First time and will be back for pizza and cocktails. The "Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana," an international non-profit organization founded in the mid 1980's by a group of Neapolitan pizzaiolis (pizza makers), gives special designation to pizzerias who meet strict requirements that respect the tradition of the art of Neapolitan pizza making. A16 is one of the 300+ pizzerias that received this designation. In addition to great, authentic pizza, we loved the service, cocktails and wine. From the greeting at the door to the Bambolonis for dessert, we had a lovely experience at A16 on College Ave. in Oakland. The food was excellent, especially the whole trout which we shared along with the terrific snap pea dish. This has been a tough time for restaurant staffing, but the service was very good and it was notable that although very busy, the staff works harmoniously together. my absolute favorite way to treat myself, is a trip to A16, what a great addition to Rockridge. the margherita pizza [add sausage and calabrese pepper oil ] is my FAVORITE!!! BEST PIZZA! the dough is scrumptious... perfectly soft and chewy. also enjoyed the the lamb meatballs, burrata [to die for] & fried potatoes! wine selection is of high choice... one sip makes it worth every penny! was really impressed with the service! especially this last visit. both pizza booth & bar area have attentive, friendly service. was bummed to hear the bar tender Aiden no longer worked at A16, but was pleasantly impressed with Darius. he is entertaining & hands down is the BEST bartender in Oakland! First turn off--I didn't know what a lot of items were on the menu. The descriptions didn't help. Being adventurous, we stepped in to try some new things. I was slightly annoyed at the menu and having to ask the waiter for a diatribe on the menu. I feel he should be there for clarifications and suggestions, not an Italian lesson. Ambiance--trendy, but slightly off. Great Wall art, but the space seemed a little large, cold and loud. Good, pricey cocktails. We had the Hawaiian applejack--a variety of yellowfin. It was a small plate, but fresh, light and delicious. Had a high chair for the little one, but not especially kid friendly. We'll probably stop in again, more likely if it's happy hour than for a meal. read more

I've been twice and both times I have had the Montanara Pizza with prosciutto: lightly fried dough, smoky tomato sauce, burrata, and basil. It's so insanely good that I don't think I will ever get around to trying anything else on the menu! I ate dinner at A16 with two friends last night. The antipasti we ordered was good. Brussels sprouts excellent. Pizzas were chewy though. The fungi pizza, aside from the crust issue, was quite good, but the sausage and rapini was terrible. The rapini was not cooked enough so that it was hard to cut and impossible to chew. The cheese was in 3 hunks and barely melted. I told the waiter it was not cooked properly and she said she would tell the kitchen. They did not adjust the bill. We ordered affagatos for desert, which was off the menu, so they brought us espresso and ice cream in another cup with enormous serving spoons. As the espresso was getting cold and the ice cream melting I went in search of tea spoons which were promised but did not materialize. After walking around to find another waiter, he went and found us normal sized spoons. Aside from having no spoons, they had no bottles available for still water - they all were filled with sparkling water. The restaurant was not particularly busy. I would assume there would be a staff person who paid attention to stocking the silverware and water bottles. It appeared that whomever was responsible for managing the restaurant last night was either asleep at the wheel or had to take the night off. Wife and I went here for date night and were more than impressed. For starters we had the anchovies which had a very nice lemony kick which made the dish have a bright refreshing taste. We also order the fried Peperoncini which reminded me of Padron peppers in Barcelona which both the wife and I couldn't get enough of. For our pasta dish (Primo on the menu) we had the Orecchiette with lamb sausage which had a light pesto/olive oil flavor which was nice to have after the peppers but I slightly ruined it by putting too much chile oil (note to self: go easy on the chile oil). We finished with a Pizza Montero pizza with prosciutto - (smoked marinara, burrata and prosciutto di Parma which was perfectly simple flavors of quality ingredients on top of a slightly burnt crust from a wood fired oven. read more

