I booked my appointment online using the scheduling link shared within the gift card. I added on an additional service so I anticipated that there would be a remaining balance to pay. Once my service was finished, I was brought up to the front desk and asked to pay for the full amount of my service plus the additional service that I added. I explained that I had booked using a gift card and I understood I would need to pay for the additional service that I requested. They insisted that my gift card was expired and that I wasn't able to use it. This is INSANE as I just received the gift card a few months ago. After arguing with me for about 10 minutes, they insisted I pay via Venmo and did not allow me to use my credit card. They then stopped me and insisted that I send an additional tip. I will never be returning to Ocean Spa.

Many of the therapists I connected with moved on. My most recent experience simply was not the right fit. I did not feel fully heard, and the session felt more rushed than mindful. After the session, there was no follow up or check in at all, which has never happened in any of my previous experiences here. I was tired of bouncing around, so I gave it time to see if things might improve. In the end, she agreed it was not the right fit. What was most disappointing was how it was handled. It took several calls, emails, and texts from me to learn that my sessions had been canceled less than 24 hours before my next appointment. The front desk told me the owner was supposed to call me about the cancellations and to suggest an alternative therapist, but that call never happened, and there was no follow up afterward. There was also a brief moment that stood out. I had left more than 20 percent, though less than the week before because the experience felt different. When I shared that, it was suggested that the front desk might not have passed the full amount along. That surprised me, as the front desk team has always been consistently kind, professional, and trustworthy. I want to be clear that the front desk staff are excellent. They make scheduling seamless, communicate thoughtfully, and create a welcoming environment every time you walk in. I am writing this because I cared about this place. I used to genuinely look forward to coming here. Moving on feels like losing something familiar, almost like losing a friend. I would still welcome a one on one conversation with the owner, as I would have appreciated that before. I hope the practice finds its way back to what once made it so special.

It appears that the professionals in the suite do not employ a receptionist (there is no front desk) and that they just buzz in clients in between their appointments. I thought this was rather inconvenient because I arrived about 20 minutes early and had to wait outside in the rain because no one responded to my buzz (I assume Kate was with another client). I would definitely give Kate five stars on the massage, but I am not sure I'd return because of the office set up. I'd prefer to go to a spa or someplace with a reception area where I can relax a bit before the massage.

I felt pretty great from other massage therapists in the area, but I feel fantastic when I'm done with Emily. She was able to hone in on bad spots in my shoulder's nerve causing some numbness in my fingers, help one of my ribs go back to the right place, and almost put me to sleep when she massaged my head and neck. She doesn't have a static routine she works through every visit. She will get everywhere you ask, but she has a talent to find out where you need it most. But... I think I finally found my masseuse guys. She gave me the best massage I've had in YEARS. Why would going deep in a particular area of my shoulder cause my left foot to tingle? Why is the slight lower back pain I've had for months now gone after she fixed a weird alignment thing in my right hip I didn't even realize was there, but that she felt? Why is it 3 days later and I still have that buttery calm post-massage feeling (I showered, I promise, so it's not that!)? She uses yummy smelling natural stuff like coconut oil and shea butter with essential oils - no mystery chemical smells while the massage is going on. Her space in Arlington is relaxed and clean and homey. I've mostly gone to more spa-like environments for massages and wasn't sure what this would be like, but I can say the coziness and warm lighting was preferable! All that said, she could move her practice to the #1 bus stop in Central Square and I'd probably still go see her. That's how good she is. She is a truly special talent in this field and I'll be going back as often as my wallet allows it :)

I have since recommended her to a lot of friends, and they have all enjoyed her as well. The building is pretty, though it does have flights of stairs if that is a concern for you. There is usually plenty of free private parking in the back of the building (at least there has been when I've gone after work during the week), which relieves parking stress. The lobby of the building has complimentary teas and water which helps when it's warm or cold outside. Abi is attentive and starts each session by asking what you'd like to focus on, and pays a lot of attention to what you'd like to achieve. She is very aware and considerate of scrapes and bug bites and the like, and adjusts to fit feedback well (I get ticklish sometimes since I have nerves that are unhappy some places, and she's always adjusted immediately when I've mentioned it's tickling). There's always relaxing music to listen to. Occasionally I get into deep relaxation during a session and I leave those feeling completely rejuvinated, my mind having wandered off into daydreams and plans, and working out what I'd like to achieve in the coming weeks. Abi is easily booked online which helps me fit massage into my schedule! She is very warm, caring, and I leave feeling consistently refreshed and with more freedom of movement. She also is knowledgeable of TMJ issues (among many massage techniques), which I have been struggling with, which was an added bonus to find out! I've felt extremely comfortable, and recommend Abi highly to anyone. LGBTQ/etc friendly and consent-aware, which is lovely too. Looking forward to more visits soon!

As for the massage, I had never had a Thai massage before, so I didn't know what to expect but I think Mary made a convert out of me! It was totally different than anything I've had before. It started with me laying on my back, on a shiatsu mat on the floor, then Mary proceeded to not only massage me but also place me in a variety of stretches that were both challenging and deeply relaxing. By the end I was in a dream-like state, feeling calm and restored, ready to go back into the world. I never feel rushed, and am always invited to hang out, have some water, and chat until I'm ready to go. She makes sure I get the amount of massage time I came for, sometimes running over. I have since come back for more 90 minute sessions, especially if I know I'm going to have a rough week ahead of me.
