all customers! TIPS: A Dong Supermarket is open 9 AM to 7 PM each day. Im always grateful for a trip to A Dong because of how quick I can get in and out. I'm typically stopping in for sweets and bao but I've recently been on a kimchi kick and was able to grab the biggest tub of it that I've ever seen. I see so many people with full carts whenever I go. They have a wide range of items for sure. I finally got around to go in for a visit. This market is like a superstore. This store has almost everything you may need. The isles are spaces, free from clutter and clean. Another bonus- the shelves were fully stocked. There are a variety of things to buy all in one location-from cookware to small gifts/trinkets;spices,teas and other seasonal items;fresh fish and frozen items to hot items/meals. Pricing can be confusing as some of the items did not have clearly marked signage. I was able to easily find the items I was looking for and was out in and out no time. Another bonus was the parking. Nothing ruins a potential shopping experience like hunting for parking space. There was plenty of free parking located on a surface lot in front of the market. I have shopped gee whiz here for twenty years. Still have the chills going in the store. 99% of all the packages have Chinese, Japanese or another Asian language on them! Not English. I have fun trying to ascertain what something is. I shop approximately every three months and spend $40 or so on all kinds of stuff. Everything is fresh, colorful and tasty. One of the Asian markets I frequent. It's mainly Vietnamese, but they carry pan-Asian ingredients. I'm Thai-American and cook Thai food, as well as other Asian cuisines. This is the biggest Asian supermarket in the area, so you can find most anything in Asian ingredients. For Hartford area folks who like to cook certain Asian cuisines, A Dong Supermarket is an essential source of ingredients and products. A Dong is in the Shield Street Plaza in West Hartford near places such as Shu, Pho Boston, Pho Saigon, Gastropark and WeHa Brewing and Roasting. I lack the expertise necessary to discuss the full breadth of A Dong's offerings, but even with my limited experience, I see produce, meats, seafood and frozen, packaged, jarred and bottled products used in Chinese, Korean, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese and/or similar cuisines. Your regular local grocery store may have 6 feet of shelves of Asian products. A Dong has row after row of nothing but these types of Asian Products. I recently ran out of pantry staples such as Fish Sauce, Sriracha, Sambal Oeleek, Hoison, Sweet Chili Sauce, Rice Vinegar, Thai Curries and similar products. A Dong had a wide selection of all these things. Really more than I can even process. While I was there, I also picked up a few prepared foods and produce items such as roast pork, Soy chicken, baby bok choy, mushrooms, cilantro, fresh Thai chilies and bean sprouts. Other food options include an extensive frozen food selection, Asian candy, tea and fresh and dried noodles. If you need things like pho bowls, pho spoons, knives, cooking claypots, etc., A Dong has you covered there too. Make a special trip or visit when you're in the area, but A Dong is a can't miss place if you like to cook these Asian cuisines or even if you like to explore world culture. Five Stars read more

Cool spot. Very authentic Asian grocery store selling all kinds of staples and novelties for cooking. Not as approachable as H Mart but has a similar selection. I purchased a banh mi last time and it wasn't great ergo only three stars. The banh mi barely had any filling in the inside and the bread was stale. At least it was cheap, but most of the bread made it into the garbage. Prices are a bit high for what the store offers - definitely higher than your typical H Mart. I guess they know they're the only Asian grocery store so they feel like they can charge what they want. Overall worth a visit at least once. read more

I've become a regular at A Dong since my first review in 2013. I notice many people spouting very entitled, classist rhetoric about how the grocery store should change. I don't want a remodel that will force the store to again have to bump up prices to pay for it. I know A Dong has had to raise prices on some things due to inflation (I don't fault them for that) and I would much prefer the building keep its personality and lower prices than simply look up to date to please rich people who are not paying for it and don't care about the consequences to others for having to pay for it. They don't care because they don't feel it. They just want it to smell Westernized and look more like Target. THEN GO TO TARGET. A Dong a great spot. Don't let image deter you from the quality they offer. I prefer higher quality produce and goods than new floors. The floors work just fine! Never gets old coming here. About 1x per month I get my fix of frozen soup dumplings, gyoza, and a prepared small box of duck OR crispy pork. Always must refresh on some noodles. I will say that there's some national shortage of SAMBAL and chili garlic because the shelves were WIPED clean of all! And unavailable at stop and shop or Whole Foods. I've been at A Dong since a babe and my mother has taken me here on multiple occasions. The workers are laid back and always respectful from what I've seen and the layout of the store is easy to understand if you've been once or twice. The only thing I would advise is the store doesn't look like modern supermarkets. You aren't going to get super nice aisles and clean floors. However, I love it and it feels right! The selection of food is also top notch. We love getting noodles, buns, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and snacks. read more

A Dong has a wide variety of specialty Asian products, produce and seasonal favorites. The low rating is due to its lack of care in keeping the store CLEAN. It really could use a remodel - new tile ceilings, cleaner floors and new shelves. I also shop a Je Mart in East Hartford and it is located in a run-down looking strip mall. However, inside the store - it is very CLEAN and neat. Floors, shelves are clean, nicely organized--it reflects care and pride in their business. I don't get that feeling when shopping at A Dong. All other Asian stores (H Marts in the country) are also very clean. I would LOVE to give A Dong 5 stars for the variety of specialty products but I can't - the lack of care in keeping their business clean is of concern. read more

Large Asian market. I went there to buy roast duck. Got a half duck for $14.50. It was nicely cut up and packaged for me. I was pretty happy with the price and it looked good in the package. Got home and discovered that at least half of the weight was skin, fat, and bones. The actual duck meat was about 3/4 of a pound. read more

