I am getting up there in years and I enjoy going to estate sales with my adult daughters as a way to check out who I'd like to run my future estate sale. I wouldn't let these people in my house. They don't know how to politely answer any question. When I was at a recent sale two of the employees were fighting with each other. It was so awkward. The owner is just plain rude to her customers. Today going to their estate sale in the Arden area one of the most overpriced estate sales I've been to in some time. Lots of furniture that was average to good but a lot of it priced between $500 and $1,000 when you can get the same thing at Online Auctions or other estate sales for probably under $100. Even if they go half price on the last day I would say there pricing at Double what you would expect in a estate sale For average items. Even some of the trinkets were way overpriced. I have attended several of their estate sales and overall they have done a fair job. However, today I asked a question regarding the price of an item I had come in to see and the employee in the garage said, "It doesn't matter, it's sold." His tone was rude and dismissive. A more appropriate response would have been," I don't remember the price, I'm sorry" or " I'll try to find out for you." When I spoke to the ladies inside they were much more helpful and guided me to a similar item. read more

First they don't price everything. They want you to unbury the item and then they will price. They are overpriced at best. We went to a recent sale and after 4 days it was still very full. So here goes nothing. As you read this, be prepared for the owner to: a) respond and say not to listen to this review or b) that I am a competitor trying to take her reputation down. Folks...let's be real. That's not the case. I make enough money doing my normal job unrelated to this so I have nothing more except wanting to share with the public my first experience of dealing with this company. Full disclosure that I tried to do my best in advance to read over the reviews and even emailed the owner to ask if anything ever was pre-sold prior to the sale as I had some specific items i wanted and i did not want to waste my time (again, kindly note i am not a competitor). She claimed that if anything, the owners may take things from time to time. that's new. Looking forward to the sale, I get there to be one of the first ones in line several hours before the sale. Several people who came after me were all discussing the wariness of this company and her attitude and overpriced tactics she plays. Again, full disclosure I gave the benefit of the doubt. We proceeded to go through the garage. I search through the area from the picture in which the item was supposed to be there. NOWHERE to be found. The three other people after me who knew what I was looking for went to different parts the house and said they did not find it either. I walk up to the cashier with the most sincere voice and I politely asked. "Hey there, I was looking for xyz and was here a few hours early and could not find it...do you know what happened to it?" ...her response (and she seemed fearful of being retaliated) in a soft voice: "All i can tell you is it's not here"...me: "so was it pre-sold or did the owners take them?" she repeats: "All I can tell you is that it is not here for sale..." with a tone that basically sounded like there was something shady going on. I did not ask a crazy question and the fact that a simple answer was not provided in conjunction with her body language leads me to believe that there was something that shall not be spoken of occurred. I walk outside to the garage and look around. I found another item and a gentleman was helping people price and collect money. I approach him and ask how much for this abc and before he can help me, owner of the estate company comes out of thin air with an attitude that he does not know how to price item. My jaw dropped. he didnt know how to price an item? let me tell you that she priced the item I wanted at a 400% above what I could find on ebay. I politely declined and went home empty handed. I do $60 million dollar business ventures in my profession. And to be successful and to continue to have clients, it's really important to build trust and relationships and a good experience for everyone. Moral of the story and my impression of this company? Anyone who uses them to sell their estate NEEDS TO BE ON SITE so they know that the cash flow is accurate. Doing large business deals for many years, I can SMELL that the books are not balanced appropriately. Prove me wrong by asking them to provide an itemized pre-sell price and sold price and balance the book. Betcha can't! For those who wish to go to their events when they host? - Be prepared to know your item values - Be prepared to not take it personal if they are rude to you - Be prepared to not find the items in the pictures as they bait and switch. Notice that none of my three points above does not mention about the overpriced-ness of the estate sale. This is because I do have some respect and understanding