I truly wanted to give Brookview Animal Hospital five stars. When my 16-year-old cat, Tinkerbell, passed away unexpectedly, they were the only clinic open and available to help. For that, I will always be grateful; it meant I didn't have to endure the heartbreak of keeping her with me over the weekend, reliving the pain again and again. However, the compassion I expected in such a devastating moment was missing. When I brought Tinkerbell in to be cremated, I was visibly distraught: crying, heartbroken, completely undone. The veterinarian was there but said nothing. No acknowledgment. No simple, human expression of sympathy. Not even a quiet "I'm sorry for your loss." I tried to give the benefit of the doubt, maybe he didn't know what to say or felt awkward. But when I returned to pick up her ashes and saw him again, the silence repeated itself. Still nothing. I understand that I wasn't a regular client. He didn't know me. He didn't know my cat. But as a veterinarian, I had hoped he would understand what the loss of a pet feels like and that, in those moments, a small gesture of kindness goes a long way. I wasn't expecting a dramatic display, just a bit of humanity. Brookview may be a good vet for those with ongoing relationships, but my experience left me feeling more alone at a time when I needed empathy the most. Since this place is close to where I live, I visited there (for the first and last time) in early April, 2025. My cat had been listless and mopey for a couple of weeks, so I took him to this place for an examination. The staff personnel were nice enough and one of the staff asked me to wait with the cat in an examining room. While I was waiting, several people came in and out of the room. Finally, an older man came into the room. I had to ask him if he was the veterinarian because he didn't introduce himself to me; he said he was. The man (Dr. Somma) looked exhausted and like he was ready to drop over. Furthermore, he seemed disinterested and did not look me in the eye when he was talking to me. I find people not looking at you when they speak to you to be simply rude. Anyway, he examined the cat and said he couldn't determine any specific problem after doing that. I had to ask him where we could go from there. He said that they could do a full blood analysis of the cat which would give him a comprehensive picture of what the cat's problem might be. The cost for this would be $500. I agreed to this and, after about forty-five minutes, he came back with the results. The veterinarian said that the cat had a 40% kidney failure but that the cat could still live with that for an indefinite length of time. That was it. He didn't make any suggestions as to what help or therapy I could give the cat at home or where we could go from there to help the cat. Furthermore, there was not even a follow-up phone call from this veterinarian office after my visit there (even after spending $500. with them) as to how the cat was doing. If this veterinarian is burnt out or has had enough of doing this (which was my impression), he should hang it up. It wasn't that he was unpleasant but that he is just "processing" clients to get them in and out of the place as quickly as possible. Dr. Somma is a great Veterinarian that absolutely cares for your pet. He doesn't try to gouge your wallet. In fact, I'd say he tries to save you money all while looking out for the best interest for your pet. I've recommended him to all my friends and family and they all use him. He's part of my family and he should be part of yours. As for the review that mentions his tremors, he just removed kidney stone from my Chihuahua. No issues. He knows his limitations and referrers to other vets often. My only complaint is the young men who run the front desk. Often very rude, no empathy. I love this group. Have been going there for the past 40 years. He brought some of our animals into this world and have, sadly, had to take some of them out of it. All the while calming us down. They are professional and very knowledgeable and I have recommended them to many others, included family member for their fur babies. I hate even giving Dr Somma a one star. He botched a cat declaw on my poor 1 and a half year old kitten. Now the cat can barely walk on his front paws. He charged me $450 for a Lazer declaw but did a regular declaw. Then blames my cat for the fact that 3 months later he can barely use his front right paw. He has a SEVERE tremor in both his hands and tried to hide it from me. DONT TAKE YOUR POOR PET TO HIM PLEASE!! read more

Would not recommend this place to anyone. I scheduled an appointment for 4:45 and showed up on time. Called the office twice when arrived, since we are not allowed in the building, and no answer. Once I got someone on the phone they told me my appointment was at 4:30 and I can not be fit in today. I told the lady that I confirmed with a gentleman the day before and he told me yes the appointment is at 4:45. She said "yeah sorry nothing I can do" (insincerely). They messed up and did not try to fix it. They offered a reschedule for another day but I left work early for this appointment and can not do again. read more

Decided to write a review about this place after reading another similar review, since my experience was practically the same, if not worse. I had just moved to the area, and this was the closest vet to my apartment, so I decided to bring my cat in for a check-up. She was experiencing a great deal of stress and had not been eating and was losing hair and weight since the move. She also had some issue with her ears and needed her claws clipped. First of all, I found the vet tech and vet to be completely disinterested in anything I had to say and barely made eye contact. I don't feel my concerns were all addressed or even acknowledged. After taking her temperature, he told me it was extremely high and suggested they run tests and take an x-ray, not mentioning the cost. I blindly agreed, and he brought back the results of the tests and the x-ray, only to tell me they'd have to send it somewhere else to have the x-ray analyzed since he wasn't even able to do that in his office. Feeling somewhat put off, since I had also asked them to check out her ears, which they never did, and after watching the vet roughly clip her claws with large human toenail clippers, I was pretty sure I would not be returning. After my twenty minute visit, I headed out to pay my bill, only to discover, much to my shock and dismay, I somehow owed these people $360. I guess for the tests which showed nothing and the x-ray they weren't even capable of reading. They gave me no paperwork regarding whatever tests they took. They misrepresented the need for these tests and the x-ray preying on my vulnerability and concern for my pet. Most likely the issue with my cat was merely stress (which turns out to be the case), and an ethical vet would have explained that instead of using scare tactics about the possibility of cancer, which was his method of convincing me these things were necessary. He also had an obligation to disclose the cost of these tests and the x-ray before I agreed. My boyfriend called him later for some explanation and he was clearly unapologetic and remorseless about how he had taken advantage of the situation. I let them know I would not be returning and I hope I save another concerned pet-owner from possibly being manipulated by these people. There are certainly better vets in the area. read more

