If Whole Foods and Clements Market had a baby it would be A Market. This market is located in the Bellevue Garden Shopping Center. The parking lot is quite spacious, but the plaza only offers paid parking, however you can get your parking validated with purchase at any store in the plaza with proof of parking ticket. The store itself was clean, rather spacious, and well organized with clearly labeled aisles and pricing. I found that you could get many of the staple items at nearby competitors for nearly half the price. I thought they offered unique products in the meals to go section for a reasonable price point. I would recommend the mini snackle boxes and raw pressed juices. Those could actually be useful for a nearby beach trip and I liked that they use glass jars. The woman running the cafe section of the store was very hospitable, but as other Yelpers have mentioned some of the other store associates were less than enthused. I kind of get it though, Newport's upper echelon isn't the easiest clientele to interact with so I would probably get a little stoic over time as well. read more

Take a look at the impressive selection of prepared foods, including homemade noodle salads, quiches, and Indian samosas served alongside an addictive curry aioli sauce. They also have the best soups on the island, which rotate on a weekly schedule. My favorite is the creamy and complex Thai Chicken Soup, the perfect antidote to a cold Newport night, with layers of flavor from shredded tender chicken and soothing aromatic coconut milk. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. A Market also specializes in showcasing locally made Rhode Island based products. One of the best items are Butter Cuisine butters that are made in neighboring Jamestown, Rhode Island by one of the former chefs at the popular Clarke Cooke House restaurant downtown. He and his wife started the line of gourmet finishing butters for sweet and savory dishes, and some of the flavors include truffle, garlic, and the ever popular dessert cinnamon butter. Check out Narragansett Creamery's cheeses as well - their ricotta tastes wonderful on pizza and pasta, and is always in my fridge! Sure, it can get a little pricy here, especially since it's all certified organic food, but not only is the quality superb, but also the service is exceptional, and supporting a small local business is the best part of all. Firstly, I need not say more about their prices in general than when at Stop & Shop across the street, I can not only find some identical items selling for a bit less there, but in one case, selling for asa much as $5.00 less. I found it odd that they did not offer butter to accompany their rolls, so I asked for it, once, then twice, but on the third visit--believe it or not--they flatly refused to give me even the slightest pat of butter for my bread. I love the A Market! It has been my go to market for years and years! Their new space is terrific! However, If I could change one thing... I would be their affinity for 50's music. Maybe this says more about me then it does them, but 50's music hurts my ears, and honestly, it makes my soul cry a little. I would not purchase a pie from A Market. They intentionally under bake them. The crust is not flaky at all. There is no warning on the container that one needs to bake the product at home after purchasing. What if you want to bring a pie to a dinner party or serve after dinner to your guests? Terribly inconvenient. I have spoken to the store about this issue. They say the pies sell. Last time I was there early afternoon there were maybe ten pies on the counter. This is a great little neighborhood market. It's a bit pricey but the produce and meat depts are excellent!! There very eco friendly and the market is well stocked . It's clean and organized. The customer service could be better. I'm apt to go if the place where I traveling to for a special meal or ingredient is customer friendly. I find parking easy so I can run in and get out quick. It's located in a very busy area especially in the summer months. They do charge for parking but I believe the first hour is free but get your ticket stamped at any of the stores just to make sure. Parking is crazy in Newport in the summer. I was told they have delicious muffins made daily that are worth a try in the morning. A Market = the Whole Foods of Newport; same prices as WF, just 1/10th the size. Tried the Tarragon Chicken Sandwich thinking it would be the most plain thing on the face of the planet. Wrong. A little pricey ($6.99); surprisingly simple, yet flavorful for a pre-made sandwich at an organic foods store. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. I will start by saying I love the new location. Everything is very clean, and the layout of the store is great. They always have new cool items and an awesome selection of healthy foods. Very high quality organic produce as well. I love the soup selections and prepared food. The only reason for the 3 stars is because every time I shop here there is a ridiculously long line at checkout. They seem to be consistently understaffed at the checkout stations, and there is always a system error where the payment wont go through, or items wont ring up correctly. It is not the end of the world but can be a major inconvenience to someone in a hurry. I wont shop here before work anymore because there is a 9 out of 10 chance I will be held up an extra 10-15 minutes in line just to buy one kombucha. read more