My boyfriend and I enjoyed a fabulous prix fixe Valentine's dinner last night. It was $85 per person but worth it for an ample and delicious five course meal. FOOD: 4 stars * Burrata: Served with prosciutto and crostini. Tasty. * Oysters: Served on the half shell on a plate of ice. Fresh and delicious. * Clam, Mussel and Squid Soup: Served with bread. Reminded me of lighter version of cioppino. Broth could use a little more seasoning. * Spaghetti with Lobster: Perfectly cooked spaghetti. Nice chunks of lobster. * Sausage Pizzette: I was definitely expecting a smaller pizza. The crust and sauce was wonderful. However, I found it a bit salty for my taste. * Seared Scallops with Fennel: Wow. Wonderful. Giant luscious scallops seared perfectly. * Panna Cotta in Raspberry Sauce: Lovely mix of flavors. * Trio of Cake/Mousse: No idea what this was called other than "I can't believe i ate all of it after eating all that other food." Damn. That was yummy. The mousse was so silky and packed with chocolate. SERVICE: 4.5 stars Almost perfect. Seated promptly for our reservation. Attentive servers. They always asked before clearing plates. I struggled with the wine menu (I'm not familiar with Italian wines) and the server came over to ask if I needed help. She recommended a lovely wine to compliment the scallops. The meal was well timed except for the pasta/pizzette course. It seemed like we waited for a little while before that course was served. AMBIANCE: 4 stars Modern but romantic feel. Surprisingly average noise level given the space. Tables were close but not unreasonably so. I had no trouble hearing my conversation but didn't have to listen to my neighbors. Also, I didn't have to worry about my ass knocking stuff off the next table when I passed by. We had visited this A16 a year ago for dinner and really enjoyed it. Since we were celebrating our office's 10 year anniversary, we thought it would be a great choice for a staff lunch....boy were we wrong!! Chef's Antipasta: Olives were borderline spoiled! Marinated peppers and cut meats were good Melon and tomato salad: Probably a TOTAL of half a small tomato in that salad. Was mostly watermelon and a couple shavings of cheese. Also, way too salty! Pana Pizza: SKIMPY on the toppings! The crust was a good 2 inches wide as the toppings didn't reach beyond the center of the pie. Otherwise, the overall flavor was ok and the crust's texture (chewy) was very good. Baked Pasta: DRY DRY DRY and minimally warm. The mini canoli-like noodles were barely covered in sauce and cheese, with a few squares of cut squash interspersed. Flavor is bland, akin to a dish for a two year old. Meatballs: only dish we enjoyed, hence the two stars. I'm not sure I would give A16 another chance after this horrible lunch experience. Not sure if this is an indication that their forte is DINNER or if this reflects a global decline in the quality of their food. I went home thoroughly unsatisfied. read more

It's more of a 3.5. The food was really good, and I had a great time. The price point was just a tad high. I suppose it's the food culture that we are currently in right now. Food prices have definitely sky rocketed over the year. It's definitely because restaurants are seizing in on the "foodie" culture but I also realize that restaurants are also using better ingredients - I get it We ordered to start: tuna carpaccio, burrata and braised tripe. Tuna Carpaccio: it was good, but not memorable. There was no wow factor, and there wasn't much that distinguished this A16's carpaccio from the others I've had. It was fresh, yes. Burrata: you can never go wrong with