First and foremost, the quality of the work his contracted guys do is outstanding. We solicited several bids on our projects 2 out of the 3 years and both times his prices came back right in line if not a little better. The major problem with Richard is the lack of attention to detail. For both projects that we bid out, he missed some details that were supposed to be included (hence his lower price to start with perhaps). The first year it was a small thing and we decided to split the difference on the missed item. The second time it happened, it was a major omission during a larger project and he was not willing to lower his original price. And this was discovered through 90% completion of the job! We had the original discussion points all in writing and there was no re-pricing. After we told him that we would not be using him anymore in the future, he made sure that his contractors got paid the maximum amount of money (in spite of a safety margin typically built into these things). On the last day, we ended up paying his plumber close to $1000 for 2 hours of work. Throughout the planning and reconstruction process we had to reiterate (always in writing) certain details to remind him of what the original plan was. As a GC it is imperative to be detailed orientated, the lack thereof is simply a non starter.

Therefore, we asked Ruy to install a Timberteck stair rail at our front doors, which also has withstood the test of time. We'd been concerned that installments like this would compromise the brick, whereby requiring a total rebuild, but a rebuild wasn't necessary. He also advise us on an easy and effective fix to divert water from flowing from the gutter and freezing to ice on those brick steps in winter. Based on the outcome of these projects, and our experience in their progression, we highly recommend this company.

Brutal experience with them back in 2022-2024. Would take weeks and, more than once, even months…read moreto get them to come back and do any work (see screenshots of my text interactions with them -- note the dates). They were supposed to build a new rubber roof. It started leaking on 3 separate occasions (which btw was never fully fixed -- we moved on to different contractors who did address the issues). And like I said, it would take months for them to actually come back and attempt to fix anything. Often they'd come by, look at the damage, then I wouldn't hear from them for multiple weeks. Meanwhile, more damage continues to accrue to the walls and ceilings. The internal fixes they applied for the water damage were just patch jobs. They just plastered and painted over. Meanwhile, the insulation behind the wall was soaked and accrued black mold that we had to address later. Also worth pointing out a major blunder at the beginning of the project (see attached videos and pics). They opened up the roof, and left it open for multiple days without doing any work. Well of course a major rainstorm came by (which was on the weather forecast well in advance). Alll that water poured into the house in the middle of the night setting off fire alarms. It was a nightmare to deal with on my end.

All seemed knowledgeable but Spectrum Heating and Cooling was the clear choice for two reasons: first, the price for a top-tier brand was roughly $6,000 less than second-tier brands at the others. Second, Joe, the owner, was personable, transparent, and clearly honest. He was the only one, for example, who first checked into the cost of replacing parts for my old system before proposing a new one. He was also the most consistent about following up. Two of his competitors with the most expensive bids had fewer years of experience than Spectrum yet they dropped the ball on communications, forgetting to provide estimates on deadline. To me, this spoke to possible issues down the line with reliability. Joe answered all of my (many) questions, followed up with a timely proposal, and followed through with a quick, easy, hassle-free installation. This company may be smaller and less flashy than his competitors but I suspect the reason he doesn't need to be so aggressive in advertising is that he is so professional and competitive in his pricing that he wins customers based on great word of mouth. I'll certainly be among them.
