We hired Jeff to service our fireplace after noticing a strong gas smell after turning the fireplace on. Jeff came out and right away said we're missing a lintel. He said the lintel is what keeps the fumes, gas, and exhaust from recirculating into the living space. And, this is the likely cause of our gas smell. He installed the lintel quickly and says we're all good to fire up the fireplace that night. We turned on the fireplace that night and after 10 mins, the fireplace walls were on fire. We turned off the gas and noticed a small fire burning in the flue, requiring a fire extinguisher to extinguish. I called The Gas Company the next day for an emergency inspection. The technician came out and red tagged our fireplace. He stated that A1 Chimney should have caught this, easily. read more

If I could give negative stars, I honestly would. This guy is a a hack job. DO NOT HIRE. he'll take your money and run. We had a bad chimney leak and he quoted us $220 to cover the chimney cap and recaulk the chimney flashing which is outrageously expensive but my wife wanted him to do it because she doesn't want me on the roof anymore which I understand. But this guy "guaranteed" that his repairs would solve our problem COMPLETELY. And he gave us a "5 year warranty". Well, his repairs in fact did NOT fix the issue. When I contacted him to come back out, he dodged my phone calls 7 times. Sent him 7 texts. Then he finally gets back to me saying he "promise I'll call you back tonight before 9pm" again, he in fact did NOT call back that Friday night. I had to contact him an 8th time on Sunday to which he says "we did our job" and a bunch of more nonsense. The repair he did on the chimney cap did NOT cover the cap. He used some cheap scrap metal aluminum that is worth $20 and 2 tubes of caulk and charged us $220. He was very willing to come to us when we were going to pay him but completely non existent when we had issues. So much for a fucking warranty and standing behind your work. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! If I could give ZERO stars, I would. There is a persistent theme amongst clients based on these reviews: Jeff is not competent at his job, does not honor his warranty, and simply gaslights his clients for "deferred maintenance" or not contracting with the right professionals (which on all accounts appears to be false). We also did not have a positive experience with Jeff/A-1 Chimney. We called Jeff out to inspect a leaking fireplace. His recommendation based on his inspection was to replace our existing shroud. He temporarily covered the shroud with plastic bags, yet we were still experiencing water penetration into our living-room from the chimney despite it being covered in plastic- this made me question whether a new shroud was actually going to get to the root of the problem. At this point, I explicitly stated I wanted to make sure he was "100% positive" that the shroud was the issue before paying for a new one. Our roof was less than a year old AND recently inspected 6 months prior (since we had just purchased the home that year) so a roofing issue was ruled out. He stated he was confident the new shroud would address the problem and offered a "guarantee" if it did not. After his "repair" (i.e., replacement of the shroud), come the next rainy season we continued to experience the same problem. When I contacted him to notify him of the persistent problem of water intrusion from the chimney on the same side (leaking onto the living-room floor), he sent an apathetic and unapologetic response indicating he is unable to help due to do 'family health issues' and the implication of a shortage of cash (stating "some kind of getting cash now so not sure how I can help you"), further stating he 'can't help' us because "EVERY fireplace in Orange County is leaking from rain going heavy and sideways" (what an absurd statement from a "chimney professional"!!) and then indicated I need to close my damper (which was in fact closed). I explained our other chimney wasn't leaking and not a single one of my friend's or neighbor's chimneys were leaking! (yes we took a survey and asked!). He stated he would have someone come by to take a look; the next week I simply found a business card left on our doorstep with illegible notes written on the back; I texted him a picture of the card/notes and stated it looked like someone from his company came by; I stated that their notes/handwriting was illegible and asked him for clarification on what it said, as well as whether he was coming back to address the problem- I NEVER heard back from him!! The fact is: 1) he did not address the problem, 2) was very difficult to communicate with/get a clear answer from, 3) charged us an exorbitant amount of money for a new shroud, and 4) did not honor his warranty. Thankfully our general contractor was able to easily get to the root of our problem and fix it for us! read more

