This past week Tony and his wife replaced a faulty water shut-off valve in the basement. I actually enjoy both of them because we have several things in common, starting with kids and dogs. This was not an emergency, I did not need to do it immediately, and I was more than happy to let them pick the day and time for the job. The heater itself was covered under warranty, so that cost was zero. The labor cost however, was a staggering $1600 for 3 hours. Now, I'll be transparent: I did not ask for a quote beforehand, as I did not expect a heater swap to be so highly priced, and Hampel did not offer a quote. For reference, plumbers in the St. Louis area typically charge $35-$130 per hour (source: Angi). At 3 hours, that's roughly $105-$390 for the job. Home Depot charges approximately $325 for basic water heater installation labor. Lowe's comes in around $200-$400. I paid $1,600. To their credit, after I raised the issue, Hampel did offer a $200 discount, bringing my total down to a still-impressive $1,400 for a 3-hour labor-only job. That's roughly $467/hour. The work itself was excellent. The water is hot. I have no complaints about the plumbing. Only about the invoice. If you use Hampel, and plenty of people do, I would simply suggest asking for a written quote before work begins that breaks down every single line item.
