A really nice small bakery in Commerce. I've driven past it several times and finally decided to check them out. They had quite a few desserts like cakes, cookies, cheesecakes to choose from. They don't have the worlds biggest selection so I'd go early in the day as it seems the run out of things often. It also seems as though they only sell certain desserts on specific days. I tried the Angel Fruit Pie, Cheesecake, Chocolate Cake & Strawberry Shortcake. Each item tasted really good, sweet, but not too sweet. After eloping in New York City, my parents graciously hosted an impromptu wedding reception for my husband and I in my childhood home. They ordered a custom cake from A'Fondant because I requested a Japanese-style strawberry shortcake since I grew up eating those (my mother is from Japan, and I went to Japan regularly as a child). For those of you that do not know, Japanese-style cakes are similar to French-style cakes in that they are not as sugary as cakes commonly found in the United States and often use fresh fruit and chocolates as toppings. So despite tasting rich and delicious, they're not as sinful as the typical cakes you might find at the grocery store. As you can see from my photo, the cake was GORGEOUS! We almost felt bad cutting into it since it was decorated so beautifully with the butter/whipped cream frosting, chocolate covered fruits, and chocolate plate (the plate says celebration for those that cannot read Japanese). The sponge was mild tasting yet flavorful and the icing was decadent without being too rich. It tasted authentically Japanese in my opinion. And despite strawberries not being in season, those tasted great too! All 20+ of my guests that came to my reception LOVED the cake and begged to take some home but it disappeared too quickly! My American and non-American family all loved it. My husband and I are still raving about it and hope to visit A'Fondant too when we're back in town. In addition to the quality of the cake, the staff were absolutely amazing. They accommodated our request in such short notice because they know how important it is to have a tasty cake when celebrating a new marriage. While other Japanese-style bakeries rejected our request because of the short notice and it was near the New Year holiday, these lovely workers really went the extra mile to make their customers happy. Though this bakery is a located in Canton away from the Japanese restaurant hub in Novi, it is absolutely worth the trip and this business deserves our support. One of my favorite places to go for cakes! I've been looking for Asian cakes/bakeries the moment I moved into the area, and this place has become one of my go-to's. I've tried most of their cakes and most, if not all, were amazing. Their strawberry cake is one of the best and last month they had a Mont Blanc cake special which was also delicious. If you get a cheesecake, make sure to get the strawberry sauce (it's only 50 cents extra). In addition to cakes, I've tried their pound cakes and cookies, which were all pretty good. The ladies who work there are also very nice. I've been forgetting to bring cash (for orders under $20), but they've been so nice about it and let me pay with credit. A tip is to call in the morning when they open and reserve a few slices that you want to try, as they run out of most of the cakes before closing. I drove over an hour to go to this place and it was so worth it. The lady who owns the place is so sweet and kind and you can tell that she runs her business with humility and kindness. I got two cheesecakes and two chocolates and they were both incredible (I personally liked the cheesecake more because I generally like cheesecakes!) even my mom who is super picky about her cake, said it was absolutely amazing. Great cake shop run by a Japanese lady. If you can't stand grocery store cake and appreciate delicious, creamy handmade cakes, and don't mind paying for it this place is for you. Their main business is custom orders so you can't just walk in and get a cake although usually they have slices available. The strawberry shortcake seems to be their specialty but they have a variety. They do weddings etc but I have no experience with that. We just go for the special occasion cakes and sometimes slices. A strawberry shortcake that feeds about 8 will set you back about $30. read more

One thing I really miss from Los Angeles is all the delicious Asian bakery goods that hit the sweet spot but was still light and fluffy. I was so happy to find this place out of the blue one day. They remind me a bit of home even if the price is a bit steeper, but it's totally worth it. I ended up getting my birthday cake here, just a regular 9 inch strawberry shortcake, which actually had more fruits on it, and it a was a complete hit with my friends. If you want to pre-order a whole cake from them they require 2 weeks notice. And if you want to come in and buy their desserts without pre-ordering, then come in from Thursday - Saturday when they have all their desserts on display. The BEST cake we have tasted ever in the US! It is hard to find authentic high-quality Japanese-European style cakes in the US, and we cannot believe that we finally could find them in this little bakery in a strip mall. We are so glad that we don't need to wait for our next trip to Japan to taste authentic Japanese-European style cakes! We accidentally discovered this place today and bought four slices of cakes - cheesecake, chocolate cake, roll cake, and fruit tart. They also have strawberry shortcake, but we couldn't try it because it was sold out. We had a pleasant conversation with a Japanese lady who runs this little bakery. She was very sweet and proud of her cakes. Right after having the first bite of the cakes, we wished we had found this place sooner. It is absolutely better than those you can find in Novi. The cakes were so creamy that they literally melted in our mouths. We cannot wait to order a whole cake - they are getting orders for Christmas cakes now. We are living in Ann Arbor, and we think it is worth driving for 50 minutes to visit here. If you want a whole Japanese experience, have lunch at Sushi Den 5 mins far from A' Fondant and go to this little bakery to have some dessert. A true hidden gem. read more