burrata. Hello! It's just purchased, and slapped on a dish with tomatoes, oiive oil, salt, pepper and a few crostinis. Nevertheless, it was delicious. We had to ask for more bread where I then proceeded to use the bread as a napkin to slop off every last bit! Braised tripe: as a disclaimer, I'm not much of a tripe eater. It's not necessarily because it's an offal, but it's not something I love. That being said, I've definitely had great tripe that was delicious. My favorite manner is braised with turnip, the type you get at dim sum. Alas, I digressed...A16's braised tripe was SUPER gamey. It's not even an overstatement. I could definitely smell, let alone taste, that it was offal. I could not have it placed in front of me. It was making be queasy. Maybe it wasn't cleaned that well? Maybe it was that fresh? I don't know...but it was definitely not for me. Rabbit pasta - DELICIOUS. Didn't even know I was eating those cute little things. The pasta was great too, had a great bite/gummy texture to it. *Oakland Restaurant Week Review Location: Off College Ave, the sign is very small but not that hard to miss. There's street parking and a little lot near by, or you can park within the neighborhood streets. Customer Service: Our server was great she was very nice, all the food came in a timely manner no problems on this end. Decor: Great ambiance!!! I loved everything about this place from the second you walk in, to the nice bar, the great big oven for pizza making with the guy hand tossing the pizzas, the artwork on the walls, etc. Presentation of Food: Plating was nice, fancy. How did the food taste?: This is where it just went really sour for me. With ORW prix fixe menu we thought that we would get a good amount of food. The salad was great no complaints over here, the squash and everything put into the salad was good. BUT when I had called in to confirm how big the main dishes were I had called in because on their website it stated "Sample" for the pasta. Well the lady on the phone went back to ask and she came back saying it's NOT a sample and that it would be the regular size pasta dishes they normally serve. When our pasta came it was a VERY SMALL portion. My bf got the squid ink pasta and it was a "SAMPLE" no other seafood in the pasta except small bits of crab, nothing like the pictures on yelp or what you would have expected to get. The pasta I got with the lamb, the pasta was TOOOO al dente, just ruined it for me. Just when we thought maybe dessert would save the night, the panna cotta was just eh. We were over the whole meal and felt like we should have just gone to in n out for our date night and stayed in to watch a movie. Overall Experience: Disappointing for sure. Love the atmosphere. Had 9 ppl in my party and a reservation; came in at 8 (reservation time) and was seated around 8:25, the house was packed. The servers were really nice (they gave us free appetizers while we waited, fried olives!!). The food was kind of disappointing, didn't match up to the price that was on the menu. Ordered two pizzas and a calamari for appetizers and the fusilli for the entree; the pizza was delicious so I was expecting the same from the rest of the meal. The calamari was only subpar at best, a bit on the salty side. The fusilli with rabbit sugo had the look and presentation but taste judged otherwise. The dish was on the oily side and all I could taste was the spiciness and the saltiness of the dish. The free fried olive and pizzas we got was pretty much the best stuff on the table tonight. Not returning unless they can show me something epic or someone else invites me for a meal here :( read more

