This tour is an OUTSTANDING experience! I've been on many tours in different cities and can attest that this one competes for top spot easily. The 'Queen' was our guide and she totally made this Memphis trip a memorable one. Even though I've been to Memphis a few times, I've never had someone provide depth to the city's history and culture that is out in the open but not really seen. What an incredible experience from start to finish! I just got back to my hotel but wanted to leave a review right away spreading the word about this fantastic tour company. I chose to do the History Tour and Civil Rights Museum Combo. The tour begins at the Tennessee Welcome Center which is very easy to find. We walked there however I believe they also offer free parking. Our tour guide was very easy to find thanks to the shuttle saying the company name on it. Caroline aka Queen was our guide and she greeted us with nice big hug. She is extremely friendly and I know it would be a fantastic day. Now keep in mind before getting to the tour I was a bit tired as we had been up since 5am in order to take a greyhound from Nashville. However at no instance did Queen ever make us tired again. She is so fun, full of energy, and interactive. She played music along the way, had trivia questions and keeps you very entertained along the whole ride. The tour with her is split up in two halves with the civil rights museum being in the middle. The museum is self guided and I learned quite a good amount of history there I had never known. However I was more fascinated with how much info Queen knew about history and literally anything and EVERYTHING about Memphis. She taught us about civil war history, blues history, about Dr King, and many other important spots around town. She engaged with all of us and always knew how to keep things rolling. I have never been more entertained, intrigued, and felt a personal connection with a tour guide. She truly cares about her company and making sure everyone has a more than fantastic experience. It even started raining after our tour and she offered to drive us up to our hotel! Such a sweet gesture! Highly recommend and I will definitely be booking with her in the future! Our tour guide, Miss Jackie, brought history to life with her detailed knowledge of black history and information about the city's colorful history. Carolyn treated us like royalty while on the Tour of Possibilities. My niece and I visited Memphis for the first time in mid-March, and figured this would be a great way to take in some history. She was very knowledgeable and thorough about the city and even pointed out some current establishments that we should patronize, due to their roots in the African American community. She of course highlighted the Civil Rights Movement throughout her talks and Martin Luther King Jr.'s pivotal role. We were even able to go to the church and set foot in the same pulpit that MLK gave his last speech. So breathtaking and inspiring to say the least. One word sums up this tour; "A-maz-ing!" The tour guide "Queen" was phenomenal. We received an overview (name of the tour) of Memphis, learned more information than I thought possible in 2 hours, and met new friends along the way. No, we did not actual "tour" the museums (the tour would be exhausting AND take about 6 hours) but you can go back on your own and pace yourself. This was a fantastic tour! We are greeted by the owner, who goes by "The Queen," with a huge hug, a bright smile and an enormous amount of warmth. We saw so much of Memphis (as tourists, the tour really helped us get our bearing) and learned just as much, too. I think most people know about Dr King being killed in Memphis, but there is also so much more to know about civil rights and African Americans in Memphis. We even got to stand in the exact spot MLK stood to give his "I've been to the mountaintop" speech. Chills! One of the best experiences we have had with a tour company. I had to call Caroline at the last minute to change our tour date. She was super and luckily was able to move us to a late Saturday afternoon time, when they normally don't do tours. Kenon Walker picked us up and it was just the three of us, making it a very personable and intimate experience. After talking we realized we had met him the night before as he also works at the Peabody Hotel where we are staying. The three of us felt like it was one of those "meant to be experiences" I really appreciated ATOP's flexibility and the fact that Kenon was able to take us on a tour AFTER he had just dropped off a family of 9. If Kenon is your tour guide with ATOP you will be in good hands; I would describe him as a modern Memphis renaissance man. He is an actor, a film maker, an educator, a concierge and a tour guide. He has worked at the Civil Rights Museum, helped design the Stax Museum tour and is passionate about history, the African American legacy in Memphis and sharing it with others. Oh, and a very warm and down to earth guy. One of our first stops was the last remaining auction "rock" where slaves were auctioned off. There is no marker or plaque, just a flat stone protected by an wrought iron fence. But this place and Kenon's vivid description of the slave auctions will always stay with us. This place should be marked with a memorial remembering the stolen lives and human misery. When we went to the Mason Temple where Martin Luther King made his last sermon, Kenon played the video of the opening moments of that speech where King seemed to have a premonition that his time on earth was coming to an end. It was very powerful and moving. We wanted to see something of Memphis outside of the tourist designed downtown and ATOP takes you there. We enjoyed seeing Soulsville, in South Memphis and also where Stax is located. It's just a regular neighborhood, with folks living their lives. We were with Kenon for almost three hours and we were left hungry for more. Luckily we have two more days in Memphis to follow up on some of his suggestions and the rest of our lives to think about the history of this place and it's place in America today. One last practical detail; my husband has limited mobility due to replacement hips and knees. This tour was perfect for him as we got out a few times to see particular places, he was able to be engaged and enjoy without being uncomfortable physically. read more
