We discovered Kaliubon Ramen randomly one afternoon while we were out on a walk and decided to stop in. I forgot to review it then, but after our visit today, I could not forget again because our waiter Miguel was so great. They have a large sushi menu along with many different ramen broth options, so there is a lot to choose from. For my gluten-free peeps, they also have a gluten-free menu, gluten-free sauces, and tamari, which I really appreciated. My partner absolutely loves bao buns, and I really enjoy the sushi here. We decided to have dinner there tonight. Rainy day perfect for a ramen. There were 9 of us. There were available seats and tables for us. We immediately ordered as we know what we all wanted. The menu was clear and easy to understand for first timers. Not me though. Been here before. I recommend the TanTan Mazemen - noodles no broth with fresh cucumber, corn, cilantro, onion, ground pork, peanuts. What an entree. Topped with fried egg. I also enjoyed the Kaliubon dumplings and my staple pork bao. The rest of the group ordered Kaliubon Ramen, chicken poke, miso ramen, and curry ramen! We all enjoyed our dinner! The place is in the busy area of blue back square. Parking is a tough one. Street parking or ramp parking. Sunday - you don't have to pay parking. The place could get very busy as they serve really good food for a reasonable price. Clean place and enough seats. We went to Kaliubon Ramen for ramen and drinks. I got the Hot and Sour Ramen which at first wasn't super spicy but towards the end it definitely had a kick. The beef was crispy but still tender and well marinated in the broth. The end was a little over done but still went well with everything overall. I also got Soju original and probably should've got the flavored version because it just tasted like watered down vodka. I have visited Kaliubon many times in the past, and every time the food does not disappoint. The flavors are always on point, the ingredients are fresh and delicious, and they offer plenty of substitutions for gluten and dairy sensitivities, including rice noodles and coconut milk. Additionally, the wait staff is very knowledgeable about what items are gluten-free. For appetizers, I'm always getting their crispy brussels sprouts that are the perfect amount of salty and acidic to prepare my taste buds for the fantastic ramen ahead. My go-to ramen is the curry ramen, and it is the perfect amount of spicy that you're looking for in a hot, filling bowl of ramen. They also have rotating special items. My favorite that I've tried was a delicious crispy salmon ramen. Aside from the food, this restaurant offers fantastic lunch specials, and the food always comes out quickly, making it a great spot to stop for a quick lunch. Based on the high marks on Yelp we had high expectations of this place. It was OK. We arrived at 2:20 p.m. and put our names in. It was Saturday and packed so we figured it must be really good. They took our cell number and said it'd be a half hour wait. Lots of booths for 2-4 guests. Not much ambience, though sitting at the bar it might be fun to watch the chefs make the ramen. We walked over to Barnes and Noble and browsed as we waited, then returned about the time our table should be ready. Our server saw us and immediately went to clean the booth for us, so far so good. He and the other servers were all polite and seemed to be rushing around to accommodate everyone, so kudos to them. Our impression was just they were severely understaffed, like 2-3 more people would've helped. We received our waters about 10 minutes in and he took our order right away. Then it was 30 more minutes to receive our 2 appetizers, fried calamari and seasoned edamame. Still no drinks (diet cokes and strawberry lemonade). The appetizers were delicious, honestly more flavorful than our ramen. We ordered tonkatsu ramen and miso ramen which came with chashu, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and a flavored boiled egg. There are so few ramen places in the area and this place is just not it. When looking at the menu, one of the options had arugula as a topping, that was a clear sign of how non-authentic this place was going to be. I got the name sake ramen and it was just as good as if I just made shin ramen at home and added a few extra toppings. The service is good and attentive, nothing over the top. I was really disappointed with my experience at this ramen spot. The ramen had an extremely earthy flavor that completely threw off the taste of the broth and made it hard to enjoy. The wings were also very bland and lacked seasoning or flavor altogether. On top of that, the spicy chili oil wasn't spicy at all and added almost nothing to the dish. We started with the pork bao bun, garlic wings, yellowtail jalapeño and the fried calamari. My favorite bite was the pork belly bao bun and the yellowtail jalapeño. My sister loved the wings. We also tried some rolls, California, Philly, salmon avocado and the blueback square special roll. We accompanied with a passion fruit tea with mango boba. Everything was delicious and I appreciated that the appetizer were brought separately giving us plenty of time to finish one to start the other as we were seated at a deuce and didn't have much room. Solid 3-star ramen place. Everything was fine, nothing to complain about, but nothing to rave about, either. The place is casual with spacious booths. My husband and I went for lunch on a snowy Saturday. We got the spring rolls, which I loved. You get two pieces. The price is a tad high for the portion size. For entrees, I got the beef ramen, and it hit the spot. I will say that for $16, I wish it had some more toppings in it. It was mainly noodles, half an egg (most places do a full egg), herbs, and slices of beef. My son had the chicken poke bowl, and it's a good decision for a child. I had the Hot and sour ramen with rice noodles and asked for an 8/10 spice level. I'm happy to say they made it based on a formula and it had a great kick, with excellent flavor. they use one drop of heat for every 2 