Man. I don't eat pizza as much these days for reasons of I am now in my 40s and I got fat. So when I DO order it, I guess I sort of expect it to taste...good? Or just taste, like, at all? If it were still 2020, this pizza would have had me running for a Covid test. Could barely taste anything. None of that sweet/savory tang of the marinara. None of that salty umami melty cheese flavor. No oregano. No garlic. Essentially no PIZZA flavor to this flavorless pizza shaped disc of sadness. Cheese was melted on each slice in like a solid wedge, none of that pull apart goodness. Crust reminded me of middle school cafeteria pizza where you can tell it got hardened and dried out sitting under a warming light for half a day. Oakland Le Chaval was our "go to" but they closed due to the crime in Oakland. Today we had to go to Oakland Kaiser Hospital though and decided to try The Star on Grand. Street parking is $3 an hour. I was immediatly pleased when we walked inside. Pleasant -not too loud music playing. Lots of calming wood furnishings, plants and art. Peaceful. After a few minutes at the "Wait To Be Seated" sign, our unkempt and overworked server (I'll not name them) told us to pick any seat we want. Service was great here. We had greetings from (I'll not name them) on the way in and on our way out. They also took the time to ask us how our food was minutes after we were served. (I'll not name them) visually monitored our table in case we wanted to order something else or if we were ready to pay. They were working the entire FOH alone and obviously were overworked but still performed like a Star. We ordered two delicious Personal Pizzas off the Lunch Specials menu plus a Top Of The Line craft beer and a coke. About the pizza. Love a lot of cheese? Just say "Hook me up with pizza please." Want to try a corn mealy fluffy deep dish crust? The Star On Grand leaves others in the dust. Our meal was well worth the $35. So I am sitting and smiling and I almost have a tear in my eye. This is because I strive to write honest reviews which means you will unfortunately read both positives and negatives. I don't like reporting negatives. I'm thinking this is a five star experience. I went to the star this Week on Wednesday had amazing service. Wonderful ambiance. Servers were friendly, Knowledgeable and consistent. We came on a Wednesday and the specials were 50 percent off of wines, so of course we had to indulge on that! For my second drink, I ordered a margarita and that was delicious. Strong enough and not watered down. We ordered the meatballs as our appetizer and that was juicy and delicious. Would definitely order that again. Option comes in either 3 or 6 count but we went with the bigger one since we were sharing. For our pizzas, we got the bbq chicken and the carbonara. Both large sizes. Perfect size for a party of 4. We left with a slice each to go. I liked the bbq chicken more. More of my flavor profile, but both were good. Just depends on your preference. I would come back to try the other pizzas and drinks! For parking, no parking lot. It's on the street, and I think it's metered. We came for dinner at 7, so didn't have to pay and it was fairly easy to find parking. The meatballs were very flavorful, and came with plenty of delicious sauce, but were too salty for my taste. For to go, both the bread and the caesar didn't do it for me. I have only been to this place twice since they took over the old establishment. However, Tuesday me and three Jamaican brothers came here for lunch meeting and to catch up. One was running late because of a project he was doing in the area. Our server was kind and attended to us while we were waiting. Every request we had, he made us feel welcome. Our server did a great job all around (the reason for five star). I ordered a pesto chicken sandwich with a side of Greek salad. I truly enjoyed my lunch. The sandwich was on point. Food - 4 stars - I'm happy to report that our pizzas were delicious and comparable to those we have enjoyed at the other locations in SF which we have been dining at for years. We also enjoyed the Caesar salad and the garlic bread sticks, first time ordering both. The restaurant is also beautiful and set up well for both bar and dining. Service - 3 stars - For a Friday evening post movie I expected more patrons but with the restaurant less than half full, service was less than relaxed with us having to ask for water well after being seated and having to ask where our drinks were 20 minutes after ordering only to hear they were on their way (we sat directly from where we then saw someone go to the bar to pour the beers). Upshot - We will return for the food, or probably just order take out and wait to eat when we get home like we've done after Cal games with the Solano location (which we enjoy dine in there also btw) read more

My friends and I stumbled upon their birthday celebration this past weekend and had an amazing dinner experience. - California: Tangy from the sun-dried tomatoes and fresh from the arugula topping, I don't feel the slightest bit guilty indulging in this pizza. Even the leftovers were delicious. - Carbonara: Creamy and decadent -- if you like the pasta, you'll probably also love this. And I can't say I see carbonara pizza at many pizza places. This place gets credit off the bat for making three different pizza styles in house with a variety of options for toppings. If you like pizza you know how hard it is to find one good pizza joint with one style. The service is great, the workers were pleasant which added to our experience of coming to dine in. Food came out very quickly and we definitely had our fill. Now let's get to the food: Starter - Goddess Salad (5/5). It was really delicious and had plenty of texture (crunch) that made this a fun salad to share. The regular size is plenty for a party of 2 to share. They nailed down the combination of flavors and peppered it at the table to our taste. They took their time preparing this. Pizza - We did half and half in the bigger size, California & the All Star. Both DETROIT STYLE. (4/5) Full disclosure, I am from NYC so I am biased toward flat crust, my wife did really enjoy the thick doughy texture. They did a very good job on the crust, corner pieces are a great combo of crunchy and soft dough and toppings. I thought the All Star was a little light on the tomato sauce but that may be because of the style of pizza we selected. The toppings on the All Star were well done, for the amount they put on there it wasn't too crowded and most of it stayed on. The California is a fine choice for this Detroit style. Well balanced greens and balsamic reduction on top of the dough and pesto base was very tasty. A little red pepper flakes on this bad boy and you got a solid pizza. For two people we had about 3 pieces of pizza to take home after we were satiated (8 total to start with).
