This was our second experience with Gentle Farewell. Our 1st was over 4 years ago, for my eldest son's fur baby, and it made a very difficult time peaceful and comforting. The vet who came, sorry I don't remember her name, was nothing short of amazing! Her words assured us we were doing the right thing. "You are giving Nina the most difficult gift that you have ever given." When it came time for my youngest son to say goodbye to his beloved Ryker, we didn't hesitate to call Gentle Farewell. Unfortunately, we did not have the same comforting experience. Dr. Parker was not unkind, but we certainly didn't connect with her glowing testimonials on the website. All 5 of us present, found her to be competent, but clinical and a bit rushed. Euthanizing a pet isn't an easy decision but AGF provides a great, respectable service. We called them about 3-4 days in advance of scheduling the actual time and date; even on a Sunday afternoon, an AGF representative called me back within an hour after I left a message. They answered all of the questions that I had over the phone. Note: they are busier on the weekends so we had scheduled it during a weekday morning. The vet came to our home in Old Brooklyn within the one hour window that they stated they would arrive (in an unmarked vehicle which was nice, I didn't want to advertise to my block that my pet was dying); the vet was competent and licensed (our dog did not appear to be in pain when given the shots); clearly explained what she was going to do, gave us as much time as we wished to be with our dog in its final moments; the vet did not hover over us. They also offer cremation as a separate service (and fee). We picked up our pet's ashes in a wooden container a couple weeks later. Even at the crematory offices, the staff was very polite. The experience of euthanizing a beloved pet is not easy but A Gentle Farewell brought dignity and compassion; happy to recommend it to anyone else. read more

We had to say goodbye to our sweet old girl cat, Evey, in October. A Gentle Farewell was recommended by several friends, so we reached out, figuring that saying goodbye at home would be much less stressful than traveling to an office, both for Evey and for us. Dr Murphy was so compassionate and kind. It's never easy to say goodbye, but she was gentle and gave us so much time to hold her after sedation. She let us wrap her up with a bouquet from the garden and gave us time to let out remaining critters say goodbye. I recieved a beautiful, heartfelt card a week after and it made me feel understood. Melissa handled the coordination of this and brought my girls ashes back to me today. She, too, was kind beyond words. This is the sort of service you never want, but A Gentle Farewell made a horrible day just a bit easier. I originally started to go through another service called Lap of Love when my 12 yo 100+ pound dog became acutely ill on Sunday evening. Due to his size and illness I could not get him in a car to bring him to a vet hospital. Lap of Love could not send a vet on Monday. Lap of Love by Tuesday were telling me due to them not calling me back on Monday night about premeds they could not send a vet. It was pure bureaucracy with them. At 2 am on Tuesday night my dog went outside and was so weak slipped on the stairs and could not make it back in. It was 30 degrees outside. He was dying, cold and shivering. It has taken me some time to write this review. I had researched "in home" euthanasia knowing my pet had a bad heart valve and knowing this was the type of thing I wanted for her when the time came. I became aware of "A Gentle Fairwell" when given a pamphlet from my vet. I researched them and they had good reviews. Fast forward to January 2024 and my pet had passed out in my arms. Her breathing became more labored and I didn't want her to struggle anymore so I called A Gentle Fairwell. My sister had used them a week prior and had a peaceful experience with Dr. Sabo who never left her pet's side. Unfortunately, I didn't have the same experience. I had made an appointment and they sent Dr. Parker out. When she arrived I noticed tubing in her hand with yellow fluid in it. I asked Dr. Parker about the process and she said she would give anesthesia like meds for sedation and when I was ready she would administer the euthanasia. My pet had lied down on my bed so I told her to go ahead with the sedation. She then grabbed my pet by the scruff of the neck, crammed something in and immediately left the room. My pet jumped up, had this look of terror on her face and immediately began darting around the bed. I hollered out to the kitchen to ask the Dr. why she was doing this. I picked her up to calm her down and she was out in seconds. I laid my head on her neck to hug her and had blood on my face from the puncture to her neck. I talked to the Dr. for several minutes then laid my pet down on the bed knowing she was already gone. Dr. Parker then administered the euthanasia drug. After Dr. Parker left I knew something wasn't right but I had the task of taking my pet to the crematorium. That Sat I