Mike came out to inspect our gas fireplace, which had only been lighting halfway. He took the time to explain how our fireplace works, what we could realistically expect from the unit we have, and what options we might consider if we ever decided to upgrade. What I appreciated most was how honest he was. After looking everything over, he told me the issue was likely just a buildup that needed a thorough cleaning and possibly some new sand. He even mentioned that my husband could probably handle it himself if we wanted to go that route. That level of honesty is rare. In the end, we chose to have Mike take care of it. While he was here, he also installed a damper clamp that we didn't realize was missing, which brought the fireplace up to code. Before calling Fireplace Doctor, we had another company come out. They made the situation sound much more serious and tried to convince us we needed a completely new fireplace unit because they claimed our setup was dangerous. The wife and I moved into our house in 2001 (now is 2025) and after burning wood and then some duraflames, we really stopped using our fireplace probably 10 years ago. It does have a gas line running to it, but we never used it, but always thought about it. Well, in late 2024 I got an itching to use our fireplace to warm the living room in our 60+ year old, no insulation, open beamed ceilinged (is that a word?) home and looking on Yelp I found The Fireplace Doctor. I called for an appointment, but due to the holidays, our schedule was not jibing so we made an appointment for early January 2025. Today, the impressive Fireplace Doctor vehicle pulled in front of our house 15 minutes early and we got a knock on the door a couple minutes before our agreed upon time. I am a punctuality nut and that was a great first impression for me. As my Dad would say, being on time is "late" and being 5 minutes early is "on time". Good start. Mike introduced himself (the actual Fireplace Doctor at my front door!). He quickly put on booties over his shoes, which my wife and I said were not necessary since our carpet was still reeling from the many holiday visitors and our dog. The carpets would be cleaned soon, but that was Mike's way of showing respect for the homes he visits. Another good impression. We explained that we wanted to use the existing gas line to get gas logs to start using our fireplace again. Also, we wanted to know that the firebox was good, what needed to be done to use it and what our options were. Mike inspected the fireplace, firebox and gas line and immediately said that the gas line was bad and that would need to be our starting point. Mike said that this was the first immediate step to find out the cost, see if we wanted to make that investment and then we could move forward with gas or not. Mike did not have a referral for someone to do the gas line work, so we would have to find that ourselves. He then told us that the next step would be a certified chimney sweep (like in Mary Poppins? Chim-Chim Cheree!). For this step he did give us a referral whom we will call after we determine what we are doing with the gas line. Mike was great at explaining what we needed to have done before his expertise kicked in and he wrote it all down for us. He did not try to tell us that he could do any of the initial work or bring in his own subcontractors, he was giving us the honest opinion of how we should proceed. Another great impression. Mike was very nice to deal with and was not, in any way, felt put out for coming to San Clemente to help us figure out what to do. Although we have not had any work done by the Fireplace Doctor, I would already refer him due to his attention to detail and extremely helpful attitude to get us where we wanted to go. I am sitting here in shock to the encounter with this psychotic repairman! Had a 10 am appointment with them and he arrives on time to my condo complex as scheduled. However he parked in a reserved spot. I asked him to please move his van to one of the available visitor spots. He started complaining about how heavy the gear was that he needed to bring in for the service call. He moved his van but instead of parking in the visitor parking he backed into another reserved spot. The visitor spot was no more than thirty feet farther from my unit than the reserved spot that he took! He jumped back out of the van and I told him he could get towed parking there, please just move to the visitor spot. He shouted at me "do you want your fireplace fixed or not?" He then proceeded to jump back into his van and drive away. This the most childish and unprofessional encounter I have ever had with a service person. Schedule this psycho at your own risk. I scheduled a service because my gas fireplace was failing to light. I spoke to Natalia in the office and she scheduled the service. She was very professional and friendly. I am an engineer myself and did everything I could to fix it even ordering a replacement gas module off Amazon. I tried every fix that the YouTubers had to offer. After that, I don't know why I need to spent so much money more than the service fee they said in the first place, so I asked why. But they didn't like I raise concerns and ask them questions at all.