that the first day is to try and maximize revenue as best as possible. So for that, I won't hate on and respect. However, to not have items shown in the picture is bologne. Let me put it this way. I'm well connected in this town and I reached out to the owners of the house. The items I was looking for? They sure didn't take. :-) I'll leave it up to our lovely readers to decide for themselves on who's telling the truth. Excellent Estate Sale! I've been to many sales hosted by various companies and have never been treated as fairly or respectful as I have by Valerie and her employees. The woman who is in charge made the estate sale far from being fun. Very rude demeanor and couldn't be bothered most of the time. The prices quoted were over the top. Full disclosure: I am not a customer of this company. Frankly , I never would be. This woman is rude, dishonest and treated my friend like garbage. The people who work for her are rude as well. One employee who worked outside actually called me a bitch when I stopped by to check on my friend (she isn't in good health) . He told me I wasn't allowed to be in there even after I explained that I wasn't there for the sale. On a side note: I did some digging and she (at the time of this instance) was being investigated. BEWARE! We hesitated for months to write a review but found ourselves losing sleep by not doing so. We believe it is unethical to be aware of a hazard and not send out a warning. After reading reviews, it appears the owner of this company, Valerie Johnson, is very familiar with gaslighting. So, a fabricated, defensive, accusatory clap back and full-out denial is expected. We decided to sell our home of nearly 25 years and relocate after we retired early and received a cancer diagnosis. We decided to sell almost everything we owned, downsize, and start fresh in another city. Our seven bedroom, 5 bath property consisted of a 3400sf home, two separate garages that housed four vehicles, and a two-unit apartment building on over an acre. We owned valuable antiques, collectibles, commercial and fine art, and high-end furnishings purchased and collected over a lifetime, we decided to save time and avoid unnecessary stress by hiring an estate sale company to liquidate our personal assets. Hiring THIS company, that was recommended by a trusted business colleague, was a HUGE MISTAKE! We made another HUGE mistake, but not reading all the negative YELP reviews before contracting with this company. At the end of the very stressful three-day "sale", we were prepared to divide the proceeds per her contract. Instead, Valerie Johnson, rapidly grabbed ALL THE MONEY, scurried out of our home, jumped in her truck, and sped off down our quiet cul-de-sac street where small children typically play without concern without saying a word about what we were owed. We called and texted as she was speeding down our street, but our calls and follow-up texts were ignored. We felt like we had been ROBBED IN BROAD DAY-LIGHT! Our shock and stress level was unbearable. We waited to no avail for Valerie to call or return to wrap up what we thought was an honest business transaction. However, when she refused to call, text or return to our home, we reluctantly decided to call the police and file charges of GRAND THEFT. It was days later, and only after the police was called, that we finally received a text (not a call) from Valerie to schedule an appointment to get our portion of the proceeds from the sale of our personal property. Although we requested to know the amount we would be receiving in advance of this meeting, Valerie refused disclose this information to us. It was an extremely awkward moment when Valerie finally returned to our home. She appeared cold, resentful, and bothered. We were shocked to learn our portion was only a mere fraction of what we expected to receive. She never thanked us for our business or showed any gratitude. After questioning the extremely low amount we received, she informed us that her company had no obligation to provide receipts for any items placed and sold in the quarter acre area of our backyard. Therefore, the price for everything sold in our yard was never disclosed to us, making it impossible for us to know exactly how much we were owed. This not only seemed unprofessional and unethical, but a questionable "business" practice the IRS, Consumer Affairs, and the BBB may need to investigate. A few of the items in the backyard included a large 14x12 canvas patio cover on a heavy-duty metal frame, a large ornate gazebo used for weddings, 13 6' round wooden party tables, padded over-sized outdoor lounge chairs, 6 teak reclining pool chairs, miscellaneous pool equipment and games, household items, sports car parts, garden tools, garden equipment including a mower, edger, and fertilizer, concrete statues, plants, and much much more! Valerie told us numerous times that she did not want us in our home at any time during the sale. We thought this was protocol, trusted her in our home in our absence, accommodated her request, and left our home during the hours of the sale. She