I started out wanting to give Jeff the benefit of the doubt given that he has a lot of positive reviews as well as some very negative ones. I chalked the negative reviews up to just people who like to complain and decided to give Jeff a call. On the phone, he seemed very knowledgable and friendly and I thought he would be the perfect guy to help, so we set up an appointment for him to come and do some masonry repair on my fireplace, install a chimney cap and possibly convert a fireplace to fire glass. Jeff was prompt at confirming the date and answering questions via text. He set an appointment window for today between 11:30am - 12:00pm. Jeff even confirmed the night before. Again, everything seemed good. At 12:00pm today, the end of the window he had given to arrive, Jeff texted and said he would be another 30 minutes because he was finishing up another job. I said "no problem" and thanked him for letting me know that he was running late. At 1:15pm, he still hasn't arrived and I haven't heard anything else so I tried to call and check by phone. Jeff didn't answer so I asked him via text for an update on his ETA. About 10 minutes later I get a text from an unknown number saying that I have been rescheduled for Saturday. No call from anyone, no explanation, no "hey dude I'm sorry but do you mind if we reschedule?". Just a text informing me that we have been rescheduled to a date when I am out of town. Needless to say I am a bit perturbed given that I've taken off work and stayed home all morning to be here for this appointment. I ask Rene(sp?), who apparently works for Jeff and who sent me the text about rescheduling, to call me. Rene calls a few minutes later and mumbles something incoherent about not really knowing what the reason is but I had to be rescheduled. I replied that it was not cool to do that to someone who had been waiting all morning and who had confirmed the night prior, especially without an explanation or attempt at an apology. Again, more incoherent mumbling from Rene so I asked her to have Jeff call me. I never received the call from Jeff, the "Proud owner of A-1 Chimney Service since 1989" so I sent him a text telling him I was disappointed that he never showed up and didn't even bother to call to explain, after confirming last night and telling me he was on his way to my home today. About 2 hours later I get a rude text from Jeff saying his secretary was supposed to call me...well, she didn't call. She just sent a text informing me I had been rescheduled. He mentioned about some debris getting in his eyes and then writes to me "What part of this do you not understand?" Really???... to not show, not call, not text, not offer an explanation other than having your secretary send a text that I've been rescheduled and then cop an attitude about me not understanding something he assumes his secretary told me. No wonder he has some really negative reviews. Jeff, I think there is something called "customer service" and consideration that YOU don't understand. I informed Jeff that his secretary didn't explain anything, just sent the rescheduling text. I also informed him I didn't need his help any longer and will be looking elsewhere. I wished him luck and said I was moving on. Buyer beware, if you catch Jeff on a good day he might do a good job for you but if not, you may be waiting around all morning like I did, with nothing but a bad attitude from the proud owner of A-1 Chimney Service, when he's asked to explain why he didn't show up as promised. Raccoons were trying to get into the chimney on a two story house. Called Jeff at A1-chimney and he was there in the morning ASAP. HE completely checked all the aspects of the chimney including making sure no animals had crawled inside the chimneys. Firemen had ripped the inside components out, so I had no idea what I was dealing with and thought it would be super expensive to fix. It's unbelievable that this company has 4+ stars. A technician came out for $99.00 to inspect why my fireplace igniting system wasn't working and told me it was dead and needed a whole new system installed for $1,000.00. He wouldn't tell me the separate costs of the unit and the labor. He wouldn't take a credit card. I had to Venmo him the $99.00. He left my fireplace a dirty mess behind. The next day my husband and I tinkered with the remote and the fireplace started working perfectly. It might have been a loose battery but I asked for a refund for a bad tech who didn't even know what the unit was so I could shop prices for a replacement. He said I have to buy a new fireplace. What does that mean? I tried contacting the comany for two days and they finally got back and denied my $99.00 refund. What a scam. My husband and I are in our 70's. Elderly people seem to be a target to take advantage of but we're not stupid. The supervisor and owners refused to talk to me. They must be too busy collecting customers and sending out techs who don't know what they're doing and repeating this dishonest operation. I happen to be a victim. Beware!!! read more