went to see my vet and told her what happened. She had no idea what sedation would be yellow and showed me the tiny needle/syringe they use for sedation and told me what meds are usually given. I then spoke with my pet's cardiologist and a friend who is a vet tech and has given hundreds of sedation shots before euthanasia as well as numerous friends who have all lost pets and had "peaceful" passings. Not one of them could explain the method of administration Dr. Parker used. I searched online for proper euthanasia and read the Humane Society's Euthanasia Manual and ran across an article titled "Euthanasia Gone Bad" by a pet trainer who had the same experience as I when putting her pet down. From what I know of euthanasia sedation is supposed to be for the comfort of the pet and owner. It is supposed to be given slowly as all sedation meds can sting. It is supposed to happen over a 10-15 min period to allow you time to comfort your pet as they drift off to sleep. Per the euthanasia manual sedation should always be given intramuscularly to ease the pain and only subcutaneously if the animal lacks muscle or has atrophy. Most vets use a premix and it was listed as the best method to use for sedation. After reading "Euthanasia Gone Bad" there was a common theme to all of the pets reactions. Telazol was the drug used. I decided to get some answers from Dr. Parker directly, so I called and asked what was used to administer the sedation. She said she used a butterfly needle and confirmed a Telazol/Acepromazine combo which is what I saw in her hand. When I asked why she used a butterfly needle she said it is less painful. When I asked why she used a line instead of a small syringe she said it allows for wiggle room. When I asked why my pet was bleeding she said she was a skin bleeder. In 15 years of vaccinations and blood draws my pet never flinched or bled like that. She was given a needle meant for veins hard and fast when it should have been a tiny needle slow and gently. Had it been done that way my pet would have drifted off to sleep like all my other friends pets had done. Per my vet: "I'm so sorry you & Izzy were robbed of a non-painful and calm experience. The Dr. is the one who made her bleed and it wasn't less painful as she said it was MORE painful and I have never seen a butterfly needle used to give an injection anywhere but a vein". My pet's cardiologist agreed. I will never understand why my pet who gave me nothing but love and comfort in her last moments had to be of fear and pain. I was robbed of comforting her as she drifted off to sleep. I'm not sure why Dr. Parker used this method on my pet but I will spend the rest of my life trying to get that picture of her looking at me in terror out of my mind. I paid $375 for A Gentle Fairwell that was anything but. My pet & I deserved better than that in her final moments on this earth. If you want a peaceful passing don't use Dr. Parker or A Gentle Fairwell. No one will ever convince me it was just my pet's way of reacting. Done properly she would have drifted off to sleep like every other one of my friend's pets did. If I can spare one pet and owner this same fate, then reliving that day to type this is worth it. The communication was good & was given an appointment the next day. When Dr. Janelle Martin arrived, she put me at ease. She was so soft-spoken, gentle, compassionate and communicated the whole process perfectly! She did not rush us through at all, allowing us to take as long as we needed to say our goodbyes. The entire process was quiet and peaceful. Dr. Martin was very comforting and even took the time to "love on" my dear Socksie girl! When it was over, we were given as much time as we needed to be with our forever friend. She was 21 years old and lived a great life with us. (And us with her!) We had her since the day she was born, as we had also taken her mother and sister in as strays. Before Dr. Martin left, she gently wrapped Socks in a cute, soft baby blanket she brought with her...just like a real baby, with Socks's peaceful face peaking through. She carried her out so gently. I would DEFINITELY, WITHOUT HESITATION, recommend A Gentle Farewell. My Socks was always so afraid of the ride to the vet. Home euthanasia allowed her to remain in her own home & not be afraid. A little pricier than going to your own vet, but SO worth it!! I only wish that I had called them a little sooner. Having to put a beloved pet to sleep is never an easy choice, but if it's the right choice for the circumstances, I can't imagine a better service than what Dr. Kim Parker provides. Recommended by many local animal hospitals and vet offices, Dr. Parker is a consummate professional, accommodating, empathetic and compassionate, allowing her clients to make the final call on their own terms, without ever rushing or hovering. If your pet gets nervous when visiting the vet's office, the most humane, least stressful way to perform this final and sensitive procedure would be to have it performed at home, or where your pet is most comfortable. Our 9-year old rottweiler/lab mix had