A Uno and its companion shoe store offer a refreshing assortment of women's styles and designers. While some of the names are familiar -- Marithe et Francois Girbaud, for instance, many of the designers are unusual. The Icelandic knitwear brand Elm Designs is one you don't see anywhere else. The clothes tend to be more arty than trendy, so the look is definitely more downtown than uptown. Or rather, more downtown, the way downtown used to be. The companion shoe store (two doors down from the clothing store) offers unusual shoes that are not carried widely, like Trippen, Robert Clergerie, Cydwoq, Tentazione and Yosuke Yajima. The offerings are light on stilettos, and heavy on flats, platforms and wedges. So, if you're looking for an outfit for an art opening or museum show, come to A Uno. I found A Uno by accident yesterday and I am so glad I did! The styles are fabulous and the variety of styles is great. The clothing is very high quality and unique, prices are high but totally worth it. I know I'll wear the dress and jacket I bought for years and years. The fabrics are gorgeous and the craftsmanship is excellent. The dress I bought is hand stitched and quilted- gorgeous! The woman in the store was very friendly and helpful and she encouraged me to try on things I otherwise wouldn't have - and I bought two gorgeous items I wouldn't have even tried on without her guidance. It was such a fun experience overall and I am so thrilled with my purchase. I haven't bought anything I've been excited to wear in years-- until yesterday! read more

I have been making semi-annual pilgrimages to see Ruthy Byers at A Uno Tribecca for over 10 years now and as always, I leave with a shopping bag full of beautifully designed clothing from European designers like Rundholz, Elm, a bene (their new, in-house designed line), Girbaud and more. Ruthy has an incredible eye and is an excellent seamstress for any alterations you require. She is the very definition of exceptional customer service - she always picks out perfect pieces to suit my body type and personal style. The clothes I have bought here over the years always become my signature pieces that I wear again and again. They are often asymmetrical and always unique and memorable. When I arrive in New York my first stop is always A Uno to see Ruthy. She is amazing! She never leads me astray, she selected two pair of pants for me 4 years ago with the words " these are the most amazing pants, you will love these." I wasn't so certain at the time. I am so happy she said that, because to this day they are all I want to wear. I still love them after all these years. A Uno has an amazing selection of clothing that I build my wardrobe from every year. Ruthy knows what I like, what I already have and how to keep me current. I don't like to shop, so when I find a place that has clothing I really like -- well-made, stylish, comfortable, original, and offbeat (I have a weakness for the asymmetrical) -- I'll return to it over and over. A Uno has just become that store for me, and I'm a lifelong New Yorker. Prices are high for my budget but I've found terrific stuff on sale, and these are the clothes that I reach for time and again,no matter what the occasion..