I had a pretty weird experience here today. I stopped in to grab a bottle of water and upon checkout I began to talk to one of the cashiers. She asked me if I was from Chicago because of a shirt I was wearing. I told her that I was not and that I was from Portland (I continued to explain that I had just moved there about seven months prior for a job). As I said this, another employee stated that she had lived in Portland during 1996. We made small talk and I left. About two minutes later my friends come out having just made some purchases themselves. They told me that the employee who said she had lived in Portland was furious at me for saying I was from there. Apparently, it was wrong of me to say that I was from Portland when I had only lived there for half a year (next time I will be a more decent human and let her know the exact hospital that I was born at to avoid confusion). The lady allegedly stated that she wanted to "punch me." I worked in customer service for years and I would never make a statement to another customer like this. read more

A Market... the A must stand for average. A Market shines in convenience. It's right on tourist trap Bellevue Avenue and is perfect for grabbing some organic snacks before heading downtown or heading over to their prepared delicious (but a bit expensive) food section for an easy lunch. They have a pretty unique selection of foods; I find certain things in there that I haven't found at the local supermarkets or other organic food stores on the island. However, I feel that customer service really lacks in this place, especially during the times I come in usually in the evenings after I get out of work. I never am really asked if I need any help, or not even a greeting. I suppose that I'm just a person who likes to be acknowledged and enjoys good service, and I really do expect it in a small market like A Market. I'm rating this place three stars because I do enjoy shopping there to get those rare and unusual items I can't find in other stores, but if it was based on overall friendliness it would probably scale down to two stars. read more

I love this little store. Yes, it's pricy ( For some things )but the people who work it are generally very friendly, and if you love organic food this is the only place to really find it in Newport. They have a very nice selection of Gluten free goods, vegitarian goods, and my favorite Dairy free goods! More often than not, I pop into A Market for their prepared food rather than groceries. Head to the back corner of the store for sandwiches, wraps, dips, salads, appetizers, curries, and of course their delicious soups (my favorite). Their selection has plenty of choices for carnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike. They even have a few tables inside and outside if you want to dig in right away. They do have a pretty good selection of organic, natural groceries for being such a small store. My problem is that you can't really rely on them to have that *one* thing you are looking for... but at least stop & shop is across the street to fill in those gaps. I am tempted to give this market two stars, because I think the prices are ridiculous. I can't cite examples as I usually do, but in some cases they're double what you'd pay for the "non-organic" version. I am not much of a believer in the "organic" craze - and I'm a carnivore. So I can't compare A Market to other organic groceries, but I've been to Whole Foods (Whole Paycheck) and maybe I am living in ignorance. It's bliss, by the way. I give it three stars for being well organized, attractively presented, and pretty conveniently located. Kind of a pain to park though - even though they have a huge lot, it's controlled access in the summer, so you have to get a ticket, blah blah blah. One hour no problem, three with validation. I want to give it two stars though just because of their unoriginal naming and obvious maneuver to appear at the top of the search results (that is, until someone opens AA Market) and the top of the phone book for the six people that still use the phone book. read more