advanced-staged liver disease and the doctors predicted that even with the most costly medical treatment, it wasn't a guarantee that her life could be saved for much longer. She was clearly in a lot of pain and a shadow of her usual, energetic and charismatic self. Watching her struggle to breathe, fighting with every inch of her body to just stay alive just became too much. Living was nothing but misery to her now, so we made the very sad and difficult decision to put her to sleep. However, we knew she'd be scared and stressed if we took her to the vet's office, so we looked at options for in-home euthanasia, where she'd be comfortable and calm before the procedure. Our interaction with Dr. Parker was very smooth from the start. I was able to set up an appointment immediately. Dr. Parker is well-accredited, a graduate of OSU's veterinary doctorate program, and works on the emergency staff at Westpark Animal Hospital in addition to making house calls. Her website provides all the information you need and even some paperwork you can complete (e.g. consent form) beforehand so that the focus is on your pet and not on the logistics of the transaction when she makes her house call. She also provides aftercare options, as many vet offices do. When she arrived with her assistant, our dog, though ill and weak, immediately greeted her with as much energy she could muster, like an old friend, even though our dog's known to be antagonistic to strangers. It was evident that Dr. Parker and her assistant were gentle and comfortable with animals. Dr. Parker was very clear in her explanations with how she would perform the procedure and let us pick the time frame and when the substances would be injected. She performed sedation before administering the euthanasia--many vet offices don't perform sedation beforehand--which made the process much more calm and peaceful. The whole time, our dog was resting in her own cozy little bed, surrounded by her family and not at all nervous or scared. It was an anguished time for all of us, but thanks to Dr. Parker, it was also peaceful, loving, and natural. We asked Dr. Parker and her assistant for aftercare services as well, and they were able to carry our dog out in her bed and with her favorite blanket, all of which would be cremated with the body at our request. A week later, Dr. Parker personally came to deliver the ashes and her paw print imprinted in a ceramic/clay plaque. When reviewing the cost of the in-home visit and aftercare services, Dr. Parker's rates in comparison against the rates of other vets that make house calls are reasonable. Truly, with the peace of mind, sense of comfort and calm she provides at this sensitive time to pet parents and the pets themselves, it is more than reasonable--it's a precious gift that not money, but only a talented and kind-spirited professional can guarantee. I DO NOT recommend this business for urgent matters, which I imagine would happen often when you run an in-home euthanasia service. We had an emergent situation with our dog, and Dr. Kimberly Parker was recommended through a local animal hospital. We left a voicemail, sent her an email, and even tried to reach her through petlossathome.com, which has her listed as the local vet who would be contacted through their 800 number. We left a message through this voicemail as well. It looks like another reviewer/tipper had the same issue a few months ago. We did not receive any contact from Dr. Parker for over 24 hours. This doesn't work when you have a dog who is suddenly suffering and needs to be euthanized. To be fair, she states on her website to call your local vet if she can't be reached, but that was not an option for us when we're trying to avoid anymore stress on our senior dog. If it were my business, I would have a way of receiving emergency calls so I could route the customer to someone else if I wasn't available. We never had a chance to use her in-home euthanasia services. Luckily we were able to find a different vet who was available within a few hours. I had the worst day of my life on Saturday when I had to put my lifelong best friend down. It's taken me four days to get on and leave a review because I am so unbelievably heartbroken and haven't been able to get the strength to write anything. However, because of this place, A Gentle Farewell, my dog, Chewy, got the most amazing send off. Dr Janelle was incredibly caring and loving and attentive. She made this horrible time so much easier for me and Chewy was never once scared or aware of what was happening. She was so kind and patient with me as I took a lot of time to say goodbye. Michelle was the woman who I did all of my initial communication with and she is equally as wonderful. At a time like this, all you want is for people to care and e compassionate. This is exactly what the people at A Gentle Farewell do for you. I am forever thankful for them. I hope I never have to use them again, because going through this was just awful, but since dogs don't live as long as humans, when I need this service again, I know I will be calling them.