appeared noticeably upset when she learned our 24-hour surveillance cameras were operating during the sale. We failed to understand why this was a problem since added security could have protected Valerie, her staff, and our personal property from possible harm, theft, or damage. Thankfully, we still have photographs of everything we placed in Valerie's care to sell for us. We strongly encourage anyone who would dare risk using this company to do the same. For a business that claims to be "professional," our experience with A Simple Solution Estate Sale Company was neither simple or a viable solution, but a NIGHTMARE! There is so much more we could say, but time does not permit. They were very understanding and kept their customers in order for when things finally started to open up. I was in a time crunch, as my elderly mother broke her hip, and could not live in her home anymore. I live 500 miles away and had a limited time to sell her home and belongings. A neighbor of my mom's recommended Valerie and her estate sale company. I called her, she was extremely knowledgeable, communicated well, and she knows her stuff! We have still not been paid and it looks like I will need to sue her for anything! Valerie is full of lies!!! She promises the world and then gives you nothing, literally! The last day of our sale was October 11th 2015 and her contract says we would receive payment within 30 days of that date. It is almost Christmas and the lies have stopped from Valerie because she no longer responds to any communications. I have even sent her a certified mail letter letting her know I will sue her if she does not pay and she has not responded. If I could rate her zero stars I would! If you are thinking about using Valerie with "A Simple Solution Estate Sale Company", run don't walk to the nearest exit and use any other company! We are not the only people she is doing this to. Most unprofessional group I have ever seen. They advertised photos of a Grarage with tools and fishing gear. I got up early and waited in line for a hour until they opened up so I could be first one to check out the stuff in the garage. I looked around and couldn't find any of the stuff that I saw in the photos. I asked the operator and she shrugged it off and said she didn't set it up and doesn't know what happened to the stuff. I also confronted the employee that was responsible for pricing everything in the garage. I pulled up the pictures on the ad that they posted and advertised across the internet. When I asked the guy he said he didn't know what happened to the stuff. Well they obviously sold a bunch of stuff prior to the sales. And if the family took it it's the same issue. Classic Bait and switch. You can't advertise things to draw people into your sale and when they show up it's unavailable or simply not there. This type of behavior from a "professional" is disgraceful and I won't be shopping at their sales anymore. Add this company to the list of dirt bags willing to screw over their customers. The already low reviews should shed light to potential clients and customers. We love going to Valerie's Estate sales. She is honest and forthright. She is fantastic with her pricing and customer service. We have been at her sales when the owners are there and they love the job she does. I got on here to add a review and read some of the comments and am amazed at how these people are so wrong and obviously making up things. How does this company only have 2 stars?! I go to about 5 estate sales a week on average (at more than a dozen different companies in the Sacramento area) and I ALWAYS make sure to hit up Valerie's sales if I'm out. We got a house last year and I've been slowly furnishing it- partially from Valerie's sales lol. When I arrive I'm warmly greeted by staff (usually with hugs lol), they all know my name and I'm always made to feel welcome. I really appreciate and enjoy going to her sales the environment she and her staff creates. Shes wonderful, her family is wonderful, her staff could not possibly be any nicer if they tried. The prices are always good, and she's always willing to negotiate. She'll negotiate more after the first day but she does begin negotiating and making deals even on day 1, which I can't say about many other companies. I have been going to Simple Solutions estate sales for at least 4 years. The last couple months things have changed, things are not priced, they are not properly set up and the prices are ridiculous!! The man in charge of yard quoted me a really high price on item ( I checked on internet) I decided to take it anyway to finish a project. I went to pay him and he doubled the price ??? The car that parked in front of me was fully loaded with merchandise they did not pay for. (One of the employees was yelling at the people in the car to pay for the stuff they took. Went there around 9:30 this morning. Sale was supposed to start at 9 but overheard the woman tell another shopper the cashier wasn't there yet so they couldn't check out. The customer was paying with cash but the woman said she couldn't check her out because sales tax needed to be added and she didn't know how to do that. Put my things back and left. I'd be pretty angry if I hired this company to host my sale as 9 am on a Saturday is prime shopping hours for this type of sale! read more