The A1 Team of Shane, Roger and Thomas returned after our new hearth had been delivered. They moved the wood stove and they took a look at what was under the old hearth. I had a large piece of the new carpeting to replace the old carpet under the old hearth and they suggested that I have the carpeting guys come to lay and glue the new carpet in place before they attempted to assemble the stove on the new hearth. They said that they did not mind returning and just wanted it to be done right and that was the best way. They also said that they would not charge me for the extra trip!! Wow!! So, they set the wood stove on the new hearth to the side wall out of the way. I was able to schedule the carpet guys to come back and install the new carpet in the stove spot within a week. And a few days later, Shane, Roger and Thomas came back to install the new hearth. As I have a manufactured home, the stove draws its air from below the house in the crawl space. This was quite the project as a hole had to be drilled into the new hearth to match up with the stove and the hole already in the floor. They measured at least 5 times to be positive it would all line up correctly even watching to match the pattern of the stone hearth. They cut a large square piece of metal as a barrier between the floor and the carpet for the pipe to go into as there had not been one. They worked as a team and had it all installed and on the new hearth! Shane noticed that the ground wire was not correct, so they put in a correct grounding wire that is to today's code on my 1983 Kent wood stove. I just need to tell you that A1 Chimney is amazing! They make sure that everything is done and done correctly and to code! The team of Shane, Roger and Thomas cannot be beat! They are friendly, knowledgeable and will work with you to complete your projects correctly and in a timely manner. I will be sure to call them when it is time to clean my new chimney! Thanks Guys!! I normally do not leave reviews, but this experience was so poor that I felt obligated to post a review to warn future potential customers. Jeff originally came recommended to us, so my wife and I hired Jeff and his team to disassemble and clean up my gas fireplace, sweep the chimney and to stain the interior brick with a matte black finish. At the time, they appeared to do decent work, however Jeff was very difficult to understand and left the job after a few hours while his younger workers finished up that afternoon. The workers made a mess of the job and left it unfinished and unsealed, as the matte black stain residue was coming off everywhere (Jeff said that the finish sealer would bond the stain to the brick and no residue would come off). Plus, his workers didn't do a professional job, as red brick was showing through the stain in dozens of places. After leaving unreturned voicemails on Jeff's phone, I then emailed Jeff a couple days later and got an email response later that same day. After Jeff suggested to have his workers come out to finish, I asked him to personally come out to finish the job, since the quality would likely not meet his standards. He agreed and came out the following week... and the same exact thing happened. He left the job before it was complete, left his workers there to finish, then called his workers to come to another job shortly thereafter. My wife was very unhappy, as the stain still did not cover up all the red brick showing through the finish and looked tacky. She asked them to stay and finish the job, but they said they had to go. She asked if they could at least leave the stain and applicator materials for her to finish, which they did before they left. She then spent 2 hours finishing the stain properly!! The only problem is that the finish still was not sealed and came off anytime it was touched. I called and left Jeff 2 unreturned voicemails, then emailed Jeff 3 more times over the next week, which (now 2 weeks later) have not been returned. My final email simply asked what sealer I should use to finish the job done myself. Still no response. I ended up having to research the proper sealer and application materials, purchased the items from Home Depot and applied several coats myself. Total invested time between my wife and myself was nearly 5 hours. Jeff completely "ghosted" us and left an unfinished job. Poor quality of workmanship, poor customer service, poor accountability for his work, poor experience altogether. I left this review to help others avoid having the same experience. read more

Jeff came out to do an inspection on my chimney, wrote up an estimate for repairs to the Crown & Stack of the chimney and Cap installation. Estimate was very reasonable (considering we recently sold our old house up in LA and had similar issues with that Fireplace/Chimney). We scheduled the repairs for a week later. Short story...the chimney has been repaired, the fireplace works, and the Mrs. is happy! Bring on the cold and holiday season (one drawback - Santa's not getting down that chimney now). The last time we had a fire in the fireplace the smoke starting backing up into the house a bit. So as the weather turned colder I started searching on Yelp for a chimney sweep. A-1 chimney Service had a ton of great reviews so we decided to try them. The day we chose turned out to have rain in the forecast. When they came by, you could tell they knew what they were doing and they got right to business. They were efficient, neat, clean, nice guys and when they were done they even give us a lead on getting wood at a discount. We'll definitely use them again! read more

Jeff was a nice guy but it was difficult to understand his speech especially on the phone. He repaired cracks in my chimney and reinforced the outside with angle iron and water heater strapping. Unfortunately, the angle iron started rusting the next day. I tried to tell him that the angle iron needed to be primed with a Rustolium type paint, but my suggestion was ignored. I ended up buying replacement aluminum angle and hot dipped galvanized bolts. They did swap out the angle iron for the angle aluminum for me, but only changed out 3 of the 6 bolts. When Jeff and his crew came back, I called them on the issue, and they changed the other three bolts. When tightening the bolts, they twisted off one of the bolts. I had them put in one of the old bolts, and I told them that I would change the last one myself. When I went to change out the bolt, I noticed that the strapping was kind of loose. I will now have to go back up and redo the strapping. They did change out my gas logs for fire glass, and I'm pleased with that part of the job.