If I could give zero stars this would be the time... made an appointment over the phone for my cat who isnt feeling well, and mentioned multiple times she would need sedation before handling. I showed up early to the appointment which was a mistake since they made me wait over an hour past my time,... and when the finally took her in, I received a call from the main vet saying he couldn't get her out of the cage, and I replied " yes I know so go ahead and sedate her" to which he said he didn't have time for today, and to make another appointment! What a total waste of time after already waiting a few days for my appointment he tells me to make another one!? They are only in it for the money as I have been hearing and learning myself as well... save your time and money and take your pet somewhere that cares!! read more

We had not previously been to Brookview as we used VIP pet care for well check ups and immunization. When our dog was showing signs that age was getting to her and her bad days started outweighing the good, we looked for a vet that was local, small and not a part of a chain, and personable when asking questions about euthanasia and cremation. It was a very hard decision and Brookview was great. They were understanding, compassionate, and explained the process to us. They granted us the time we needed to say our last goodbye, and made sure our girl was comfortable before doing anything. They honored our request to have a dog bone cremated with her. I am very happy with all they did for us. I would highly recommend them, and we will be using them in the future for our other pets. read more

You can tell how much he cares for animals and always took the time to patiently answer my questions back in the puppy days.....when I had a TON of questions. My dog can be a shy dog, but she just loves him. Even though he gives her nasty shots with a big bad needle. I had never been to Brookview animal hospital before, but after looking around at all the different places decided I would bring my new kitten "Mushu" there for a laser declaw and some tests. I can not express enough how warm and friendly these people are. Everyone there is companionate and understanding. My cat did beautifully and got excellent care. Dr. Somma is kind and personable. I have been bringing my pets to Brookview for 18 years now. From puppy shots and check-ups, to neutering, to ACL surgery, to 'my dog broke a nail', Dr. Somma is always there for all of us. I ask a lot of questions and he takes the time to answer each one completely and in detail. Once, I was on vacation on the west coast when my dog had an emergency. My live-in dog sitter brought him in. Instead of sending him home after, he agreed to keep the dog there and take over the task of caring for an 86 pound dog. I took the red-eye home, surgery for a torn ACL was performed, and he taught me the best way to carry an 86 pound dog outside to go potty. Our last visit was for the basic check-up and nail trim. Listen to the heart rate, check the eyes and ears, blood drawn, all fine. Nail trim, not today. Patience gets a whole new meaning when an English Mastiff does not want his nails cut. Even Rodney's expert belly scratching had no effect. Dr. Somma never gave up. I don't know how he could stay that calm during the spoiled dog temper tantrum of all time. I get reminders for check-ups. I get reminders for heartworm refills in between checkups. I feel comfortable calling for advice any time. I know I have trust issues, especially when it comes to my pets' care. I trust Dr. Somma. read more

Could not be more disappointed with my choice of going here. Having just moved from California leaving an incredible vet's office, I was hoping to find something to live up to my expectations. I first called and told the lady on the phone exactly what needed to be done to my puppy. She told me about 42 dollars for his shots, which was still kinda high, but reasonable. So we arrive at the vets the girl at the counter seemed somewhat friendly, but not very talkative. Then it seemed as if the vet and vet helpers wouldn't answer questions I had about my dog. They did not seem at all very interested in the health of my dog, and seemed when I asked a question it bothered them. Then by the end of my visit I went to check out and pay, the girl ends up telling me my bill is 89 dollars. They ended up giving my dog all this extra stuff that I had not asked for nor was I informed these things would cost extra, I thought they were doing all the normal shots. I went ahead and paid the 89, but I will not be returning here at all. if you care for you animals at all and want a vet that actually cares, please consider going else where. read more

I was given the unfortunate task of taking my brothers 9 year old cat to be euthanized. I was sad about having to do it, but my brother was just home from major surgery and could not. So I get to the front desk and the one young lady asked me if I had considered trying to find another home for the cat, had we tried medicine, did I think about taking him to the APL (she then volunteered to take him for me) and was he neutered. Yes to all of the above. He was being put to sleep because of constant marking in the house. He had been doing it for 2 years and basically destroyed the house. No one was going to take a cat that has that kind of problem after we had tried every trick in the book. Long story short, she made the task much more upsetting to me than I feel it needed to be. I was made to feel guilty (which, believe me, I already did). I don't know if they are taught to "grill" customers like that or she took it upon herself. Regardless, I didn't feel she had the right to do it. The cat had been going to that vet his whole life. I know I will never do business with them. And my brother was not happy with the way I was treated. read more