increments in your rating. Why they don't ask 1/5 range, I'll never know. If you choose an odd number in 1/10, someone is making a judgment call for you. The others has Chicken poke bowl, Tonkotsu ramen, and Mango milk tea with no tapioca. Everyone was very happy with the food, service, and atmosphere. We will definitely go back. 3.5 stars the second time around. We got crab rangoons this time and they were ok. Very tiny and a little too overcooked. We got the same sushi order but we swapped the spicy tuna for the Philadelphia roll. The Philadelphia roll was awesome, didn't even need any dipping sauce. The shrimp tempura roll knocked it out of the park again, so perfectly savory and sweet. Unfortunately, the salmon was not as good quality in the salmon avocado roll this time, so it didn't melt in your mouth like I was expecting. I had a great time at Kaliubon tonight. We were seated promptly, the booth was cozy and clean and each table had soy sauce AND a big container of chili oil-- which was a huge plus in my eyes. The music was good, very eclectic but fun and not too loud so I could enjoy my conversation, and service was prompt and very attentive. We ordered the beef ramen and the truffle shoyu ramen and we both inhaled it-- the ramen came out hot, the broth was extremely flavorful, and the noodles were nice and chewy. With the temperatures dropping, the season for ramen is officially upon us. So I asked one of my friends in Coventry for any recommendations for ramen in Connecticut, as I'm still fairly new to the area. Kaliubon was on the top of the list. So my friend Sarra and I decided to give it a try for dinner last weekend. The first thing the two of us noticed when we walked in was the ambiance of the restaurant. The walls and ceiling boasted a bright orange and purple lighting scheme that was a surprising contrast to the soft Christmas lights outside. It looked really cool, but the orange felt a bit strong towards the back of the restaurant where we sat. Since we were both tired and just wanted food as fast as possible, we both ordered the first things we saw on the menu and completely skipped over the sushi, which I'll have to try another time. Service was quick and courteous with our orders and food came out within 5-10 minutes of ordering. The Kaliubon ramen is the restaurant's signature dish, which I wanted to try to get a feel for the restaurant. I could be a little biased because I was exhausted that night, but the ramen was phenomenal. The broth was oily and thick, slighly on the salty side, and stuck to the noodles so well. The chashu was super tender and flavorful, and the noodles were just as soft. The bowl reminded me more of a tonkotsu ramen with a different soup base, due to the same viscosity of the broth and the richness of the sides. Sarra's curry ramen was slightly on the spicy side, but was just as rich and just flavorful as the Kaliubon. Like I said, sushi wasn't in our order that night so I can't speak for the restaurants sushi quality and taste. But I firmly believe that Kaliubon was the perfect choice that night to satiate two exhausted kids after a long day of walking and shopping. I would recommend this place to fellow ramen enthusiasts and anybody who needs a good decompression meal after a long day. read more

The service is quick and the food comes out fast. This is my second time here both times for poke because I always have a taste for sushi. Today I ordered the lunch special for 17$ which is a choice of poke and appetizers. I chose the dumplings and time a poke bowl with the sushi rice. First time here and it did not disappoint. I heard about the other location and wanted to give this one a try. It's pretty busy during dinner time so made a reservation ahead of time. The service was great. The food was delicious. The appetizers that stood out the most was the bao buns and the sushi options. We went with the classic sushi types such as spicy salmon and spicy tuna and they came out perfect. The ramen was the best part though. The chicken ramen was perfect. I would definitely get that dish again. You could smell all the flavors when it arrived at the table. All the ramens were tasty and filling. I'm glad they brought a location to West Hartford. The ramen here certainly won't offend, but if you've been to any of the higher end ramen houses in larger US cities (or have been to Japan) you'll notice the depth of broth flavor here does not match. Specifically, for the tonkatsu ramen, one would generally expect an extraordinarily deep savory tone from the many hours the broth soaks in the pork bones. For an added richness, I felt an extra egg was certainly warranted (in fact, two would be even better). Everything else with the ramen was quite good. The chashu portion is generous, the various vegetables are fresh, the noodles have enough firmness. But I'm usually at a ramen house specifically for the broth and I feel that is the one part of this experience that could be a lot better. Overall, however, I think the food here is quite fresh, and if you focus more on the noodles, perhaps you'll also be very happy with the ramen itself. read more

While walking around West Hartford a few days ago, my friend was in the mood for Sushi, we stopped by Kaliubon Ramen. It's right next to The Place 2 Be. This was a really nice day for being outside, so we sat outside, they had a few outdoor tables. I saw a sign that said they offer bubble tea. We each ordered a roll of sushi. I got the California Roll, my friend got the Spicy Yellowtail. We also got bubble tea, I got the peach and my friend got the mango. Our order came out pretty quickly. The sushi was very good, fresh and flavorful. My peach bubble tea didn't taste like peach at all. It was still sweet, but there wasn't anything peachy about it. The mango was a lot more mangoy, and also really sweet. There was plenty of tapioca in both drinks, it was soft and chewy. While the bubble tea was subpar, the sushi was very good. In the future I'd skip the bubble tea at Kaliubon Ramen and just go for the sushi. read more