After my Aunt fell very ill and could no longer live alone we thought it best to hire an estate sale company to assist with liquidating items that she would no longer be able to keep, considering she would be downsizing from a 3200 sq ft house to living with a relative. We found Valerie Johnson, owner of A Simple Solution Estate Sale Company based out of Carmichael, CA; who seemed to be quite professional upon meeting and knowledgeable in Estate sales. Valerie sold her business very well, ensuring us that she handled everything such as pricing, staging and of course most important advertising. Not only did she ensure us that hiring her would help maximize our sales she let us know that she has quite a following of customers that faithfully go from estate sale to estate sale and are big buyers. Considering that we had to deal with the health of my Aunt we thought that it be best to focus on getting her well and letting a professional take control. What a huge mistake that turned out to be. On the first day of the sale I showed up and the first thing that I noticed that there were no directional signs leading into the sale. My aunt lives in Gold river and there are rules that need to be followed when having any type of estate sale. Valerie was made very clear of those rules. It is a gated community with a locked gate and she was to make arrangements with the home owners association to have the gate held open and to pick up directional signs leading people to the sale. Valerie did neither. When I pulled up to the gate there was a small paper that had the gate code on it, but the gate was closed. When asked why they had no directional signs they stated that they didn't get them because there was a deposit and they were not willing to put out that money. The deposit is returned upon return of the signs. If you are a business owner there are costs that you have to put out to properly run your business. Later we found out that she showed up so late to pick up the signs that they had none to actually give her. After getting to the sale there was ONE hot pink hand written sign (no wonder Gold River home owners don't allow this type of advertising) on the garage. When I walked in to inspect the look of the house I was very disappointed as there was no order, items were still in boxes, and there was no display so that people didn't have to dig through things. Not only was the house not organized, the pricing was a joke. The item that sticks out the most in my mind is the floating duck in the pool used to hold chlorine tablets, priced at $25.00. You can buy a brand new one for $12.99 at lowes. Since her contract states that she get's to keep all items that are not sold I believe that this is part of her scam. Price things so high that there will be more left over for her to do what she pleases. I decided to purchase something to see how it was all handled and was surprised to find out that they charged sales tax, but only on items sold in the house. Not sure what that is all about. Valerie was not in attendance at the sale because she was at a HUGE sale that she kept bragging about in Sonora. If you read Kristin K.'s review you will see how that turned out. This woman is consistent in one thing and that is scamming and preying upon people who are in emotional distress. Our estate sale took place over 60 days ago and we have not had payment and Valerie will not return phone calls, emails, or text messages. It has become very clear that she has no intention of paying the money that is owed. There is absolutely NO reason that it should take this long considering that this is a cash only business. What Valerie and her family run business are doing is straight criminal and she HAS to be stopped. Getting my Aunt the money she is owed has now become second priority, as now the goal is to stop Valerie and her family from hurting any more families that are already deeply hurting. I urge you if you have already had a sale with Valerie and are experiencing this same type of treatment to contact us. You can send a direct message here on Yelp. This company liquidated the personal property of my mother's in September 2015. The contract between Valerie Johnson and my mother stated the account would be settled, all payments made, within 30 days of the sale. It has now been over 60 days and Valerie Johnson has not paid my mother anything, has not returned numerous phone calls or emails. Be aware of this fraud artist. * I would like to add that she "bought" one of our oriental rugs at the end of the sale. I am now changing that to she "STOLE" our rug. 1/3/16 Update: NO PAYMENT RECEIVED TO DATE 1/23/16 Update: A partial payment has been received although Valerie claims it's "paid in full": Valerie's account statement indicates total sales of $2,808.28 while my tabulation of the sales receipts, which she gave me at