A Dong is one of my favorite grocery stores in the area! They have an amazing assortment of vegetables and fruit that you just can't get anywhere else. I love their snack and drink sections, which allows me to try different items! I highly recommend picking up some of their pastries and bread, such as the hot dog bun and roast pork buns. A Dong Supermarket is a fantastic grocery store for all of your Asian needs. They carry a variety of products ranging from Chinese to Japanese and beyond. Their products are reasonably priced and are tight budget friendly especially with the current global situation. As of today, their shelves are mostly stocked, but there are products that they're completely out of and will not have in stock for awhile due to supply chain issues. They've raised their prices for leafy vegetables to $2.95 per lb. and are yet selling a lower grade quality of vegetables--these vegetables, like Shanghai Tips, are of a different type from what NY Chinese grocery stores sell, and don't keep well, rapidly developing chemical/pesticide spots. We need to gather and send to FDA for testing, to see if they are poisonous. When you buy leafy vegetables from them, sealed in the plastic bags, a lot of such is loose or loosened leaves, and it you buy 5 lbs., easily 2 lbs. or more would be loose or falling off and cannot be stored. Hopefully they will be getting some competition soon from a large Chinese grocery store operator tapping into this lucrative market that they have to themselves. read more

I can't believe It's taken me 35 and a half years of living mainly in ct to find this place. Seriously if you've never been here before you have to go. If not to buy any of the million offerings they have then to just browse their extensive collection of Asian items. I was truly blown away by their fish market. They had fish I've heard of and never seen before up close and others that I've had but for way higher prices elsewhere. I just grabbed some soup dumplings and didn't get the chance to slowly meander through the aisles like I wanted to. When I got home I warmed up the dumplings like it said to on the package. They were just as good as some restaurants around in the area. And cheaper. So needless to say I'll be back. read more

It seems as though every Hartford Yelper I have met feels a duty and obligation to eventually make a pilgramage to A Dong. Today, it was my turn to oblige. I have to admit that I really don't know enough about the Oriental groceries, produce, and bakery items I looked at to intelligably talk about what they were. So my review is basically an account of the experience (really an experience of amazement and wonder) to stroll among the aisles and see things I had never seen before. The store is enormous, much larger than I would have imagined. The first thing we saw as we entered the doors were these hanging carcasses of roasted animals- I'm guessing pork and ducks? Pretty awesome to behold, although I would have to be pretty inebriated to consider buying any of that. The bakery section was amazing -tray after tray of items I was seeing for the first time- dessert buns, savory buns, and even buns with hot dogs. In the meat section, I saw a container of quail eggs - little bitty things with spotted shells. As we walked the meat aisle on the left wall, we heard the grind of a saw blade and the screech that could only be that blade plowing a groove through some sort of bone. I immediately envisioned some grim faced guy sawing a roast pig in half. The produce section was a cornucopia of color -things I was familiar with and things that looked like a science experiment gone amuck. Hairy peaches with seaweed sprouting out. Strange green stalks. Things I can't even begin to describe. We did see some great looking red grapes, and scooped up a few bunches. This has to be heaven for tofu and noodle lovers- I saw more permutations, combinations, and variations of both than I ever knew existed. Besides the grapes, we bought some Chocolate Mint Pocky sticks, some Chocolate Soy Milk (I love chocolate soy milk!) with Oriental lettering (bummer- it was made in California), and a Japanese box of chili cooking sauce for shrimp. The reviews I had read warned me of the strong odor in the store, and we didn't really notice that until we hit the fish counter- it was quite pungent there, but it was worth it to see the large variety of fish laid out for the customers. I'm glad I went. I think its wonderful that our Vietnamese, Korean, Laotian, Chinese, Japanese,and Cambodian friends, as well as adventuresome gourmands of every persuasion have a gigantic authentic market to go to. Seeing it for the first time was a very enjoyable experience. It was also a very humbling experience, because it reminded me how ignorant I am of the Asian cultures. read more

Very large market with wide selection of canned/jarred sauces, produce, teas, and fish/meat. We have never gotten any meat/fish because we are 2/3 vegetarian, but the vegetables are usually a good buy. There is a small section of prepared foods near the door, where you can get some cool buns and sweets. The majority of the store is filled with the dry goods, with very little organization. At least the aisles are wide and low. Things will never be in the same place the next time you come, if in stock at all. Come with an idea of what you want (noodles, sauces), wander around in the appropriate aisle for a bit, and end up buying 20 things you never knew existed but look cool. Large noodle selection, rice selection near the far wall, and a smaller, separate area of Japanese/Korean items near the far wall. There is also a few aisles with dishware and pots, knives, and assorted kitchen tools. read more

Speciality Chinese market... having lived in China for a year myself.... the smells and sights were nothing I wasn't used to already... The store is huge and sectioned of for fresh meat and produce on one side and proceeds packed food by type in the rest of the aisles. There is a minimum of $10 for credit card use but the cashier was kind enough to let me swipe my card though my bill was less than $10... i went there mainly to buy some dragon fruit (was perfectly ripe and sweet) I also bought pocky sticks in reminiscent of my childhood... I also found some bamboo picks.. for my home make dumplings or I could even repurpose them as cocktail skewers... your sure to find something you'll like or wanna try. It's quite a nice way to experience and explore other cultures without having to ever cross the ocean. read more

This place is Huge! And they have so many Asian Items I am sure you will find what you are looking for. The prices are very reasonable also. The aisles are all labeled with what you will find in them. Now this is a big plus because if you need to ask questions in English there is a bit of a language barrier. They have a cooked food area where you will see a whole roasted pigs hanging, several Ducks, Red Roast Pork Slices(great for making Pork Fried Rice) Chicken feet etc. Then there is a bakery area a Pharmacy area where you can get your White Flower oil for headaches and Tiger Balm for muscle aches. They do have and area with live fish too. Ramen Heaven section for you starving college students.
