I have been getting cakes from this place since I was a kid. Hadn't been back in years. It is a small family owned shop but I have to say the quality has not dropped off a bit since I last went. They may not be the modern beauties you can get at the Asian or middle eastern bakeries, but they taste the fabulous and still look the part. I adored Graf's Pastry when I used to work near here, but haven't visited in years. Last year, we placed two custom orders with Graf's - one for my parent's wedding anniversary and another for Christmas. The first was a small hazelnut torte with raspberry filling. The second was a bouche de Noel. Both cakes were moist and delicious - more flavor than sugar, which is what we love. Of the two, I preferred the hazelnut, which was perfectly addictive. But I wouldn't turn down a second slice of either. ;-) If your priority is a delicious cake - which it should be - versus over-the-top decorations, you can't go wrong with Graf's. I remember from years ago, they had an excellent cake with fresh strawberry filling. Perhaps that will be our next cake selection. My family and I have been coming here since I was little. 20 some year later and I'm still going here for their cakes! They're perfect for all types of celebrations. I've never had a bad cake from Graf's. My family loves them because nothing is overly sweet and is perfect! One of my favorites is the Fruit Flan, basically a big fruit tart with custard and a thin layer of yellow cake. I even got my wedding cake made here! Graf's is the best place to go for cakes. They make authentic European-style desserts from scratch every day. What I love about the cakes is that they aren't cloyingly sweet. The frosting is made of whipped cream instead of buttercream, which makes it a lot lighter (only the decorative "flowers" on top are made of buttercream). Over the years, my family and I have tried several different varieties of their cakes, like hazelnut, mocha Kahlua, strawberry, and Black Forest. They are all delicious. We also love getting the fruit flan, which has custard on top of a thin layer of cake and raspberry jam topped with glazed fruit, inside a tart shell. This is my most favorite pastry shop in Metro Detroit. They are located in a small shopping plaza near Orchard Lake Road. They have a variety of cakes. If I have a time to call in, I would definitely order a whole Vienna. Vienna is yellow cake and strawberry mousse with assorted fruits on top. The cake is very fluffy and very good. I was on the way to a housewarming at a friends and said I'd bring dessert. I didn't want to do something I always do so I popped open my handy dandy Yelp app and looked for a nearby bakery. Graf's is the one that caught my eye. I walked in and thought the place had a unique and charming vibe. I saw some regular and giant bday cakes in the cooler that were prelabeled with Happy Birthday so and so. There were probably 12 cakes that had been ordered in the cooler and I was excited to see what all the fuss was about. The woman came from back and told me they had several smaller mousse cakes that cost $19.99. They had vanilla, strawberry, Black Forest and the one I decided on mocha-Kailua mousse with yellow cake. She did the writing in a mix of orange and yellow and it looked very classy against the tan color of the frosting. I got to my friends house and after a few more guests arrived we dug in and OOooooooMMmmmmmGGgggggg did this cake exceed my expectations. It was one of the softest and tastiest cakes I've ever had and EVERYONE agreed and wanted to know where I got it. I'll definitely be back for more mocha-kailua mousse cake and to try there other varieties for my future special occasions. read more

Hidden Gem! We had been wanting to order Graf's Sacher torte for years, and I finally found the perfect opportunity for my husband's birthday celebration. After the long wait, it certainly did not disappoint! My husband is from Barcelona and has a discerning palette when it comes to food and dessert. The Sacher was much less sweet than a typical American dessert, the cake inside light and fluffy with a chocolate ganache coating and thin raspberry preserve layer. Very delicious and so good in fact, we will be placing another order this week for a Father's Day dessert, maybe the hazelnut cake or the fruit torte. We will be back! read more

Unfortunately, we were less than impressed with this bakery. It's a European place, but I've had some really good European pastries and this place does not get the prize. We ordered a cake for a small birthday gathering and boy am I glad we didn't have a party for that birthday bc we would have been embarrassed for serving that cake. Doesn't even come close to a plain grocery-store bought cake. I would sadly, but honestly say don't waste your time. At least not on the cakes. Had no flavor AT ALL!! Tasted dry and stale. Not sure how they are even in business still. The service was less than fair and the ambiance was like being in an old parlor from the 60's or so. It's like someone didn't want to spend any money on improving the place in any way, shape or form. Someone must have started the business long ago and just wanted to keep it as it was as a memory or something, because there is nothing desirable about this place. This place is a "must" whenever we're in Michigan. We had them make a lemon curd cake for our MI wedding reception, and it still stands as the best cake I've ever had. It's notable that their pastries are sweet enough, but not too sweet. You can really taste the flavors of the ingredients, rather than getting bogged down in a sugar rut. They just celebrated 40 years in business, and we hope they're around for many, many more! read more

I would give Graf Pastry 100 stars if I can !! These guys are simply fabulous and I have tried all their flavors. I have been going to the Graf Pastry for the last 5 years and I absolutely love this place. Their forte - the sweet content in each of their pastry type, in cookies and in their cake is so accurate that it is neither too sweet nor too bland. My favourite is the Peach pastry which I guess is seasonal. I have always ordered birthday cakes and other occasion cakes from here and have had guests raving about it. My favourite is the Strawberry cake and even the Rum cake is outstanding. I found out about this place when I tried a dessert (Biehnenstich?) at a German picnic I went to. Found out this place wasn't too far from me, so my wife and I stopped in on our way home from work. We ordered two things -- a cookie and a little pastry dessert for our little daughter. Cookie was stale, and pastry cake was getting firm on the outside, so also several days old. I was rather disappointed in their selection and quality, especially when expecting so much after the dessert I had tried previously to coming here. On top of this, they say they don't make that Biehnenstich unless you call in a special order. The store just felt like a run-down place that was trying to keep pace even though it's been dying for the past 10-20 years. Would I eat their Biehnenstich again? Of course. Friendly, Helpful and Delicious. I was the late guy on Fat Tuesday, stopping in during the lunch hour to get a few Paczkis and order a cake. Of course the person in front of me ordered 3 dozen and took all of the fillings I wanted. Only the prune and apricot were left. Sigh. After ordering the cake, the lady who helped me out confided that she had two empty Paczki shells in the back and could fill them with anything I wanted. I left with two raspberry. Mmmm. Best paczkis I have ever had. I will definitely be back. There are so many delicious looking foods in the display cases. It's hard to limit oneself.
