I had initially given them 5 stars, so I will simply revert to that with the understanding that I have not had any animals seen at Gateway in a few years. It was never a matter of not caring enough- all of my encounters reflected a staff of people who were very dedicated to the care they were giving. And no, I wasn't pressured in any way to change my review. It's important to me to be as accurate and fair as possible. I am just now reading the response from Gateway, as I don't use Yelp often, so I am updating my review based on the new information. Previous Review: We went to Gateway for several years for our dogs. They had good pricing and the staff was friendly, competent, and clearly passionate about the work they did. These qualities can be really hard to find... especially the combination of reasonable pricing and competent, passionate care. I gave Gateway a 5-star rating when I first reviewed them 8 years ago. The problem is the walk-in only nature of the practice, paired with significant changes in how Gateway is run. I suspect that they may have been sold to equity investors or similar schemes that ultimately destroy so many good vet practices, but I am not sure. Before covid even showed up, I found myself avoiding taking the dogs to the vet because I couldn't handle sitting and waiting for HOURS every single time. Didn't matter if I showed up before they opened- the line was already long. I am physically disabled, so sitting for hours in their waiting room had a physical cost in addition to the fact that most people don't enjoy waiting for long periods of time. The last time we went, we were told to cue up outside more than an hour before opening to even have a shot at being seen that day. It was absolutely horrible having to stand in the freezing cold for so long, our sick dog waiting with us. Despite being this early, we weren't ultimately seen until mid day. It isn't even a first come first served situation. They aren't primarily an emergency vet yet they triage. So you'll be sitting there watching so many go ahead of you unless your pet is experiencing a medical emergency. This seems like a reasonable approach on paper, but unfortunately it means that a visit to Gateway requires me to clear my schedule for the entire day and that just is not reasonable. It also isn't fair to the animals- especially if they're sick or otherwise frail. The people who founded Gateway are long gone, as is the wonderful service they provided. If you're desperate to have your pet seen (and you can manage to show up first thing in the morning and wait several hours to be seen), maybe it's a good fit for you. Otherwise keep looking.

She was upset after coming out of anesthesia and offered her no comfort and did not call us to report her distress. When my husband showed up, they refused to help him retrieve her because they did not know how to handle her. We also told them that she get nervous when you try to touch her head. First thing they did? Try to touch her head. One of my other dogs developed bladder cancer. They offered no comfort care or any suggestions for treatment. They just said to euthanized her. When we decided to euthanize her, they offered no comfort. They left the room after injecting her. and she had a seizure. when I mention it, they said I should have called for them, but I didn't want to leave my dying dog. Fast forward 4 years after switching vets, her brother has the same diagnosis and same staging, and he is thriving on medication. Also, after being a customer for years, when my dog was dehydrated, they refused to treat him. Don't eve trust them with your pet's health. They are incompetent.

They made an extremely difficult process so much easier by their kindness. Riley passed on so peacefully and we couldn't be more grateful. During his decline we tried several medical interventions to give him more comfort and they called and followed up multiple times to see how he was doing. I highly recommend the Brecksville Animal Hospital.

I actually live in Chicago, but have gotten unhappy with the vets in my neighborhood, so for the last two years, I have brought my cat home with me for Thanksgiving to have her annual exam/shots at the Brecksville Animal Hospital. I'm happy with the care, and double-happy with the price! And my cat is pretty satisfied too, all things considered. They only thing keeping BAH from a 5-star rating is the wait time. Because of the length of time they spend with each animal, and the fact that they are anxious to accommodate emergency visits, you should plan to spend extra time waiting...but it's worth it!

Searching for a vet was very similar to the health care conditions in our country and a real eye opener. It's hard to reconcile that reality with the purpose of veterinary medicine. If helping animals is the reason for the work, outright refusal of care--especially for a young puppy--is difficult to understand and disappointing. YES you should take your pet here if you would like them to die…read more Over 20 years of pet ownership and 12 pets ... this is THE WORST experience I have ever had with a veterinary clinic. I trusted this clinic with my sick dog, and they treated her with such carelessness and lack of compassion. During her visit, my dog was dropped while already in a fragile condition. The IV placement was handled so roughly that she was cut so deeply she had scars on her skin. Watching someone treat an already suffering animal, MY best friend this way... was heartbreaking. We were told her bloodwork, and samples would be back in 1-3 days, and based on that information they placed her on the maximum dose of pain medication and sent us off with the bill. When we asked reasonable questions about whether this could become a recurring issue, the vet gave what felt like a completely dismissive and patronizing response, reducing our concerns to, "Cancer is bad," and explaining what cancer is instead of addressing our actual questions. We weren't asking for a textbook definition... We were asking about our dog's future. After four days of complete silence, we had to call because our dog's condition was rapidly worsening. She was in obvious pain, losing weight, unable to eat, the mass was growing quickly, and she had started urinating on herself without the ability to even keep her head up. Only then were we told that the results would actually take closer to 1-2 weeks completely contradicting what we had originally been told. 1 week after still hearing nothing, we called again looking for answers. Instead of concern for our dying dog, we were told we needed to pay more money and that our bill for the tests was due. Even though we had already paid around $480 at the visit, for that testing and treatment. The lack of communication was unacceptable. The lack of urgency was unacceptable. The lack of empathy was unacceptable. At no point did anyone reach out to check on our dog or keep us informed. We spent days desperately chasing updates while watching her deteriorate. Whether the lab was delayed or not, the clinic's communication, professionalism, and compassion were entirely within their control, and in my experience, they failed on every one of those fronts. I cannot recommend this clinic to anyone. Based on my experience, I would never trust them with another animal. TO PET OWNERS - As my dog was pleading for help, scared and unable to understand what was going on with her, VCA failed us. Please do not take your best friend to this clinic. You will lose them.

However, the compassion I expected in such a devastating moment was missing. When I brought Tinkerbell in to be cremated, I was visibly distraught: crying, heartbroken, completely undone. The veterinarian was there but said nothing. No acknowledgment. No simple, human expression of sympathy. Not even a quiet "I'm sorry for your loss." I tried to give the benefit of the doubt, maybe he didn't know what to say or felt awkward. But when I returned to pick up her ashes and saw him again, the silence repeated itself. Still nothing. I understand that I wasn't a regular client. He didn't know me. He didn't know my cat. But as a veterinarian, I had hoped he would understand what the loss of a pet feels like and that, in those moments, a small gesture of kindness goes a long way. I wasn't expecting a dramatic display, just a bit of humanity. Brookview may be a good vet for those with ongoing relationships, but my experience left me feeling more alone at a time when I needed empathy the most. And that's why, as much as I wish I could say otherwise, I can't recommend them based on my experience.
