I have had several A+ experiences at A Proper Fit. They understand how to fit all ages. They notice important features of your foot (like if you have bunions) and watch how you walk in the new shoes. My 94 year old mother had a wobble that I didn't notice. The fit expert noticed and got a different athletic shoe. They are honest. When the clerk realized I hadn't gotten the discount from the previous visit, she applied it to my account for my next purchase. Lastly, they bend over backwards to satisfy the customer. I recently bought two pairs of shoes at Proper fit. The young man that waited on me was very nice. Unfortunately, the one pair of shoes didn't fit, right. I decided to return them since they cost over two hundred dollars. I believe it was the owner wife that waited on me, she was very rude to me, and made me very uncomfortable. My wife needed custom orthotics to deal with a variety of foot problems. The orthotics necessitated getting new shoes with some very specific requirements. Proper Fit Footwear did an amazing job of finding exactly the right shoes with a perfect fit and this has made all the difference in her being able to walk again. Dumbfounded! I stopped in to spend $150.00 on a pair of nice Birkenstock sandals. I tell the sales woman what style, size and I sit down in a chair to take my shoes off. The saleswomen asks if I would move to a different chair in case another customer came in. She also told me I should not buy a new pair of Birkenstock sandals to go on vacation and they need to be broken in. At this point I just felt disrespected at the request about the chair so I got up and left the store. I called as I was driving out of the parking lot to let the owner know he just lost a sale and why. I was told he was busy and requested he call me. That was 2 weeks ago and he never bothered. Not only did he lose my business forever, I spent $150.00 at the Birkenstock store in Old Town San Diego. So much for supporting in-state and local businesses. What a waste of my time at this store. My husband and I were both referred for different issues to Mike here at A Proper Fit by our master pedicurist at Footprints to Wellness. My husband was referred there because he had hard calluses on his feet that were keeping proper foot care more difficult and uncomfortable. I was referred there because I recently developed sciatica and knew I probably wasn't wearing the best shoes to help with that. My husband asked for whatever the best shoe/orthotic is for his situation, but also slip-on, and vegetarian (no leather/suede), and they found him a great shoe and fitted him properly and with an orthotic. He wears them every day, and our pedicurist has pointed out the positive effect they caused with his calluses! I asked for whatever the best shoe/orthotic is for his situation, but also vegetarian (no leather/suede). He watched how I walked in my current shoes and looked at my arches, and concluded that the leg my sciatica is affecting is pronated inwards. He said I would need a shoe that was much stiffer than what I was wearing, to keep my ankle from leaning in, and with orthotics and an extra wedge for support, and he got me a great shoe first try. He even asked if I was in pain at that moment, that he could tell I was, so he was sensitive to that. They double checked no animal products used, only fabric. They're bigger than the type of shoe I'm used to wearing, but they're even a bit pretty. More importantly, they feel great and immediately seemed to take some of the more intense sciatica pressure off. I'm going to be wearing them every day too! He also recommended acupuncture and a chiropractor who can help with limb measuring. We also each purchased a pair of slippers that he recommended that offer the support we both need. We know confidently when we walk in, that Mike will take thorough time to assess what we best need, and that we will walk out with shoes that will make us feel great and last us a long time. We came here so that I could get a new pair of work boots. They offer brands such as Keen, Dansko and Uggs. They're not the cheapest shoes, but we have been very happy how they have been taking care of our feet. My Keen work boots have been the most comfortable work boots I've ever owned. I purchased my last pair here about 2 years ago. I wanted to get the same style and size but unfortunately they didn't have my size in stock. I was told they could order them and we be here in 7 to 10 days. So they looked up my size to verify from the last purchase. I think it's awesome that they keep a history of your purchases for reference. They will give me a call when they come in. Service has been great every time we come in. read more

I somehow forgot to replace my shoes (all of them!) for way too long and was having serious back pain. It was a little tricky for me to get here because of the hours but once I did- hooray! Casey (sp?) was amazingly helpful. I have orthotics so she was able to see what I needed - I'd tell her the general kind of shoe I wanted and she would disappear into the back and come back out with several pairs to choose from/try on. She spent over an hour with me, providing tons of advice and feedback. She was so patient! And helpful. I ended up getting walking/gym shoes, hiking shoes, and two pairs of cute Alegria shoes for work. My back feels SO much better!! The prices were completely reasonable for 'good' shoes and this store has a fantastic selection of shoes that are supportive but not ugly there are even some rainbow glitter Dansko clogs! I really wish they had fit! I'd been trying shoes from so many places- REI, Zappos, DSW, Amazon, Nordstrom Rack, Alegria online- it was driving me crazy. Next time I will just start with Casey! It will save me so much time and frustration and ultimately- money. Having good shoes is 100% worth it and A Proper Fit made it so easy. Very grateful! read more

I was so delighted to find a pair of shoes that were comfortable and fit my foot after my surgery. Unfortunately, I discovered the shoes had something popping up through the sole and while my orthotics would likely cover it, I didn't want to damage my expensive orthotics. Plus if I had to remove the orthotics due to foot swelling, this "pop" up would hurt my heal. So I called to ask them for an exchange. They insisted I come in so they could "fix" them. I had just spent $180 on a pair of new shoes. I didn't want them fixed, but exchanged for a new pair. Unfortunately, they didn't have my size in the store so I asked if they could order me a new pair for the exchange although they kept insisting I get them fixed instead. In the process, I was belittled for having no faith in their ability to fix shoes. I can understand getting shoes fixed after having them for a period of time, but these shoes had never been worn. It saddens my greatly that customers would be treated this way. So please beware. If you purchase from this store, I would be sure of what you want, inspect your shoes for any defects, and don't plan on doing any exchanges. And while the lady who helped me purchase them was lovely and very helpful, I will not be back after the way I was treated. Everyone deserves to get a brand new pair of shoes (especially for $180) without having to bring them in to get fixed before you even wear them. read more