Go-to spot for when we have people visiting. Everything is good, but the montanara pizza is the best. Rabbit meatballs and little gem salad are also fantastic. Often a long wait on Friday or Saturday and sometimes noisy. Such a pretty location and so much more space than the Marina spot!!! The build out is amazing and I love that you can still smell the fresh paint. No significant hiccups for being opening night. Although our voice mail reservation request left on Thursday the 30th was never returned. We walked in around 6:15 and were quoted 1 to 1.5 hours and ended up getting seated just after 8:15. The host was really sweet about it though and while we waited we went to Marica Restaurant for cocktails and appetizers. The menu is a little smaller than the SF location and the one of my favorites, the buratta, had a sauce over the top of it. It was good but not what I was expecting. We shared a carafe of white wine as well as two pizzas. The mushroom pizza was really good and my standard, the Margherita, was great too. Unfortunately my boyfriend loves prosciutto all over the pizza and it makes it too salty for me but it was still cooked perfectly. My only other gripe is you have to cut your pizzas here and I wasn't a fan of that... especially since I had dinner at the SF location on Tuesday and they were cut there. Why not here too? Overall I'm thrilled there is an East Bay location so close to BART. I'm envisioning many stops after work since it's easier for us to get to from the fidi. read more

What do you do when you have been on the road for business all week and get back late on Friday with no Halloween costume for Saturday night??? Treat yourself and a good friend to a nice dinner out of course! Left a bowl of candy on the front porch for the trick or treaters and biked over to A16 in Rockridge. I have been here a couple of times for cocktails, but this was the first time for dinner. The space is very nice, open, chic ambiance, gracious and friendly front of house staff with excellent advice on food and wine. We started with a house specialty cocktail for me and a bottle of Italian wine for my friend. Well, she had a glass - saved the rest for dinner! Our server made excellent recommendations for both - very nice that their staff is so knowledgeable about both the menu and the wine list. We shared the the roasted calamari with deep fried corona beans - very nice flavor combination and delicious. We couldn't help ourselves and also shared the salt cod polpettini - a fritter flavor bomb with the spicy aioli. Our server suggested we split the troccoli pasta with chanterelles prior to the main, and yum yum yum it was perfect. Just the right amount for two prior to sharing the Berkshire pork roast - cooked medium rare which for some people locked into the past adage about overcooking pork until it is dry might be off-putting, but seriously, get with the program this was tender juicy and fabulous! Dessert - a shared glass of tawny port. Yes. FIRST AND FOREMOST: Socially, this place is terrific. Every time I've been in, I ... or we ... have a great time. There are chatty, interesting people at the bar, the servers are attentive and the ladies at the podium quickly become your advocates for finding a table or space at the bar. It's a great scene. THAT SAID: The food in uneven. THE PIZZA: The *pizza* -- which should be a rock-solid standard -- came out soggy. Thin-crust pizza with a little sauce and a little cheese should be super crispy. But it wasn't. Tasted good, but where's the crunchy bite? Points off. TOMATO SALAD: I was there in September, which is Bay Area tomato craziness. An heirloom tomato salad should be a celebration of all that's good and right among tomatoes. But the first time I got it, it was overly acidic and some of the tomatoes were mushy. More mush. More points off. ON THE OTHER HAND: The second time I got it, the dish was terrific. It's a tomato and melon salad with bits of purslane, a hint of herbs and bits of ricotta. Well done, it really was the celebration I was waiting for. Points earned back. BETTER STILL: The burrata, served with more stunningly delicious cherry tomatoes and slathered with spicy olive oil and crunchy sea salt was burrata-rageous. At the same time creamy and firm. Yowza. Points! More points! AND THE PASTA: Was excellent. Firm little capunti, which are like gnocchi with attitude, all tossed with chanterelles, little tomatoes and a subtle smoked cheese. That dish, which I fully expected to be the next day's lunch, was devoured heedlessly. Points! Points! Points! SO WHY JUST THREE STARS: They set the bar high. We didn't have a reservation but the hostess was going to try and get us a table but the wait was going to be an hour. No problem....let's have a drink and a couple appetizers. Our wait ended up being 30 minutes-someone cancelled so we got the table. Kudos to the nice hostess-she delivered! Now to the food-we had: Appetizers-fried olives (tangy, tart very good) and calamari (not fried and excellent) Little Gem salad (nice size side, tasty and just the right amount of anchovies) Capunti pasta with lamb (a little spicy which I like and the pasta itself was perfectly cooked) Gnocchi (also cooked very well with great flavor) Roasted chicken (moist, crispy skin which is a plus and nice flavors) Polenta (creamy like it should be) Roasted cauliflower (excellent flavor with the right amount of sweetness, cooked a dente with pine nuts) Cocktails were good and our waitress suggested a very nice dry reisling. My friends were happy with my choice. It was crowded with alot of people still coming in but not too noisy. We could hear ourselves talking without having to speak loudly. One of the fanciest Italian/pizza restaurants I have ever been to. I think the thing that got me hooked was the wine and cocktail list they have. The cocktails were excellent here just thinking about them makes me want another lol. The food was just as amazing as the drinks. A perfect place for a date or night out with friends. This was the most unique pizza I've had (and I've had lots of pizza - reference my pizza list). I wouldn't say it was my favorite pizza, but it was good, and the dining experience and staff earned them the 4th star. I really enjoyed the heirloom tomato and melon salad as an appetizer while waiting for my Montanara Rockridge pizza. The pizza with the flash fried dough was interesting in that it had the chewy/puffy consistency of a beignet or doughnut, but without the sweetness. And it was only noticeable on the crust edges as the rest of the crust was thin and crispy after going through the wood fired ovens to give it a nice char. I enjoyed the fresh tomato sauce and and basil, and adding a farm fresh egg on top made the pizza experience even better. I like that they serve the pizza with cutting shears (scissors) that you get to chop your own slices. All and all a decent pizza. The beer selection (all bottles) was pretty unique. I enjoyed both the Almanac EPA (SF farm to bottle) and the Mebabrea Amber (Italian). I would go back, but do expect a wait. read more