I so wish I had discovered this market before now. I was impressed with the selection of items they carry. I was looking all over for a place that carries fresh juice, or at least green juice sans fruit. They carry both the Evolution brand and make a mixture of their own juices. And they have Kombucha, the protein powder I like, and my favorite dark chocolate. There were many items that had a pricing similar to that of the regular grocery store. They have high protein noodles, which I've been looking for. I also liked the area of convenience foods. You can get mini cups of chicken salad and the like to try before buying a bigger container. This grocery store has everything you would need, really. It's not big enough to stock everything you can get everywhere else, obviously. That would make it the size of a small town. But that's not the case of any store I know. Because it's a mad idea. Anyway, what it does have is awesome vegan sandwiches. Like vegan BLT and vegan roast. Deeeelish. And local faves like Del's lemonade (though not the proper iced version). The only drawback is the prices of everything. Jacked up for convenience (and because it's Newport). It's a good market. But the hours DO NOT support 8:30 to 5-ers, or even 9 to 5-ers! It is not an option for picking up breakfast before work, nor if you work late and want to grab something easy for dinner after a long day. Excellent market! Great alternative to Whole Foods. They have a serious problem with a long blonde haired cashier, that for some reason is outrageously rude and quite honestly, I think there is something seriously wrong with her. Three out of four occasions in the last two months she has been incredibly nasty to me for twice, very slight Covid Protocal violations (I did not see a sign to not put my bag on the bagging area - I saw no sign - oh and I wasn't even in her checkout lane. The other, customer at end of bagging area and she was making ZERO attempt at moving the transaction along, while there were two full lines waiting to check out.....I stepped forward to put some things down as opposed to putting my basket on the ground....she freaked out. Of course, I was same distance to her as I would be when I actually am cashing out, and easily 15 feet from the customer....), which have no grounds in common sense. And the first instance, just NASTY when I tried to make kind small talk with her. It was unbearable. Guess I will boycott until something is done about this miserable excuse for a human who has ZERO business in customer service. Is this a management issue? read more

This place came to my rescue twice in my long-weekend visit, and I wish there were one by me here in DC! It reminded me of the small health food store I lived close to in Athens, GA, though now I cannot remember for the life of me what it was. They have fresh produce (I went in for apples) and great options in the dairy section (I discovered a delicious yogurt brand/flavor: Wallaby orange and passion fruit). Many prepared options as well, including several soups and chilis, sandwiches, salads, sides (i.e., couscous, quinoa, etc.), chopped fresh fruit and more. TONS of trail mix options (serve up your own size), beans, etc. When I was there on a Saturday they had lots of samples out, and I was taken by some really yummy oat cookies (Effie's) and just had to walk out with a package. Pricey, as most health/organic food stores are. It was really easy to walk here from our B&B on Spring St. (Samuel Durfee House.) Service was fine. The second time I went in I was in a really crappy mood (sick and pissed....long story) and the cashier was quite friendly regardless of the negative vibes I was probably emanating! read more

The other reviewers are right that the prices here are way higher than they need to be--the Stop & Shop and Shaws have organic items at a fraction of the cost -- but their selection is not as good as A Market...which actually used to be called The Harvest--which was a MUCH better name. A Market also has another store in Manchester, NH that is tied to the one on Bellevue...but that one is much better! The only reason I give it three stars over two is because this is the only place that I can find natural and organic toiletry items without having to drive to Portsmouth to either the Green Grocer or Clements. Some items like Narragansett Creamery cheese products are priced fairly -- similar to what I pay at the farmers market..but it seems like some of the larger brands are uber expensive. read more

I come to A Market occasionally, but only when I know exactly what I need. You can't depend on customer service here, especially if you need her finding a specialty item. The employes are not friendly or helpful. I was actually standing in front of the prepared food section the other day and one employee stood right in front of me and began to restock and reorganize, not caring that she was blocking me and causing me to leave without buying anything. Their prices are also very high, even for an organic market. I much rather travel a little further to Portsmouth to visit The Green Grocer. The only thing they have going for them are their delicious organic muffins that they make daily. read more

Although sometimes the staff can be a little rude I love their selection. Everything you need is right there. I got some prepared food, a black bean wrap, wontons, and a corn and avocado salad. All of the items were amazing. The prices are a little steep but thats what you pay for fresh, wholesome food. The other major plus is that they have Kind Bars which I absolutely love and have a very hard time finding, especially in good flavors. They have a wide variety of them.