I am a veteran and I have big feet! More so since wearing Army boots for years! So, now that I am older and suffering from Neuropathy in my Right foot, curled-up and lots of broken toes, and an ankle replacement, I have difficulty finding any shoes let alone ones that have a "toe" box, so I mainly wear sandals. The VA gives me one pair of inserts and shoes a year. I went to another place that "made" inserts for me, but they and the shoes I got never fit right. But this year I got to go here. What a neat experience. First off, I felt comfortable. I have to get men's shoes now, but Analie, Gladis, and Mike watched me stand, walk, and finally came up with the "perfect" PROPER fit. I now have inserts that work, because I needed a metatarsal pad. I hope to return here and find more types of shoes and watch their "sale" rack for some great deals. Fantastic customer service! I came in about 5pm on a Wednesday (during COVID CRAZINESS) looking for an inner sole to relieve my sore feet. Although I had newish sneakers (Hokas less than a year old) I discovered from my time here that the bottoms were already worn out and the size was too small. The nice lady set me up with some arch support insoles as well as some new sneakers by New Balance in a size and a half bigger than usual, along with some socks. I was immediately greeted by Annaleigh, she asked me what I was in for, what kind of shoe I was looking for, what kind of floor I worked on, how long on my feet, what my current shoes were, the whole 9 yards,l. She measured my feet and brought back 4 different options for me to try on. Asked me if I had any pressure or pain on any of my feet, had me walk around and feel the shoe out. Honestly, the attention to detail just for a work shoe was phenomenal. She told me that the shoe that you wear every day should be an investment so you don't develop any foot pain and problems when you get older, making sure you can walk comfortably by the time you're 50. I went in yesterday to look for a pair of shoes for my upcoming walking tour, and Chris helped me to select the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever worn. I say he helped me - it would be more accurate to say that he convinced me to try on yet another pair of shoes that turned out to fit my feet way better than the pair I had already made up my mind to buy. I've never met a more knowledgeable or helpful shoe salesperson. I have always thought that it was my job to break in new shoes until they were more or less comfortable. I have never had my feet measured or fit before, but knew I needed it. Jasmine greeted myself and my husband promptly and immediately saw to our needs. I was extremely impressed with her knowledge and competency. She informed me of some arch issues I didn't even know I had. What I thought I was doing to help my feet was actually hurting them. After Jasmine fit me with some insoles and shoes I was raving about how they felt to my husband who then decided to get fitted himself. Turns out he was wearing too small of a shoe and had a long arch. He got some new insoles and shoes as well. It's only been two days but already I can tell a huge difference in my shoes, foot pain, leg pain, and feeling supported when I walk. I highly recommend this locally owned place and Jasmine! She is incredible and competent. I'm thankful I chose to come here over a popular place nearby with several locations and more expensive prices! We have been coming to this business off and on for years since they were at there old location further north on Virginia Street. I am glad to see that they have been able to expand their product offerings in the larger space they now have in the Old Town Mall. They are truly a professional shoe store with staff who are knowledgable about getting the fight fit for the customer. They do not specialize in the trendy, strappy, instruments of torture that while more fashionable are woefully impractical for women who actually would like to be able to walk during the day. They do carry high quality casual, work athletic and business shoes in high end brands such as Dansko, Ugg, Birkenstock, Spira, Brako and Haflinger. My feet are happy, I am happy. read more

I came here to get a pair of work shoes, and I was told my shoes should be size 11, (which I have NEVER worn) as I have always comfortably been in a size 10. The sales lady insisted that I have to wear a bigger size because "it's more natural for the foot." I tried to refuse because that made no sense to me, but because I had my mother with me and she insisted, I bought them. Took my Woman in to get some steel toe work shoes after she was sold a bill of goods by another store. After she met with Analie she decided on a pair of low boots that fit correctly!! I have had issues with my feet my whole life. Arch problems that caused me to wear arch support inserts in my shoes for the past 35 years. Always have to be custom fitted. Always cost an outrageous amount of money. And in a couple years I have to get new ones. Well I have given up on that. I went to The Proper Fit Shoe Store and got the best service I could have ever hoped for. And the service was by multiple knowledgable people. Everyone that worked there knew what he hell they were talking about. I left the store so much happier than I was when I went in. I was able to buy two pairs or arch support inserts for less than half the cost of the good ol store in town. My feet feel better now than they have in years. I was informed about how shoe sizes work, the misconceptions and which brands offer certain widths, etc. But most of all, the experienced gentleman that helped me helped find me a perfect pair of shoes. One of the shoes he chose were exactly what I was looking for in a work shoe (waterproof with reinforced toe), as most other shoe stores do not offer heavy-duty and/or specialized shoes. He really knew the features of all the shoes on display. The selection of shoes in the store is enough to satisfy most people, especially some who want a specialized shoe or unusual size. As for who helped me, unfortunately I do not remember his name (it has been months since I was there), but he certainly went a long way to satisfy a customer. I was referred by my podiatrist to replace my worn shoes. I owe "A Proper Fit Footwear" a glowing review, however I don't want to write just another redundant 5-star pat on the back for high quality merchandise and competent fitting, all of which they deserve. What I want to highlight is my incredible experience of receiving expedited service. I had an Rx to build a shoe to compensate for my very short and crooked leg caused by a catastrophic injury 60 years ago. It was now Friday afternoon and I needed to have the shoes by Monday morning since I was going away for 7 months. Next day, Saturday morning, Mike, the owner, called to tell me to come and pick them up! I'm not saying everyone should ask for overnight service on a big job, but I do want to applaude the fact that he worked an extra long day to make my life better!
