It was a Sunday afternoon (8/16/20), family from NY area in-bound from a long trying visit with the elderly in-laws. Good food paramount, excellent pizza absolutely necessary for the NYC Pie Aficionados!!! Joey's to the rescue! My daughter researches the options, we debate, diverse group and even more diverse tasty"piebuds". I learned Joey's now serves a mean Detroit style pie - BAM! Dealz dun Brudda. A regular Grandma's pie, a large Gary and Mary's Garden, a Detroit Red Top pie, and last but definitely not least, a thick Detroit White "cakepie". The Detroit's are typically small square (or if you're lucky rectangular) thick crust pies, they out rival the Chicago varieties. All four pies were heavenly and graced with many compliments, especially from our four NYC pie snobs! The regular pie great. The Detroit's a completely different beast: toppings tend to be the same, the crusts thick and if done well crispy with a heavy serving of "its not good for you" oily presence. Each little square nearly bite size, but if you control yourself, two or three eye-rolling bites. The Bro-in-law and I had been spoiled by true Detroit pie at Buddy's in Detroit (search and read that review), if you're there, you have to go!!! Joey's has been a life saver during the Covid shutdown. They very quickly adapted to take out only with curbside delivery. Not only that but recently on FB they had a few contests to win some new pizza styles, the Grandma and the Detroit. I think they gave away like 30 pizzas. Starting today those pizzas are now on the menu and I'm certain I'll be trying the Detroit pizza soon. Try the calzones they're HUGE and a fantastic value. Wish it came with a salad or piece of bread. I also ordered the half chicken parm and that was not great. Looked like they left it in too long, bread was hard and chicken parm was dry, cheese was hard and the chicken wasn't seasoned. I've also tried their slice pizzas and it was ok. Really cute restaurant- small and cozy. Calamari was way too fishy and chewy for me but luckily we ordered two other things which made my review go up to 4 stars. My husband loved their eggplant fries- portions are huge. The star of the night was definitely the chicken parm grinder. Joeys to go is my number 1 go to spot for take out in west Hartford. Staff is always friendly and service outstanding. Always get the order correctly and cooked perfectly the way I like as well. Pizza is nicely thin & crisp and the Alfredo pasta is always delicious as well. my son who is a extremely picky eater will only eat take from a very very select few places loves their chicken tenders & fries. I also enjoy the Sweet Asian wings are amazing and so is the cheese steak grinder. The calzones are BIG so we were able to split one and one of us were able to eat some of the incorrect one. Within the hour, they had replied to our email with a kind message, apologizing, and making things right. Mistakes like this happen, so we completely understood and appreciated their reply. Recently visited Joey's for a quick calzone for lunch and was so pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the entire experience. My waitier was so friendly and brought me out a bowl of marinara when I asked for an extra serving of it. My calzone was piping hot, fresh and delicious. Definitely large enough for 2 meals. The sauce is made in house and was also delicious..I could have eaten it with a spoon. When I asked for a to-go container to take home my leftovers, my server brought me a fresh serving of marinara in a to-go bowl. We lived in West Hartford and have been going to Joey's for years, and before the WH location opened we enjoyed the other Joey's locations. The food is always good. Good sauce, healthy portions. Lot to love. We usually get take out and tonight was the 3-4 time over the last year in which our order the screwed up. One time it's ziti instead of spaghetti. Another time it's eggplant instead of chicken parm. Tonight I ordered a chicken parm grinder, asked for no peppers. Apparently this offended the chef as no peppers meant not sauce. A dry chicken cutlet. My wife told me to cackle, but that would mean a return trip and I was hungry and not in the mood to wait another hour to eat. The food gets 4+ stars. The service gets 0. I ate here tonight for national pizza day and the pizza did not disappoint. It was delicious and even better yet was the eggplant fries appetizer. They were covered in parmesan cheese, yum. The sauce they give on the side is really good too. My son likes the meatballs. You can't go wrong for $4.50. You get three big meatballs and they are quite tasty. Our waiter was so nice and friendly so I don't want to say anything bad about him. Joey's has some solid pizza. I usually go for the basic cheese and pepperoni, but I've also branched out to the margarita pizza and chicken ceasar salad before which are also very good. Their large pizzas are huge. The sauce tastes fresh and there is no shortage of mozzerella cheese. They have a thin crust which they get to a nice crisp. On a couple of occasions it has been a little too crisp, burnt even, but the majority of the time they get it just right. I'd say they are a little pricey; maybe a couple of bucks more than comparable places in the area. I usually just get pizza to take home so I can't speak to the sevice other than the limited interaction it takes to pay.