Ladies' night out :-) A16 is a good place for groups (we were only 5, so not that big) - the servers were fairly patient with us and our slow speed at ordering. I arrived a little late so I'm not sure but I think we had a server-in-training because there were two servers with us most of the time which was a little confusing but I think that's what was happening. Little details like waiting until our appetizers were actually served before asking again if we wanted to order entrees will be learned soon enough. Also the drinks came out pretty slowly but I'm sure that's because of the amount of people in the restaurant (Monday night, too....good for them!). And the woman who I believe was the sommelier was really awesome, helping me choose a nice glass of red after my fruity prosecco starter drink. Food, overall, did not blow me away. As good as should be expected: fried olives and chili almonds. A couple of standouts: I really like the calamari dish.....it was roasted and had some dry roasted lemon slices, and just all-around good flavor. Also really loved the whole roasted baby favas - they had a chili oil but weren't too spicy and cooked just right. The true winner was the hawaiian amberjack appetizer - it had pinenuts and fennel pollen (which looked like the little flower of the fennel). The flavors were amazing...I'm not a fennel fan but this is a little less strong and all the flavors they've got working together here are absolutely right on the money. What didn't work for me: the spring salad was pretty flavorless, and the antipasti was disappointing. It included one deviled egg, lettuce with prosciutto on top, fried cardoon (according to wikipedia, "a thistle-like plant also known as artichoke thistle, and usually considered a weed in Argentina, Australia and California" LOL) and maybe one other thing on the plate that I don't recall. None of it really worked for me. The egg wasn't flavorful, the salad was bland, the cardoon tasted like one might find at a fast food place....etc. I didn't try the pizza but the gals got a couple - it seemed to disappear so I'm guessing they liked it. I do think the pricing is pretty high. The amberjack dish was $13 and was equivalent to about 3-4 pieces of sashimi that you might order (although the presentation was nothing like that....the quantity of fish is what I'm trying to relay). I can get 5 pieces of sashimi at Kirala for $10.25....not apples to apples, but you get the picture. I don't need a bargain when I'm out for a nice dinner, I just felt every selection was enough on the high side that it's going to need to be a consideration when thinking about dining options in Oaktown. read more

Off to a slow start but I suspect they'll be hitting 5 stars very soon. It's hard to argue that the food is anything but stellar. What brought this review down was solely poor service. The experience getting a reservation was underwhelming (multiple un-returned messages on the reservation machine), the drink service was incredibly slow with wine & cocktails coming out too far apart, the food service was also a series of odd timings & delays. There were plenty of times when we had no food and no drink spread across a 3hr+ dinner for 2.. We'll be back in a few weeks to try again - hopefully the service gets sorted out otherwise we'll be sticking with Marzano as our go-to. read more

I came here for Oakland restaurant week one night with a couple of my friends, and we tried the prix fixe menu that they had prepared. This is one of those situations when I have to say that the service was what made our experience here that night truly spectacular in my honest opinion. Food: From the prix fixe menu, the food for me was just alright. Nothing that was served was completely unpleasant, but also nothing superbly amazing or anything. The appetizer came with a selection of different items, including their stuffed fried olives, salad, and an assortment of pickled vegetables. The olives were quite interesting because they were stuff with lamb meat, but I'm not someone who really enjoys olives so this part of the dish was just average for me. The pickled vegetables were also a little too sour for my liking. For the main course, I got the orecchiette pasta, and this dish was also decent. It was good for the first few bites, but got rather repetitive and boring after a while. Again, this is just my personal preference, but I didn't enjoy the dish too much. Perhaps the tastiest part of the meal was dessert. It was originally supposed to come with strudel but they had run out, so they gave our group one of those as well as a caramel buttercake as a substitute, and both were surprisingly very good. Service: My favorite about this place was the excellent service that my friends and I enjoyed throughout the night. I'm always someone who says that quality of service can make or break a dining experience for me, and the service that we got here was absolutely superb! It's rare that I encounter service as good as it was here that night, and I was very very satisfied with staff that works here. My water glass was always refilled promptly without me having to ask, and I drink a lot, so the fact that they were able to keep up with me was very impressive and appreciated on my end. They also managed to check up on us throughout the night without feeling overbearing at all, which is hard to pull off sometimes. At the end of the night, the person serving us also helped me write down the name of the fantastic dessert won't I had with my meal on a business card so that I might be able to find it outside of the restaurant! Although the food was just average, I have to say that I am more than willing to come here to try their other food options on the menu just to experience the wonderful service here again! Atmosphere: The restaurant itself was a very trendy and modern place, and kept tidy and clean but still felt warm and nice to dine in. We also managed to get seats in front of the pizza kitchen, so it was cool watching the chefs prepare food right in front of is while we talked and ate our meals. Definitely a good place for a nice dinner and it was a wonderful spot for us to hang out and catch up over a meal! Overall, based on the wonderful service alone, I would like to come back in the near future. Perhaps next time I can explore other menu items to try out how other options compare to what I tried that night. read more