the end of the sale, indicates $3,998.03. This difference of $1,189.75 leaves her owing my mother an additional $594.87. Without her immediate attention, our next correspondence is to the district attorneys of Calaveras and Sacramento counties, and small claims action against her individually. I feel the need to write a review based on the prior comments. I have been to their sales a couple times. They were okay. What does alarm me is the fact that in their contract it says they can keep what is not sold during the sale. This is a TOTAL conflict of interest. What is the incentive to sell at 50% when you can have it at the end for 100% of the value? I have an estate sale company in another part of California (non competitor) and we are hired to liquidate the estate AND to make as much money for our client as possible. That should always be a liquidation company's priorities. If they are not trying to liquidate on the final day by slashing prices, something is fishy! We have a charity come take what is left at the end (which is not much) and our clients are provided with a donation receipt. read more

That sale was a last-minute sale in a crowded outbuilding, and not at all representative of the usual sales. Val always makes the effort to give reasonable prices on the items. My wife and I go to all of Simple Solutions estate sales and love the staff that Valerie has working there. We love the prices as well. We have seen so many people rush in like its a fire sale and practically ask garage sale offers on nice things and when they get told no i see them storm out. What a joke! How in this world a company can stay in business with ethics like this is beyond me. Shame on me for not doing my homework on YELP first! I saw the listing on estatesales.net, The sale looked great, lots of stuff listed for the Yuba City area. Yuba City is 2 hours from where I live. I got up at 2:00am in hopes I would be the first in line to get a highly prized and well photographed sewing machine! I pulled up to the house and parked, I was so happy to be the first to arrive! Hurray And joy running happy songs in my head! Got my chair and blanket set up on the porch, it was a little chilly at this time of Day. I waited in my car until I saw others starting to show up. At 5:30 I headed to my chair, the one I placed a few hours earlier to secure my first place position I was so happy to have! Around 6:00 someone in the house started to stir. About 20 minutes later he greeted the few of us on the porch. A little chit chat to find he was the owner. Then I asked him........can you direct me to which room the sewing machine is? He then said to me, are you ready for this one? Remember, pictures of the sale contents were plastered all over the internet. He says" I'm sorry, my Son took it out a few days ago" I couldn't believe it, I said, are you kidding me? What kind of sale is this? What kind of seller allows this type of behavior! Well, he did say he was sorry..... but that doesn't put $50 of gas back in my car, I'm sorry, doesn't get me the machine I got up in the middle of the night on a weekday to purchase. I hold the estate sale company liable as I've never seen this type of bs action before. He took my number and said he would call me because he knew someone that has one I could buy. I told him I didn't want one at a retail price, that's why I was there at 4:00. At 6:15am I took my chair and left. The others in the line were as shocked and speechless at and how this could happen as much as I was. The seller Valerie is responsible for the BAIT AND SWITCH tactic. Valerie A. Johnson (A Simple Solution Estate Sale Company), You came into my house on September 18th to hold an estate sale. You told me that you would be there at 8:30 am that morning so that the sale could be started at 9am. You did not call until 9:04 am and you did not show up until 9:26 am. You came into my house angry as ever that I let in customers into my house. Your relative set up an accounting site within the premises of my house and took recordings of the household belongings. You, however, took control of the garage and the outside of the house (where most of the belongings were) in which there were absolutely no recordings. Your "friends" came in and took thousands of dollars worth of items outside while your family kept us preoccupied inside the house. As I saw your "friends" take hundreds of boxes outside and load their trucks with the items you sold from the outside and the garage, you took cash from them and pocketed it in your pants. You were constantly in your truck in which you parked right next to the garage for no reason at all. You sold one item for $200 which was worth $500 but you only came up with $272. I lost thousands of dollars and you and your "friends" stole it all. Please give back every single item or give me the money that is owed. I have a list of the things lost and I am sure it is not even a portion of what was lost. Thousands of dollars were lost. Please return the items or the money. If i do not hear from you in 10 days, I will be taking you to court. read more
