Just unreliable. Gabe is a really nice guy who sounds passionate about his work but just can't deliver consistently. I asked him to make a bed. The first time he came to my house to deliver... unfinished/partially painted pieces. Went back to the drawing board. Brought back a great looking bed.. with somewhat off proportions (several inches wider and longer than a standard Queen mattress) and that SQUEEKED in every joint each time I would shift around while sleeping. Called and emailed around 10 times to set up a return/pickup/refund, which he originally offered when I pointed out the noise after the bed was originally assembled. No response. So, dropped the bed off at his workshop with one of his assistants. 3 months later and 2 calls and 3 emails sent to him about a refund. I got a hold of him from my sister's phone and he told me he'd have a refund for me in two weeks. That was 1.5 months ago. So, I yelp. I just don't know about the beds working out.. These guys might be great, but I'll never know. I asked them to copy a basic Mission-style platform bed, sent them pics, had a detailed conversation & email correspondence (apparently too detailed!), and asked for references. But the following week they turned down the job, saying "I have to avoid doing pieces for people who are looking for an excuse not to have us do them." I had actually cancelled an order for another bed just to work with them. I can't help wondering if the real reason they cancelled was my request for references. If I weren't working with them long distance, this wouldn't be an issue. But you've ever bought furniture based on a photo or drawing you know why I asked for a reference. Well, judge for yourselves: too busy to give references to a long-distance customer with a custom job could mean very busy with happy, satisfied customers, as they said they are, or it could mean unwilling to give references for other reasons. Full disclosure: The mistake on my side was probably sending a detailed email that was meant to be a recap of our phone conversation. This apparently gave them the impression (despite the photos I sent) that I was expecting something unrealistic (no doubt my attempt to be detailed came off as demanding), prompting them to say in their rejection email: "we build beds, not space shuttles or submarines." So it's your call: I'm a difficult, unreasonable prospect (look how long this review is!), or they're too shady and/or amateur and/or sensitive to give references. Or all of the above. I never found out whether it's worth the trouble to work with them - again, I want to be fair & say it might well be. I can imagine someone else, especially local, having a great experience with them, especially with their regular products. But maybe they're not ready for long distance custom jobs from total strangers, who if they're the kind who want a reference, would perhaps be better off working with a more established business. read more

Do NOT purchase anything from Reclamation Project! They took my money and I have yet to rcv my order. Gabe does not answer his phone or emails. I have never encountered such gross customer negligence. I am in the process of building a lawsuit... if anyone knows Gabe's last name I would be very grateful. read more

In August, I ordered a custom bed from A Reclamation Project. After five weeks of aborted delivery attempts (everything went wrong from the bed not fitting in their delivery vehicle to getting stuck in traffic), it appears that A Reclamation Project is no longer attempting to deliver the bed. I have received a full refund on the payment. But I did not request a refund. I assume the refund is their way of covering their tracks for backing out of the sale. Being denied the sale because a series of mishaps on their end no longer made it worth it for them to follow through is bad enough. Where this becomes extra dodgy is that the bed I custom ordered for 350$ is now being sold on A Reclamation Project's Etsy site for 600$ (the queen sized farm bed). In short, they have decided not to sell me the bed, to refund me, and to increase the price on the bed in order to make more money off a new Etsy buyer. I have attempted to contact A Reclamation Project several times via email and telephone in order to resolve this issue and all such attempts have been ignored. I have never interacted with a more poorly organised business. And while the repeated canceled delivery appointments were a big frustration and a big loss in terms of time and energy expended on my part, I put up with it because the product looked amazing and I wanted to make concessions for a small business owner. But now that they have disappeared and are selling the bed I custom ordered on Etsy for 250$ more than what I paid for it, it seems that they've crossed the line from merely being disorganised to being unethical. read more

I was truly hoping I didn't have to post a negative review about the Reclamation Project, but after waiting for three months to get the cal king bedframe and the three sets of slats (since I ordered three bedframes), and after countless unanswered emails and phone calls....well, it's time to just say it. Buyer beware. I was lured in by the thought of furniture made of reclaimed wood and the "mom and pop" quality of the shop. Unfortunately, after being told that mine was the largest single order placed and being assured my beds would be received by October 14, I am still waiting. And not only am I waiting, but I have spent so much time trying to contact Gabe, the owner, to no avail. I have heard nothing about my order since December 22, when I was told it was shipping. Of course, that was the third time I'd been told it was shipping, so I should've known better anyhow. Now I am spending my time trying to dispute the money I paid, in full, for an order that was never fulfilled. Having never met Gabe, but based on the conversations I did have with him, he seems like a nice guy, and I really really wanted this to work, but it shouldn't be this hard, and it shouldn't take this long. Good customer service is key, and for me, it wasn't so much that I didn't get what I ordered in time...even if it meant sleeping on the floor.-which I did. Gabriel was awesome! I had an antique table that I had put a water ring on. Gabe picked it up, fixed it perfectly, and delivered it back to me all within 24 hours! Great communicator,sensitive to it's age & provenance, and so quick! Great care & the price was very reasonable. Highly recommend!! read more

They may make great beds or they may not. I ordered a bed late last September. It took two months for me to receive it after much wrangling over the phone. When it finally arrived I was ecstatic. I started to unwrap it to find a beautiful bed but then... NO SLATS!. And not only that but the base board had a crack in it! I immediately called them. Gabe called me later in the day to assure me that they would send me a whole new bed with slats as soon as possible. About a month or two passed and still no bed. I sent and email inquiring about it and asked for a refund if they could not provide the bed. He assured me once again that he could provide it asap. Still no bed and now I can't even contact them. They don't return calls or emails. Gabe seemed liked a nice guy but I spent $400 on a product I essentially did not get. That is bad business and just dishonest. read more

Great bed and well made. Horrible communication, and very bad business acumen. Getting this bed to Chicago was a nightmare and a half. It took months when it should have taken a week or two at the most. Very difficult to get a hold of and couldn't get clear answers. Would not return phone calls and never provided tracking information as he promised he would. I told myself i wouldn't write a bad review once i finally got the bed and the ordeal was over. However it arrived without slats (which i requested NUMEROUS times). I wrote an email asking where the slats were with exclamation points at the end. I got back a nasty sarcastic email from Gabe. Claims he "express" shipped them. Its been about 3 weeks and haven't seen them or been given tracking info. If i lived in Santa Cruz i would definitely go to this shop and give them my business (so long as i could physically drive away with the product). I would never order again online or over the phone and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. It looks like their etsy shop is no longer up so maybe gabe decided the same thing as well. read more

I originally contacted them in September, it's now April and my bank finally got his bank to agree to forfeit the money so I got a refund - no help (again) from him. He's a liar and a scammer (he may also be a carpenter, but it seems no one will ever know). Stay away! read more

I am freaked out. We ordered out bed on Nov. 21st 2010. Several attempts at trying to get the bed. Next we will ask for our refund. I contacted our bank and it may be to late. I will turn them into BBB and Etsy (where I bought the bed). May sound nice over the phone, but nice now has givin into suspicion as that I have been ripped off. Like some of the other reviewers, I really did not want to write a bad review of this company but consumers should be warned. I ordered five items, only ever received 2 (and the night-stand was split) and have yet to get a refund after seven months of delays. What I did get was shoddily made. It's sad that people who are interested in small business and recycled furniture are being duped. Don't be one of them. read more