Great ambiance, nice presentation and decent service. The food just fell slightly short of expectations. Ordered the uni crudo, not sure where the uni was sourced (server said she didn't know) but it was clearly good quality. Missing a little something to tie it together though. Snap peas had a nice flavor with the chili and mint, but were overcooked. Calamari was also nice, but nothing more. Surprisingly, the pizza slightly missed the mark, too. Crust was excessively salty and came out different than ordered. Wouldn't rush back, but may try the SF location to see if it lives up to its name. read more

Underwhelmed. We stopped in on a Sunday evening about 6 PM. It was nearly empty and we sat at the "chefs counter". Staff was super friendly. I think they are still in training mode though - our meal came out painfully slowly. So much so that our server stopped by twice to apologize for the wait. Our appetizer was very good. The main meals were okay. Quite expensive for "just okay". May try it again after they have been open for a while. read more

5 stars for service and fun; 3 stars because the food is all over the map - some was A+ and some was really poor - and at this price point, the food should match the service! Our server, Christina, was amazing - we were only a party of 2, eating light, and she (and the rest of the staff treated us like royalty); along w/ the cool ambiance, Ill be back for that reason alone. Food Pros - apps were amazing, so was the rabbit; 3 oz wine tastings were great; creative cocktails at totally reasonable prices. Food Cons - pizza (their specialty(?)) is, as other reviewers have noted, soggy, small and uninspired - 20 bucks for C-grade pizza? Why doesnt it match up to the other stuff? State bread upon request - a place like this should put out quality bread without asking. read more

Love the pizza here, but this is the second time with crazy delay. I've been seated here for 45 min and it took 35 seated for one glass of wine. Burratta for $20 is just served with crackers and an olive oil drizzle. When I came in I wastotally zen to kill time before a spa appointment next door and it would have been nice to get at least a wine refill in this amount of time. read more

It's eleven at night - we had a light dinner around 6 before a concert - so we drop in at A16! Heard that this place was almost impossible to get into, but late night it was only about half full! The kitchen closes at 11:30 so we were in luck. The service was amazing - very attentive and prompt without being overwhelming. Nice people there!!! Shared a marguerita pizza with prosciutto (extra) - was the perfect late night snack - crust was light and the tomato sauce very fresh, generous portion of prosciutto! Had a nice glass of wine - hubby had beer - not a great beer selection like Marzano had but these are different times and different owners so we will get beer elsewhere - will definitely be back for a meal!!!! read more

The evening started a little rough. A16 was living up to its reputation for being slow and providing bad service. I had made a reservation for 8. We were there right on the dot. When we checked in the hostess was very friendly and said our table would be ready shortly. We were seated 20 min later. During that time, we weren't updated about the wait, offered an apology or asked if we would like a drink. However, once we were seated, the hostess did apologize and brought over an order of their fried olives. Our main server was very friendly and attentive and followed up with us many times. There were a couple other small hiccups, but everyone was very nice and seemed to be working their hardest to put their best foot forward. To the food: we had the fried olives and roasted calamari; the roasted lamb and montanara; and the semifreddo. Everything was very tasty. I also had the Rosemary Williams (very refreshing) and then split a half carafe of wine. All in all, a great night. I do think they're actively working on their service issues, which get highlighted in the reviews. The food and atmosphere were great and the service was friendly. read more

A16 is my favorite place to munch in the morning before clients. I had the traditional Italian pastry this morning. Sfogliatelle 5/5 and the Pumpkin canolli 5/5 were the best I ever had. Very pleased and I can't wait to come back for dinner and breakfast tomorrow am. If you haven't been, it's beautiful inside also. read more

I wish we had come here as our main course instead of a snack. We got the margarita pizza, a chopped salad and another pizza that I can't remember the name. The unnamed pizza was better than the margarita. It had green olives and prosciutto, garlic, and a light dusting of chile powder. I could've ate the whole thing, but it wasn't MY pizza. The chopped salad had a good assortment of vegetables. I felt like I got my dose of healthy food for the day. It was presented beautifully, with watermelon radishes on top. We'll be back.
